Καὶ οὗτοι πάντες μαρτυρηθέντες διὰ τῆς πίστεως οὐκ ἐκομίσαντο τὴν ἐπαγγελίαν, τοῦ Θεοῦ περὶ ἡμῶν κρεῖττόν τι προβλεψαμένου, ἵνα μὴ χωρὶς ἡμῶν τελειωθῶσι. Brethren, by faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, choosing rather to share ill-treatment with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, received promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign enemies to flight. Women received their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and scourging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, ill-treated of whom the world was not worthy wandering over deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. And all these, though well attested by their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had foreseen something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect. At that time, Jesus decided to go to Galilee. And he found Philip and said to him, "Follow me." Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael, and he said to him, "We have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see." Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said of him, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!" Nathanael said to him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the son of God! You are the King of Israel!" Jesus answered him, "Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You shall see greater things than these." And he said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man." God created man out of visible and invisible nature with his own hands according to the image and likeness, forming the body from the earth and through his own breathing upon it giving it a rational and intellectual soul, which we call the divine image. That which is according to the image is manifest in the intellect and free will. That which is according to the likeness is manifest in such likeness in virtue as is possible. St. John of Damascus

5 Aʹ Κυριακὴ τῶν Νηστειῶν (τῆς Ὀρθοδοξίας) Λέγεται Κυριακή της Ορθοδοξίας, γιατί γιορτάζουμε την αναστήλωση των αγίων Εικόνων και τον θρίαμβο της Ορθοδόξου Πίστεως κατά της φοβερής αιρέσεως των Εικονομάχων, των αιρετικών δηλαδή εκείνων που δεν εδέχοντο να τιμούν τις άγιες Εικόνες. Το «Ωρολόγιο» της Εκκλησίας γράφει: Για εκατό και πλέον χρόνια διαταράχθηκε η Εκκλησία με διωγμούς από κακοδόξους εικονομάχους. Πρώτος υπήρξε ο αυτοκράτορας Λέων ο Ίσαυρος και τελευταίος ο Θεόφιλος, άνδρας της Αγίας Θεοδώρας, η οποία μετά το θάνατο του συζύγου της ανέλαβε την εξουσία και στερέωσε πάλι την Ορθοδοξία μαζί με τον Πατριάρχη 5 Μαρτίου Μεθόδιο. Η Βασίλισσα Θεοδώρα διακήρυξε δημόσια ότι ασπαζόμεθα τις Εικόνες, όχι λατρευτικά, ούτε ως Θεούς, αλλά ως εικόνες των αρχετύπων. Την πρώτη Κυριακή των νηστειών το έτος 843, η Θεοδώρα μαζί με το γιό της αυτοκράτορα Μιχαήλ, λιτάνευσαν και ανεστήλωσαν τις άγιες εικόνες μαζί με τον κλήρο και το λαό. Από τότε εορτάζουμε κάθε χρόνο την ανάμνηση αυτού του γεγονότος γιατί καθορίσθηκε οριστικά ότι δεν λατρεύουμε τις Εικόνες, αλλά τιμούμε και δοξάζουμε όλους τους Αγίους που εικονίζουν και λατρεύουμε μόνο τον εν Τριάδι Θεό. Τον Πατέρα, τον Υιό και το Άγιο Πνεύμα και κανένα άλλο είτε Άγιο είτε Άγγελο.

18 Announcements WELCOME TO ALL VISITORS: For those visiting an Orthodox Church for the first time, please be aware that Holy Communion is a sign of unity of faith which is only offered to Baptized or Chrismated Orthodox Christians. All present are welcome, however, to partake of the antidoro (blessed bread) which is distributed at the end of the service. Those interested in learning more about the Orthodox Christian faith, please feel free to see Fr. Demetri after the service. This week, to assist you in the Narthex we have at the Pangary: Charlie Eliopoulos, Maria Theodore; Greeter: Mary Cleary; Ushers: Ellen Marie Demeter, George Fountas, Mary Hanna, Chris Karimbakas. MEMORIALS: Memorial service is offered today for the repose of the soul of Vasilios Theodore (34 years). Memorial prayers are offered for the repose of the soul of Charles Dukas. May their memory be eternal! Altar flowers are offered in memory of Vasilios Theodore by his family. Please join us for fellowship immediately following the Liturgy in the Anastasia and Spiro Davis Hall. The fellowship hour will be offered in memory of Vasilios Theodore by his family. SUNDAY OF ORTHODOXY: Today, is the Sunday of Orthodoxy, the first Sunday of Lent. We will commemorate the return of the icons to the church. Our Sunday School children will stay upstairs to participate in the procession with a family icon. PRESANCTIFIED LITURGY: The second Presanctified Liturgy will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 8 at the Cathedral Chapel at 6:00 pm. This week we will host neighboring parishes. Following the Liturgy we will have a Lenten Meal and a Lenten Lecture sponsored by our Ladies Philoptochos. SALUTATIONS: The Second Salutation Service will be celebrated on Friday, March 10 at 7:00 pm at the Cathedral. Join us as we celebrate the Annunciation on the first five Friday s of Lent. ANNUNCIATION CATHEDRAL AND THE BOSTON HOMELESS VETERANS: The next service day at the Homeless Veterans Shelter is on Monday, March 20 at 4:15 pm. All volunteers are welcome. Donations are needed for the expense of the meal. Please contact Mr. Peter Vergados, coordinator of this ministry to become involved with this worthy endeavor. His number is: FEAST OF THE ANNUNCIATION: On Friday, March 24 at 7:00 pm, our Annunciation Cathedral will celebrate our Feast Day Vespers at 7:00 pm. Our Ladies Philoptochos will sponsor a reception following the Vespers. On Saturday, March 25, Orthros will start at 8:45 am followed by the Divine Liturgy at which His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios will preside. BOOKSTORE: In our bookstore you will find cards, icons and books for every age and occasion. The manager of the bookstore Ms. Vasilika Tsucalas will help you and gladly accept your orders. ΚΥΡΙΑΚΗ ΤΗΣ ΟΡΘΟΔΟΞΙΑΣ: Σήμερα, πρώτη Κυριακή της Σαρακοστής εορτάζουμε την επιστροφή των εικόνων στην εκκλησία μετά την περίοδο της εικονομαχίας. Τα παιδιά του Κατηχητικού Σχολείου θα συμμετάσχουν στον εορτασμό, κρατώντας μία εικόνα κατά τη διάρκεια της πομπής. ΠΡΟΗΓΙΑΣΜΕΝΗ ΘΕΙΑ ΛΕΙΤΟΥΡΓΙΑ: Η δεύτερη Προηγιασμένη Θεία Λειτουργία θα εορταστεί την Τετάρτη, 8 Μαρτίου στο Παρεκκλήσι του Καθεδρικού Ναού στο Μπρουκλάϊν, στις 6:00 μμ. Μετά τη Θεία Λειτουργία θα έχουμε ένα Νηστίσιμο γεύμα και αμέσως μετά θα ακολουθήσει Διάλεξη για τη νηστεία. ΧΑΙΡΕΤΙΣΜΟΙ: Η ακολουθία για τους Δεύτερους Χαιρετισμούς θα γίνει την Παρασκευή, 10 Μαρτίου στις 7:00 μμ στον Καθεδρικό Ναό. ΠΡΟΓΡΑΜΜΑ ΚΑΘΕΔΡΙΚΟΥ ΓΙΑ ΤΟΥΣ ΑΣΤΕΓΟΥΣ ΒΕΤΕΡΑΝΟΥΣ ΒΟΣΤΩΝΗΣ: Το επόμενο γεύμα για τους Άστεγους Βετεράνους της Βοστώνης είναι τη Δευτέρα, 20 Μαρτίου στις 16:15 μμ. Όλοι οι εθελοντές είναι ευπρόσδεκτοι. Χρειαζόμαστε τη προσφορά σας για τα έξοδα των μηνιαίων γευμάτων.
