Παράδειγμα: My brother almost never misses a day A) at C) to of school, but today he was sick and B) from D) by stayed home school. Η σωστή απάντηση είναι B. Θα μαυρίσετε τον αντίστοιχο κύκλο στο φύλλο απαντήσεων. Gap-Filling #1: Kermit s Song "It's not easy being green," sang Kermit the Frog. Whether or not you know who Kermit is, or why he said it was hard for him to be (81), you may know that taking care of (82) isn't a simple thing these days. Oh, it's easy enough to know what we (83) do, but to actually do it is something else. We know that throwing away everything we use is wrong, but recycling isn't always easy or even possible. Some people throw regular trash and rubbish in recycling bins (κάδους ανακύκλωσης). Sometimes what we put there (84) often enough. At other times, it's put in the truck with the other trash! (85) that make you angry? The truth is that we (86) a lot of things, like paper, metal, and glass. We cut down forests but don't replant them. We (87) holes in the earth to look for gold and silver but don't fill them back in. And we use much too much water! Do we really (88) wash our cars so often or stand under the shower for such a long time every morning? That s not the best (89) of the little water we have. You may think, "What can one (90) do to make things better?" Not much, maybe. But if everyone acted differently, Kermit might be singing another song. 81. 15 Gap-Filling #2: All Kinds of Pirates Even if you haven't seen the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies, you've heard of them. A man (91) Captain Jack Sparrow has all kinds of adventures. Some of them seem real, but others are clearly (92). There really were pirates like the ones in the movies, there's no doubt (93) that, and some of them were Greek (unlike Captain Sparrow, (94) English). And there are real pirates today, too. Maybe you haven't heard about them, but especially off the east coast of Africa, modern pirates have (95) modern (96). The oceans are still very big, and they don't really belong to (97), so there are no "policemen" waiting on the street corner to stop pirates from stealing. There are no street corners either, of course, at least not out in the deep, blue sea. Would you like to become a pirate someday? Perhaps you already are one. Or maybe one of your older brothers and sisters (98). We use the word "pirates" for people who take music and movies from the Internet without (99) them. It's a big problem for the actors and musicians who play in the films and sing the songs. They can't be expected to work for free, can they? Aren't the people who sell CDs and DVDs in the street (100), too? Yes, and the policeman on the street corner pays no attention to them! 91. A) who C) who name B) call D) named 92. A) no real C) didn t happen B) unreal D) not happened 93. A) for C) about B) to D) at 94. A) who was C) that is B) which was D) whose 95. A) to take C) brought B) attack D) attacked 96. Reading # 1: A Visit from the Zoo I will never forget the day during Easter vacation when I went by myself to visit the new zoo in our neighborhood. First, as I approached the ticket office, I saw that there was no one there to sell me a ticket. I waited and waited until I noticed that the gate was open, so I decided to just walk in, thinking it was my lucky day. In fact it was, but not for the reason I thought. What an unforgettable sight! Believe it or not, it was more surprising than seeing the strange animals I had been told were in the cages of that zoo. Oh, yes, there were plenty of cages, but most of them were empty and the guards were running around and shouting, They re gone! They re gone! At first I was frightened and when I realized what was happening, I knew I wouldn t spend my day the way I had planned. Before I had time to think about anything else, I was told to leave the zoo, so I crossed the street and began walking home feeling confused. When I got home, there was no one there, but I always enjoyed being by myself during vacations because I could do whatever I wanted without my parents complaining, Nancy, stop doing that! whenever I was doing something fun. I wondered what I should do for fun now, but I just couldn t think clearly, because my mind kept returning to the poor, lost animals. I opened the door to my room and realized that it was very cold in there. I immediately closed the window I had left open by mistake before I left the house. Then, I felt even more frightened when I thought that a thief could have come into the house. But that isn t likely! I thought and turned on the TV for company. To my surprise, there was a special report on TV about the zoo. I listened to a woman telling a story about a zebra that she had found in her garage, and I saw the zebra back in its cage. Next, there was a man telling a story about an elephant eating the grass in his yard, and I saw the elephant back in its cage, too. Three monkeys were returned to their cages when they were found in neighborhood trees. I also saw my neighbor on TV and listened to his story about two baby camels that he had found in his garden eating his vegetables. They said that all the missing animals had been found and returned to the zoo. I stopped listening when a book suddenly fell from my bookcase to the floor, and I jumped out of my chair looking behind me. It must be a thief! I thought. But it wasn t. I couldn t believe my eyes. A small animal was jumping around in my room! Oh, no! I shouted. Oh, yes! There was a baby kangaroo in MY ROOM! Of course, it had to be one of the zoo animals. It jumped twice and stood at my feet looking into my eyes. What was it thinking? Was it hungry? What does a kangaroo eat? I ran into the kitchen and brought back a bowl of milk. But it just looked at me and wouldn t drink it. 16

17 When I returned again with some bread, I saw the baby kangaroo eating the leaves of a plant in my room. When I called, Hey, kangaroo! it jumped towards me and I picked it up. I ll call you Kanga, I said. Kanga was so cute and made me so happy that I decided to keep her forever. As I held my cute Kanga in my arms, I heard another special report on TV. They were saying that there was one zoo animal that was unhappy and wouldn t eat or jump or even stand up. It just sat sadly in a corner of its cage. I heard the guard say that it was a mother kangaroo that was missing her baby I could see that the pouch (σάκος/ μάρσιπος) on her stomach was empty and that a tear was dropping from her eye. Could Kanga be her baby? I suddenly became sad myself, but I knew what I had to do. I put Kanga in a big bag and took her back to the zoo. I was allowed to put her back in her cage by myself, and I kissed her goodbye. Her mother jumped up and Kanga jumped into her pouch. When the mother kangaroo began to jump with Kanga in her pouch, I began to smile because I knew at that moment that it really had been my lucky day Why is this story called A Visit from the Zoo? A) Because Nancy visited the zoo in her neighborhood. B) Because Kanga visited Nancy s house. C) Because of Nancy s visit to the zoo, Kanga was returned. D) Because all the visitors had to leave the zoo that day Why couldn t Nancy think clearly in line 16? A) She was still confused about what had happened at the zoo. 18 Reading #2: Only You What is used nearly every day by nearly every person on Earth but can only be used if it is carefully controlled? If you travel anywhere, if you eat anything that has been cooked or baked, if it s cold outside but you re sitting comfortably in a warm room by now you have guessed that we re talking about fire. Try to think of life without it! People control fire so well that you don t even see many fires these days. You don t see the fire inside your car, the one that burns the gas (petrol) to make it go. You don t see the fire that makes your house warm, unless you heat your house with wood. Most of the fires that you see around you are probably started by people to burn the leaves of a certain plant. They light little fires, then breathe in the smoke! What a crazy idea! Fire comes in many colors. Think of the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, dark blue, and purple. Yes, fire can be all of them! The color of fire depends on two things. One is the heat of the fire. The hotter the fire, the whiter its color. Forest fires usually burn whitest near the ground, then yellow a meter or two above the ground. Then, they get redder and redder right up to the tops of the trees, where the black and gray part begins (we call it smoke). The color of fire also depends on what is burning. You ve seen a blue flame (φλόγα), haven t you? With a little green and yellow in it, too? Natural gas (φυσικό αέριο) burns like that, and so does wood if it s not dry or if the fire isn t very hot. Fire can be a good thing if it s controlled, but a terrible thing if it s not. Think of the forest fires that burned all over Greece a couple of summers ago. Think of the fires that have sometimes burned people s homes to the ground and those that destroyed most of Thessaloniki in Your parents have probably told you not to play with matches. Fire is nothing to play with, except if you re a fire-eater in the circus! In America there is a bear named Smokey. He s not a real bear, just a kind of cartoon character. He s always telling people Only you can prevent forest fires! He means that it s your job to be careful with fire in the woods. Many forest fires are caused by people who don t put out their campfires with enough water or who throw their cigarettes away near grass or dry leaves. If you are having a nice walk in the woods and you smell smoke, that s probably not a good sign. Oh, and did you know that the sun is on fire, too? And that one day the fire will stop burning? But don t worry. They say that won t happen for another ten billion years. For now, remember what Smokey said! 18

19 106. According to the text, most of the fires that you see every day are A) burning houses B) the fires that make cars and buses go C) cigarettes burning D) fires used for cooking 107. In a forest fire, the fire would probably look orange A) if the wood is wet B) at the bottom of the trees C) at the top of the trees D) half way up the trees 108. The word prevent in line 28 means A) stop something from happening B) know what will happen C) start something D) not do something bad 109. Why is smelling smoke in the woods probably not a good sign (line 32)? A) Smokey is probably watching you. B) Someone probably wasn t careful with fire. C) Smoking cigarettes is not allowed in the woods. D) Someone is cooking something at their campfire According to the text (σύμφωνα με το κείμενο), which ONE of the following is TRUE? A) The sun only looks like it s on fire. B) No one should ever play with fire for any reason. C) Fire has two faces: one is good, the other bad. D) Smokey visited Thessaloniki in
