Dennis Strouzas Nov. 6, th Sunday of Luke 3 rd Mode 9 th Morning Gospel St. Raphael of Brooklyn Did you know we have a saint who spent most of his life right in our backyard, in Brooklyn? Yesterday, we celebrated one of America s modern-day saints: St. Raphael Hawaweeny, Bishop of Brooklyn. St. Raphael was born in 1860, and after receiving theological degrees in Syria, Halki, and Russia, he was sent to Brooklyn in As a fierce and tireless servant of Christ s Gospel, his leadership blossomed most especially after being elevated to the episcopacy in He travelled extensively in America and founded churches (around 30) wherever he found a sufficient number of Orthodox faithful. Preaching, education, confession, sacraments, returning believers to the Orthodox fold who had joined other Christian groups because of a lack of Orthodox churches St. Raphael devoted himself to these kinds of activities in a spirit of humility and service to God and others. Let the spirit of Orthodox love spread among us, and let the spirit of hateful religious intolerance fall away Let our slogan, we the Christians of America, be love of the country and love of the religion. -St. Raphael, Bishop of Brooklyn

3 St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 1:11-19 BRETHREN, I would have you know that the gospel which was preached by me is not man's gospel. For I did not receive it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through a revelation of Jesus Christ. For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it; and I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers. But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and had called me through his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not confer with flesh and blood, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia; and again I returned to Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas, and remained with him fifteen days. But I saw none of the other apostles except James the Lord's brother. The Gospel according to Luke 8:41-56 At that time, there came to Jesus a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue; and falling at Jesus' feet he besought him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. As he went, the people pressed round him. And a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years and had spent all her living upon physicians and could not be healed by anyone, came up behind him, and touched the fringe of his garment; and immediately her flow of blood ceased. And Jesus said, "Who was it that touched me?" When all denied it, Peter said, "Master, the multitudes surround you and press upon you!" But Jesus said, "Some one touched me; for I perceive that power has gone forth from me." And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. And he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace." While he was still speaking, a man from the ruler's house came and said, "Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more." But Jesus on hearing this answered him, "Do not fear; only believe, and she shall be well." And when he came to the house, he permitted no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child. And all were weeping and bewailing her; but he said, "Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping." And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. But taking her by the hand he called, saying, "Child, arise." And her spirit returned, and she got up at once; and he directed that something should be given her to eat. And her parents were amazed; but he charged them to tell no one what had happened. Εν δὲ τῷ ὑπάγειν αὐτὸν οἱ ὄχλοι συνέπνιγον αὐτόν. καὶ γυνὴ οὖσα ἐν ῥύσει αἵματος ἀπὸ ἐτῶν δώδεκα, ἥτις ἰατροῖς προσαναλώσασα ὅλον τὸν βίον οὐκ ἴσχυσεν ὑπ οὐδενὸς θεραπευθῆναι, προσελθοῦσα ὄπισθεν ἥψατο τοῦ κρασπέδου τοῦ ἱματίου αὐτοῦ, καὶ παραχρῆμα ἔστη ἡ ῥύσις τοῦ αἵματος αὐτῆς. καὶ εἶπεν ὁ Ιησοῦς τίς ὁ ἁψάμενός μου; ἀρνουμένων δὲ πάντων εἶπεν ὁ Πέτρος καὶ οἱ σὺν αὐτῷ ἐπιστάτα, οἱ ὄχλοι συνέχουσί σε καὶ ἀποθλίβουσι, καὶ λέγεις τίς ὁ ἁψάμενός μου; ὁ δὲ Ιησοῦς εἶπεν ἥψατό μού τις ἐγὼ γὰρ ἔγνων δύναμιν ἐξελθοῦσαν ἀπ ἐμοῦ. ἰδοῦσα δὲ ἡ γυνὴ ὅτι οὐκ ἔλαθε, τρέμουσα ἦλθε καὶ προσπεσοῦσα αὐτῷ δι ἣν αἰτίαν ἥψατο αὐτοῦ ἀπήγγειλεν αὐτῷ ἐνώπιον παντὸς τοῦ λαοῦ, καὶ ὡς ἰάθη παραχρῆμα. ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῇ θάρσει, θύγατερ, ἡ πίστις σου σέσωκέ σε πορεύου εἰς εἰρήνην. Ετι αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος ἔρχεταί τις παρὰ τοῦ ἀρχισυναγώγου λέγων αὐτῷ ὅτι τέθνηκεν ἡ θυγάτηρ σου μὴ σκύλλε τὸν διδάσκαλον. ὁ δὲ Ιησοῦς ἀκούσας ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ λέγων μὴ φοβοῦ μόνον πίστευε, καὶ σωθήσεται. ἐλθὼν δὲ εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν οὐκ ἀφῆκεν εἰσελθεῖν οὐδένα εἰ μὴ Πέτρον καὶ Ιωάννην καὶ Ιάκωβον καὶ τὸν πατέρα τῆς παιδὸς καὶ τὴν μητέρα. ἔκλαιον δὲ πάντες καὶ ἐκόπτοντο αὐτήν. ὁ δὲ εἶπε μὴ κλαίετε οὐκ ἀπέθανεν, ἀλλὰ καθεύδει. καὶ κατεγέλων αὐτοῦ, εἰδότες ὅτι ἀπέθανεν. αὐτὸς δὲ ἐκβαλὼν ἔξω πάντας καὶ κρατήσας τῆς χειρὸς αὐτῆς ἐφώνησε λέγων ἡ παῖς, ἐγείρου. καὶ ἐπέστρεψε τὸ πνεῦμα αὐτῆς, καὶ ἀνέστη παραχρῆμα, καὶ διέταξεν αὐτῇ δοθῆναι φαγεῖν. καὶ ἐξέστησαν οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῖς. ὁ δὲ παρήγγειλεν αὐτοῖς μηδενὶ εἰπεῖν τὸ γεγονός.

4 Άγιος Παύλος ο Ομολογητής και Αρχιεπίσκοπος Κωνσταντινούπολης Βιογραφία Ο Άγιος Παύλος γεννήθηκε στη Θεσσαλονίκη, στις αρχές του 4ου αιώνα μ.χ. και υπήρξε γραμματέας του αγιοτάτου Πατριάρχη Κωνσταντινουπόλεως Αλεξάνδρου. Όταν απεβίωσε ο Αλέξανδρος, το 377 μ.χ., ο Παύλος εξελέγχθηκε Πατριάρχης. Ο αυτοκράτορας Κωνστάντιος, όταν το πληροφορήθηκε δυσανασχέτησε, μία και ήταν οπαδός της αίρεσης των Αρειανών. Όταν ο Κωνστάντιος επέστρεψε από την Αντιόχεια στην Κωνσταντινούπολη, απομάκρυνε από τον πατριαρχικό θρόνο τον Παύλο και ανακήρυξε αυθαίρετα Πατριάρχη, τον αρειανόφρονα Νικομήδειας Ευσέβιο. Τότε ο Άγιος Παύλος πήγε στη Ρώμη. Εκεί βρήκε τον Μέγα Αθανάσιο (βλέπε 18 Ιανουαρίου), τον οποίο είχε απομακρύνει από το Πατριαρχείο Αλεξανδρείας ο Κωνστάντιος. Πληροφορηθείς τα γεγονότα, ο αυτοκράτορας Κώνστας, έστειλε γράμμα στον αδελφό του τον Κωνστάντιο, διαμαρτυρόμενος για τη στάση του. Έτσι ο Παύλος και ο Αθανάσιος επανήλθαν στο αξίωμά τους. Δυστυχώς μετά από λίγο καιρό ο Κώνστας πέθανε. Έτσι ο Κωνστάντιος διέταξε, από την Αντιόχεια που ήταν, να απομακρύνουν τον Παύλο από τον Πατριαρχικό θρόνο. Μάλιστα τον εξόρισε στην Κουκουσό της Αρμενίας. Μία μέρα που τελούσε την Θεία Λειτουργία όρμησαν καταπάνω του Αρειανοί και τον έπνιξαν με το ίδιο του το ωμοφόριο. Έτσι ο Άγιος ετελείωσε και παρέδωσε την ψυχή του στον Κύριο. Α πολυτίκιον Ἦχος γ. Αὐτόμελον. 7 Philoptochos News SAVE THE DATE: SUNDAY DECEMBER 4, 2016 THE PHILOPTOCHOS ANNUAL FAMILY CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON will be held immediately after the Divine Liturgy right here in our beautiful Archangel Michael Church Complex. Please plan to join us for 'An Old-fashioned Christmas' luncheon, fellowship and Christmas cheer! The philanthropies of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, such as Balukli Hospital and nursing home, schools, shrines and parishes, are supported through this commitment. Additionally this month we will be sending $500 to St. Michaels home as part of our district commitment and $500 to The National Sisterhood of Presvyteres Fund as part of our national commitment. The National Sisterhood of Presvyteres was established in 1982 and is comprised of all Presvyteres of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. Philoptochos funds provide short-term support for clergy and/or their families in times of crisis. For the period October 8, 2014 through October 3, 2015, $43, (44 payments) were disbursed to clergy and/or their families. We also will be matching all funds collected by the Greek School and Sunday School Children to benefit Breast Cancer Research and Prevention in honor of National Philoptochos Make A Difference Day.
