CATECHISM 101 The Book of Genesis is once again the theme of our Bible Study this year, a book which is most disputed by secular thought, but also a book that forms the foundation for our faith and way of life. Last year we only covered just over two chapters, taking us up to the moment of the Fall of Adam and Eve. Yet, in just those two chapters we saw a great deal of truth without which our view of God and of the world would be very different. It is in these chapters that we see a God Who creates and sustains all living things. We see man created in the image and likeness of God destined for eternal communion with each other and with the Divine. We see that sickness and death are unnatural, the result of disobedience and rebellion against the Giver of Life. Finally, we see that our God is the God of all people, meaning that while in most of the Old Testament we see God as the God of Abraham, the God of Israel, in the beginning God is the God of all human beings, just as He revealed Himself again on the day of Pentecost. I would like to take the opportunity in our Catechism 101 articles to summarize the discussions we are having in our Bible Study so to perhaps inform and better yet to entice all our faithful to partake of the wealth of our Orthodox scriptural tradition. We begin this year with Genesis 3:6-8, So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree beautiful to contemplate, she took its fruit and ate. She also gave it to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of the two were opened, and they knew they were naked. So they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings. Then they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. On the surface, the first sin of Adam and Eve was that they ate of the fruit that God commanded them not to eat. However, the fruit itself was not evil. When they ate it, they did so believing that God lied to them, that God was trying to suppress their freedom by limiting what they could or could not eat. How then were they deceived? The devil, through the serpent, tricked them in the same way Lucifer had deceived himself. He appealed to the deep desire of man to be free. After all, the desire for freedom is in our DNA, is in our wiring. That is what it means to be made in the image and likeness of God. However, while God is truly free, He limits His own freedom because of love. Nowhere is this better manifested than in the icon of Christ the Bridegroom, where He stands in the purple cloak of mockery and with His hands bound awaiting for the nails of the cross. Likewise, Adam and Eve should have recognized the love of the Creator by the tremendous beauty, grace, and power that He bestowed upon them. They should have also recognized that not partaking of the 2 The Voice
forbidden fruit was the way in which they would voluntarily limit their freedom in order to respond to God s love. It is the same way with the practice of fasting today. Meat and dairy products do not all of a sudden become evil on Wednesdays and Fridays. The designation of these foods as forbidden on certain days is arbitrary, but still based on the life of the Church as it is revealed or accepted by God. When we fast, we do not stack up brownie points with God, nor do we fast to atone for our sins, since Christ already has redeemed us. Our fasting from certain foods is simply a way to respond to God s love with a restriction to our own freedom. When, therefore, Adam and Eve partook of the forbidden fruit, they entered into the adventure of trying to figure out the true meaning of freedom in relationship to love. Having eaten, the grace of God left them, because while they exercised their free will, they failed to respond to the love of God. They turned their face away from God and consequently, God turned Himself away from them. They realized this when they saw their nakedness both outwardly and inwardly. Outwardly, Adam and Eve were clothed with light, just as the disciples saw Christ on Mount Tabor. This light was the glory of God lovingly encompassing their entire being, both body and soul. It is this light that is represented by the white outfit of a newly baptized child when we chant: All those who are baptized in Christ, are clothed in Christ. This outward light left them and their bodily nakedness was exposed. In shame they covered themselves up in the most uncomfortable way possible, with fig leaves. Then they hid, because inwardly, they felt their guilt and fear of punishment, for their conscience was tied to the will of God. This is also part of what it means to be created in the image and likeness of God. We all have a conscience, albeit corrupted or weakened since the time of Adam and Eve, but a conscience nevertheless that is wired to speak the voice of God inside of us. When that inward conscience is violated it rebels and manifests itself in guilt and fear. What we do with that guilt and fear is something we will talk about in the sessions to come and in next month s Catechism 101. So far, we see Adam and Eve hiding from God, from each other, and even themselves. This hiding is in vain, for neither our conscience nor God is constrained by visual objects or the limitations of time and space. They heard the Lord coming and they should have come out and confessed, taken responsibility for their actions, exercise their freedom to express their repentance. We are all well aware that this is not what they did. Rather, Adam and Eve, and all of us, their descendants, began a tumultuous adventure that we will explore more deeply in the weeks to come. Hope to see you all in our Bible Study groups, Monday night at 7p.m. for Greek, and Wednesdays, 10:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. for English. In His Service, Fr. Cyprian & Justina October 2nd (Their icon will be placed in our church next August) St. Cyprian was a well-known and admired Carthaginian pagan sorcerer who plied his trade in Antioch. Once a pagan youth Aglaias became enraptured by the beauty of the Christian maiden Justina, and made impure advances towards her, which she soundly rejected. The youth then turned to the sorcerer Cyprian, who was known to be able to win over to impurity other maidens to the service of demonic lust, which burned now in the heart of Aglaias. St. Cyprian called up many demons to defile the heart and mind of this pure maiden, St. Justina, but she just made the Sign of the Cross at the demons and their suggestions and they all disappeared. Perplexed by this simple maiden s power over the demons St. Cyprian had called up, he learned at last that the humble Lord Jesus Christ and His Sign of the Cross was more powerful and effective than all magic, and so St. Cyprian renounced all of his magical learning and livelihood and converted to the Christian Faith. In time, St. Cyprian was made a bishop for his learning and great faith. SS Cyprian and Justina gave their lives to Christ as martyrs, beheaded in Nicomedia in the late 3rd century. 8 The Voice
