4 ΑΠΟΣΤΟΛΟΣ: Κυριακή του Παραλύτου, Αποστ. Ανάγνωσμα: Πράξεις 9: 32 Περνώντας ο Πέτρος απ όλες αυτές τις εκκλησίες, κατέβηκε και στους χριστιανούς που κατοικούσαν στην Λύδδα. Εκεί βρήκε κάποιον άνθρωπο που λεγόταν Αινέας. Αυτός ήταν οκτώ χρόνια κατάκοιτος, επειδή ήταν παράλυτος. Ο Πέτρος του είπε: «Αινέα, σε γιατρεύει ο Ιησούς Χριστός. Σήκω και στρώσε το κρεββάτι σου». Και αυτός αμέσως σηκώθηκε. Όλοι όσοι κατοικούσαν στην Λύδδα και στον Σάρωνα τον είδαν και δέχτηκαν τον Ιησού για Κύριό τους. Στην Ιόππη ήταν μια μαθήτρια που την έλεγαν Ταβιθά στα ελληνικά σημαίνει «Δορκάδα». Αυτή είχε κάνει πολλές αγαθοεργίες και ελεημοσύνες. Εκείνες τις μέρες συνέβη να αρρωστήσει και να πεθάνει. Την έλουσαν, λοιπόν, και την έβαλαν στο ανώγειο. Η Λύδδα ήταν κοντά στην Ιόππη και όταν οι μαθητές άκουσαν ότι ο Πέτρος ήταν εκεί, του έστειλαν δύο άνδρες και τον παρακαλούσαν να πάει σ αυτούς όσο γίνεται πιο γρήγορα. Αυτός ξεκίνησε και πήγε μαζί τους. Μόλις έφτασε, τον ανέβασαν στο ανώγειο. Αμέσως τον περικύκλωσαν όλες οι χήρες κλαίγοντας και δείχνοντάς του τα ρούχα που είχε φτιάξει γι αυτούς η Δορκάδα όσο ζούσε. Ο Πέτρος τότε τους έβγαλε όλους έξω, γονάτισε και προσευχήθηκε. Κατόπιν γύρισε στη νεκρή και της είπε: «Ταβιθά, σήκω πάνω». Αυτή άνοιξε τα μάτια της, κι όταν είδε τον Πέτρο ανασηκώθηκε. Ο Πέτρος της έδωσε το χέρι του και τη σήκωσε. Ύστερα φώναξε τους πιστούς και τις χήρες και τους την παρουσίασε ζωντανή. Αυτό έγινε γνωστό σ όλη την Ιόππη, και πολλοί πίστεψαν στον Κύριο. EPISTLE: The reading is from Acts of the Apostles 9:32-42 IN THOSE DAYS, as Peter went here and there among them all, he came down also to the saints that lived at Lydda. There he found a man named Aeneas, who had been bedridden for eight years and was paralyzed. And Peter said to him, "Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you; rise and make your bed." And immediately he rose. And all the residents of Lydda and Sharon saw him, and they turned to the Lord. Now there was at Joppa a disciple named Tabitha, which means Dorcas. She was full of good works and acts of charity. In those days she fell sick and died; and when they had washed her, they laid her in an upper room. Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, hearing that Peter was there, sent two men to him entreating him, "Please come to us without delay." So Peter rose and went with them. And when he had come, they took him to the upper room. All the widows stood beside him weeping, and showing tunics and other garments which Dorcas made while she was with them. But Peter put them all outside and knelt down and prayed; then turning to the body he said, "Tabitha, rise." And she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter she sat up. And he gave her his hand and lifted her up. Then calling the saints and widows he presented her alive. And it became known throughout all Joppa, and many believed in the Lord. Κοντά στην προβατική πύλη, στα Ιεροσόλυμα, υπάρχει μια δεξαμενή με πέντε στοές, που εβραϊκά ονομάζεται Βηθεσδά. Σ αυτές τις στοές κείτονταν πολλοί άρρωστοι, τυφλοί, κουτσοί, παράλυτοι, που περίμεναν να αναταραχθεί το νερό γιατί, από καιρό σε καιρό, ένας άγγελος Κυρίου κατέβαινε στη δεξαμενή κι 4

5 ανατάραζε τα νερά όποιος, λοιπόν, έμπαινε πρώτος μετά την αναταραχή του νερού, αυτός γινόταν καλά, όποια κι αν ήταν η αρρώστια που τον ταλαιπωρούσε. Εκεί ήταν κι ένας άνθρωπος, άρρωστος τριάντα οχτώ ολόκληρα χρόνια. Όταν τον είδε ο Ιησούς κατάκοιτο γνωρίζοντας πως ήταν έτσι για πολύ καιρό, τον ρώτησε: «Θέλεις να γίνεις καλά;» «Κύριε»,του αποκρίθηκε ο άρρωστος, «δεν έχω κανέναν να με βάλει στη δεξαμενή μόλις αναταραχτούν τα νερά έτσι, ενώ εγώ προσπαθώ να πλησιάσω μόνος μου, πάντοτε κάποιος άλλος κατεβαίνει στο νερό πριν από μένα». Ο Ιησούς του λέει:«σήκω πάνω, πάρε το κρεβάτι σου και περπάτα». Κι αμέσως ο άνθρωπος έγινε καλά, σήκωσε το κρεβάτι του και περπατούσε. Η μέρα που έγινε αυτό ήταν Σάββατο. Έλεγαν, λοιπόν, οι Ιουδαίοι άρχοντες στο θεραπευμένο: «Είναι Σάββατο, και δεν επιτρέπεται να σηκώσεις το κρεβάτι σου». Αυτός όμως τους απάντησε: «Εκείνος που μ έκανε καλά, εκείνος μου είπε πάρε το κρεβάτι σου και περπάτα». Τον ρώτησαν: «Ποιος είναι ο άνθρωπος που σου είπε πάρε το κρεβάτι σου και περπάτα ;» Ο θεραπευμένος όμως δεν ήξερε να πει ποιος ήταν, επειδή ο Ιησούς είχε φύγει απαρατήρητος εξαιτίας του πλήθους που ήταν μαζεμένο εκεί. Αργότερα ο Ιησούς τον βρήκε στο ναό και του είπε: «Βλέπεις, έχεις γίνει καλά από δω και πέρα μην αμαρτάνεις, για να μην πάθεις τίποτα χειρότερο». Ο άνθρωπος έφυγε αμέσως κι ανάγγειλε στους Ιουδαίους άρχοντες ότι ο Ιησούς ήταν αυτός που τον γιάτρεψε. GOSPEL: Sunday of the Paralytic - The Gospel According to John 5:1-15 At that time, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Hebrew called Bethesda which has five porticoes. In these lay a multitude of invalids, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water; for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool, and troubled the water; whoever stepped in first after the troubling of the water was healed of whatever disease he had. One man was there, who had been ill for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him and knew that he had been lying there a long time, he said to him, "Do you want to be healed?" The sick man answered him, "Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is troubled, and while I am going another steps down before me." Jesus said to him, "Rise, take up your pallet, and walk." And at once the man was healed, and he took up his pallet and walked. Now that day was the sabbath. So the Jews said to the man who was cured, "It is the sabbath, it is not lawful for you to carry your pallet." But he answered them, "The man who healed me said to me, 'Take up your pallet, and walk.' "They asked him, "Who is the man who said to you, 'Take up your pallet, and walk'?" Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place. Afterward, Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, "See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse befall you." The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. 8 Η θεραπεία του Αινέα και η ανάσταση της Ταβιθά Το ευαγγελικό ανάγνωσμα της ημέρας μας περιγράφει το θαύμα της θεραπείας του παραλύτου της Βηθεσθά, ο οποίος βρισκόταν καθηλωμένος στο κρεβάτι του πόνου για τριάντα οχτώ χρόνια. Το αποστολικό ανάγνωσμα της ημέρας είναι παρμένο από τις Πράξεις των Αποστόλων και μας περιγράφει δυο θαύματα, τα οποία τέλεσε ο Απόστολος Πέτρος. Το πρώτο θαύμα είναι η θεραπεία του Αινέα, ο οποίος ήταν για οχτώ χρόνια παράλυτος. Το δεύτερο είναι η ανάσταση της Ταβιθά. Τα θαύματα του Ιησού Χριστού ήταν τα «σημεία» της Βασιλείας του Θεού. Αυτή την εξουσία της επιτέλεσης θαυμάτων ο ίδιος ο Ιησούς Χριστός την μετέδωσε στους μαθητές του, τους Αγίους Αποστόλους: «πορευόμενοι δε κηρύσσετε λέγοντες ότι ήγγικεν η βασιλεία των ουρανών. Ασθενούντας θεραπεύετε, λεπρούς καθαρίζετε, νεκρούς εγείρετε, δαιμόνια εκβάλλετε, δωρεάν ελάβετε, δωρεάν δότε» (Ματθ.10,6-8). Τα θαύματα των Αγίων Αποστόλων αποτελούν τη συνέχεια των θαυμάτων του Ιησού Χριστού και λαμβάνουν εσχατολογική προοπτική. Η εξάπλωση του κηρύγματος και εκτός της πόλης των Ιεροσολύμων είχε ως αποτέλεσμα την ίδρυση πολλών χριστιανικών κοινοτήτων. Τις κοινότητες αυτές κατά την πληροφορία του Ευαγγελιστή Λουκά, επισκέπτεται ο Απόστολος Πέτρος και από την περιοδεία του αυτή μας διασώζει ο Ευαγγελιστής Λουκάς τα δυο αυτά θαύματα της σημερινής αποστολικής περικοπής, τη θεραπεία του Αινέα και την ανάσταση της Ταβιθά. Μετά τη θεραπεία του Αινέα «είδον αυτόν πάντες οι κατοικούντες Λύδδαν και τον Σάρωνα, οίτινες επέστρεψαν επί τον Κύριον», ενώ μετά την ανάσταση της Ταβιθά «γνωστόν εγένετο καθ όλης της Ιόππης, και πολλοί επίστευσαν επί τον Κύριον. Κατά τον τρόπο αυτό από τη μια η διδασκαλία του Ευαγγελίου και από την άλλη τα θαύματα καθίστανται «σημεία» της παρουσίας του Θεού και της Βασιλείας Του. Στην επιτέλεση των δυο αυτών θαυμάτων ο Απόστολος Πέτρος επικαλείται τη δύναμη και ενίσχυση του Θεού. Στην πρώτη περίπτωση του Αινέα επικαλείται αμέσως το όνομα του Ιησού Χριστού: «Αινέα ίαταί σε ο Ιησούς ο Χριστός» για να προχωρήσει στη συνέχεια και να του δώσει την εντολή να σηκωθεί από το κρεβάτι του πόνου. Στη δεύτερη περίπτωση της ανάστασης της Ταβιθά, αν και δεν μας δίνετε άμεσα η πληροφορία για την επίκληση του ονόματος του Ιησού Χριστού, εμμέσως αφήνεται να μας εννοηθεί. Πριν την επιτέλεση του θαύματος ο Απόστολος Πέτρος προσεύχεται και μάλιστα γονατίζει, πράξη την οποία συνήθιζε ο ίδιος ο Διδάσκαλός του όταν προσευχόταν στον Θεό Πατέρα: «ο Πέτρος θεις τα γόνατα προσηύξατο, και επιστρέψας προς το σώμα είπε Ταβιθά, ανάστηθι». Επομένως τόσο ο Απόστολος Πέτρος αλλά και οι άλλοι Απόστολοι δεν ενεργούν τα «σημεία» αυτεξουσίως, αλλά με τη δύναμη του Κυρίου. Οι λόγοι και τα θαύματα που ενεργούν οι Απόστολοι αποκαλύπτουν στους ανθρώπους τη δύναμη του Αναστάντος Διδασκάλου τους. Ο ίδιος ο Ιησούς Χριστός ενεργεί τα θαύματα μέσω των Αποστόλων. Η ερμηνεία και το νόημα των θαυμάτων μέσα στην Εκκλησία πολλές φορές τείνει να εκτροχιαστεί από την εκκλησιολογική της διάσταση και να λάβει κοσμικό φρόνημα. Κρούσματα αναζήτησης ανύπαρκτων «θαυμάτων» και υποτιθέμενων «χαρισματούχων» και «θαυματοποιών» ανθρώπων δεν μπορούν σε καμία περίπτωση να θεωρηθούν υγιείς πνευματικές καταστάσεις μέσα στην Εκκλησία. Τα θαύματα παραμένουν εντός της Εκκλησίας, ανεξάρτητα από ποιά χρονική περίοδο διανύουμε, οι «δείκτες» τα «σημεία» της παρουσίας του Θεού και της Βασιλείας Του. Καθ όλη τη διάρκεια της ιστορικής της πορείας η Εκκλησία διατήρησε αυτή την προοπτική, καθώς μέσα στην πορεία αυτή έχουν επιτελεστεί αναρίθμητα θαύματα από τους αγίους της Εκκλησίας, είτε ενόσω βρίσκονταν εν ζωή, είτε μετά την κοίμησή τους. Ποτέ όμως οι άγιοι, οι πραγματικοί άνθρωποι του Θεού, δεν επιτελούσαν θαύματα για να αποδείξουν τη δύναμή τους, ή το χάρισμά τους και να γίνουν δημοφιλείς, ή ακόμα χειρότερα να δημιουργήσουν ομάδες και οπαδούς. Σκοπός τους ήταν και είναι να οδηγήσουν τους ανθρώπους στον Ιησού Χριστό, στο όνομα του οποίου επιτελούνται τα θαύματα. Άλλωστε «θαύματα» και «τέρατα» μπορεί κανείς να επιτελεί και με τη συνεργία του διαβόλου. Το πραγματικό θαύμα γίνεται στο όνομα του Κυρίου και αποσκοπεί στη σωτηρία με την εσχατολογική της διάσταση. Κάθε θαύμα που γίνεται είναι εκδήλωση της δύναμης του αναστάντος Κυρίου, είναι εκδήλωση και «σημείο» της Βασιλείας του Θεού επί της γης. Κοινοποίηση άρθρου 8

Our Sunday coffee hours not only give us a chance to visit with friends, but also to exercise our philoxenia or hospitality, towards our guest and newcomers to the parish, who have just participated in the Divine Liturgy with us. Typically, our coffee hours are hosted by Philoptochos and various ministries. But families or groups of friends may consider hosting one as well. Consider hosting a coffee hour to commemorate an anniversary, memorial, birthday, name day etc. Philoptochos will continue to prepare coffee, guide host and supply paper products. Suggestions for refreshments are fruit, veggies, cookies, pastries, croissants and bagels. Fruit juices are great for children and non-coffee drinkers. Fasting Day suggestions are nuts, hummus, veggies, halva, dried or fresh fruit, chips and salsa and salads. It is recommended to have at least 4 people to help set up, serve and cleanup. If anyone would like to just sponsor items Philoptochos will serve. Please consider hosting. It is a small investment to bring a great deal of joy to our Church Family! From Father Gregory, St. George Parish Council and the St. George family There are some people in whom it is immediately obvious that they are a person of tremendous faith. Olga Marudas is one of those people. With her radiant smile her determination and her love for Saint George, she touches the hearts of all who have met her throughout the 30 years at Saint George. Olga has served in our church in many philanthropic and religious endeavors out of a philosophy instilled in her by her Father a Greek Orthodox Priest. Olga has been a member, and held board positions on the Parish Council and Philoptochos. She has sewn altar clothes, acolytes robes, priest vestments or mending whatever was needed. Olga has baked prosforo, pastries, loukoumades, worked church dinners, festivals, crafts for bazaars. She has been a part of every aspect of our church. Saint George community has appreciated her kindness, creativity, energy, lovely temperament and devotion. She is truly a remarkable woman. She has been an inspiration to educate and keep traditions of our Orthodox faith and church. Congratulations Olga on your 90 th Birthday! May your days be filled with the warmth of God s Love and the sweet companionship of friends and family. 11

12 Χριστός Ανέστη! Christ is risen! As we approach Mothers Day this year on Sunday, May 14, I can t help but think back to the Mothers Days in Thessaloniki. There, we celebrated mothers on the great feast of Ypapanti, the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple, on February 2. That is the day when God s Mother, the Panagia, brought the Christ child, 40 days after His birth, into the Temple in Jerusalem, in accordance with God s Law. What better mother is there than the Panagia, the mother of us all? What better care can a mother offer her child than to obey God s Law and raise that child up to respect and love Him? This year, on the American Mothers Day, let us do the same by coming with our family to the Divine Liturgy on May 14, where we can worship and thank God for His many blessings, and ask Him to continue to keep our families healthy and whole by His grace. Mothers, please be sure to send your small children forward at the homily that day so that I can engage them in a children s sermon. And children, please be sure to send your mothers forward at the end so that we can hand them a beautiful fresh carnation and thank them for all their hard work, love, and sacrifice to both their families and the church.
