PHILOPTOCHOS "APOKRIATIKO" SENIOR CITIZENS LUNCHEON Seniors are invited to the next Senior Citizens Luncheon this Thursday, January 19, at 11:30 am in the Coffee Room. The luncheon is sponsored by Debbie and Vasili Funti in memory of her grandparents, Mary and Pete Menutes, and by Vange Malachias in memory of her husband, Bill Malachias. Philoptochos thanks them for their support and looks forward to having all seniors attend this Mardi Gras "Apokriatiko" themed gathering. Plan now to come and enjoy a delicious meal and have fun playing bingo. ARE YOU A MEMBER OF PHILOPTOCHOS? With renewed enthusiasm toward the mission of Philoptochos, the chapter begins its membership drive for 2017. All ladies are invited to become proud members in the organization, attend meetings, and join in helping Philoptochos help others. You may ask yourself, "Why should I join Philoptochos?" You would have the opportunity to offer your time, talent, and treasure to meeting the needs of the church and local parish families and to serving the greater community. There are teams of women, who visit the sick and the elderly, who care for the Cathedral, who serve at Ozanam Inn, who organize events and fundraisers, and who volunteer in so many ways throughout the community. The numerous fundraisers benefit local and national causes that are worthy of your support. Philoptochos responds in times of crisis as with the financial struggles in Greece or when a natural disaster occurs in all parts of the world. See Membership Chairperson Cornelia Koniditsiotis for more information and join today. ANNUAL CUTTING OF THE VASILOPITA Philoptochos will hold its annual Cutting of the Vasilopita after Divine Liturgy today, SUNDAY, JANUARY 15. Similarly, other Philoptochos chapters across the Archdiocese host Vasilopita events in honor of Saint Basil the Great to benefit Saint Basil Academy in Garrison, New York. One of the most beautiful and inspiring traditions of the Greek Orthodox Church is the observance of Vasilopita in Saint Basil s honor. A most wise and compassionate clergyman, Saint Basil was the first person in history to establish a home for children. His feast day combines the cheer and happiness of the New Year with the glory of the birth of Christ and the Epiphany into what is known in the Orthodox Church as the Vasilopita Observance, symbolizing the joy of life everlasting. After presentation of the Vasilopita in church, Philoptochos members invite all parishioners to receive a piece of Saint Basil s bread at the reception in the Coffee Room. REGULAR GENERAL ASSEMBLY The first 2017 General Assembly will be held in the Hellenic Cultural Center next SUNDAY, JANUARY 22, 2017, immediately following Divine Liturgy. The agenda will include discussion and vote on the Proposed Budget for 2017, as well as regular business items. All members in Good Standing are encouraged to attend. Message from His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios of Atlanta THE HISTORY OF SAINT BASIL ACADEMY With the blessing of Archbishop Athenagoras, of Blessed Memory, the Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society purchased the 400-acre Jacob Ruppert estate in Garrison, New York, on the shores of the Hudson River in 1944 and named the estate Saint Basil Academy. The original intention was to make the Academy an orphanage or children s home. It is no longer and orphanage. Today, the facility has expanded in scope to be a well-equipped Residential Child Care Center with modern dormitories, a gymnasium/auditorium, indoor swimming pool, beautiful chapel, library, and all the necessary comforts of a loving home. The National Philoptochos has responded to the needs of the Academy and its resident children for over sixty (60) years with support of the operating budget through the annual Vasilopita appeal and the sisterhood of Saint Basil for special needs. Before the creation of Hellenic College in Brookline, Massachusetts, the Academy also established a women s junior college: Saint Basil Academy Teachers College. The Teachers Training program offered a three-years course of study until 1973 when it merged with and relocated to Hellenic College. The Academy is also the home to the late Archbishop Michael s tomb. Archbishop Michael had a special love for the Academy, and under his leadership, it flourished in the 1950s in an era of growth and capital improvements. In recent years the Academy provides a safe haven and home for Orthodox children, offering a nurturing environment while attending to the children s developmental, educational, spiritual, and material needs. It is licensed by New York State as a residential home and is a developmental center. The resident children attend the local public schools in the Garrison, New York, area. The Academy is not on the Archdiocese annual budget but depends on funding from the parishes of the Archdiocese, National and Metropolis Philoptochos Societies, AHEPA, Daughters of Penelope, and other organizations and individuals. The National Ladies Philoptochos Society is a major financial donor, as well as the property owner. Your donation today at our annual Vasilopita Celebration will help fund the operation of this worthwhile ministry. Please be generous, and thank you for your love and support.

Resurrection Apolytikion Plagal Tone 1 Let us worship the Word, O ye faithful, praising Him that with the Father and the Spirit is cobeginningless God, Who was born of a pure Virgin that we all be saved; for He was pleased to mount the Cross in the flesh that He assumed, accepting thus to endure death. And, by His glorious rising, He also willed to resurrect the dead. Apolytikion of the Saint Tone 4 Since you had with fervor longed after the Lord from your youth, you left the world with its delights and nobly strived in valiant ascetic deeds. You pitched your hut before the gates of your parents; you broke the demons' snares, O all-blessed Father. And, therefore, as is meet, has Christ God glorified you, O John. Apolytikion of the Holy Trinity Plagal Tone 4 Blessed are You, O Christ our God, who made fishermen all-wise, sending upon them the Holy Spirit and, through them, netting the world. O Loving One, glory to You. Kontakion of Epiphany Tone 1 Your birth sanctified a Virgin's womb and properly blessed the hands of Symeon. Having now come and saved us O Christ our God, give peace to Your commonwealth in troubled times and strengthen those in authority, whom You love, as only the loving One.
THE EPISTLE Colossians 3:4-11 You, O Lord, shall keep us and preserve us. Save me, O Lord, for the godly man has failed. BRETHREN, when Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience. In these you once walked, when you lived in them. But now put them all away; anger, wrath, malice, slander, and foul talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old nature with its practices and have put on the new nature, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. Here there cannot be Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free man, but Christ is all, and in all. THE GOSPEL Luke 17:12-19 At that time, as Jesus entered a village, He was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance and lifted up their voices and said: "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us." When He saw them He said to them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." And as they went they were cleansed. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus feet, giving Him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. Then said Jesus: "Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?" And He said to him: "Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well."
