SAINT-SPYRIDON.ORG Catechism 101 The Christmas season marks a truly joyous time of the year, and as with every celebration the Church asks us to properly prepare in order to truly comprehend the joy and meaning of the feast. As Orthodox Christians we prepare for Christmas within a path set in the wisdom of our Orthodox Tradition. Our journey calls us to the observance of fasting and charity, prayer and remembrance of the righteous Old Testament forefathers and prophets, the forty-day liturgy highlighting a great series of saints feast days, including of course the great feast of Saint Spyridon. In quiet anticipation, we prepare for Christmas Day not as an end onto itself, but as the beginning of a new life. The Word of God, the eternal Logos, becomes one with us. God decides to enter human history through His In- Feast Day of our Patron Saint Spyridon Sunday, December 10th, 2017 Paraklesis to St. Spyridon 6:00 p.m. Monday, December 11th, 2017 Hierarchical Vespers 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 12th, 2017 Orthros & Hierarchical Divine Liturgy 8:00 a.m.

Custodian And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. 2 The Voice carnation, walking among us, talking to us, raising us to our new destiny of inheriting the Kingdom of God. Within the gloominess of human history, the great Light of Christ makes our life ever-brighter by revealing to us our ultimate destiny as St. Athanasios aptly stated: God become man so we can become god. In the Orthodox Faith the feast of the Nativity of our Lord highlights the centrality of the person of Jesus Christ. He is the Incarnate Lord involved in human affairs. He came to reveal the glory of God by dispelling all the false gods that mankind had devised in the darkness of paganism. The pagan man perceived in nature the apparent sources of life and transformed them into gods. He worshiped the sun and the moon, the rivers and the mountains. He imagined gods in the constellations and in four legged beasts. In the pagan view of the world there is an eternal battle between good and evil, balancing yin and yang, with man in the middle of it all. By deifying the conflicts in nature the pagan man could justify the conflicts within himself, leading to a dualistic view of the world where good and evil is subjective and determined by each individual. This paganism is alive and well in our post-christian world where one can observe Christmas without Christ, and celebrate a holiday without seeking holiness. The significance of the Incarnation of Christ is contained in the revelation that creation is created by God and everything was created good. There is no eternal battle between good and evil, the flesh and the spirit, the forces of darkness and light. Sin and evil are not ontological, but are rather contained in the choices of men and angels. As choices, they are bound in time and will one day be no more. All creation is good not only because the Creator made it so, but also because He made it capable of communing with Himself. Think about one of the hymns of the Nativity where all Creation participates in welcoming the Incarnate Lord: What shall we offer you, O Christ, because you have appeared on earth as a man for our sakes? For each of the creatures made by you offers you its thanks: the Angels, their hymn; the heavens, the Star; the Shepherds, their wonder; the Magi, their gifts; the earth, the Cave; the desert, the Manger; and we, a Virgin Mother. God before the ages, have mercy on us. In Christ, all creation lives up to the goodness bestowed by its Creator, is redeemed by His love and mercy, and finds its destiny of being renewed upon His return. In Christ, the only eternal force in the universe is God and He is at the center of all that exists. He is the source of life, our redemption, and our eternity. As Orthodox Christians we loudly proclaim: Christ is born, glorify Him. Christ is the gift; He is our salvation; He sanctifies our body, our soul, our entire existence just as He hoped for when He created us in His image and likeness. He is the reason to celebrate and to rejoice; He is the One for Whom we ought to be grateful. We will struggle against the pagan spirit of our time and never give in to it. We will celebrate this Christmas holiday and every holiday glorifying our Lord, seeking holiness, being good for the sake of the One Who is Good, rejoicing in the grace and love of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. Fr.Tilemahos

Sunday School News As the holidays approach, the Sunday School is working hard to bring the joy of the season to the lives of those in our parish. We would like to thank all students who participated in our annual clothing drive. The Philoptochos ladies distributed the items collected on Tuesday November 14 th at the Feed the Hungry event at Annunciation Cathedral in Chicago. It was a great blessing to provide these items to the homeless, as they were truly appreciative to receive them. Many of our students continue to donate to our food pantry every week. This month, we are collecting canned goods, cereal and pasta. Giving to those in need is something we should do all year round, but especially at the times the need is greatest during the holidays when we are all remembering what we are thankful for. On Sunday December 3 rd during Sunday School, we will be assigning roles for our annual Christmas Pageant. We will ask for volunteers for the various parts first, so please encourage your children. Pageant rehearsal is Saturday December 16 th at 10am. Costume assignments will take place at that time. If you would like to help, we could use the extra hands to get our students fitted into their costumes. The Christmas Pageant will take place right after the Divine Liturgy on December 17 th. Please make plans to come to the Christmas Pageant and share in the blessings of the holidays with our Sunday School and Greek School family. There will be no Sunday School on December 24 th and December 31 st, so students can worship with their families. I would like to thank the Sunday School staff for all their support and commitment. These teachers are always looking for new ways to engage the students in their lessons and constantly striving to teach their students as much as possible. I would also like to thank the students for coming and participating in their classes with a true learning spirit. We are all working together to provide your children with an excellent Orthodox foundation and hope that you will continue to bring them each week. The best to all of you and your families from the Sunday School staff and many blessings for the New Year. Zoe Kopanis, Sunday School Director DIAKONIA AGAPES - ALMSGIVING But whoever has this world s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him? (John 3:17). We wish to thank all our parishioners and friends of St. Spyridon for remembering our Food Pantry. Monday, November 20th, thirty four families received Thanksgiving Food Baskets. As you know, our Food Pantry helps families that have a need for assistance. Many thanks to Stella Parhas, Becky Righetti and their committee of volunteers and donors who helped with the Thanksgiving Baskets. Our Food Pantry also helps the friends of St. Spyridon, on a daily and weekly basis. It is very important that we keep our Food Pantry filled at all times, so that we do not turn anyone away because of lack of food. If you wish to donate food or monetary donation for our Food Pantry and Christmas Baskets, please bring your items/ donations to the Church office or the Pantry Donation Box. Please remember the bank for the needy in the narthex. Thanks to your generosity this past year we have been able to offer financial relief to families and individuals in need. P.T.A. NEWS The PTA hosted Godparents Brunch on Sunday, November 12th with a thankful for Godparents theme. The church was filled with Godparents and their Godchildren and together enjoyed a delicious brunch. We would like to thank the Vardalos family for donating the food for the brunch to honor the memory of Mr. Nick Vardalos. May his memory be eternal. We would also like to thank all the donors and volunteers who made our Godparents brunch memorable. On Saturday, November 18th we had 27 painters for Pallet Paint night. What a great event! On Friday, December 8th, from 5:00 to 6:30, the PTA will be hosting a Christmas party while the teachers are holding their Parent Teacher conferences. A link to sign up will be published on Facebook and Remind to help with stations and food. We are also looking forward to Saint Spyridon Feast Day on December 12th, and the Christmas Pageant on the 17th. Vasilopita will be cut on January 7th for Sunday School and January 8th for Greek School. If you are interested in baking a vasilopita, please contact a PTA board member. The last day for Greek school for Christmas break is Friday, December 22nd and will resume on Monday, January 8th. Have a great blessed and joyous holiday! Tessie Jones, PTA President This past month we had fun with apples. We made pretend apple pies and organized apples by color. The kids had so much fun and did such a great job! Please plan to attend. ANNOUNCEMENTS Patriarch Athenagoras Awarded to Ms. Ruth Faklis On Sunday, November 19th, at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, our very own Ms. Ruth Faklis was presented with the Patriarch Athenagoras Award. Ruth Faklis's dedication to the choir has not gone unnoticed. With FORTY (that's 40!!!!) years of service under her belt, Ruth's participation and passion has not dwindled at the least. As a matter of fact, her participation, passion, participation, dedication and devotion have only GROWN through this church activity. For many years, Ruth has participated in the annual Choir Federation Conference. She has also served on the board for the Federation and this past year, Ruth served as the PRESIDENT of the Metropolis's Choir Federation. It is BECAUSE OF HER that the Federation celebrated their 60th anniversary on the day our very own St. Spyridon celebrated its 100 year celebration during the Divine Liturgy on October 15th, 2017. She sacrificed HOUR upon HOUR looking into every detail to make the weekend a huge success for its participants. Her support to the choir encourages others and it is truly a BLESSING to have her in choir and a member of our parish. The Patriarch Athenagoras I Award was initiated by the National Forum of Greek Orthodox Church Musicians and established in 1996 as a means of giving recognition within an individual metropolis to meritorious individuals whose metropolitan contributions to the music ministry of the Church are worthy of this distinction. The recipients shall have significantly contributed talents and/or service to the development and perpetuation of the choirs within the metropolises served by the Eastern Federation of Greek Orthodox Church Musicians (E.F.G.O.C.M.). By so doing, these individuals shall have fostered the aims and goals of E.F.G.O.C.M. and the National Forum of Greek Orthodox Church Musicians. Congratulations! VASILOPITA CELEBRATION The Community Vasilopita will be on Monday, January 1st, after the Divine Liturgy. We ask that all parishioners and friends join us for this very special beginning for the New Year. 6 The Voice

Dear Parishioners and Friends of Philoptochos, Greetings! Our Philoptochos ladies have had a very busy month with Philoptochos activities and preparations for our Annual Christmas Craft Show, which will take place on December 2nd and 3rd. We are once again asking for pastry donations from all of you for this event and for your active participation in helping us during the two days, will be greatly appreciated. PRESENTATION OF SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS Each year since 1990 the Philoptochos Society of St. Spyridon has promoted and supported the education of our youth by awarding outstanding students in our community, with a $1,000 dollar scholarship. This year the Scholarship Committee, with the distinguished chairman, Mrs. Kathy Korbakes, recommended 2 candidates with outstanding academic achievement. Equally impressive was their involvement and dedication to community service and to their church. The recipients were Mr. Konstantine Alikakos and Miss Politimi Labrakis. Dino is the son of Fr. Tilemahos and Presbytera Georgia. He is currently attending Loyola University and upon completing his studies there, he plans to enter Medical School. His aspiration after Medical School is to participate in the Doctors without Boarders Program in underdeveloped countries, where he will offer medical service to those that are suffering and possibly even save them from the brink of death. Our young lady is Politimi Labrakis. She is also currently attending Loyola University and her major is premedicine with chemistry major. Politimi is the daughter of Mr. Konstantino Labrakis and Pamela Labrakis. Some of Politimi s accomplishments were, participating in a project that raised $5,000 to build a well in South Africa that would provide purified drinking water to the neighborhoods. She was also credited with initiating a fundraiser for a teacher s wife with breast cancer. We admire the many leadership qualities that we see in this young woman. On behalf of all the members of our Philoptochos Sisterhood we congratulate Constantino and Politimi and we believe that because of their faith and Orthodox values, both of these shinning stars will create a beautiful world tomorrow! FEED THE HUNGRY PROGRAM Our Philoptochos ladies on November 14th participated in the Feed the Hungry Program at the Annunciation Cathedral. We all experienced the joy of serving and helping our brothers and sisters who are in need. This year we initiated a winter clothing drive and we thank our Sunday School children for their participation and donation for this charitable project! PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS ST. SPYRIDON FEAST DAY Our community will celebrate the feast day of our St. Spyridon with Great Vespers on Monday, Dec. 11th and Divine Liturgy on Tuesday, December 12th. In order to successfully host the reception for both days, we are asking for Lenten pastry donations. Your offering will be greatly appreciated. In closing, I would like to commend each and every one of you, for your love and dedication to Philoptochos. Let us all continue to be Doers of the word of Our Lord and not Hearers only. With Christian Agape, Toula Georgiopoulos, President St. Spyridon Hellenic Orthodox Church 7

GOYA NEWS GOYA held an outing at SkyZone in Orland Park, on November 21st. Twenty five Goyans came together for a great night of fun and fellowship. Thank you to all the families that took the time to come out. The Goyans also decorated the Christmas Tree during their November 28th meeting, and they decorated the front of the church with Christmas lights and our manger icon. The Goyans will be caroling later this month and they are planning on visiting the St. Iakovos Retreat Center over Christmas break. Christmas Caroling December 22nd The Goyans will be Christmas Caroling once again this year! We are looking forward to spreading Christmas cheer with our fellow parishioners. If anyone is interested in opening their homes on Friday, December 22nd, 7:00 p.m. 9:00 p.m., for this Christmas tradition, they may contact the church office as soon as possible to make reservations. Greek Dance Troupe On Wednesday nights, over fifteen teenagers have been coming together to learn various Greek Dances with Angelo Angelos as the instructor. The group welcomes all 7th-12th graders who are interested in Greek Dancing and the group is in the process of coming up with a name for themselves and purchasing costumes in preparation for their first performances starting next spring. New members are always welcome! St. Spyridon Hellenic Orthodox Church 9
