The understanding of landscape MITSUBOSHI Muneo Key words : landscape, far-sense, near-sense, sensation, need Abstract The nature of landscape which was a product of the visual sensation, a far-sense, was analyzed in terms of the dichotomy of the farsense and the near-sense. Taking their innate nature or functions into considerations, it was argued that such landscapes seemed to be highly appreciated as those in which strong perspectives could be obtained and of which field was clearly separated into figure and ground as the Gestalt psychologists assumed for the perception of object. Bright field could also be appreciated, because it satisfied the need of the visual sensation. On the other hand, the landscapes, which were considered to satisfy the need of near-senses, typically the tactile sensation, could also be appreciated. Thus soft, warm, and round-shaped landscapes could be such candidates. The appreciation of landscape should depend on various factors including the far-and near-senses and presumably higher processes.
