Στην Ορθόδοξη Χριστιανική παράδοση, Τριώδιο, είναι μια κινητή περίοδος είκοσι ημερών που ξεκινά από την Κυριακή του «Τελώνου και Φαρισαίου» και διαρκεί τρεις εβδομάδες μέχρι δηλαδή την εβδομάδα της «Τυροφάγου» ή «Τυρινής» και αποτελεί ένα στάδιο προετοιμασίας για την νηστεία της Μεγάλης Σαρακοστής. 1

Τελώνου και Φαρισαίου Η Εκκλησία μας, τοποθέτησε το σημερινό Αποστολικό ανάγνωσμα, στην αρχή του Τριωδίου, μιας πνευματικής περιόδου κατά την οποία ο άνθρωπος καλείται ν αγωνιστεί και να προετοιμάσει πνευματικά τον εαυτό του, για τη βίωση του Πάθους και της Αναστάσεως του Κυρίου μας. Προβάλλονται ταυτόχρονα ως ουσιώδη στοιχεία της πνευματικής ζωής, η άσκηση, η κακοπάθεια και παράλληλα η αφοσίωση στην αλήθεια του Χριστού. Ο Απόστολος Παύλος, για να στηρίξει τον Τιμόθεο, αλλά και κάθε άνθρωπο στον πνευματικό αγώνα, ιδιαίτερα κατά την περίοδο αυτή του Τριωδίου, προβάλλει το προσωπικό του παράδειγμα και την εν Χριστώ εμπειρία του.η ζωή του είναι γεμάτη από πίστη, αγάπη, υπομονή, διωγμούς και παθήματα. Πολλές φορές προκαλεί την ψυχή μας το γεγονός ότι οι άνθρωποι του Θεού, αυτοί που αγωνίζονται να ζήσουν με δικαιοσύνη, με καθαρότητα και αγάπη, συναντούν θλίψεις και διωγμούς, κινδύνους και δυσκολίες. Ένα πλήθος από παραδείγματα μέσα από την Αγία Γραφή επιβεβαιώνει την αλήθεια του λόγου του Αποστόλου Παύλου ότι «πάντες οι θέλοντες ευσεβώς ζην εν Χριστώ Ιησού διωχθήσονται». Ο δίκαιος Άβελ φονεύεται από τον φθονερό Κάϊν. Ο Ηλίας διώκεται από την αμαρτωλή Ιεζάβελ. Ο Τίμιος Πρόδρομος αποκεφαλίζεται εξ αιτίας της Ηρωδιάδος. Αλλά στην ζωή της Εκκλησίας μας, στη ζωή των Αγίων, βλέπουμε να εφαρμόζεται ο λόγος του Κυρίου προς τους Μαθητές του: «Παραδώσουσι γαρ υμάς εις συνέδρια και εν ταις συναγωγαίς αυτών μαστιγώσουσιν υμάς». Και συνεχίζει: «Όλοι όσοι θέλουν να ζήσουν ευσεβώς εν Χριστώ Ιησού θα διωχθούν. Ο Τιμόθεος γνωρίζει πολύ καλά τους διωγμούς και τα μαρτύρια που ο διδάσκαλός του αντιμετώπισε στο παρελθόν αλλά και αντιμετωπίζει στο παρόν της επιστολής όντας δέσμιος στη Ρώμη. Ταυτόχρονα όμως γνωρίζει ότι «εκ πάντων ερρύσατο ο Κύριος» τον απόστολό του, επιδαψιλεύοντας σ αυτόν τη θεία χάρη και τη θεία ενίσχυση. Ο ίδιος ο Χριστός το έθεσε ξεκάθαρα: «Μακάριοι όσοι διώκονται για την επικράτηση του θελήματος του Θεού γιατί σ αυτούς ανήκει η βασιλεία του Θεού. Μακάριοι είστε όταν σας χλευάσουν και σας καταδιώξουν και σας κακολογήσουν με κάθε ψεύτικη κατηγορία εξαιτίας μου. Έτσι καταδίωξαν και τους προφήτες πριν από σας» (Ματθ. ε 10-12). Άλλωστε από βρέφος ο Κύριος διωκόταν: «Ιδού άγγελος Κυρίου φαίνεται κατ όναρ τω Ιωσήφ λέγων εγερθείς παράλαβε το παιδίον και φεύγε εις Αίγυπτον, και ίσθι εκεί έως αν είπω σοι μέλλει γαρ Ηρώδης ζητείν το παιδίον του απολέσαι αυτό» (Ματθ. β 13). Και όταν άρχισε το κήρυγμά και επιτελούσε τα θαύματα, άλλοι ήθελαν να Τον ρίξουν από τον γκρεμό, άλλοι Τον ονόμαζαν δαιμονισμένο (Ματθ. θ 34), άλλοι οινοπότη και ψευδοπροφήτη (Λουκ. ζ 34), ώσπου εν τέλει να Τον συνέλαβαν, τον οδήγησαν στο Πάθος και στο Σταυρό. Ο Σταυρός επομένως, είναι το κέντρο, είναι η σφραγίδα το αποσφράγισμα της οποίας ορίζει τη γνησιότητα της πορείας του αγωνιστή. Άνθρωποι «πονηροί και γόητες» σε κάθε εποχή θα προκόψουν στο χειρότερο, έχοντας πέσει σε πλάνη οι ίδιοι και πλανώντας και άλλους ανθρώπους. Θα κερδίζουν αξιώματα, οφίκκια, χρήματα, δόξα «επίπλαστον πρόσκαιρον». Κριτήριο στη ζωή του Χριστιανού είναι η παρουσία ή η απουσία του Χριστού από τη ζωή του. Καθοριστικό ρόλο ίσως και τιμητικό προνόμιο του ανθρώπου είναι να γνωρίζει «από βρέφους» τη θεία διδασκαλία, τον νόμο του Θεού. Ειδικότερα οι χριστιανοί γονείς έχουν ύψιστο χρέος θα λέγαμε, να προσφέρουν στα παιδιά τους νωρίς τη ζωντανή μαρτυρία της πίστεως. Μαζί με την τροφή, την ένδυση, την παιδεία, τα παιχνίδια, κλπ, είναι ανάγκη τα παιδιά να γίνουν κοινωνοί της «κατά Θεόν ανατροφής». Αυτό γίνεται πιο επιτακτικό σήμερα, όπου η κοινωνία μας βιώνει διάφορες καταστάσεις. Ας προσπαθήσουμε λοιπόν να ζήσουμε σύμφωνα με το θέλημα του Θεού. Να μην παρασυρόμαστε από αυτά που βλέπουμε να κάνει ο κόσμος. Να πάρουμε δύναμη από το παράδειγμα του Χριστού, των Αποστόλων και των Αγίων μας οι οποίοι και αυτοί αντιμετώπισαν θλίψεις και διωγμούς στη ζωή τους, στην προσπάθεια τους να ζήσουν σύμφωνα με το θέλημα του Θεού. Να θυμόμαστε πάντα όταν διωκόμαστε επειδή προσπαθούμε να ζήσουμε σύμφωνα με το θέλημα του Θεού, αυτά που μας αναφέρει ο Χριστός στους Μακαρισμούς: «Να αισθάνεστε χαρά και αγαλλίαση, γιατί θ ανταμειφθείτε και με το παραπάνω στους ουρανούς». 4

Originally, the Prothesis was located in the same room as the altar table, being simply a smaller table placed against the eastern wall to the north of the altar table. During the reign of the Emperor Justin II, the Prothesis came to occupy its own separate chamber to the north of the altar, in a separate apse, and joined to the altar by a doorway. Another apse was added on the south side for the Diaconicon. From this time on many large Orthodox churches were built with three apses on the eastern end of the church building. However, most smaller churches continued to be built having only one apse containing the altar, the Prothesis and the Diaconicon. The Chalice with the Diskos and Star: The bread and wine are prepared for the liturgy on the Prothesis. The chalice and a round plate on a stand called the diskos or paten that holds the bread are kept on this table. These vessels are normally decorated with iconographic engravings, Christian symbols, and the sign of the cross. The top of each loaf is impressed with a seal bearing the sign of the cross. One large loaf for the Liturgy of Preparation, with a large round seal on it inscribed not only with the square seal (from which the Lamb will be taken), but also markings indicating where the portions for the Theotokos, the Ranks, the Living and Dead will be removed. Those churches which follow Slavic usage will typically use five small loaves, recalling the five loaves from which Christ fed the multitude (John 6:5-14). Normally all will be stamped with a small square seal, though special seals for the Theotokos are sometimes used. Also on this table is a special liturgical knife, symbolically called the spear, that is used for cutting the eucharistic bread (prosphora) and a liturgical spoon for administering holy communion to the people. There are also special covers for the chalice and diskos and a cruciform piece of metal called the asterisk or star that holds the cover over the eucharistic bread on the diskos. A sponge and cloths for drying the chalice after the liturgy are also kept here. The Prothesis is decorated in a manner similar to that of the altar table. Above the Prothesis may be found various icons, often one of Christ praying in Gethsemane: "Let this cup pass.. Today's Divine Liturgy Gifts donated by Anonymous In good health for all. The First Sunday of the Triodion Period: Sunday of The Publican and Pharisee The Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee is the first Sunday of a three-week period prior to the commencement of Great Lent. It marks the beginning of a time of preparation for the spiritual journey of Lent, a time for Orthodox Christians to draw closer to God through worship, prayer, fasting, and acts of charity. It is also on this day that the Triodion is introduced, a liturgical book that contains the services from this Sunday, the tenth before Pascha (Easter), to Great and Holy Saturday. The name for this Sunday is taken from the parable of our Lord Jesus Christ found in Luke 18:10-14. This is the story of two men, one a Pharisee, a member of a Jewish sect known for its diligent observance of the Law, and the other a Publican, a government official charged with the responsibility of collecting taxes. Both men enter the temple, and the Pharisee stands openly and prays, thanking God that he is not like other men, specifically extortioners, the unjust, adulterers, or even this tax collector (v. 11). He then begins to list his religious accomplishments by stating, I fast twice a week, and I give tithes of all that I possess (v. 12). In direct contrast to the pride of the Pharisee, the Publican goes to a place where he will not be noticed by others and beats his breast saying, God, be merciful to me a sinner! (v. 13). Having told this story, Jesus affirms that it was the Publican who returned home justified and forgiven rather than the Pharisee. He states, Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted (v. 14). The theme of this parable is repentance. Repentance is the door through which we enter Lent, the starting-point of the journey to Pascha. To repent signifies far more than self-pity or futile regret over things done in the past. The Greek term metanoia means change of mind. To repent is to be renewed, to be transformed in our inward viewpoint, to attain a fresh way of looking at our relationship with God and with others. The fault of the Pharisee is that he has no desire to change his outlook; he is complacent, self-satisfied, and so he allows no place for God to act within him. The Gospel depicts him as a man that is pleased only with himself who thinks that he has complied with all of the requirements of religion. But in his pride, he has falsified the meaning of true religion and faith. He has reduced these to external observations, measuring his piety by the amount of money he gives. The Publican, on the other hand, truly longs for a change of mind. He humbles himself, and his humility justifies him before God. He becomes, in the words of the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:3), poor in spirit. He acknowledges that he is a sinner, and he knows that salvation is only found in the mercy of God. Here we find an example of true humility, an essential aspect of repentance. A change of mind and the transformation of our lives can only happen when we humble ourselves before God, acknowledge our willingness to turn from sin, and receive His grace into our lives. Our preparation for Lent thus begins with a prayer for humility, the beginning of true repentance. Through repentance, we can find and return to the true order of things, a restoration of our spiritual vision that will guide us in a very difficult and challenging world. By entering Great Lent in humility and repentance, we can attain deeper communion with God as we receive His forgiveness and He blesses by guiding us to greater spiritual heights. The icon of the Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee shows both men in the manner in which they enter the temple to pray. The Pharisee goes to a very prominent place where others will see him. The positions of his hands indicate that he is addressing God by speaking of his stature and accomplishments. In contrast, the Publican enters and remains in a low place, far from the holiest parts of the temple. His posture shows his openness to God, his humility, and his petition for mercy. 8

Our Sunday coffee hours not only give us a chance to visit with friends, but also to exercise our philoxenia or hospitality, towards our guest and newcomers to the parish, who have just participated in the Divine Liturgy with us. Consider hosting a coffee hour to commemorate an anniversary, memorial, birthday, name day etc. Philoptochos will continue to prepare coffee, guide host and supply paper products. Suggestions for refreshments are fruit, veggies, cookies, pastries, croissants and bagels. Fruit juices are great for children and non-coffee drinkers. Fasting Day suggestions are nuts, hummus, veggies, halva, jello, dried or fresh fruit, chips and salsa and salads. It is recommended to have at least 4 people to help set up, serve and cleanup.
