He kindly asks that you not expect him to stay for a meal and thanks you in advance for understanding. GREEK SCHOOL NEWS There is NO Youth Greek School this Saturday and Sunday. But, the community will note that a special book exchange called "Books in Action" will take place on Saturday, February 27, from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm in the Hellenic Cultural Center. Children's books by Greek authors will be swapped, and "Psarosoupitsa" by Georgios Lebessis will be read aloud STEWARDSHIP MINISTRY HOLY TRINITY GREEK ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL As a new year begins, it is once again time to think about making your yearly stewardship pledge to our Cathedral. This year s theme is those who seek the Lord shall never be in want of any good thing (from the Artoclasia service). This theme is especially meaningful because it emphasizes that all good things come from our Lord, and it is our obligation to support His Holy Church with a portion of the blessings that He has bestowed upon us. In February the 2016 Stewardship Campaign Packet will be mailed to you. However, you can go ahead now and make a pledge at this time. As in the past two years, the opportunity to sponsor a day on the church s calendar for a minimum pledge of $1,000 is offered. Please consider doing this now as a number of days have already been taken. GREEK FESTIVAL PASTRY WORKSHOPS The Greek Festival Pastry Committee invites all ladies and gentlemen to assist them in preparing pastries. The first workshops will be Tuesday, February 16, and Wednesday, February 17, from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm. Workshops will continue each week except Holy Week. Everyone is needed, so please join the group for fellowship and lunch as the pastries are prepared. Thank you in advance for supporting this endeavor. ROAD CLOSURES IN FEBRUARY The Rock n Roll New Orleans Marathon, ½ Marathon, and 10K is coming up on Sunday, February 28, All race courses, which will be the same as last year, will affect access to the Cathedral grounds on that day. Parishioners living west of Marconi Drive will need to use I-610 East and exit at St. Bernard Avenue.

2 FEBRUARY COFFEE HOUR SPONSOR The community extends its sincerest thanks to the SAVVAIDES FAMILY for volunteering to provide refreshments after Sunday church services in February. Their hospitality, offered in memory of SOPHIA SAVVOPOULOU, greatly enhances efforts to develop a Sunday fellowship ministry for parishioners and visitors. SJCOF AND PROGRESSIVE COFFEE February 21, 2016 This year ALL Holy Trinity Church School students will be involved in the local Saint John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival, which will take place on Sunday, February 21, in the Cathedral. The oratorical festival is an annual event sponsored by the Archdiocese Department of Religious Education. It provides an opportunity for young people to study and share a topic of the Orthodox faith. The program is divided into several groups. The Junior (7-9 graders) and Senior (10-12 graders) groups will speak in Church and have the possibility of representing the parish at the Western Conference Festival, which happens to be in New Orleans on Saturday, April 2, during the Family Lenten Retreat weekend. Each parish can send two representatives from each division. The elementary and preschool grades will show off their presentations (visual and/or written) during a Progressive Coffee Fellowship. Having the younger students involved gives them the opportunity to also share their faith. The coffee fellowship on February 21 will be sponsored by both the Sunday Church School staff and families during which each class will have a table to display its class work and also provide some refreshments. Parents are asked to help with the refreshments, as well as the children's projects. To remind families of what items to bring, below is the list organized by grades. Families, please bring an item from your child's class assignment. Message from Father George REGARDING SAINT PAUL'S PREPARATION OF SAINT TIMOTHY In this morning s Epistle reading from Saint Paul s First Letter to Timothy, Saint Paul is preparing Timothy for his service in the Church. The phrase: was given you by prophetic utterance when the council of elders laid their hands upon you indicates that Timothy was ordained as a presbyter of the Church. The term laying on of hands is the Biblical description of the ordination that a man receives to become a deacon or priest even today. So, there is very clear evidence that the tradition that we continue to live in the Church today is uniquely tied to the experience of the early Church from the time Timothy was being sent out to shepherd his flock. Since Saint Paul is well aware of the potential for problems that Timothy would face in his ministry, he reminds him to be a man of good character. The Saint is exhorting Timothy to provide an example by living an upright and holy life. Through his presence in the Church community he would be offering his flock the proper example of how these new Christians ought to live their lives. As the Saint continues, he says: Till I come, attend to the public reading of scripture, to preaching, to teaching. The Orthodox Study Bible reminds us that: the early Church had a liturgical worship service including the reading of Scripture and the homily the roots of which were in the synagogue. Although this advice is being offered to the newly ordained young man as he was being sent out to be a minister of Christ, it is sound advice for all Christians. As followers of Christ we are enjoined to be of good character and lead an upright and holy life. We are encouraged to read our Scripture regularly and participate in the worship services of the Church. The wisdom of Saint Paul s teaching is far reaching for he is offering it to a young man as he is about to be sent off to attend to the priestly duties of the Church in about the year 64 or 65 AD. The message is just as fresh and pertinent today as it was 1,950 years ago. Be of an upright spirit and lead a holy life for this is well-pleasing to God. THE EPISTLE Timothy 4:9-15 The Lord will give strength to his people. Bring to the Lord, O sons of God, bring to the Lord honor and glory. TIMOTHY, my son, the saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance. For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe. Command and teach these things. Let no one despise your youth, but set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. Till I come, attend to the public reading of scripture, to preaching, to teaching. Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophetic utterance when the council of elders laid their hands upon you. THE GOSPEL Luke 19:1-10 At that time, Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. And there was a man named Zacchaeus; he was a chief collector, and rich. And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not, on account of the crowd, because he was small of stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, make haste and come down; for I must stay at your house today." So he made haste and came down, and received him joyfully. And when they saw it they all murmured, "He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner." And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded any one of anything, I restore it fourfold." And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of man came to seek and to save the lost.
