HOLY EUCHARIST (HOLY COMMUNION) Holy Communion is a Sacrament within the Orthodox Church and is only offered to Baptized and/or Chrismated Orthodox Christians who have prepared themselves to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As you come to receive, please follow the direction of the Parish Council Members, Ushers, and Acolytes. We remind everyone that the Blessed Bread (Antidoron) offered at the end of the Divine Liturgy may be received by all. CHURCH GOSPEL AND SERMON ETIQUETTE It is disrespectful to arrive late for Liturgy and walk to a front pew while our clergy are reading the Gospel or delivering their sermons. It is also distracting to others who are attempting to concentrate on the message. If you must enter Liturgy late, you are kindly asked to take a seat at the very back until the Gospel or sermon are completed.

5 EPISTLE Timothy 4:9-15 T imothy, my son, the saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance. For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe. Command and teach these things. Let no one despise your youth, but set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. Till I come, attend to the public reading of scripture, to preaching, to teaching. Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophetic utterance when the council of elders laid their hands upon you. Practice these duties, devote yourself to them, so that all may see your progress. GOSPEL Luke 19:1-10 A t that time, Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. And there was a man named Zacchaios; he was a chief collector, and rich. And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not, on account of the crowd, because he was small of stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaios, make haste and come down; for I must stay at your house today." So he made haste and came down, and received him joyfully. And when they saw it they all murmured, "He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner." And Zacchaios stood and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded any one of anything, I restore it fourfold." And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of man came to seek and to save the lost." For the Saints You have given us the miracles of Your holy Martyrs as an impregnable fortress, O Christ our God. Father and Hierarch Nicholas, intercede with Christ our God, that our souls may be saved. 7 TRYPHO THE MARTYR The Holy Martyr Trypho was from Lampsacus in Phrygia, and as a young man he tended geese. Being filled with the gifts of the Holy Spirit, he also healed sufferings and cast out demons. During the reign of the Emperor Decius, about the year 250, he was betrayed as a Christian and taken to Nicaea, where he was beaten, bound to horses and dragged over rough ground, then dragged naked over nails; his sides were burned with torches; finally he was sentenced to beheading, but gave up his holy soul in his torments before the stroke of the sword. Saint Trypho is one of the Holy Unmercenaries, and is also invoked for the protection of gardens from insects and pests. ΑΓΙΟΣ ΤΡΥΦΩΝ Ο ΜΑΡΤΥΡΑΣ O Άγιος Τρύφων καταγόταν από τη Λάμψακο της Φρυγίας. Στην παιδική του ηλικία, έβοσκε χήνες για να ζήσει. Συγχρόνως όμως μελετούσε την Αγία Γραφή και εκτελούσε με ευλάβεια τα θρησκευτικά του καθήκοντα. Γρήγορα η ευσεβής ψυχή του δέχθηκε τη χάρη του Αγίου Πνεύματος και ο Θεός αξίωσε τον Τρύφωνα να θαυματουργεί. Όταν αυτοκράτορας έγινε ο Δέκιος, εξαπέλυσε άγριο διωγμό κατά των Χριστιανών. Το 250 μ.χ. ο Άγιος συνελήφθη και ομολόγησε με θάρρος την πίστη του. Τότε υποβλήθηκε σε φρικτά βασανιστήρια. Του κατατρύπησαν με σπαθιά όλο του το σώμα, έπειτα τον έδεσαν από τα πόδια σε άλογα και τον έσυραν, σε ώρες φοβερού ψύχους, σε δύσβατες και πετρώδεις τοποθεσίες. Εκείνος προσευχόταν και έλεγε: «Κύριε, μην τους καταλογίσεις αυτή την αμαρτία». Λίγες ημέρες μετά και πάλι ομολόγησε με πνευματική ανδρεία το Όνομα του Θεού. Τον έσυραν τότε γυμνό πάνω σε σιδερένια καρφιά, κατόπιν τον μαστίγωσαν και στη συνέχεια του έκαψαν με λαμπάδες τα πλευρά. Στο τέλος, μόλις ο Μάρτυρας παρέδωσε την ψυχή του στον Θεό Saints and Feasts λέγοντας το «Κύριε Ιησού Χριστέ, δέξαι το πνεύμα μου», απέκοψαν την τίμια κεφαλή αυτού. Οι Χριστιανοί παρέλαβαν το τίμιο λείψανο του Μάρτυρος και το απέστειλαν στην πόλη της Λαμψάκου κατά την επιθυμία του. THE PRESENTATION OF OUR LORD & SAVIOR IN THE TEMPLE When the most pure Mother and Ever-Virgin Mary's 40 days of purification had been fulfilled, she took her Son to Jerusalem, taccording to the Law of Moses, which teaches that every first-born male child be dedicated to God, and also that she might offer the sacrifice of a pair of turtle-doves as required by the Law. On this same day, the greatly aged Symeon, was also present in the temple. For a long time, this man had been awaiting the salvation of God, and he had been informed by divine revelation that he would not die until he beheld the Lord's Christ. Thus, when he beheld Him at that time and took Him up into his aged arms, he gave glory to God, singing: "Now lettest Thou Thy servant depart in peace, O Master..." And he confessed that he would close his eyes joyfully, since he had seen the Light of revelation for the nations and the Glory of Israel. From ancient times, the Holy Church has retained this tradition of the churching of the mother and new-born child on the 40th day and of the reading of prayers of purification. ΥΠΑΠΑΝΤΗ ΤΟΥ ΚΥΡΙΟΥ ΚΑΙ ΘΕΟΥ ΚΑΙ ΣΩΤΗΡΟΣ ΗΜΩΝ ΙΗΣΟΥ ΧΡΙΣΤΟΥ Το γεγονός αυτό εξιστορεί ο ευαγγελιστής Λουκάς. Συνέβη 40 μέρες μετά τη γέννηση του Ιησού. Σύμφωνα με το Μωσαϊκό νόμο, η Παρθένος Μαρία πήγε στο Ναό της Ιερουσαλήμ μαζί με τον Ιωσήφ, για να εκτελεσθεί η τυπική αφιέρωση του βρέφους στο Θεό κατά το «πάν άρσεν διανοίγον μήτραν (δηλαδή πρωτότοκο) άγιον τω Κυρίω κληθήσεται» και για να προσφέρουν θυσία, που αποτελούνταν από ένα ζευγάρι τρυγόνια. Κατά τη μετάβαση αυτή, δέχθηκε τον Ιησού στην αγκαλιά του ο υπερήλικας Συμεών. Αυτό το γεγονός αποτελεί άλλη μια απόδειξη ότι ο Κύριος Ιησούς Χριστός δεν ήλθε να καταργήσει τον Μωσαϊκό νόμο, όπως ισχυρίζονταν οι υποκριτές Φαρισαίοι και Γραμματείς, αλλά να τον συμπληρώσει, να τον τελειοποιήσει.

9 THANKING GOD As Orthodox Christians, we are called to a new way of seeing things a new way of life. Stewardship is obedience to the greatest commandment to love the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. We are called to bring ourselves and others to commit our lives to Jesus Christ in such a way that leads us to the joy of knowing him personally and profoundly. Thus, the question is not, How much do I give to stay in the club? or What are the dues? The real question we need to ask ourselves is How do I thank God for my many blessings? LEAVE THE REST TO GOD You cannot do everything, but you can do something. God wants you to do your best and leave the rest to him. Saint Theofan said, Exert all your strength, but rest your concern for success on God. The Lord doesn t expect any more from us than what we have to offer. But He does expect us to be faithful and that we do our very best for Him. We do our best and leave the rest to Him.

11 REVITALIZATION OF YAL St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral is reestablishing our ministry to the Young Adult age group (ages 18-35) by rebranding it as Young Adult Leaders (previously known as Young Adult League). Our YAL group is an opportunity for young adults from our community to gather together and share with one another their experiences about life, discuss their values, and how the Church still plays a role in their lives in an age that is ever-changing. YAL is a venue for growth of the human spirit, development of friendships and connections, as well as the exploration of faith. YAL s ministry covers a very large age bracket and members will of course be at different stages in their journey of life. The vision of our YAL ministry is to gather individuals at these different stages so that they can discuss the daily struggles of where they are at in their life with others who might be dealing with similar struggles and be able to overcome them together. Our sponsored events will be characterized by a defined balance of Social aspects with Faith- Based Discussion, and Faith-in-Action Opportunities. YAL will be sponsoring Social and Christian Education events such as Orthodoxy on Tap, Coffee House, and business Networking Events. At the same time, it will offer YAL members the opportunity to put their faith into action by organizing Volunteer Opportunities (such as Habitat for Humanity, Ronald McDonald House, and our own local soup kitchens). Join us at our YAL Opening Night on February 11, from 8:00-10:00 pm at Alchemy Art Lounge located on 25 Dodecanese Blvd in Tarpon Springs! SWEETHEART PANCAKE BREAKFAST The St Nicholas Preschool will be hosting a Sweetheart Pancake Breakfast following the first divine liturgy on February 14. What an enjoyable way to support our little ones! Tickets, priced at $5 for adults and $3 for children under 10, will be available for purchase at the coffee hour today and next week.
