We particularly congratulate Anastasia Borak, whose creation of 7 dolls representing the 7 continents, was nominated for selection in the 2006 HSC Major Works Exhibition, DesignTech, at the Powerhouse Museum. We also congratulate all students in Design and Technology, Drama, Extension 2 English, Greek Language, Textiles and Design and Visual Arts who produced outstanding major works for their HSC courses. Congratulations, Year 12! Anastasia s Wrapped! An interview with Anastasia about her Major Work What inspired you to create your Major Work for Design and Technology? My Major Design Project changed a number of times throughout the first few weeks of Year 12. I was inspired to do this Major Work after attending a Wrapertoire workshop. I loved my final product at the end of the workshop and the techniques used to make it. Wrapertoire is a fabric hardener that I used to make the dolls. What does the name World Wrap mean? The theme of the 7 continents is represented through World. The fabric hardener I used was Wrapertoire, therefore the word, Wrap. I believe these are the two main aspects of my Major Design Project. What were some of the challenges you faced in completing your Major Work? Some challenges I faced were finding the correct colour scheme and discovering a new creative manner for each doll in order to be individual; the race against time (balancing D&T with my other subjects) and learning and completing a variety of textile techniques that would distinguish my work from others How did it feel to finish your work? Relief! I got home and felt really empty. Design and Technology requires complete dedication by students (and teachers!) What were you thinking when the HSC Markers were assessing your work? I really didn t think I d go so far as to be nominated. I knew I wouldn t perform poorly but I was afraid the Markers might not like my work, or it wouldn t be what they were looking for. I kept going through my portfolio hoping I didn t forget anything. How does it feel to be nominated for the DesignTech Exhibition? Exciting! It feels like all my hard work, headaches and late nights have finally paid off. I m really happy to have made it this far.

An Interview with Year 12 Design & Technology Students Roslyn Sklavenitis, Theo Hatzi, Michael Mihailou, John Houtris, John Kapos, Christine Mertzanakis,George Sereti, Chris Harsudas and Tom Kolotouris share the challenges faced in completing a Major Design Project. What inspired you to create your Major Work for Design and Technology? Roslyn: I loved making lamps in Year 9 and I wanted to continue. Also, the Bauhaus School of Design (which is a German Design School) inspired me because of the geometric shapes and use of primary colours. Theo: I was inspired by my Year 11 work. Michael: My young cousins inspired me to create my lamps. I have three young cousins under the age of 2. John: The Greek culture and my family inspired me to create my Major Design Project. Tom: The need for storage space in my bedroom! Chris: Working with Microsoft Powerpoint. It was interesting to learn new techniques and knowing my design would benefit the school also inspired me. John: I have always had a strong passion for architecture and intend studyng architecture in the future. Christine: A passion for design and fashion and the glitz and glamour of the races were my main inspiration. I wanted to create a series of hats with meaning so I chose the four seasons. George: I have always had a strong passion for innovative design. By designing men s accessories, I was hoping to showcase my creative flair. Mr. Zogopoulos originally sparked the idea of a reversible tie. I wanted to achieve fantastic marks in the HSC. What were some of the challenges you faced in completing your Major Work? Roslyn: Some of the challenges included finding suitable material to use for the lamp design and a frame that would aid the design rather than overpower it. Theo: Making sure there were no mistakes and that the material didn t break or crack. Michael: There were endless problems, mainly to do with my time management. My advice for anyone doing D&T is to manage your time well. John: The portfolio size and the time frame left in the finishing stages. Tom: Cutting the pieces of wood to construct the unit so they would fit the exact measurements as required for the location. I used clear and white Perspex instead of glass, custom wood and stainless steel. Chris: Getting motivated because most of the design was in front of a computer! John: Time! Time is crucial- as I started rather late, I had limited time to complete my project which was a great challenge. Christine: Time and locating an existing designer. It was actually quite difficult trying to get in contact with one. George: Learning the skill of sewing. I had never used sewing tools and machinery but now I can successfully sew a tie together. Another challenge was time. It took me about a month to think of an idea so I was 4 weeks behind to begin with. I was also stressing about putting the last minute touches to my portfolio. How did it feel to finish your work? Roslyn: It was a great relief to finish the Major Work- it was like the weight of the world was lifted off my shoulders! Theo: Happy it was all over! Michael: Fantastic! I felt a great sense of achievement when I finally finished and handed my portfolio in for the last time. John: I felt VERY relieved to be able to hand in my work and not be able to alter anything anymore. Tom: It felt good to finish something you started, especially as I had a need for it. I feel excited to get it back and use it for storage. Chris: Relieved and stress-free. It felt good knowing I didn t have to worry about my portfolio. John: I felt so relieved. After an extremely stressful year it felt as though a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders. Christine: I felt so relieved, I didn t have to stay up all night worrying about my portfolio. George: It felt great knowing that you put a lot of hard work into the project and then at the end you could sit back and see what a fantastic job you did. What were you thinking when the HSC Markers were assessing your work? Roslyn: I was so nervous I didn t want to walk past the room. I was also relieved to know that it was finally over. Theo: Was still happy that it was all over! Michael: I was very nervous. I kept trying to peek into the room with the displays to get an idea of what they thought of my project. John: I thanked God it was over. Nothing more to do and nothing more to think about for the D&T project! Tom: I was thinking they would appreciate the research, thought and development of my concept and they might compliment my use of Perspex. Chris: The only thing running through my mind was what mark I was going to get! John: I was hoping they d be impressed. Christine: Me too. I was hoping they d be impressed with my hats and portfolio. George: I wasn t thinking much at all. I was hoping that project would impress the markers and because I completed every section of the project to the best of my ability, I felt confident that I would achieve a good mark.
