Each group insists that the game they play must be the one they have chosen. They can't adapt themselves to play the game chosen by the others. The people of this generation, Christ goes on to say, are much like those children. When John the Baptist preached among them, they dismissed his self-discipline and fasting--"neither eating bread nor drinking wine,"--as too severe. So, they said, it must be the work of a demon. But when they saw another kind of living practiced by the Son of Man, they didn't like that either, for the opposite reason. Jesus "has come eating and drinking" and so they call Him a glutton and a drunkard. They add to this another charge that apparently strikes them as going right along with gluttony and drunkenness: He is a "friend of tax collectors and sinners." Jesus assures His listeners, though, that "wisdom is justified by all her children." No matter what criticisms people may dream up to reject John and the Son of Man, they both are doing God's work, and the fruits of that work will become evident. The faith will spread, the numbers of disciples will grow, and those who have made up their minds to follow Christ will know that He is the Truth. An epistle reading for this day is Galatians 4: Paul agonizes as he asks a question of the Galatians. Before they knew God, they were in "bondage to beings that by nature are no gods." But "...now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and beggarly elemental spirits, whose slaves you want to be once more?" Paul makes a specific complaint: "You observe days, and months, and seasons, and years." He is addressing Christians still young in the faith. They are being urged by certain teachers to go back to the Old Testament calendar, and to observe the Jewish laws that go with it. Paul wants them to remember, instead, how joyfully they responded when he preached the Gospel to them. They received him "as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus." But now, cajoled by false teachers, they are hostile to him. "What has become of the satisfaction you felt?" he asks in bewilderment. What has become of the faithfulness to the Gospel they once made up their minds to live by? Jesus wants His hearers not to manufacture reasons to reject the truth. Paul wants his hearers not to turn back from the faith he preached. It's time for all of them, and all of us, to make up our minds and follow.

Constantine and Helen Having seen the image of Thy Cross in Heaven, and like Paul, having received the call not from men, Thine apostle among kings entrusted the commonwealth to Thy hand, O Lord. Keep us always in peace, by the intercessions of the Theotokos, O only Friend of man. Apolytikion of St. Nicholas The truth of things hath revealed thee to thy flock as a rule of faith, an icon of meekness, and a teacher of temperance; for this cause, thou hast achieved the heights by humility, riches by poverty. O Father and Hierarch Nicholas, intercede with Christ God that our souls be saved. Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God. St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 4:6-15 Brethren, it is the God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For while we live we are always being given up to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you.since we have the same spirit of faith as he had who wrote, "I believed, and so I spoke," we too believed, and so we speak, knowing that He who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into His presence. For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God. Κατὰ Λουκᾶν 6:31-36 Εἶπεν ὁ Κύριος καθὼς θέλετε ἵνα ποιῶσιν ὑμῖν οἱ ἄνθρωποι, ποιεῖτε αὐτοῖς ὁμοίως. καὶ εἰ ἀγαπᾶτε τοὺς ἀγαπῶντας ὑμᾶς, ποία ὑμῖν χάρις ἐστί; καὶ γὰρ οἱ ἁμαρτωλοὶ τοὺς ἀγαπῶντας αὐτοὺς ἀγαπῶσι. καὶ ἐὰν ἀγαθοποιῆτε τοὺς ἀγαθοποιοῦντας ὑμᾶς, ποία ὑμῖν χάρις ἐστί; καὶ γὰρ οἱ ἁμαρτωλοὶ τὸ αὐτὸ ποιοῦσι. καὶ ἐὰν δανείζητε παρ ὧν ἐλπίζετε ἀπολαβεῖν, ποία ὑμῖν χάρις ἐστί; καὶ γὰρ ἁμαρτωλοὶ ἁμαρτωλοῖς δανείζουσιν ἵνα ἀπολάβωσι τὰ ἴσα. πλὴν ἀγαπᾶτε τοὺς ἐχθροὺς ὑμῶν καὶ ἀγαθοποιεῖτε καὶ δανείζετε μηδὲν ἀπελπίζοντες, καὶ ἔσται ὁ μισθὸς ὑμῶν πολύς, καὶ ἔσεσθε υἱοὶ ὑψίστου, ὅτι αὐτὸς χρηστός ἐστιν ἐπὶ τοὺς ἀχαρίστους καὶ πονηρούς. But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the selfish. Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful."

5 Ο Άγιος Διονύσιος Αρεοπαγίτης 3 Οκτωβρίου Ο Άγιος Διονύσιος καταγόταν από την πόλη των Αθηνών. Έζησε και μαρτύρησε τα χρόνια που αυτοκράτορας ήταν ο Δομετιανός. Διακρίθηκε για τη φιλοσοφική του κατάρτιση κα τη βαθιά του καλλιέργεια.αρχικά ήταν ειδωλολάτρης και μέλος της Βουλής του Αρείου Πάγου. Το κήρυγμα όμως του Αποστόλου Παύλου άγγιξε την παιδευμένη και ευαίσθητη ψυχή του και βαπτίσθηκε. Αργότερα διαδέχθηκε στον επισκοπικό θρόνο των Αθηνών τον ευσεβή Ιερόθεο. Επιβραβεύθηκε από το θεό για τη χριστιανική του δράση με το χάρισμα να επιτελεί θαύματα.περιόδευσε σε πολλά μέρη της Δύσης, όπου κήρυξε τον ευαγγελικό λόγο και ερμήνευσε τις ιερές γραφές. Όταν έφθασε στο Παρίσι συνελήφθη και αργότερα αποκεφαλίσθηκε. Μαζί του μαρτύρησαν και δύο μαθητές του, ο Ρουστικός και ο Ελευθέριος. Ο ηγεμόνας της περιοχής έδωσε εντολή να μη θάψει κανείς τα άγια λείψανα των μαρτύρων, όμως κάποιοι χριστιανοί τα φύλαξαν και όταν δεν υπήρχε πλέον φόβος τα ενταφίασαν με τιμές.κατά την άποψη του Μιχαήλ Ι. Γαλανού «εἰς τὰ συναξάρια ὅμως, καὶ εἰς τὸ Μηναῖον αὐτὸ ἐν τῷ ἑορτολογίῳ τῆς τρίτης Ὀκτωβρίου, τελεῖται ἀνατροπὴ τῆς ἱστορικῆς... ἀληθείας» (Γαλανού Ι. Μιχαήλ, Οι βίοι των Αγίων, μην Οκτώβριος, Αθήναι 1951, σελ. 22). Σύμφωνα με τον παραπάνω συγγραφέα, η άποψη, κατά την οποία ο Άγιος Διονύσιος ο Αρεοπαγίτης μαρτύρησε στο Παρίσι, είναι εσφαλμένη. Ο Άγιος Διονύσιος υπήρξε συγγραφέας πλήθους θεολογικών συγγραμμάτων, από τα όποια παραθέτουμε σε μετάφραση ορισμένα λόγια του, σχετικά με την Αγιότητα, τη Βασιλεία και την Κυριότητα του Θεού: «Αγιότητα, λοιπόν, είναι κατά τη γνώμη μας η καθαρότητα η α- σημάδευτη από οποιοδήποτε μίασμα, η πλήρης και ολότελα άσπιλη. Βασιλεία είναι η τακτοποίηση κάθε ορίου, κάθε τάξης, κανονισμού, κατάστασης. Κυριότητα δεν είναι μόνο η υπεροχή πάνω στους χειρότερους, άλλο και η συνολική των καλών και αγαθών και πλήρης ολοκτησία, καθώς και η αληθινή και αμετάβλητη βεβαιότητα. Γι αυτό και η κυριότητα ετυμολογείται από το "κύρος" και το "κύριο" και το "κυρίευαν". Θε- ότητα είναι η πρόνοια που θεάται τα πάντα και με τέλεια αγαθότητα "περιθέει" (περιέχει) και συνέχει τα πάντα, τα γεμίζει με τον εαυτό της και υπερέχει α- πό όλα όσα απολαμβάνουν τα δώρα της πρόνοιας της» (Διονυσίου Αρεοπαγίτου, «Περί Θείων Ονομάτων». Εκδόσεις Π. Πουρναρό). Περισσότερες και πιο συγκεκριμένες ιστορικές πληροφορίες για τη ζωή του Αγίου Διονυσίου δεν έχουμε πλην αυτών των λίγων που προαναφέραμε. Τα υπόλοιπα που αναφέρουν ορισμένοι Συναξαριστές ανήκουν στα πλαίσια της παραδόσεως και μόνο. Ύστερα από την με αριθμ. 22/30 Σεπτεμβρίου 1999 μ.χ. εγκύκλιο της Ιεράς Αρχιεπισκοπής Αθηνών, η μνήμη του Αγίου Διονυσίου του Αρεοπαγίτου συμπεριελήφθηκε να τιμάται επιπρόσθετα και στις 12 Οκτωβρίου όπου και ορίσθηκε να τιμάται η Σύναξη των εν Αθήναις Αγίων.
