THE SOURCE October 2014 Issue # 10-14 HOLY TRINITY GREEK ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL CAMP HILL, PA Church growth and funding missionary work Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: Toward the end of the sacrament of Baptism we read from the Gospel of Matthew a passage wherein Christ tells us that we need to carry the Gospel to the whole world: Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit (Matt. 28:19) This is more than a polite suggestion, rather it is a command addressed to every Christian by the Lord Himself. Following this command starts at home: Be a good Christian yourself, do your best to raise your children to follow the commandments of Christ and the teachings of the church. Take care of the local needy, sick and imprisoned and by your example you will win many to Christ without ever needing to apply for a passport. By the way, surveys indicate that many more people would come to church if people would just take the small risk of rejection and ask them to come. I think this is because most people fear going into situations where they aren t sure they will be welcome, especially if they don t know the customs (when to sit or stand, etc.), so knowing someone will be there to show them around helps a lot. You could take church growth to the next level by participating in short term mission trips within the U.S. (FOCCUS and YOCAMA) or abroad (OCMC). Each of us has a calling to fulfill when it comes to church growth and probably only a few of us are called to be long-term, foreign missionaries. However, long-term foreign missions work is an integral part of being a Christian and we need to help the people called to doing this work. Recently, I read an excellent proposal for how to do this written by Nathan Hoppe. I met Nathan back in 1995-1997 when we were students together at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. Since then, Nathan and his family have been serving continuously in Albania as missionaries. Albania s Orthodox church suffered tremendously under the communists in the 20 th Century and had to be re-built from almost nothing under the leadership of Archbishop Anastasios. The resurrection of the Church in Albania has become a textbook case of how amazing things can happen in the Mission field. (continued on next page)
THE SOURCE OCTOBER 2014 Page 2 Perhaps it is best if I just quote Nathan Hoppe: A challenge to substantial partnership The work of missions is a partnership between local sending parishes and missionaries who are sent, in order to be faithful to our Lord's command to make disciples of all nations. During these months in the US we have been challenging churches and individuals to think more strategically about this partnership. Churches tend to have a somewhat haphazard approach to the support of missionaries. They give generously to those who visit and occasionally send support between visits, but they make no substantial, ongoing commitment. Though well-intentioned, this results in two undesirable outcomes. First, missionaries are required to spend a great deal more of their time and energy on support team development. They also do not have a stable support base freeing them up to focus on ministry. Second, churches do not have a strong sense of connection to the mission work that they support. Often parishioners are not even aware of what they have or are supporting. This means that they are not praying fervently or giving sacrificially towards missions. I believe that it would be ideal if each missionary had about 10 churches that partner with them in a substantial way. This would allow the missionary to focus their support team development time on ministering to these 10 churches and would allow the church to have a vital sense of connection with the missionaries that they are sending. For this to be possible, churches need to choose to make a substantial investment in the ministry of a limited number of missionaries. The level of investment will vary with the size and resources of each parish, but a basic rule of thumb is that it costs approximately the same to send a missionary family as it does to support a clergy family in the US. Therefore a church should consider an investment equivalent to 10% of the total cost for supporting their priest each month in a monthly donation to the support of a missionary. In this way 10 churches could support one missionary. Some larger churches may be able to support several missionaries on this level while smaller churches may not be able to reach this level yet. If parishes would begin to follow this model for the support of missionaries it would have a dramatic impact on the number of missionaries that are deployed around the world, and it would allow us to be much more effective in fulfilling our Lord's command to make disciples of all nations. Obviously, this is a big change in thinking. It would require changes at the budget level of the parish as well as our personal giving rates. However, the benefits to the parish as well as the missionaries would be substantial. I hope you will think and pray to discern your calling in the realm of church growth. God bless! +Fr. Mark

THE SOURCE OCTOBER 2014 Page 5 PARISH COUNCIL Dear Parishioners, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral was honored to have hosted the Metropolis Clergy- Laity Philoptochos Assembly on Sept 25-27. This is the first time that I know that this convention was held in the eastern part of the Metropolis. I hope that we proved to be excellent hosts. We are fortunate to have volunteers that made this convention possible. Our Camp Hill Cathedral ranks as one of the five largest contributors in the metropolis to the metropolis financial budget. We should be proud of our Cathedral. On Sunday, October 19, 2014 we will have a Parish Assembly meeting to approve candidates for election to the Parish Council. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of these elections which will take place in November. I hope that many of you volunteer and sign up to run for Parish Council. Take an interest in your Church and participate in the decision process. This is your church so please step up and participate. We need the church even when we may not be conscious of this need. Many thanks to the Building and Grounds committee for their recent work. The classrooms downstairs have been given a new coat of paint and the floors were buffed and waxed. Many hours of volunteer work was dedicated to the supervision and scheduling of these efforts. More work needs to be done, like improving the social hall, parking lot, and roof floor covering. We must be responsible about continuing to maintain our church facilities. Sunday school is in full swing. The teachers have their lessons planned and are ready to teach your children about our faith. Please provide them that opportunity by bringing your children. It is not too late to sign your children up for the various programs, Sunday school being the most important. I want to thank all the volunteers that work hard to make the church programs a success. THE SOURCE OCTOBER 2014 Page 6 VOTER ELIGIBILITY FOR PARISH COUNCIL ELECTIONS In order to be eligible to vote in the Parish Council Elections, an individual must be a member in good standing of the Parish, as defined in the Uniform Parish Regulations of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. In Chapter One, Article 18, Section 1, of these regulations, a parishioner in good standing is defined as: "Any person, eighteen years of age or over, who was baptized and chrismated according to the rites of the Orthodox Church and lives according to the tenets of the Orthodox faith." The Uniform Parish Regulations also provide that a member in good standing is one who has met his or her stewardship obligation to the Parish. Under Article VI, Section 1, of our Parish Bylaws, this stewardship obligation is defined as follows: "For purposes of voting in the annual election of Parish Council members, a parishioner in good standing is defined as any member of the Parish who submits a completed stewardship pledge card on or before the end of the Ecclesiastical Year, August 31, prior to the elections on the third Sunday in November of each calendar year." In addition, Article VI, Section 6, of the Parish Bylaws provides that "Absentee ballots shall be made available to parishioners who for physical or health reasons are unable to personally cast a ballot on the day of elections and who are otherwise able, competent, and eligible to vote." Requests for absentee ballots will be available in the church office. Please remember that if you did not turn in a pledge card, you will NOT eligible to vote in the Fall elections for Parish Council, NOR are you will you be able to run as a candidate. August 31, 2014 was the deadline to submit your stewardship pledge card. JOACHIM AND ANNA SOCIETY The Saints Joachim and Anna Society held its first meeting of the 2014-2015 ecclesiastical year at 11:00 am on Tuesday, September 2, in the Philoptochos Room, with about 40 people in attendance. The Society's plans for the coming year were discussed, followed by a luncheon hosted by Mary Touloumes and Ricky Zervanos. A meeting of the Society is scheduled to take place at 11:00 am on Tuesday, October 7, in the Philoptochos Room. The guest speaker will be Patti Gustin-Yanich, of Yanich & Associates, who will make a presentation on the topic of Medical Insurance Options. The Society will hold a meeting in the Philoptochos Room at 11:00 am on Tuesday, November 4, and the guest speaker will be Arlene Donnelly, Project Manager of the Dollar Energy Fund/PPL Epower Team. She will speak on the subject of achieving savings on the use of energy in the home. Membership in the Saints Joachim and Anna Society is open to all parishioners age 55 and over. And thus a precedent was established. The ladies of our community gathered together, worked, gossiped, and enjoyed each other s company while doing good deeds and to this day they haven t stopped aiding our church and our community. Unfortunately all the individuals pictured here have passed on but they have left the legacy of what is now our present day Philoptochos, of helping those in need while still enjoying each other s company. THE SOURCE OCTOBER 2014 Page 15 This is a service in which the faithful are provided a way to celebrate Liturgy in the evening. The service begins with Great Vespers and at a certain point merges with our familiar Divine Liturgy, and is thus known as Vesperal Liturgy. Holy Communion is offered, and just as with Sunday morning, the chalice is reserved only for practicing Orthodox Christians in good standing with the Church. It is also essential that the faithful prepare themselves for this service by means of fasting. The same guideline is given here as with the Lenten evening Presanctified Liturgy : The service.. presupposes the faithful arrive at church having fasted for the day. If one needs to eat something: try to keep your meal simple, and if possible, abstain from food and drink at least 6 hours before the service. Note also: in a larger parish such as ours where a second priest celebrates liturgy the next morning, the faithful attend one or the other service (but do NOT receive Holy Communion in both services).
