1 The Feast of the Presentation of our Lord and God and Savior, Jesus Christ. Ἡ ἑορτὴ τῆς Ὑπαπαντῆς τοῦ Κυρίου καὶ Θεοῦ καὶ Σωτῆρος ἡµῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ February 2 The Feast of the Meeting of our Lord in the Temple was celebrated from earliest times but the solemn celebration of this day was established in the year 544 A.D. during the reign of Emperor Justinian. The fortieth day after His birth, the All-Holy Virgin brought her Divine Son into the Temple of Jerusalem, in accordance with the Law, to dedicate Him to God and to purify herself. Consecrate to me every first-born that opens the womb among the Israelites both of man and beast, for it belongs to me (Exodus 13:2). Tell the Israelites: when a woman has conceived and gives birth to a boy, she shall be unclean for seven days, with the same uncleanness as at her menstrual period. On the eighth day, the flesh of the boy s foreskin shall be circumcised, and then she shall spend thirty-three days more in becoming purified of her blood; she shall not touch anything sacred nor enter the sanctuary till the days of her purification are fulfilled. If she gives birth to a girl, for fourteen days she shall be as unclean as at her menstruation, after which she shall spend sixty-six days in becoming purified of her blood. When the days of her purification for a son or for a daughter are fulfilled, she shall bring to the priest at the entrance of the meeting tent a yearling lamb for a holocaust and a pigeon or a turtledove for a sin offering. The priest shall offer them up before the Lord to make atonement for her, and thus she will be clean again after her flow of blood. Such is the law for the woman who gives birth to a boy or a girl child (Leviticus 12:2-7). Even though neither the one nor the other was necessary, nevertheless the Lawgiver did not, in any way, want to transgress His own Law ςηιψη He had given through Moses, His servant and prophet. At that time, the high-priest Zaccharias, the father of John the Forerunner, was on duty in the Temple, serving as a priest before God in the order of his division Luke 1:8. Zaccharias placed the Virgin, not in the temple area reserved for women but rather in the area reserved for virgins. On this occasion, two unusual persons appeared in the Temple: the Elder Symeon and Anna, the daughter of Phanuel. The righteous Symeon took the Messiah in his arms and said: Now You may let Your servant go in peace, Master,according to Your word, for my eyes have seen Your salvation (Luke 2: 29-30). Symeon further spoke the following words about the Christ-child: Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel (Luke 2:34). Then Anna, who from her youth served God in the Temple ιν fasting and prayer, recognized the Messiah and glorified God and proclaimed to the inhabitants of Jerusalem about the coming of the long-awaited One. The Pharisees present in the Temple, who having seen and heard all, became angry with Zacharias because he placed the Virgin Mary in the area reserved for virgins and reported this to King Herod. Convinced that this is the new king about whom the Magi from the east spoke, Herod immediately sent his soldiers to kill Jesus. In the meantime the Holy Family had already left the city and set out for Egypt under the guidance of an angel of God. 1

Κυρίῳ πᾶν διανοῖγον µήτραν τὰ ἀρσενικά, καὶ of man and the first-born of cattle. And when the days of her purification are fulfilled, whether for a son or a daughter, she shall bring to the priest a lamb of the first year as a burnt offering, and a young pigeon or a turtledove as a sin offering, to the door of the tabernacle of meeting. And if she is not able to bring a lamb, then she may bring two turtledoves or two young pigeons, one as a burnt offering and the other as a sin offering. So the priest shall make atonement for her, and she will be clean. For they are wholly given to Me from among the children of Israel; I have taken them for Myself instead of all who open the womb, the firstborn of all the children of Israel. I have taken them for myself, on the day that I struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt I sanctified them to Myself, says the Lord Most High, the Holy One of Israel. ἡµέραι τῆς καθάρσεως. In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Ἐγένετο τοῦ ἔτους, οὗ ἀπέθανεν Ὀζίας ὁ Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, Βασιλεύς, εἶδον τὸν Κύριον καθήµενον ἐπὶ and the train of His robe filled the temple. θρόνου ὑψηλοῦ καὶ ἐπηρµένου, καὶ πλήρης ὁ Above it stood Seraphim; each one had six οἶκος τῆς δόξης αὐτοῦ. Καὶ Σεραφίµ wings: with two he covered his face, with two εἱστήκεισαν κύκλῳ αὐτοῦ, ἓξ πτέρυγες τῷ ἑνὶ he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And καὶ ἓξ πτέρυγες τῷ ἑνί, καὶ ταῖς µὲν δυσὶ one cried to another and said: Holy, holy, κατεκάλυπτον τὰ πρόσωπα αὐτῶν, ταῖς δὲ holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is δυσὶ κατεκάλυπτον τοὺς πόδας, καὶ ταῖς δυσὶν full of His glory! And the posts of the door ἐπέταντο. Καὶ ἐκέκραγεν ἕτερος πρὸς τὸν were shaken by the voice of him who cried ἕτερον καὶ ἔλεγον Ἅγιος, Ἅγιος, Ἅγιος out, and the house was filled with smoke. 6 and your sin purged. Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us? Then I said, Here am I! Send me. And He said, Go, and tell this people: Keep on hearing, but do not understand; keep on seeing, but do not perceive. Make the heart of this people dull, and their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and return and be healed. Then I said, Lord, how long? And He answered: Until the cities are laid waste and without inhabitant, the houses are without a man, the land is utterly desolate, the Lord has removed men far away, and the forsaken places are many in the midst of the land. ὃν τῇ λαβίδι ἔλαβεν ἀπὸ τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου. Καὶ ἥψατο τοῦ στόµατός µου, καὶ εἶπεν Ἰδού, ἥψατο τοῦτο τῶν χειλέων σου καὶ ἀφελεῖ τὰς ἀνοµίας σου, καὶ τὰς ἁµαρτίας σου περικαθαριεῖ. Καὶ ἤκουσα τῆς φωνῆς Κυρίου λέγοντος Τίνα ἀποστείλω; καὶ τὶς πορεύσεται πρὸς τὸν λαὸν τοῦτον; καὶ εἶπον Ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ εἰµι, ἀπόστειλόν µε. Καὶ εἶπε Πορεύθητι, καὶ εἰπὲ τῷ λαῷ τούτῳ Ἀκοῇ ἀκούσετε, καὶ οὐ µὴ συνῆτε, καὶ βλέποντες βλέψετε, καὶ οὐ µὴ ἴδητε.
