Today s Appointed Pericope Great is our Lord, and great is his power. Verse: Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good. The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 8:8-13; 9:1-2 Brethren, food will not commend us to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. Only take care lest this liberty of yours somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. For if any one sees you, a man of knowledge, at table in an idol's temple, might he not be encouraged, if his conscience is weak, to eat food offered to idols? And so by your knowledge this weak man is destroyed, the brother for whom Christ died. Thus, sinning against your brethren and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food is a cause of my brother's falling, I will never eat meat, lest I cause my brother to fall. Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are not you my workmanship in the Lord? If to others I am not an apostle, at least I am to you; for you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. The Gospel According to Matthew 25:31-46 The Lord said, "When the Son of man comes in his glory and all the holy angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, and he will place the sheep at his right hand, but the goats at the left. Then the king will say to those at his right hand, 'Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?' And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.' Kontakion O God, when You come upon the earth in glory, the whole world will tremble. A river of fire will bring all before Your Judgment Seat and the books will be opened, and everything in secret will become public. REFLECTIONS ON TODAY'S GOSPEL READING By: Alyce Mckenzie... " The kingdom of heaven shows up where we least expect it. The presence of Jesus is hidden in the sick, the hungry, the thirsty, the naked, and the imprisoned. They are not only the "brothers" of Jesus; Jesus identifies himself with them. As in the Good Samaritan, the one who both saw and acted with compassion was the neighbor to the man in the ditch, so here it is the group that both saw and met the needs of the suffering that is blessed. This is an echo of the Beatitudes in Matthew 5: those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, who are merciful, and who are pure in heart both are and will be blessed. Paradoxically, blessedness comes from active compassion toward those that society and, in some cases, religion, have judged as accursed. The parable points out that we as individuals, as churches, and as a society, are often not very good at judging others. We are too harsh or we are too lax. We judge by appearances, or we make assumptions about the depths of others' feelings and experiences that are not ours to make. We exclude and we make allowances on other grounds than those set forth in this parable. When we set ourselves up as judge and jury over others, we promote ourselves above our human competence. We need a better, wiser judge than ourselves. Who is that judge, according to Matthew's gospel? It is the son of God Jesus Christ who has authority to forgive sins and who will come to judge the earth and usher us in God's Kingdom. This parable combines the paradoxical qualities of the Son of Man. He is the majestic, exalted Judge and King whose identity is hidden in the poor. We will be judged by the extent to which we see, have compassion, and act in response to his sufferings in the world. The parable calls us to evaluate our own actions, rather than deflect our energies to judging others, deciding whether they are sheep or goats."
Η Εκκλησία μας διδάσκει πως ό,τι ονομάζουμε κόλαση και παράδεισος δεν υφίσταται από πλευράς του Θεού. Διότι «ο Θεός αγάπη εστί» (Α Ιωάν. 4, 16), και έτσι το μόνο που δύναται είναι να αγαπά. Κατά συνέπεια όλοι οι άνθρωποι όλων των αποχρώσεων και όλων των καταστάσεων, είτε πιστοί είτε άπιστοι, ως παιδιά του Θεού δέχονται την ίδια αγάπη από Εκείνον. Ο Θεός δεν κάνει διακρίσεις. Διακρίσεις κάνουμε εμείς οι εμπαθείς άνθρωποι. Έτσι για το αν βρεθούμε στην κόλαση ή στον παράδεισο, όπως λέμε, αποκλειστικά υπεύθυνοι είμαστε εμείς και όχι ο Θεός. Ο Θεός μας αγαπά. Εμείς δεν μπορούμε να γευτούμε την αγάπη Του, γιατί όσο μας δόθηκε ο χρόνος εργασίας και μετανοίας, αυτή η ζωή, εμείς φροντίσαμε να παραλύσουμε τις αισθήσεις μας. Γι αυτό και δεν πρέπει να μας παραξενεύουν τα λόγια μερικών Πατέρων της Εκκλησίας που μιλώντας για τα θέματα αυτά είπαν: ακόμη και στην περίπτωση που ο Θεός διά της βίας μας έβαζε στον Παράδεισο, ακόμη και στην υποτιθέμενη αυτή περίπτωση τον παράδεισο εμείς θα τον ζούσαμε ως κόλαση. Διότι ο εγωιστής άνθρωπος και στον παράδεισο θα είναι εγωιστής, άρα κολασμένος. Τι θα κρίνει βεβαίως την ένταξή μας στη μία ή στην άλλη κατάσταση είναι γνωστό και το αναφέραμε ακροθιγώς παραπάνω: η αγάπη που φροντίσαμε να κρατήσουμε στη ζωή αυτή και απέναντι στον Θεό και απέναντι στον συνάνθρωπο. Και κυρίως απέναντι στον συνάνθρωπο, διότι αυτή κρίνει την ποιότητα και της αγάπης μας προς τον Θεό. «Αν δεν αγαπάμε τον συνάνθρωπό μας που βλέπουμε επισημαίνει ο άγιος Ιωάννης πώς θα αγαπάμε τον Θεό που δεν βλέπουμε;» (Πρβλ. Α Ιωάν. 4, 20). Η αγάπη μας λοιπόν προς τον συνάνθρωπο συνιστά και το έσχατο κριτήριο, πάνω στο οποίο θα κριθούμε. Και πράγματι η παραβολή της Κρίσεως αυτό επισημαίνει: «Εφ όσον εποιήσατε ενί τούτων των αδελφών μου των ελαχίστων, εμοί εποιήσατε». Και «εφ όσον ουκ εποιήσατε ενί τούτων των αδελφών μου των ελαχίστων, ουδέ εμοί εποιήσατε». Τα λόγια του Κυρίου είναι συγκλονιστικά. Ο άλλος, ο πλησίον, ο συνάνθρωπος, όποιος κι αν είναι αυτός, δεν είναι απλώς ο άλλος. Πολύ περισσότερο δεν είναι ο ξένος και ο εχθρός, που μπορεί να φτάσει να θεωρηθεί και ως η κόλασή μου μία θεώρηση που συνιστά την ίδια την αθεΐα. Διότι πράγματι χωρίς Θεό στη ζωή μου, ο συνάνθρωπος αποτελεί για μένα μόνο απειλή και ενόχληση. Ο άλλος όμως, κατά τον Κύριο, είναι ο αδελφός του Κυρίου, κι ακόμη πιο πολύ: ο ίδιος ο Κύριος. Δεν αποτελούν συμβολικές εικόνες αυτά που λέγει ο Χριστός. Είναι οριστικές διατυπώσεις που αποκαλύπτουν την πραγματικότητα. Ο Χριστός αίρει την τύφλωσή μας και μας δίνει τα μάτια για να δούμε την κρυμμένη πραγματικότητα. Το έσχατο βάθος της. Και μας λέει: μη με ψάχνετε εδώ κι εκεί. Δείτε με στα πρόσωπα των συνανθρώπων σας. Ακόμη και σε εσάς τους ίδιους. Ο καθένας λοιπόν από εμάς συνιστά μία κρυμμένη παρουσία Χριστού. Αποτελούμε μία πρόκληση διαλόγου με τον Χριστό και μία βίωση της Δευτέρας Παρουσίας του πριν ακόμη εκείνη έρθει. Έτσι η κόλαση και ο παράδεισος δεν ανήκουν ως καταστάσεις στο μακρινό και απώτατο μέλλον. Είναι πολύ κοντά μας, μπροστά κυριολεκτικά στα μάτια μας, όσο είμαστε εμείς οι ίδιοι μπροστά στον εαυτό μας και μπροστά στον κάθε συνάνθρωπό μας. Την κόλαση και τον παράδεισο τα κερδίζουμε την κάθε στιγμή της ζωής μας. Κι αυτό που τώρα ζούμε, το ίδιο με μεγαλύτερη ένταση θα ζήσουμε και μετά τον θάνατό μας, και με την απόλυτη δυνατή ένταση μετά τον ερχομό του Χριστού στη Δευτέρα Του Παρουσία. Πόσο οικεία και γνώριμα λοιπόν ακούει στα αυτιά του ο Χριστιανός τα λόγια των Πατέρων του: «Από τον πλησίον μας εξαρτάται η ζωή και ο θάνατος. Γιατί αν κερδίσουμε τον αδελφό μας, τον Χριστό κερδίσαμε. Κι αν τον προσβάλουμε, Εκείνον χάσαμε». Η παραβολή της κρίσεως ακούγεται μία φορά τον χρόνο στην Εκκλησία μας, την Κυριακή των Απόκρεω σκαλοπάτι κι αυτή για την είσοδό μας στη Σαρακοστή. Περιττό να πούμε ότι λόγω της σπουδαιότητάς της θα πρέπει να την έχουμε μόνιμο και καθημερινό ανάγνωσμά μας και μελέτη του βίου μας διαπαντός. Διότι επικεντρώνει την προσοχή μας σε ό,τι πιο ουσιαστικό έχουμε να κάνουμε στη ζωή αυτή, από το οποίο εξαρτάται και το αιώνιο μέλλον μας: να αγαπάμε τους πάντες και τα πάντα. Για χάρη του Χριστού. Pelham Bay, Bronx, NY Under the umbrella of Medicaid, New York State offers community-based long-term care programs that provide supportive services for frail seniors and individuals who are disabled. These programs include coverage of home attendant services and day programs that help people stay at home if they are experiencing difficulties living independently. These programs were designed for middle income individuals as well as low-income individuals, so that they can receive the care that they need without becoming impoverished. Many people can qualify for these programs and protect their assets. The presentation on February 25 th will cover the following areas: 1) A description of the main program for community-based Medicaid that is designed to give support to individuals living in the community. 2) Eligibility rules and a general discussion of how people can adjust their assets to meet the eligibility requirements. 3) An explanation of how a recipient of Medicaid services can protect income that is needed to meet daily living expenses. 4) An overview of the application process. 5) The importance of getting certain documents done, such as a durable power-ofattorney and a health care proxy.
