U N D E R G R A D U A T E C O U R S E S (Winter Semester 2017-2018) Section of Ancient and Medieval History Ancient History (AIS) AIS 403 Kostas Vlassopoulos What is the history of antiquity? (Lecture course) This module constitutes a general introduction to the history of antiquity. It aims to examine how modern historians conceptualise antiquity, the various ways in which they have written its history, and the wealth of sources and questions that they have asked based on them. The module will cover the societies and cultures of the Near East and the Mediterranean between 3000 BC and 600 AD. AIS 606 Katerina Panagopoulou Poleis in the Hellenistic and Roman worlds (Lecture course) 2 This course examines the restructuring and development of the polis institution from Alexander the Great through to the Roman Imperial period, through study of the related sources (literary, archaeological, epigraphic, numismatic). Our observation of the changes occurring in one of the most important institutions in antiquity in the above-mentioned period on an administrative, financial, social and cultural level enhances the students understanding of the transition process from the Classical to the Hellenistic and Roman world. We will particularly focus on the restructuring of polis networks as a result of the rise and fall of Hellenistic kings, of Rome and of the Roman emperors respectively and on the impact that this had upon Mediterranean history. Medieval History (IMCH) IMCH 129 Eleni Sakellariou Introduction to European Medieval History (Lecture course) The aim of this course is to introduce students to the main political, institutional, social, economic and cultural characteristics of the first six centuries of the Middle Ages. The comprehension of this crucial historical period is complemented with vivid and representative examples taken from the historical sources of the time. IMCH 328 Eleni Sakellariou Crises, Transitions, Reversals in the Late Middle Ages (Seminar) 10 ECTS In recent decades, the late Middle Ages is at the heart of a heated historical debate. Was it an era of universal and lasting crisis, or one of crisis in certain sectors, for example the demographic, and of restructuring in others, a process that led to the transition from the medieval world to that of the early modern period? The students will answer this important question through their essays, by examining the multiple aspects of this crucial historical period.
