SPYRIDON HELLENIC ORTHODOX CHURCH 12307 S. RIDGELAND AVE. PALOS HEIGHTS, IL 60463 WWW. SAINT- SPYRIDON.ORG Hymn of Note Peace be with you. These were the first words by which Jesus greeted His disciples following the resurrection. This same greeting is repeatedly given to all of us through the celebrant of the Divine Liturgy, to which we bow our heads and respond And with your spirit. By these words the risen Christ, having abolished death and all that separated mankind from God, anticipates the age of peace and reconciliation within our communities, our families, even our very self. Of course, twenty centuries later, this peace is still elusive and a topic of reflection for many generations. The 6 th Eothinon hymn of our Hymn of Note series will give us the opportunity to continue that reflection. O Christ you are truly peace for men of God; giving your peace to the Disciples after the Resurrection, you showed them to be full of fear, for they thought they saw a spirit; but you dispelled the tumult of their souls by showing your hands and feet; but, as they still doubted, by taking nourishment and reminding them of your teachings you opened their minds to understand the Scriptures; you assured them of the Father s promise, and blessing them you went away to heaven. And so with them we worship you. Lord, glory to you! Greek Independence Day Luncheon Sunday, March 31st, 2013 Following the Divine Liturgy

Altar Boys John Angelos... Athletics And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. The peace that Christ ushered in the world is based on the reconciliation accomplished in Himself. As a result of the Fall of Adam and Eve, man broke away from his Creator. Having transgressed the single commandment in the Garden of Eden, Adam proved too selfish to admit his own mistake and blamed Eve and ultimately God for his predicament. Refusing to take responsibility for his error, Adam chose the road of mistrust, pride, and selfishness, leading to physical death which is the separation of body and soul, and the separation between God and man which is spiritual death. In His divine plan of salvation, Jesus Christ became the incarnation of peace for in His person the divine and human natures were reconciled and united. On the Cross He reconciled men to one another by showing us the power of forgiveness. By His sacrifice He reconciled man to God showing us the measure of His love. By His resurrection, He restored the hope of mankind by showing that death in Christ is a temporary sleep as we await the resurrection of all unto life eternal. In the person of Jesus Christ, all divisions brought about by sin are abolished. There is no longer Jew or Gentile, male or female, slave or free, all are one in Jesus Christ. We are all part of His body and thus we are all brothers and sisters in Christ. In the person of Jesus Christ we see the Source of our peace by which all that separates us from another is indeed diminished. In practice, when we pray to Jesus, He becomes realized to us. He becomes our comfort, our guide, our hope that as a loving God He is aware of everything in our daily lives. As the incarnate and crucified Christ, He is not only aware of our experiences but He relates and is compassionate. An active prayer life can help us realize the presence of God in all things as a loving Father. As we commit to fasting and charity, we in turn can become more compassionate and aware of the experiences of others. We can be the instruments of God s loving grace, reminding people of the reality we have experienced in the person of Jesus Christ. As we realize the forgiveness and mercy we have received in Jesus, our relationships with each other and within ourselves will ultimately be restored. World peace will never be accomplished by a treaty or by the laws of men. Peace begins with Christ Who accomplished peace and reconciliation in Himself. A life of communion with Christ through the Church s sacramental life is the key to understanding how peace is first to be established in us and through us to all the world. With this understanding, may the greeting Peace be with you be realized in all of you so that the coming days of Great and Holy Lent may be filled with holiness and all blessings from above. Amen. Great Lent FASTING DURING GREAT LENT Just as there are times for feasting, there are also times set aside for fasting. During the period of Great Lent certain foods are prohibited. These are meat (including poultry), dairy products, fish, olive oil and wine. Fruits, vegetables, grains and shellfish are permitted during the fast. Of course, the Orthodox Church never reduces the practice of fasting to a legalistic observance of dietary rules. Fasting, that is not accompanied by intensified prayer and acts of charity, inevitably becomes a source of pride. The Church also recognizes that not everyone can fast to the same degree, and assumes that individual Christians will observe the fast prescribed for them by their spiritual fathers. The following are guidelines for the Lenten Fast: From Clean Monday (March 18th) through the Friday before Lazarus Saturday (April 27 th ), meat, fish, dairy products, olive oil and wine are not permitted. Olive oil and wine are permitted on weekends. On the feasts of Annunciation and Palm Sunday, fish, wine and oil are permitted. Great and Holy Week, (April 28 th May 4 th ) meat, fish, dairy products, olive oil and wine are not permitted. LENTEN MEALS During Great Lent, Lenten Meals will be hosted by the different Parish organizations of our community. Each dinner is pot-luck and always delicious. We ask that the members of each organization bring a lenten dish for their assigned day. The Lenten Meals will be held every Wednesday of Great Lent after the Presanctified Liturgy. All free will donations will benefit our Fund for the Needy. The Lenten Meal schedule is as follows: Monday, March 18th P:hiloptochos Wednesday, March 20th GOYA & Jr GOYA Wednesday, March 27th Bible Study Groups and Kentro of Orthodox Martyria Wednesday, April 3rd P.T.A.
