2 Message from Father George MAJOR CHRISTIAN ANNOUNCEMENT IN NEW ORLEANS A few months ago the Archdiocese requested that I represent Archbishop Demetrios and the Archdiocese at an event to which he was invited here in New Orleans. It was the triennial gathering of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA). Obviously, since the Archbishop s schedule is quite full with national and international Orthodox Church events and since our Metropolitan Alexios was out of the country, I was asked to represent the Archbishop. It was certainly an honor. The ELCA event, equivalent to our Clergy-Laity Congress, was held at the Convention Center downtown. Among the regular reports and presentations necessary to operate the business of the ELCA, there was one presentation that turned out to be the impetus for the presence of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese s representative. Since 1965 the Lutheran Church and the Roman Catholic Church have been communicating on issues that have existed between the two communions since the Protestant schism from the Roman Catholic Church initiated by Martin Luther and continued by John Calvin, Huldrych Zwingli, and other early Protestant Reformers in 16th century Europe. The combined committee of bishops, priests, pastors, and theologians from both communions have drawn up a document called Declaration on the Way, which was presented to the ELCA Assembly and was overwhelmingly accepted by a vote of the over one-thousand delegates present. This document is merely an invitation for the ELCA and the Roman Catholic Church to meet together at their yearly Week of Prayer for Christian Unity events and pray together, combine resources for creating educational materials, encourage joint Bible studies, and continue to encourage the two churches to work together to care for the spiritual, emotional, and physical needs in their communities. The reception of the document DOES NOT accept the inter-communion of the two churches, and, therefore, the study of the understanding of the Eucharist continues. It also DOES NOT mean that the Roman Catholic Church accepted, or for that matter ever will accept, the ELCA practice of female clergy in the role of bishop and/or priest-pastor. The document is a reminder that these two churches are seeking to one day be in union/communion with each other. But, there is much more to be discussed before that can happen. Because the Orthodox Church enjoys a direct line of Apostolic Succession and is the continuous expression of the Christian experience of the Ancient Church, our presence was requested to observe this major decision of two religious bodies here in the United States. The Orthodox Christian presence in no way suggests that the Orthodox Church has had any role in the consultations and deliberations that led to this document and subsequently its acceptance by the ELCA. We were present merely to honor the request of the Mother Church and to pray that one day there may be unity among all Christians EPIPHANY MEETING - AUGUST 30 Volunteers, who previously worked on the annual Epiphany event, and those, who would like to help with the 2017 Epiphany Celebration scheduled Sunday, January 8, 2017, are asked to attend a preparation meeting on Tuesday, August 30, at 7:00 pm at the Hellenic Center. If you cannot attend the meeting but wish to help or to serve on a committee, please advise the Cathedral office so that you can be contacted about upcoming meetings. THE EPISTLE I Corinthians 1:10-17 BRETHREN, I appeal to you by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree and that there be no dissensions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is quarreling among you, my brethren. What I mean is that each one of you says, "I belong to Paul," or "I belong to Apollos," or "I belong to Cephas," or "I belong to Christ." Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispos and Gaius; lest any one should say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized any one else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. THE GOSPEL Matthew 14:14-22 At that time, Jesus saw a great throng; and he had compassion on them, and healed their sick. When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a lonely place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves." Jesus said, "They need not go away; you give them something to eat." They said to him, "We have only five loaves here and two fish." And he said, "Bring them here to me." Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass; and taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke and gave the loaves to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. Then he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.
