Αγαπητοί μου εν Κυρίω ευλαβείς Χριστιανοί, Στην σημερινή μας εποχή, συνηθίζουμε να δίνουμε την μεγαλύτερη σημασία στα δώρα τα Χριστούγεννα. Η παράδοση των δώρων σηνδέεται βαθειά με την εορτή των Χριστουγένων. Τα πρώτα Χριστούγεννα ο Πανάγαθος Θεός μας έδωσε το πρωτότυπο δώρο. Μας χάρισε το μεγαλύτερο δώρο που είχε δοθεί, Ο ΘΕΟΣ ΜΑΣ ΔΩΡΙΣΕ ΤΩΝ ΕΑΥΤΟ ΤΟΥ. Πως μπορούμε να φανταστούμε τέτοιο φενόμενο; Ποιός ο λόγος να έρθει ο Δημιουγός του κόσμου στην μικρή μας γη και ακόμη πιο απίστευτο, που έλαβε την ανθρώπινη φύση που ήταν κάτω από τις επίγειες συνθήκες της φθοράς; Ο Άγιος Ειρηναίος μας λέει ότι, «Ο Λόγος του Θεού, ο Ιησούς Χριστός, από την μεγάλη του αγάπη για την ανθρωπότητα, έγινε αυτό που είμαστε εμείς για να μας ποιήσει αυτό που είναι Αυτός» (Κατά Αιρέσεων, 5. πρόλογος) Δηλαδή, σαν ανρώπινο γένος κάτι μας έλειπε και χρειάστηκαι να μας χαρίση ο Θεός τον ίδιο τον Υιό Του. Καλούμαστε να παρομοιάσουμε την αγιότητα το Θεού σ' αυτή τη προσορινή ζωή, αν και επηρεαζόμαστε από την φθορά του κόσμου, δεν μας περιορίζει. Ελευθερόμαστε από των πεσμένο κόσμο διαμέσου τον ίδιο τον Θεάνθρωπο Ιησού Χριστό ο οποίος θεραπέυει την ραγισμένη ανθρωπότητα μας. Ο Άγιος Γρηγόριος ο θεολόγος μας είχε γράψει στην Επιστολή του 101,32 «τὸ γὰρ ἀπρόσληπτον ἀθεράπευτον». Δηλαδή, ο παντογνώστος Θεός γνωρίζει ότι ο μοναδικός αληθινός τρόπος να Τόν γνωρίσουμε σ' αυτή την ζωή και στην αιώνια ζωή είναι να μας στείλει το μεγαλύτερο και πρωτοφανής δώρο Του, τον αγαπητό Μονογενή Υιό Του και ένσαρκο Λόγο του Θεού. Ο Ευαγγελιστής Ιωάννης ο θεολόγος μας λέει, «οὕτω γὰρ ἠγάπησεν ὁ Θεὸς τὸν κόσμον, ὥστε τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ τὸν μονογενῆ ἔδωκεν, ἵνα πᾶς ὁ πιστεύων εἰς αὐτὸν μὴ ἀπόληται, ἀλλ ἔχῃ ζωὴν αἰώνιον». (Ιωάννου γ' 16) Αυτή είναι η πραγματική αιτία για την πρώτη παρουσίαση του Ιησού Χριστού στο κόσμο, το αληθές Χριστουγενιάτικο δώρο του Θεού. Στα Χριστούγεννα, όταν κάπιος μας δώσει ένα δώρο, σκεφτόμαστε των δωρητή. Μπορεί να μας έχει δώσει ένα πολύτιμο δώρο και τότε δυσκολευόμαστε να εκφράσουμε με λόγια τα αισθήματα μας της ευχαριστίας. Ό απόστολος Παύλος όταν αντιλαβάνει το ανέκφραστο δώρο του Θεού στην ανθρωπότητα την ημέρα που γεννήθηκε κατά Σάρκα ο Ιησούς Χριστός, δυσκολεύεται να εκφράσει με λόγια την βαθειά ευγνωμοσύνη του. Ο ίδιος μεγάλος απόστολος του Χριστού που μας προσφέρει τις βαθύτατες σκέψεις και απολογισμούς στις δεκατέσσερες επιστολές του της Καινής Διαθήκης, καταβάλλεται από το μεγαλείο της Θεϊκης ενανθρώπισης του Κυρίου, και μας λέει, «χάρις δὲ τῷ Θεῷ ἐπὶ τῇ ἀνεκδιηγήτῳ αὐτοῦ δωρεᾷ». (Β Κορ. θ'15) Έχετε σκεφθεί ποτέ ότι ο Χριστός είναι το μεγαλύτερο δώρο που σας έχει δωθεί; Ο Ιησούς Χριστός είναι το πιο πολύτιμο δώρο που θα λάβετε στη ζωή. Όταν ο Θεός μας χάρισε τον μονογενή Υιό Του, μας έδωσε κάθε ευλογία. Μας δώρησε το αιώνιο δώρο Του. Όλοι μας, είτε νέος η μεγάλος, πλούσιος η φτωχός, ασθενής η υγειής, βρίσκουμε στο πρόσωπο του Κυρίου τις πιο πολύτιμες ευλογίες της ζωής. Το Φως της Βηθλεέμ μας αγωγή, μας τροφοδοτεί, μας παρηγορεί, μας φωτίζει και καθοδογεί στην επίγεια ζωή μας καθώς και στην αιώνια ζωή μας. Όπως φτάνουμε και πάλιν εφέτος στο Μυστήριον της Γεννήσεως του Χριστού, ας δώσουμε όλοι την προσοχή μας στο μεγαλύτερο δώρο του Θεού στο κόσμο, τον Κύριο μας Ιησού Χριστό. Αυτά τα Χριστούγεννα ας γίνει η καρδιά μας την ταπεινή φάτνη που γεννιέται ο Χριστός να μας την καθαγιάσει. Ας προετιμαστούμε με πίστη, προσευχή, νηστεία, ελεημοσύνη και μετάνοια για να μεταλάβουμε σωστά την Θεία Κοινωνία. Τότε θα νιώσουμε την πραγματική Παρουσία Του, την επουράνια ειρήνη και ευλογία Του και την Θεϊκή Χάριν Του στην ζωή μας. Όσο πλησιάσουμε τον Κύριο Ιησού Χριστό με αυτό τον τρόπο, τόσο προσεγγίζουμε την θεοποίηση μας που είναι κυρίος σκοπός της ζωής μας. Για τον καθένα μας, αυτό είναι το νόημη των Χριστουγγένων, της Θείας Ενανθρωπήσεως «χάρις δὲ τῷ Θεῷ ἐπὶ τῇ ἀνεκδιηγήτῳ αὐτοῦ δωρεᾷ». ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ ΓΕΝΝΑΤΑΙ! Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, These days, the giving of gifts has become the most important part of this joyous Christmas season. There is good reason why this custom is associated with the Feastday of Christmas. On the first Nativity, God gave the original Christmas present. He gave the greatest gift that has ever been given: GOD GAVE HIMSELF. It is utterly fantastic to think that such a thing could happen. Why should the Creator of the entire universe come to this tiny planet of ours, and even more incredible, take upon Himself our frail human flesh, becoming one with the race of mankind? St. Irenaeus of Lyons so eloquently tells us, "The Word of God, Jesus Christ, on account of His great love for mankind, became what we are in order to make us what He is Himself." (Against Heresies Book 5. Preface) As such, there is something lacking in us, there was and is a need for us to be more than what we are in this life. We are all called to imitate and be a mirror reflection of God's holiness, even during the short time we spend here on this earth. Although we are affected by our human frailty and the corruption of this world, we are not bound by it. Instead we are freed from these limitations through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ who heals everything in us that is broken. On this subject, St. Gregory Nazianzus, the Theologian writing against the false teaching of Apollinarius beautifully explains, "that which He [Christ] has not assumed He has not healed." (Epistle 101,32 critique of Apollinarianism) God who knows all things, recognizes that the only way for us to really know Him and live with Him here and in eternity is to give us the gift of His beloved Son, the Word Incarnate. St. John the Evangelist states this clearly when he writes, "God sent us His only begotten Son so that whoever believes in Him should not perish but, have eternal life." (John 3:16) This is where we find the real reason for the coming of Christ, the real Christmas gift. Now, when people receive a Christmas present they usually thank the one who gave the gift. Sometimes if it a very lavish gift, they might find it difficult to express feelings of appreciation. When our patron St. Paul thought of God's Gift to mankind on Christmas Day, he found it very difficult to express his feelings with words of gratitude. Remember that the very well educated St. Paul had no trouble relating his profound thoughts. This is clearly testified in the fourteen of the twenty seven books of the New Testament he has authored. But, when it came to the Great Gift of Christmas, St. Paul was too overcome with the majesty of the Divine Incarnation of our Lord. And so he writes, "Thanks be to God for His inexpressible Gift!" (2 Corinthians 9:15) Have you ever thought of Christ as the greatest gift ever given to you? He is the most wonderful Christmas gift you will ever receive. When God gave us His only begotten Son, He gave us every kind of blessing. He gave us the Present that will last forever. Young and old, rich and poor, the sick and the healthy- all find in our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ the richest blessings of life. In Christ we find a light to nurture us, feed us, comfort us, illumine us and guide us along our journey in this life and into the afterlife. This Christmas let us turn our attention to God's Greatest Gift, our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Let us offer our hearts as the Manger, in which Christ can be born. Let us prepare faithfully, with prayer and fasting, acts of charity and repentance, so that we may properly receive Holy Communion. This way we can experience His real loving presence and comfort, His heavenly peace, and His divine grace in our lives. This is our calling and our purpose. For each of us, this is the meaning of Christmas - "Thanks be to God for His inexpressible Gift!" CHRIST IS BORN! LET US GLORIFY HIM! Αυτή την περίοδο ας προβληματιστούμε με τα επιτεύγματα μας και τις αδυναμίες μας και ας ορίσουμε νέα οράματα, νέα όνειρα και νέες ατελείωτες δυνατότητες. Το πιο σημαντικό είναι να ανανεώσουμε τις προσπάθειές μας με έμφαση στην Εν Χριστό ζωή μας. Απο το περασμένο Πασχαλινό ενημερωτικό δελτίο που λάβατε, η Κοινότητά μας ήταν πολύ απασχολημένη με πολλές και διάφορες δραστηριότητες. Μετά από μια λαμπρή Μεγάλη Εβδομάδα με αποκορύφωμα το χαρούμενο και φωτεινό Πάσχα η κοινότητα ήρθε μαζί για να προετοιμαστεί για το 36ο Ετήσιο Ελληνικό Φεστιβάλ. Αν και τη δεύτερη ημέρα του φεστιβάλ ο καιρός δεν ήταν συνεργάσιμος το φεστιβάλ ήταν επιτυχές λόγω των εσόδων ρεκόρ της πρώτης ημέρας. Ευχαριστούμε την οργανωτική επιτροπή τοu φεστιβάλ, τις κυρίες της Φιλοπτώχου, όλους τους εθελοντές και όλους τους χορηγούς για την επιτυχία του Ελληνικού Φεστιβάλ. Στις 28 Ιουνίου, γιορτάσαμε την εορτή των πολιούχων μας Αγίων Αποστόλων Πέτρου και Παύλου με τον ιεραρχικό Μέγα Εσπερινό και Θεία Λειτουργία, με επικεφαλής τον Σεβασμιώτατο Μητροπολίτη κ.κ Σωτήριο. Η Κοινότητά μας παρέθεσε δεξίωση για όλους τους ιερείς που παρευρίσκονταν και όλους τους επισκέπτες από διάφορες άλλες κοινότητες. Η 10η Ετήσια καλοκαιρινή κατασκήνωση της κοινότητας μας πραγματοποιήθηκε τον Αύγουστο, υπό τη διεύθυνση της πρεσβυτέρας Σταματίας Χατζή με την συμμετοχή πολλών παιδιών. Τον Σεπτέμβριο, με την αρχή του νέου εκκλησιαστικού έτους, η κοινότητά μας ζωντάνεψε με την οργάνωση και προσφορά όλων των εκκλησιαστικών προγραμμάτων. Φέτος προσθέσαμε ένα δεύτερο πρόγραμμα GOYA υπο την διεύθυνση των Σοφίας και Dan Σαββίδη. Για την επέτειο της 28 ης Οκτωβρίου, το Κοινοτικό Συμβούλιο της Εκκλησίας παρέθεσε γεύμα και εκδήλωση με ένα τμήμα του χορευτικού προγράμματος της κοινότητάς μας και με απαγγελία ποιημάτων. Στις 16 Οκτωβρίου, το Κοινοτικό Συμβούλιο της Εκκλησίας πραγματοποίησε Γενική Συνέλευση μετά τη Θεία Λειτουργία. Σε αυτή την συνέλευση ορίστηκε η ελεχτική και εφορευτική επιτροπή για την εκλογή νέου διοικιτικού συμβουλίου. Είμαι στην ευχάριστη θέση να σας ανακοινώσω ότι για μια ακόμη φορά την 31η Δεκεμβρίου, το εκκλησιαστικό κοινοτικό συμβούλιο οργανώνει Πρωτοχρονιάτικη χοροεσπερίδα στο Bingemans Grand Ballroom. Σας προσκαλούμε όλους να έρθετε να γιορτάσουμε μαζί τον ερχομό του νέου έτους Στο πνεύμα της Γεννήσεως του Κυρίου και Σωτήρα μας, θα ήθελα να εκφράσω τις εγκάρδιες ευχαριστίες μου προς τα μέλη του κοινοτικού συμβουλίου της εκκλησίας μας, οι οποίοι για τα δύο τελευταία χρόνια έχουν προσφέρει την υπηρεσία τους στον Χριστό και την εκκλησιαστική μας κοινότητα. Θα ήθελα να ευχαριστήσω την κα Κωνσταντίνα Γκοβάνη, Πρόεδρος της Φιλοπτώχου και όλα τα μέλη της, τους διευθυντές της Ιστοσελίδας μας, τους ψάλτες, την Χορωδία, τα Ιερόπαιδα, και όλους τους εθελοντές των διαφόρων προγραμμάτων της κοινότητάς μας. Θέλω να εκφράσω την βαθύτατη εκτίμησή μου σε όλους τους ενορίτες για τη συνεχή υποστήριξη και συνεισφορά τους. Κλείνοντας, θα ήθελα να εκφράσω τη βαθύτατη ευγνωμοσύνη μου προς τον πάτερ Κωνσταντίνο Χατζή για την αφοσίωσή του, πνευματική καθοδήγηση και πατρική αγάπη του, που έχουν κάνει αυτήν την κοινότητα την όμορφη χριστιανική οικογένεια που είναι σήμερα. Peter & Paul Greek Orthodox Church December 2016 / January 2017 Page 4 Church Community Council As we prepare for the Christmas season and the miraculous Birth of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ let us be mindful that a new year is fast approaching and with it the opportunity for new beginnings. This is a time to reflect on both our accomplishments and our shortcomings. This is a time for new visions, new dreams and new endless possibilities. Most importantly it is time to renew our efforts to live a more Christ centered life. Since the Paschal newsletter the Community has been very busy with many activities being organized and executed. After a glorious Holy Week culminating in the joyous and bright Pascha the community came together to prepare for the 36 th annual Greek Food Festival. Although the second day of the festival the weather did not cooperate the festival was still a success because of the record revenues of the first day. Thank you to the organizing committee, the Ladies Philoptochos, all volunteers, and all sponsors for making the Greek Food Festival the success that it was. On June 28th, we celebrated the feast of our patron saints the Holy Apostles Sts. Peter and Paul with a Hierarchical Great Vespers and Divine Liturgy, both led by His Eminence Metropolitan Archbishop Sotirios. Our Community hosted a dinner reception for all visitors and visiting priests from various other communities. The 10th Annual Vacation Church Summer Camp took place in August, under the direction of Presbytera Stamatia Chatzis with many children attending. In September, the beginning of the Ecclesiastical Year, the community came alive with the organization of all our Church Ministries and Programs being offered. This year we added a second GOYA program directed by Sophia and Dan Savvidis. October 28th OXI DAY the Church Community Council hosted a luncheon which featured our intermediate dance group and poems were recited by our youth. On October 16th, the Church Community Council held a General Assembly Meeting following the Divine Liturgy. At this assembly an audit and election committees were formed. I am happy to announce that once again on December 31st, the Community Church Council is hosting a New Year s Eve Gala, to be held at Bingemans in the Grand Ballroom. We invite all of you to come celebrate with us as we usher in the New Year In the spirit of the Nativity of Our Lord and Saviour, I would to give my heartfelt thanks to our Church Community Council who for the last two years have pledged their service to Christ and his Church Community. I would like to thank Mrs. Konstantina Govanis, President of the Ladies Philoptochos and all their members, Our Webmaster, the Chanters, the Choir, the Altar Servers, and all volunteers in the various Church Ministries and Programs. My sincerest appreciation to all our parishioners for their continued support and stewardship commitment. In closing, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Father Konstantine Chatzis. Your dedication, spiritual guidance and fatherly love have made this community into the beautiful Christian family it is today. PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS & EVENTS By the Grace of God and the inspiring leadership and spiritual encouragement from our Priest, Father Konstantine, the Ladies Philoptochos has been spending countless hours planning and organizing events and activities throughout Our goal has always been and continues to be providing support to people in need within our Parish and Community at large, as well as address the ongoing needs of our Church and our Metropolis obligations. Each year, with great love and joy, we help host a variety of events and activities. In February, we held our Annual St. Philothei Luncheon and raised a total of $1,500, all of which was donated to Women s Crisis Services of Waterloo Region, Anselma House. To date, we have donated $5,500 to this very worthy cause. The number of women and children seeking refuge from abusive circumstances continues to increase, sadly. In June, The Ladies Philoptochos, along with the Greek Orthodox Community s support, offered their time and talent towards the ever-popular Greek Food Festival. In November, we focused on preparing for the upcoming Christmas season. This included decorating our annual Tree of Hope, followed by the returning favourite: the Christmas Craft Bake Sale being held on Saturday, December 2nd; all proceeds from this event will go towards St. Mary s Hospital - Cardiac Unit. And as we get closer to Christmas, our charity will extend to families in need by providing gifts of cheer and necessity: Blessed is he who considers the poor; The Lord will deliver him in time of trouble... (Psalm 41:1) In addition to all of these special events, we never cease volunteering our time to visit those who are ill, preparing the coffee and koliva for fellowship offered by families in our church s community in memory of loved ones and raising donations for those the less fortunate. I wish to wholeheartedly thank all members of the Ladies Philoptochos, whose continued support and hard work has made our philanthropic mission a great success. I welcome all the ladies in our Community to become members of the Ladies Philoptochos in the New Year. I pray that we continue to work in peace, love and harmony, all the while facing spiritual and social challenges. May we continue to carry out God s plan with a strong faith and an endless commitment to these charitable works. Sincere wishes for a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year in Christ is Born! The Ladies Philoptochos with Father Konstantine, May 7, 2013 Both our Annual Philoptochos Tree of Hope Gift Drive and Family Sponsorship Program in 2016 have already begun. This year, we have gathered gifts for quite a number of children in need, generously donated by our kind Parishioners, and we are also sponsoring 6 families within our Church Community! Seniors Group s excursion to Vaughan Mills Mall November 10, 2016 ΠΡΟΓΡΑΜΜΑ ΤΡΙΤΗΣ ΗΛΙΚΙΑΣ Με την χάρη και ευλογία του Θεού και την υποστήριξη του πάτερ Κωνσταντίνου, του Εκκλησιαστικού Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου και της Φιλοπτώχου, το Πρόγραμμα της Τρίτης Ηλικίας συνεχίζετε με επιτυχία με την παρουσίαση ποικίλλων θεμάτων και την συμμετοχή σας. Φέτος, το πρόγραμμα ξεκίνησε τον Οκτώβριο με φυσική αγωγή και μια ομιλία σχετικά με την φυσιοθεραπεία. Κατόπιν πραγματοποιήσαμε μια ημερήσια εκδρομή με λεωφορείο στο εμπορικό κέντρο Vaughn Mills. Στην 1η Δεκεμβρίου πραγματοποιήσαμε την Χριστουγεννιάτικη εκδήλωση του προγράμματος μας με ελληνική μουσική, τραγούδι και χορό. Θέλουμε να εκφράσουμε τις ευχαριστίες μας σε όλους τους συμμετέχοντες στο πρόγραμμα της Τρίτης Ηλικίας (Η Φιλία), και για την συνεχή υποστήριξη και αγάπη που έχετε δείξει σε εμάς και στο πρόγραμμα αυτό. Ευχαριστούμε και την κ. Ελένη Δρουμτσέκα που εθελοντικά διευκολύνει την πραγματοποιήση των εκδηλώσεων κάθε μήνα. Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church kicked off to a great start this October with over 60 children registered! What a wonderful turnout!! To register your children or grandchildren, please see one of the Sunday School teachers for a Registration Form or us at sundayschool@stspeterandpaulgoc.ca. This year we are pleased to offer four classes accommodating students from Junior Kindergarten up to Grade eight. ALL OF OUR PARISH'S CHILDREN ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND! We have a wonderful staff of nine teachers, as well as parent volunteers, who have made a commitment to offer their time and talents to nurture and grow our Sunday School program. We thank them wholeheartedly for their efforts and the interest they show in our students. We also wish to express our gratitude to our priest Father Konstantine Chatzis for his continued spiritual guidance and love, as well as to the Church Council and Ladies Philoptochos for their continued support of our Religious Education Program. Sunday School classes will break for the Christmas holidays on Sunday, December 11, 2016 and will resume on Sunday, January 8, We look forward to a wonderful winter semester in the New Year! Presbytera Stamatia Chatzis and Liana Varnava-Wyman, Sunday School Co-Directors Levendogenia Hellenic Greek Dance Our Church s Dance Program cultivates folk traditions of Hellenic culture through dance, music, song and history. In June 2016, we performed at our Greek Food Festival. Over the summer, we performed at London and Ottawa festivals. In the fall, we started our new year and now have over 90 dancers in the program! We have four dance group Primary (Grades 2/3) Junior (Grades 4/5) Intermediate (Grades 6 to 8) and Senior (Grade 9 to University). In October, the Senior Group performed at the October 28th Oxi Day Luncheon. In December, the Primary and Junior Groups performed at the Christmas Pageant. Our dance group, Levendogenia, entertained us with their talented performance, and St. Nicholas arrived to greet smiling faces and hand out gifts for all the children.
