SAINT- CATECHISM 101 In our Bible Study we have been following the story of Jacob as he returns to his homeland of Canaan. A constant companion in his journey is the worry that his brother Esau would take his revenge upon him for having tricked him out of his birthright. Jacob prays to God for protection but he also takes upon himself to gain his brother s favor. He sends servants ahead of him with gifts thinking thusly: I may appease him with the present that goes ahead of me, and afterwards I shall see his face; perhaps he will accept me. (Genesis 32:20) Jacob instructs his servants to address Esau as his Lord while referring to Jacob as his servant. The gifts that Jacob sends ahead of him are extremely generous and planned with great detail. He divides them into three successive groups so that he would slowly soften Esau s heart which he assumed would have remained hardened by hate and feelings of revenge against him. He approaches his brother with humility, he holds nothing back in expressing his repentance, and yet he never takes for granted that Esau would accept him. The journey of Jacob to Canaan is one that bears many similarities to our Godparents Sunday Sunday, November 8th, 2015

Because Jacob betrayed his brother he went into exile. There he essentially became a slave until God miraculously endowed him with great wealth and an exhortation to come home. Jacob begins his journey to Canaan even though he did not know if forgiveness would be granted to him upon his return. Jacob proceeds to shower his brother with generous gifts in order to gain his forgiveness even though he knows that no offering can guarantee his change of heart. Our human race and all of us individually have betrayed our Creator by choosing our will over His. We have also betrayed our fellow man by not loving him in the manner that God loved us. Adam and Eve sought to become divine through disobedience and betrayed both God and each other in the process. The effect of their choice is evident to this day and our own way of life. Yet, as God called Jacob back to his homeland, God calls us to go home with Him, in His Kingdom. Before we see God s face, however, we must acknowledge our sin, seek His forgiveness and the forgiveness of those whom we have wronged, and send forth offerings to appease God s heart hoping that He accepts us. Our offerings are the gifts God has given us in this life of exile. Your own gifts, from Your own gifts, we offer unto You are words recited in the holiest moment of the Divine Liturgy. We offer Him our prayers, our virtues, our patience, and our struggles. We offer Him our very lives if necessary, hoping to appease His heart. To our fellow man we offer our humility and unconditional forgiveness in accordance to the Lord s Prayer which states: Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. All the while, our attitude toward God and neighbor is one of no expectations, just the hope that perhaps He will accept us. There is no guarantees and no quid pro quo exchange of offerings and forgiveness. No matter what we end up sacrificing in our Christian struggle it will never be enough to secure a guarantee of God s forgiveness just as it doesn t guarantee the forgiveness of our neighbor. Likewise, Jacob knew that only God could soften Esau s heart just as He had prevented Laban from doing him harm earlier in the story. At the end of all things, we may offer up to God all our efforts, even our lives, but it is the mercy of God that grants us a safe passage to our Promise Land. It is also the mercy of God which will heal the rift between us and our brethren. Therefore, even though we are called to labor in the Lord s vineyard and to value our return to our homeland more than anything in this world, it is God who calls us home, who sustains us, and who makes our return possible. All we can do is to show our repentance and our gratitude with no limits, no conditions, and no expectations. Jacob s gifts and repentant attitude toward Esau and the fact that God had softened Esau s heart ends with the following scene: Esau ran to meet Jacob, and embraced him, and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept. (Genesis 33:4) Let us hope and pray that when we see the face of God, that according to His mercy and according to His promise, we will all embrace and weep for joy with one another, and join in praise of the presence of God in our eternal home: the Kingdom of Heaven. Amen. Fr. Tilemahos

STEWARDSHIP 2015 Christian stewardship is proportional-giving, whether it be a tithe (10%) or a percentage thereof. It is not minimal-giving! ( How much do I have to give? is not Christian ) The fund-raiser mentality is a losing proposition: If we cannot support our own efforts as Orthodox Christian stewards, what does that say about our commitments to Christ? How can we rely on outsiders, non-adherents of Orthodoxy, to support the ministry of our Church? That is not spiritually healthy. Stewardship is about priorities and commitments, not amounts. Ask yourself this question: Can I commit, as part of my ongoing commitment to serving our Lord Jesus Christ, a greater portion of what God has already given me, (time, talents and treasures) and give it back to Him? If there is work in the parish to be done, will I donate my time and talents to help out? And what of my treasures (financial resources), do I give from what is left over, or first off to Him? We thank the 346 stewards who have renewed their pledge for 2015. The 2015 Stewardship cards are available in the narthex, the community hall, the church office, and on www.saint-spyridon.org. Please consider making your 2015 Stewardship pledge today, or give a stewardship card to a friend or family member. During the event, we honored all the Athletic Directors from the past thirty years: John Angelos, Dean Eliacostas, John Farsatis, Tim Georgiopoulos, Dean Karampelas, Chris Kolyvas, Gus Kolyvas, Ted Pappas, Ted Proutsos and Andrew Stameson. All of the honorees have served as Athletic Directors. and we thanked them for their many years of continued service. The entire celebration was beautiful and memorable with a lot of young and young at heart enjoying the fellowship. The superb dinner was generously catered once again by Mr. Dean Eliacostas. Many thanks to the Dinner Dance chairman, Mr. James Korbakes, who along with his committee did a wonderful job in making a dinner dance a success. Many thanks also to all the Benefactors, Sponsors and Patrons of this year s Dinner Dance, all who supported our P.T.A. Raffle and all the donors and volunteers who helped make this celebration possible. Pictures on pages 10-11 FOOD PANTRY We wish to thank all our parishioners and friends of St. Spyridon for remembering our Food Pantry. As you know, our Food Pantry helps our St. Spyridon families that have a need for assistance. It is very important that we keep our Food Pantry filled at all times, so that we do not turn anyone away because of lack of food. If you wish to donate food or monetary donation for our Food Pantry and Thanksgiving Baskets, please bring your items/donation to the Church office. St. Spyridon Hellenic Orthodox Church 9
