From August 1 through the 14 Orthodox faithful fast in the same way as they do during Great Lent. They abstain from meats, fish, dairy, and alcohol and then celebrate the Feast Day on August 15. The Church, however, does not reduce seasons of fasting to mere dieting. With these fasting seasons, the Orthodox Christian is encouraged to prepare himself/herself spiritually, as well as physically, and to spend more time in prayer and in personal Bible study. To help in this matter, the Church offers the service of the Paraklesis a Supplicatory Prayer Service, in this instance to the Panagia. Faithful seek her intercessions to her Son and our God Jesus. Many people question why we Orthodox turn to the Saints in prayer. Be clear in your understanding that we are not praying to the Saints asking for their intervention but rather asking for God s response through the prayer of the Saints or the Blessed Mother. If a person has a need for which prayers are offered, he/she might turn to a friend or relative and ask them to pray as well. This is the same intention that one has when asking the Saints or the Panagia to pray for us. We seek their intercessions to God in prayer. Join us in prayer at the Paraklesis Services during the Dekapentavgoustos Fast, otherwise known as the Dormition Fast or the Panagia Fast. CHOIR PRACTICE SCHEDULE In preparation for the 150th Celebration of the Cathedral, the choir is holding rehearsals every Saturday between 10:00 am and 11:30 am from now until October. Yesterday, the group enjoyed working on new music and invite you to join them. Your participation is needed. If interested, call Alex Tiliakos at or simply come to practice. COMPREHENSIVE REGISTRATION FORMS The enclosed Comprehensive Registration Forms are due Sunday, August 24. SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS NEEDED Sunday School will resume on Sunday, September 7. However, before the program begins, three new teachers are needed for grades 5-6, 7-8, and If you are interested in filling one of the positions, please contact Director Patrick Latour at patlat@att.net or the Cathedral office. A Sunday School organizational meeting will be held after Divine Liturgy next Sunday, August 10, in the boardroom. Last year s and this year s staffs, as well as all new teachers, are asked to attend.

THE EPISTLE I Corinthians 1:10-17 BRETHREN, I appeal to you by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree and that there be no dissensions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is quarreling among you, my brethren. What I mean is that each one of you says, "I belong to Paul," or "I belong to Apollos," or "I belong to Cephas," or "I belong to Christ." Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispos and Gaius; lest any one should say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized any one else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. THE GOSPEL Matthew 14:14-22 At that time, Jesus saw a great throng; and he had compassion on them, and healed their sick. When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a lonely place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves." Jesus said, "They need not go away; you give them something to eat." They said to him, "We have only five loaves here and two fish." And he said, "Bring them here to me." Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass; and taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke and gave the loaves to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. Then he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.
