Fourth Issue, 2009 Autumn ELEVATION OF THE HOLY CROSS (SEPT. 14 TH ) THE LURE OF THE EASY WAY Saint John 19: 6-11, 13-20, 25-28, 30 Very Rev. Timothy G. Bakakos Each year on September 14 th, our Holy Orthodox Church sets aside this day and celebrates and commemorates the ultimate symbol of our Christian Religion with the Feast Day of the Elevation of the Precious Cross of Jesus Christ. And on this major Feast Day, in solemn procession during the Divine Liturgy we walked this Symbol, the Cross, around the Church to commemorate and accentuate the importance of the Holy Cross and it s reason to refresh our memories of it s significance. The Cross has acquired a special place in the Christian faith and worship. Since Jesus Christ suffered upon it, the Cross for us Orthodox Christians is a symbol of His sacrifice and of His Resurrection, not only of the Lord s, but also of ours as well, in the life to come. This Feast Day which we celebrate on September 14 th is in reverence of the Holy Cross, and is commemorated each year on this date ever since it s recovery from the Persians by the Byzantine Emperor Heracleos. Upon its recovery, the Holy Cross of Jesus Christ was brought to the Church of the Holy Resurrection, and venerated by all the faithful of Jerusalem. To this very day, this tradition still is in practice with the priest carrying a tray with the Holy Cross on it, surrounded by vasiliko, or sweet basil, the very same plant which Saint Helen found where she discovered the Cross years before. We are all very familiar with the words of Jesus when He said, If any man wants to follow me, let him deny himself, pick up his cross, and follow me. For whoever desires to save his own life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for me and for the Gospel, will save it. And, along those lines, I would like to write in my message to you about what we can call the lure of the easy way. There was a point in the ministry of Jesus that one day He was entering the town of Caesarea with disciples. Their ministry to this point had been a stunning success. Crowds pressed in on them everywhere they went. People eagerly reached out to touch this attractive, young, charismatic teacher from Nazareth. And even the disciples themselves were caught up in the excitement of it all. Jesus sensing this, decided to question them, so He asked them, who do you say that I am, and Simon Peter answered enthusiastically, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. It was one of the most dramatic moments in the disciples pilgrimage with Jesus thus far. But then, Jesus changed suddenly the subject. He began to tell them not to pay attention to adulation today, because those same crowds that they see today and are impressed by, would soon turn against Him, that He would be crucified, and that on the third day, He would be raised from the dead. Listening to Jesus, the disciples did not know what to make of all this. So, Simon Peter took Jesus aside: Forbid it Lord that these things should happen to you. Jesus response to Simon Peter is as harsh as any words that we find in the New Testament: He said, Get behind me Satan! You are not on the side of God, but of man. The harsh words that Jesus said to Simon Peter and calling him Satan was because Jesus thought back to His experience in the wilderness immediately after His baptism by Saint

Elevation of the Cross Continued from page 1 John prior to the start of His ministry. It was there that Satan revealed to Jesus how to figuratively acquire the luxuries of life in three easy steps.. turn stones to bread.. leap off the pinnacle of the temple..and bow down and worship Satan. That s all there was to it, according to Satan. For us today, we don t need to see Satan dressed as a redcaped figure with a pitch-fork, but rather, he today can be dressed in a $ business suit and offering, in a glib and polished tongue instant success, instant glamour, and instant gratification. We can see Satan almost anywhere today. And Jesus encountered him this time in Simon Peter when Peter says, Forbid it Lord, that You should have to suffer and die. It is in this passage from the Gospel of Saint John on this Feast Day on September 14 th that we see Jesus resisting the lure of the easy way. Listen to these words again, If any man would be My disciple, let him deny himself, take up his Cross, and follow Me. Some of us today make that mistake of following the easy way. We see it in our family life. Homes are disintegrating because a father or a mother decides one day that enough is enough and simply walks out. We also see it in our work. For many of us, we can certainly remember the 60 s and 70 s, the years of revolution, when young people dreaded taking their place in the work force and in the business world. But all that has changed! Today, many young people would sell their soul to be junior vice president of the Chase Manhattan Bank, and according to recent news reports, many of them have. Recently a national magazine asked on it s cover, Whatever Happened To Ethics?. The answer is, We are working harder, but we are still seeking the easy way. And sadly, we can also see how the desire to follow the easy way has spilled into our Churches as well. One day, one parishioner said to another, say, I heard that you bought a new car. How did you ever afford it? The other parishioner replied, simple, I just canceled my Church pledge! The first one said, gee, I wish that I could buy a new car for that little. For many of us, we are the disciples of the easy way, even though as Orthodox Christians, we know two important truths. The first truth is that the path to personal success is that of self-denial. A Chicago Tribune Columnist wrote a while back of visiting the Washington Monument. As he and his party approached the monument, he heard a guide announcing loudly that there would be a two-hour wait to ride the elevator to the top of the monument. However, with a smile on his face, the guide then said, there is no waiting to go to the top if you are willing to take the stairs. What was the point? Well, there is no easy way for some things. Successful people know that there is no limit to what a healthy, reasonably intelligent person in this society can accomplish IF he or she is willing to climb the stairs. The opportunity is there for anyone willing to pay the price. But success in life requires a willingness to resist the lure of the easy way. A sound body requires that we exercise, eat the right foods, and conquer bad habits. A sound mind requires that we read, that we observe, that we continually learn. A sound marriage requires that each partner goes into it with the understanding that marriage is not a 50/50 proposition, but a 100% one in which both parties give the 100%. A sound family means that we will take the time to be sensitive to the needs of our children, that we provide not only for their physical needs, but also, to their emotional and spiritual needs as well. Such goals require sacrifice.they require perseverance.they require determination. But everyone of us knows that the path to personal success is the path of self-denial. That is the message of the Holy Cross and how it should apply to our lives. And secondly, we also know that self-denial is essential to the salvation of the world. Today, more than ever before, our world faces some tremendous challenges. Is there anyone of us, however, who cares enough to act? Some cynic has said, when the going gets tough, everyone leaves. That is what happened to Jesus, wasn t it? As the way got harder, the numbers of those who followed dwindled until finally, He died alone on the Cross: and it is that Cross that is proudly taken out of the Holy Altar and led in solemn procession on this holy day, September 14th. Yet, if He had been unwilling to lay down His life, the world would never have known the love of the Father. If those early disciples had not picked up Jesus cross and followed after Him, we still would not know about that love. And, if you and I do not pick up the cross in our time, and make those hard choices, and assume those difficult responsibilities our children s Assumption-Chicago The Assumption Newsletter Fourth Edition 2009 Page 2

Elevation of the Cross Continued from page 2 children will not know the old, old story of Jesus and His love for us. As we continue on with our life s situations, we need to ask ourselves, have we examined our life thus far? Are we looking to change? Have we even realized yet that we need to change?. The Holy Cross is the symbol for us to assure us that there IS life beyond the grave and that Jesus died and resurrected to show us that He awaits each of us in Heaven with our Father. Life IS about the Cross the Cross IS our life and the Cross IS the way to salvation. So, my dear brothers and sisters, when it comes to taking up the cross of self-denial, we need to understand our humanity and the call of our Lord. If we don t care what happens to this world, who will? If we don t feed the hungry, who will? If we don t shelter the homeless, who will? If we don t tell the world about Jesus Christ, who will? So, how about you? The road to personal success is the road of self-denial. Any worthwhile self-help book will tell you that! Self-denial, however, is also essential to the salvation of the world. So as we observe the Feast Day of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on September 14 th, let us look at the Cross and give thanks to the One Who gave us our life. How shall we thank Him? With fasting? We might. With our Church attendance and our prayers and making the sign of the cross? That might be helpful too! But Jesus so beautifully gives us the answer when He says, If anyone should be my disciple, let him deny himself, take up his Cross, and follow me. That is His call to your life and mine today. Can He count on you? Will you join the company of the committed? Will you take up your cross today? I hope and pray that your answer to all those questions is yes. But the most appropriate response is to take responsibility for your lives, and to make a renewed commitment to live a Christ-like life as God grants us the ability. God s love for us is shown through the Cross in which He gave us His Son. And our response is through that same Cross, the Cross which is our only hope and our only salvation for life everlasting. + A M E N Parish Council President President s Report By James Lakerdas This time of year seems to provide us an opportunity to look back. For many it is a chance to reminisce over summer vacations and visits with family and friends. Here at Assumption, we look back at the exciting few weeks we just had. Recently our Community hosted thousands of individuals who came to celebrate The Holy Dormition of The Theotokos. With the help of many volunteers, individuals were able to worship in dignity and bask in the beauty of our Church. Thank you to all the volunteers who assisted. A special thanks to our Philoptochos, who hosted a Luncheon following service, for all the visitors. It was lovely! Once again we held our Labor Day festival. This event requires months of planning and hours of intense labor. Often the hard work falls on some of the same individuals every year. This year our Festival was chaired by Christina Arvanites, and Tina Sarantos. I would like to commend them and their team of volunteers for organizing what looks to be a record breaking festival. Looking back we are grateful for the many individuals who donate their time, talents, and treasury, to our Community. continued on page 9 Assumption-Chicago The Assumption Newsletter Fourth Edition 2009 Page 3

Youth Ministry... By Father Athanasios Pieri It is very interesting how the month of August is dedicated to the Panagia because it is beginning with the Paraclesis as a preparation for Her feast of the Dormition, then we celebrate the nine days after Her falling asleep (August 23rd) and we conclude on the 31st of August with the finding of the Holy Sash of the Theotokos. As we see more than half the days in the month are dedicated to Panagia and for that reason the Fathers call the month of August the month of Panagia. The month of August is the last month according the Ecclesiastical Calendar. Also, it is very interesting how in September our Church celebrates the birth of the Panagia during the first month of the Ecclesiastical Calendar. There are many people who would say there is a meaning behind this and of course we see how the Panagia is becoming a tool for us like a ladder, the first and the last step of the ladder to take us closer to Her only begotten Son. Something else that is interesting is that the Panagia was born on the eighth of September. As we know the number seven symbolize the completion but according to the Holy Fathers the number eight symbolizes eternity. The truth is that the Panagia gave birth to the one who is going to give us the eternity. One of the Saints who became worthy to talk to the Panagia was Saint Gregory Palamas. Saint Gregory said the death of the venerable is honorable and the memory of the righteous accompanied with the lamentation how much more will the memory of the Saint of the Saints, (Panagia), that come all the holiness to the holy people. In this way we celebrate on Her feast that is little bit less than the angels but the Panagia passes the angels and archangels that she became worthy to sit on the right hand of our Lord Jesus Christ. Her falling asleep became life giving and a joyful feast that Panagia every year brings to our memory the wonders of the Theometor (God mother) but also, the memory of the paradox gathering of the Holy Disciples and Apostles from every part of the earth to give the appropriate respect for Her funeral. The mother of God is a place of all the gifts and the completion of all the goods because the Panagia became worthy to receive the Grace of the Holy Spirit. As she became worthy to accept the whole Divinity in Her womb she also became worthy to be with Her Son in the Heavenly Kingdom. As we enter the New Ecclesiastical Year let us remember to honor Her birth on September 8th and ask Her to intercede for us. Especially the ladies must take the opportunity to present to the Theotokos every problem and concern that they have with their children as the most Holy Theotokos is a Mother for all of us the Christians, she would intercede for your children. There are many times that you are not able to talk to your children because of the influence they have from their friends and the society in which we live. Let us take the opportunity to speak through our prayers to our Mother the Panagia to guide us on how to talk to and advise the younger generation. Let us remember that our faith is alive; that we experience it every day and through the prayers of Panagia, and all the Saints, let us have a blessed and fruitful year. 9 . '.,,,.,,.,..,,,,,,,,,,.,,.,.... President s Report By James Lakerdas continued from page 3 This time of year also provides us with an opportunity to look forward. There is the start of the school year, sports schedules, and hectic days. For the Church it is a time to look ahead into the new Ecclesiastical Year. As we look forward we are thankful for this Parish and her people who have used their talents to glorify God. We look forward to an exciting Church School year, with both veterans and new staff. The St. Catherine's Restoration Committee is hard at work identifying what projects need to be tackled first. We are busy with initiating fund raising efforts to finance this project. We look forward with enthusiasm and anticipation to all the work ahead of us, and are thankful that we have dedicated individuals who will take on these tasks. Good things are coming! May the Lord bless us with the vision to see them and the wisdom to recognize them. Assumption-Chicago The Assumption Newsletter Fourth Edition 2009 Page 9

Stewardship... THE CHRISTIAN STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM Borrowed from Greek Orthodox Archdiocese I would like to take this opportunity to review the basic ideas of the Christian Stewardship program. The Christian teaching about Stewardship may seem to be a radical one. It is radical in the sense that it goes to the root of the management programs of life and its assets. In the world in which we live, the spirit of advertising always tempts us to please ourselves, to make life comfortable for ourselves as though to fulfill every selfish or personal desire were life's highest goal. The Bible, on the contrary, repeatedly reminds us that we live primarily to love and serve God and, that in serving Him, our own deepest needs are best met. The way one uses his or her time, talents and treasures, all of which come from God, reflects directly his or her commitment or his or her failure to comprehend (and accept as a rule of life) the principle of Christian Stewardship. For example, God has given us 24 hours in each day and no matter what we do, we cannot alter that fact. But, we can do much to use that 24 hours each day in the way that will enable us to promote God's will on earth or to hinder its realization tragically. We can give so much time to things which please us and not God, and indulge our every whim and fancy that we literally have no "extra time" to serve on this committee or that project worthy as it may be, when we are called upon to contribute some time. Or we can become so occupied using the varied talents God has given us in the pursuits that satisfy us and not God that when the invitation comes to use one or several of our time, talents or treasures in an obvious beneficial way, we may very honestly reply that we would like to give or serve or do the job but we cannot. My fellow parishioners, before we can be free to practice Stewardship in the way the Lord teaches, the question of where our basic loyalty lies must first be answered "does it lie with my personal enjoyment and my interests, or with God and his will?" When we instituted Stewardship, we talked of a goal where some day, through our motivations as good Stewards, we could eliminate the marketing or selling of our respon sibilities for our Church, our Parish Ministries and our programs. That is, we would reach a day of maturity where as truly believing Stewards we could support our annual financial requirements through Stewardship offering alone. You could help reach that goal and maintain our Ministries and Operating Budget 100%. This is an outstanding endeavor and only you could make it perfect. Christian Stewardship in the sense of giving of self is what the whole Gospel is about. The specific question, for example, of how many dollars or hours or talents you are going to give to your Church demands a prior question and answer. How much of yourself are you willing to dedicate to Christ? The answer to that question alone determines how much you give to the Church. We ask you to reappraise your ability to increase your Stewardship Commitment to a level, which is your response for God's gifts to you. When you consider your 2010 Christian Stewardship Commitment, we ask that you seriously consider: first, reviewing your level of commitment to an amount you feel is more responsive to God's gifts to you and second, if your current pledge is proportion ately responsive to your gifts, then we ask you to consider increasing in your 2010 commitment commensurate with God's blessings to you and your resources. How much should you give? Give no more, no less. Give only, as God has prospered you. Assumption-Chicago The Assumption Newsletter Fourth Edition 2009 Page 10
