March/April 2011 Volume 9 Issue 2 A publication of the Greek Orthodox Church of Saint George The Voice of Saint George The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the LORD. (Matt.3:3) «Φωνὴ βοῶντος ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ, Ἑτοιμάσατε τὴν ὁδὸν Κυρίου» A Message From Our Pastor Dear Parishioners, Here we are again to the part of the year where we spiritually prepare ourselves for the period called by our Holy Church, the Holy and Sacred Forty Days of Lent. For this spiritual odyssey, our Church prepares us with the three Sundays before Lent begins. In This Issue Greek School Greek Independence Day Parade 2011 Festival news Stewardship Report General Assembly AHEPA/Daughters Scholarships In Every Issue Pastor s Message President s Message Church Calendar PTO News Sunday School News G.O.Y.A. News Philoptochos News Voice of St. George Submission Dates From the 365 days of the year, we are called to live these 40 days before Holy Week, differently: with abstinence, with more prayer and self-skepticism, with self criticism and discipline. For these exercises of virtues, our Church helps us with many different services starting with the Great Compline, which is a personal prayer service of mankind towards his Creator, God. O Lord of Spirits be with us, we do not have anybody to help us during our difficult times except You. Lord of the Spirits, have mercy on us. All the psalms read at this Service from the Old Testament in stanzas, refer to the conversation between David and God. These psalms mention different conditions of human souls and their relations with God. During this service, we also seek the help of all the Saints and the power of the Holy Cross to cover and empower us, so we may continue this spiritual experience. Every Wednesday and Friday during Lent, we perform the special Pre-sanctified Divine Liturgy which comes to us from the first monks from the depths of the desert. They composed this Divine Liturgy, with the help of Saint James the Brother of God, so they could receive Holy Communion daily in their huts, with Communion that they brought from the main church of their monastery on Sunday. It is a special Divine Liturgy that also prays for the catechumens, those who are preparing to join the Orthodox faith. It prays for their enlightenment and their salvation. In comparison with the two other Divine Liturgies of Saint John Chrysostom and Saint Basil the Great, the Pre-sanctified is the shortest one. The faithful who fast during this period, through this Divine Liturgy of the Pre-sanctified, have the opportunity to join themselves with their Lord more often during weekdays. On Sundays of the Great Lent, our Church uses the Divine Liturgy written by St. Basil the Great whose prayers are much longer than the ones in the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, so the liturgical hymnology is longer when the clergy reads the prayers. It would be nice if you have the opportunity to read the Liturgical prayers of Saint Basil the Great, to see the spiritual wealth of its content which will uplift you spiritually. In the beginning of this Holy and Great Season and after Cheese Fare Sunday, our Church performs the solemn Vesper of Forgiveness. At the end of the Vesper Service, the faithful ask forgiveness from God and the Saints by kissing the icons of the icon screen that separates the main Church from the Altar. They also kiss each other, both known and unknown brothers and sisters and ask forgiveness in faith in the church. It is the beginning of exercising the virtue of humility of mankind by asking forgiveness from each other and the start of a new spiritual odyssey with forgiven and forgiving heart. As our Lord was humilified and emptied Himself for our salvation, we also humble ourselves by asking for forgiveness from each other.

March/April 2011 Page 4 During Lent, every Friday night we sing a special prayer to the Virgin Mary in our Church. This Hymn is called the Salutations to the Virgin Mary or Akathist Hymn. It is a special prayer service that is a dialogue from the faithful to the Virgin Mary, who sings to Her and praises Her. These hymns were written by an unknown Byzantine hymnographer for the miracle that took place in 610 A.D. when Constantinople was miraculously freed from the siege of the Avars. The first time this hymn was chanted was an all night Vigil Service in the Church of Vlacherna in Constantinople. During this service, the Virgin Mary appeared and enlightened the whole church. It is called the Akathist Hymn because we do not sit when it is chanted, as the Virgin Mary was present during its first performance. There are four stanzas, each stanza is chanted every Friday night during Lent, but on the fifth Friday the entire hymn which follows the Greek Alphabet from Alpha to Omega is chanted. It refers to the life of the Virgin Mary and Her interceding in our lives. This is the way our Holy Orthodox Church with all these special Services helps us Christians experience this spiritual odyssey. This odyssey leads us to the Glorious Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The Holy Lenten period of forty days is concluded with the Services of the Holy and Great Week, starting on Palm Sunday evening with the Bridegroom Services. All the Hymns of Holy Week are very powerful for our spiritual well being. We live the passion of Christ by co crucifying, co bearing and co resurrecting ourselves with Him. The Readings of Holy Week are very rich and meaningful with a potent hymnology. Those who follow, live and experience the beauty of these ancient Services of the Lenten Season and the Holy Week, have the opportunity to an uplifting and empowering experience, because they are composed for our spiritual well being and personal salvation. God, through His Church, invites mankind to attend these Holy Services for his/her benefit and personal salvation. What do you do? Do you respond to this Sacred Invitation? I wish you a blessed and spiritually uplifting Lenten Season. May God Bless and forgive all of us. The Pastor, Very Rev. Alexander Kile Archimandrite General Assembly Meeting Sunday, March 20, 2011 We ask that everyone attend this meeting. Many important issues will be discussed concerning the progress of our community. This is where your voice will be heard! First call: March 13, 2011

The Voice of St. George Page The Voice of St. George Page 7 President s Message Dear Parishioners, This is my first message to you since I was elected President of the Board of Trustees of the St. George Greek Orthodox Church and Community. By the time you read this, we will have a new priest in our Community, Fr Nicholas Pastrikos. This change gives us an opportunity for a new beginning and the start of a new chapter in our almost century long history. On behalf of all of us, I would like to thank Fr Alex for his years of service to St. George and to wish him well in his new assignment. I would also like to thank members who served on the previous Board but are not on this one: Vange Emanuel, George Petrantonakis, and Mike Sirimis, for their service and dedication during the past two years. I want to welcome back the Board members who got re-elected and the newly elected members Tom Kouridakis, John Lyssikatos, and George Zalokostas. Thanks and gratitude also to my predecessor, Manny Manioudakis, under whose leadership so much was accomplished for the betterment of our Church proper and the surrounding Church owned properties, as well as the very important acquisition of 7 Kroeger Lane. I would like to start my term as President by asking all of the Community to reflect on the different aspects of what it means to be a member of the St. George congregation--to reflect on what it means to each of us spiritually, culturally, socially and financially. Once we have done that, let us look towards the future and define in those terms how our Community can evolve towards new goals that we collectively set. Our almost 100 years old heritage as a Community is excellent and enviable. Our evolution is impressive and commendable. We began as a Community of Greek immigrants and have evolved into a diverse Community. We are now a predominantly younger Community full of promise and potential. How can we harness this energy to revitalize our Community? Your 15 elected Board members cannot answer that question without the involvement of each and every parishioner. For this reason, the next thing I would like to do, to accomplish, is to engage everyone in our diverse Community in the participation of the affairs of our Church. I invite the older members for their wisdom, the middle aged members for their resourcefulness, and the younger members for their energy. In the fast paced world we live in, we guard the few free moments that we have for ourselves, expecting someone else to pick up the slack in our obligations. But, the existence of and the need to find solutions for the problems of our Church do not pause while we take a breather. They still demand solutions. So, we all need to contribute. There are many activities, many organizations, many committees that need your participation, your input, your contributions. So, please, become involved---the gratification is an immeasurable reward! The preparations for our annual festival have begun. The festival is one event that brings everyone in our Community together and annually reinforces our dual nature of Hellenism and Orthodoxy. Our millennia-old renowned Greek hospitality, Philoxenia, is a manifestation of our Hellenism. Our reinvesting of the proceeds of the festival to the running, maintenance and improvement of our Church is our determination and commitment to perpetuate our Orthodox Faith. Organizationally, faithful to another of our Greek traits, that of leaving everything for the last moment (anyone remember the 2004 Athens Olympics??), we do not participate in the festival planning meetings. This year let s do a lot better on that front. Become part of the festival preparation process. After the festival is all said and done, even though we will all be exhausted, let s not just disperse, basking in the experience, as we usually do. Instead, let s keep that momentum of togetherness alive. Let s keep the level of our commitment alive. Let s initiate a new concept of dedication and responsibility. Let s continue to participate in the life and activities of our Church and Community. Let s launch a new era of service. Only those who have learned the power of sincere and selfless contribution experience life's deepest joy: true fulfillment. Vassilis Keramidas President

March/April 2011 Page 10 Sunday School Dear Parents and Members of our St. George Community, We hope you are anxiously awaiting the arrival of spring and with the Lenten period upon us, we wish everyone Kali Sarakosti. On behalf of Father Alex, our teachers and staff, we would like to thank our community for your support with our Religious Education Program that provides an Orthodox Christian foundation of faith and values to our children. Our Religious Education program is proceeding for the 2010-2011 ecclesiastical year with vigor and enthusiasm. Each class is following the established curriculum developed by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America Department of Religious Education, and participates in special projects that enhance their learning process. We also offer a music program that includes the teaching of many liturgical hymns. Each class participates in the Divine Liturgy where their knowledge of our Holy Orthodox Church is reinforced. We recently introduced appropriate excursions to our program. On the 29 th of December, we visited Spring Hills Somerset Assisted Living & Memory Care Center, where we spent a pleasant afternoon singing Christmas carols in both English and Greek to the residents, sharing some of our baked goods, and conversing with them. They were so filled with joy by our presence. We especially thank our conductor, Mrs. L. Lambros, who not only entertained the residents by herself before we all assembled, but then lead us into a flawless performance. Our trip to Spring Hills was followed by a visit to the Hendrick Fisher House, which dates back to 1688, and is decorated with 18 Christmas trees, 170 carolers, 40 nativity sets, and countless handmade ornaments. We thank Mr. P. Stevens and Mrs. N. Bourodimos for these arrangements. We also participated in the Three Holy Hierarchs festivities with readings by three of our Teacher Aides. We are very excited about the upcoming St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival to be held on Sunday, April 3 rd following the Divine Liturgy: Students from Grades 7, 8, 9 and Teen Rap are currently preparing their presentations. The purpose of the St. John Chrysostom Festival is to give our youth an opportunity to research, learn, write and speak about their Orthodox Faith, Church and Heritage. It is the hope that this experience will strengthen their understanding and appreciation of our faith and cultivate spiritual growth. Our first place participants will represent our church at the District Festival. We ask all parents of Grades 7 through Teen Rap to encourage your children to participate in this outstanding experience. With Holy Week upon us, we ask parents to discuss with their 8 to 13 year-old daughters about volunteering to be Myrrh bearing Women. The Myrrh-bearers or Μυροφόραι were women that followed Jesus during his ministry, who were with him during his Passion, who came to his tomb each day following his Crucifixion, and who first witnessed His Resurrection. What an honor to participate in this humbling experience! If your daughter(s) is(are) interested in volunteering, or if you want additional information, please visit our Administration desk, which is located on the second floor. Lastly, when passing by our bulletin board on the 1 st floor, please glance at the display of our students original works. Each month we exhibit the works of a different grade, on a theme appropriate for that month. We pray that we continue to have a successful year. lmalahias@yahoo.com. March/April 2011 Page 12 Stewardship Report Below is the Stewardship Report as of December 31, 2010. In summary, we received 624 pledges totaling $231,785 for an average pledge of $371. The 624 pledges compare unfavorably to the 652 pledges we had as of December 2009, and the 631 pledges we received in 2008. Of the total pledges, $225,310 has been collected. Note that this has been the lowest pledge year we have had in many years. As you know, Stewardship plays a vital role in supporting the functioning of our Church. Without your support, we would not be able to keep the Church functioning. Please consider giving more this year. The purpose of the St. George Stewardship program is to help our faithful understand the need for their commitment of time, talents and treasures to the Church. All that happens in our Church happens by the Grace of God and your support. Our financial goal this year is to fulfill the operating budget of our Church through the contributions of our parishioners. An average pledge of $830 per family is needed in order to cover our annual operating expenses. You can see why St. George depends so much on you. Your increased contribution to our Church will help us achieve even more in the year 2011. Please submit your Stewardship pledge for 2011. Forms are in the office, on the website and at the Pangari in Church. Any questions, please call Katerina Leftheris 908-359-4620. March/April 2011 Page 14 Greek Orthodox Youth Association - G. O. Y. A. The St. George GOYA has been busy at work preparing for multiple events coming up! In February the Goyans began their weekly practices for the annual Sights and Sounds competition in Westfield. Even with the tremendous amount of snow and cancellations the Piscataway GOYA still managed to put on a fantastic showcase of talents! The church Sights and Sounds event, which was held on February 20, was one of the best yet. Whether it was the comical play, impressive dance, or wonderful individual performances, the afternoon was filled with laughs and applause. On March 5th, the GOYA rode to Westfield for the Sights and Sounds competition. The Piscataway GOYA did a fantastic job representing our community, and we are very proud of all of our participants! On February 4th, the GOYA attended the Valentine s Day dance in Clifton. This was the final dance of the year and was a great way to catch up with friends from all the Greek Orthodox communities. On January 29, the St. George girls volleyball and senior boys basketball team met in Holmdel for the annual play offs. The girls had an undefeated season when entering the competition and the boys were one of the top teams in the league. The girls finished off the season at playoffs as number 1, this being the second year they are undefeated. Great job girls! The boys finished 3 rd in the league with a very close game. We re proud of all the participants! On March 6th we had our monthly meeting. At this meeting we discussed the outcomes of all the Sights and Sounds awards, as well as the athletic achievements for the season. We also asked that for all those wishing to participate in Junior Olympics to sign up. Junior Olympics will be held Memorial Day weekend. Lastly, the GOYA would like to remind everybody of our annual Lamb Raffle! The drawing will be on April 17th, and tickets will be sold prior to this date. PISCATAWAY, NEW JERSEY 38 th Annual Greek Festival! Our 38 th Annual Festival will be held on May 13 th, 14 th and 15 th. As always, this is the first weekend following Mother s Day. The Festival Committee will be meeting on Thursdays during the months of February, March, April and May. Meetings will be held from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, with the exception of Holy Week. We welcome all parishioners who are interested in supporting this year s festival to attend the meetings. This year we need help to fill a number of outstanding department positions. Currently, we are looking to identify a department chairperson for Treasury. If you are interested, please do not hesitate to contact the chairperson, John Lyssikatos, 908.359.2955. No help will ever be turned away. We are always open to suggestions and ideas. Please do not hesitate to share them with the Festival Committee. As always we look to make a few changes with this year s Festival, in an attempt to better serve our guests and provide a successful Festival. This year our goal is to improve the communication with Piscataway Township, in an effort to eliminate the challenges we faced with advertising prior to the 2010 Festival, and with parking during the three day event. Significant strides have been made in this area over the past 6 months. We will have a calendar outlining all the cooking dates for the kitchen and the bakery. We will be baking and cooking in February, March, April, and May. As always, we again are seeking everyone s help. The more people who get involved, the easier the activities, and the more fun we will have. We cannot depend on the same people year-in and year-out. 2011 ANNUAL FESTIVAL The Festival is a vital fundraiser for our church. Please show your Stewardship by helping at this year s Festival. It only takes a few hours a day of everyone s time in order to make a difference. This is a great event to get involved, gather with your fellow church members, and show our famous Greek hospitality. We will have Festival sign-ups after church on Sundays in March and April. We look forward to seeing everyone at this year s festival!
