2 Dear Members, Friends, and Supporters of the National Hellenic Student Association, We are proud to welcome you to the 2009 NHSA Fall Convention at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor. We are proud not only for the organization of the event, but mostly for seeing that the common efforts of several Hellenic Associations have created a unique dynamic that is making the NHSA a growing Association with unprecedented potential, strong and capable enough to follow the mission that we serve. For the member associations of NHSA refer to p3 We don t want to be repetitive over what our list of goals is. You can find everything in our press reports our website: Moreover, you can realize our devotion to These goals through our activities in multiple fields of interests (see Activity tab on p.4) What we are going to insist on is that the Association is making its first steps into establishing the mechanism that will allow it to continue existing. And it is now that we are realizing how broad and critical the scope that we serve is. Since we are also now establishing our Identity, we feel that there is one thing we, the young Hellenic generation in the American Universities, are sure about: We are carriers of the Hellenism and Παιδεία (Εducation); two identical concepts for us. We, every single member of the NHSA, are responsible for maintaining this heritage and developing it even further in order to move forward, broaden our scope, always without missing our Principles and the Purpose we are here to serve. But what does moving forward mean for us? It is critical for us to create the circumstances for this Association to use all the available knowledge, the experience, the technology, the spirit of innovation and the networking effect that lie within and outside our academic communities and create the platform for a lean organization that knows how to learn, how to allocate all these priceless resources. This is the only way to secure our continuity, that we keep everyone on board and the only way to feel confident that we offer everyone equal opportunities to give and take from our Association, a National Association that consists of under and post graduate students, faculty and people from the academia of the most prominent institutions in the world. It is up to us to share and take advantage of these excellent resources in order to make the National Hellenic Student Association (NHSA) of America the Organization that we have dreamed about. 3 Αγαπητά Μέλη, Αγαπητοί Φίλοι και Υποστηρικτές του National Hellenic Student Association (NHSA), Είμαστε περήφανοι που έφτασε η στιγμή να σας καλωσορίζουμε στο 2009 NHSA Fall Convention, το πρώτο Συνέδριο της Παναμερικανικής Ένωσης Ελλήνων Φοιτητών για αυτή την ακαδημαϊκή χρονιά, στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Μίσιγκαν (University of Michigan). Είμαστε περήφανοι όχι μόνο για τη διοργάνωση αυτού του ξεχωριστού για εμάς Συνεδρίου, αλλά και για το ότι διαπιστώνουμε πως οι κοινές προσπάθειες πολλών διαφορετικών Ελληνικών Φοιτητικών Συνδέσμων δημιούργησαν μια μοναδική δυναμική. Αυτή έχει καταστήσει το NHSA ένα γοργα αναπτυσσόμενο (δείτε τους Συλλόγους-Μέλη του Οργανισμού μέχρις στιγμής στη σελίδα 3) οργανισμό, ο οποίος πέρα από τις εξαιρετικές προοπτικές διεύρυνσής του, είναι αρκετά συμπαγής ώστε να υπηρετεί την αποστολή του χωρίς αποκλίσεις, όσο ευρύ κι αν ειναι το φάσμα δραστηριοποιησης του. Δε θέλουμε να επαναλαμβανόμαστε σχετικά με τους στόχους και τις προθέσεις μας, μιας και μπορειτε να βρείτε τα πάντα γύρω από αυτά στα Press Reports που έχουμε στην ιστοσελίδα μας: Την αφοσίωσή μας σ αυτούς τους στόχους αποδυκνείουν άλλωστε και η δραστηριότητά μας και οι πράξεις μας (βλέπε σελίδα 4, Activity tab). Σε αυτό που επίμένουμε πάντως είναι ότι ο Οργανισμός μας αν και έχει έξοχες προοπτικές, βρίσκεται ακόμα σε βρεφικό στάδιο ως οργάνωση, αλλά και ως προς την αναζήτηση ταυτότητας. Τώρα αρχίζουμε και αντιλαμβανόμαστε την ευρύτητα και την κρισιμότητα της αποστολής που καλούμαστε να υπηρετήσουμε και αισθανόμαστε ολοένα και περισσότερο ότι για ένα μόνο πράγμα μπορουμε να είμαστε σίγουροι ως η νέα Ελληνική γενιά των Αμερικανικών Πανεπιστημιων Οτι είμαστε οι Φορείς του Ελληνισμού και της Παιδείας, φορείς δύο εννοιών ταυτόσημων για εμάς. Έτσι, εμείς. όλα τα μέλη του NHSA είμαστε υπεύθυνοι να διατηρήσουμε αυτή τη βαριά κληρονομιάκαι να την εξελίξουμε ακόμη παραπάνω για να «προχωρήσουμε» ως Οργανισμός και να αναπτυχθούμε, χωρίς την παραμικρή απόκλιση από τις αρχές και τις αξίες μας. Αλλά τί σημαίνει «προχωρώ» για εμάς υπό τις παρούσες συγκυρίες? Είναι μοναδικής σημασίας για εμάς να δημιουργήσουμε τις προϋποθέσεις προκειμένου το NHSA να χρησιμοποιήσει όποια διαθέσιμη γνώση, εμπειρία, νέα τεχνολογία, πνεύμα καινοτομίας και όποια διασύνδεση έχει ο καθένας μας μέσα ή έξω από τις ακαδημαϊκές μας κοινότητες. Και με αυτο το υλικό να δημιουργήσουμε το»πλαίσιο» ή την πλατφόρμα εκείνη που θα μας επιτρέψει να είμαστε ένας αποτελεσματικός όμιλος ομάδων που ξέρουν να συνεργάζονται, να μοιράζονται και να κερδίζουν απο μια τέτοια μοιρασιά. Μόνο με τη δίκαιη κατανομή των «πηγών»της γνώσης και της εμπειρίας θα εξασφαλίσουμε την Συνέχεια της προσπάθειας και θα κάνουμε και το τελευταίο μας μέλος, αλλά και τον οποιονδήποτε, ικανό να δώσει και να πάρει από το NHSA. Και βέβαια επιδιώκουμε τη δημιουργία μιας τέτοιας ανοικτης κοινότητας κατανοώντας πως είναι ο μόνος τρόπος να εκμεταλλευτούμε τον πλούτο που βρίσκεται εδώ που δραστηριοποιούμαστε, στα καλύτερα Πανεπιστήμια του κόσμου. Εάν όλοι εμείς προπτυχιακοί, μεταπτυχιακοί φοιτητές και διδακτικό προσωπικό αποφασίσουμε να ξεπεράσουμε τα όποια στεγανά μας περιορίζουν τότε θα είμαστε στην θέση αξιοποιήσουμε όλα αυτά που μπορουν να κάνουν το NHSA of America τον Οργανισμό που ονειρευόμαστε.. 5 Activity tab Our mission is to develop a central body of representation for all Hellenic Student Associations of America, which provides dynamic opportunities and promotes large-scale activities. We serve as the premiere formal Association for all Hellenic Student Associations around the US. We make it possible for any of our members to take advantage of the synergies created through the broad network that our Association has already established and get involved in the national level activities and programs. Find sources to fund the NHSA, which enables the organization to be financially and functionally autonomous and allows us to act independently toward the objectives and goals of our mission. Organize, as the umbrella association, a variety of events and workshops along with the local HSAs. Entrepreneurship events that allow the students to get exposed to Hellenic corporations and individuals in the US and in Greece and create potential for funding and product development for new ideas. Political Affairs events that keep the Members and their communities informed about current political issues and play a role of raising awareness about the Hellenic issues in the American Universities and in the US in general. Networking events through the local HSAs. Parties and dances for fundraising purposes and..for fun! Support Hellenic Studies in American Universities;Raise awareness about the importance of the Greek Language (modern and ancient) and History in American Universities and signed petitions over the cease of Hellenic Courses in Universities; Promote the Study Abroad Programs in Greece. Support and take organizational responsibility for Hellenic cultural ventures e.g. The Trojan Women theatrical production across the U.S.A. Aid individual Hellenic Associations in maintaining a standard for methods and procedures internally and on the larger-scale university level. Promote relations not only among the members of the Hellenic Student Associations, but also with members of academic communities both Greek and non-greek. Create the basis for an Alumni Association that will help NHSA Members with business contacts, current work conditions, and the Job Market in Greece and ensures continuous contact with the Universities and the NHSA itself. There are several more programs in the pipeline. Get your Organization on board and take advantage of this new scenery! 4

6 The new scenery Through NHSA, the individual Associations are given the opportunity to scale up their existing programs and events to the national level, but also take initiatives that they couldn t take before without the opportunities that have been created and arisen through the National Association. There are already many characteristic examples that are indicative of the new scenery for the members of the NHSA. The Hellenic Association at Stanford, in cooperation with the NHSA, held an event on May 2-3, 2009 that goes far beyond the scope and the boundaries of an individual Hellenic Association. Bridging the Gap: Entrepreneurship in Greece and Synergies with Silicon Valley was a magnificent event about mostly Hellenic technology corporations and Venture Capitalists that presented their failures and their success stories in building their brands in the US or with US capital. The NHSA is responsible for the continuity of these workshop events. This means that in this case there will be a series of workshops and next time the NHSA will assign a different community/association to run the second workshop, most likely, at a different University. The Hellenic Association at Stanford has made this wonderful beginning and now through the NHSA of America we are able to make it happen again without missing the experience earned and the efforts made by the first event organizers. Of course, we realize that there are Associations with more resources than others and it is a challenge for us to make these resources available to all the associations of our Organization. In this case, the NHSA informed all of its members about the event and the Stanford Hellenic Association members made it possible for any member to participate in this unique learning and networking opportunity through online streaming. Another example was a Political Affairs event at the Ohio State University with Mr. Larigakis from the American Hellenic Institute (AHI) as the guest speaker and topic: The Hellenic-American Relations in the new political scenery. How the Hellenic Community can impact the American Foreign Policy. The members of the Ohio State University Association realized that they were able through our broader network to invite guest speakers, support, organize events-not only the usual social ones- on modern topics and have the confidence and the experience from other universities to argue (and secure funding from the university) that Hellenic Political Affairs are indeed a hot topic. These events can also get advertised through the NHSA and there is now a synergistic effect that was not the case earlier. 7 NHSA Convention Fall 2009 Agenda The NHSA Convention Fall 2009 will mark the first assembly of our member HSAs since the reestablishment of the organization during March In addition, the convention will mark the first opportunity for the new member-hsas to be represented and get acclimated in the NHSA workings. The goal of this convention will be to increase and strengthen the bonds between our member HSAs during the early stages of the organization s establishment. In addition, the convention will enhance the promotion and preservation of our culture in a time where the fading of our identity amongst our youngest generations is eminent. Problem: This era marks about 100 years since the first immigration wave. During the early years of the Greek existence in the USA, the Greek community was very homogeneous (same age, educational level, practice of religion, etc). The community established several institutions in order to preserve its culture, identity, and traditions. Today, after the passing of generations and the constant addition of more immigrants, the Greek community has become extremely diverse. This all happens in an era where the technological advancements have made exchange of information and traveling very easy. However, is the need for preserving our identity as eminent as 100 years ago? Have the mechanisms put in place by the first Greek settlers (institutions) evolved to meet the challenges the current generation s diversity presents? As the settlers change from immigrants to citizens, do they romanticize about Greece as the Old Country? Should the Hellenic community focus upon culture or try to get politically active? Discussion: With and introduction by the University of Michigan s Modern Greek department, the NHSA Convention will hold discussions with the following topics: A. diversity of our generation and importance of preserving our identity, B. investigating Hellenic Institutions in the USA and how they affect our generation, C. relationships with and views of Greece within our generation. 6

11 What We Do From our Hellenic House headquarters, just steps from the White House, AHI s professional staff works with legislators, the Department of State, the diplomatic corps, and educational institutions to advance the best interests of the U.S. on issues of importance to Greek Americans. Each year, AHI initiates congressional legislation, issues policy statements, and serves as an effective watchdog on issues affecting U.S. relations in Southeastern Europe. Key issues have included ending the illegal occupation of Cyprus, the treatment of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, aggression in the Aegean Sea, and the U.S. s response to the dispute between Greece and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) over the latter nation s name. While U.S. public policy is fundamentally important to AHI, so is the Greek American community. AHI is its public policy standard-bearer not just on Capitol Hill but in the nation-at-large. Each spring, AHI s gala Hellenic Heritage Achievement and National Public Service Awards Dinner honors the best and brightest in the Greek American community and beyond for achievements in public service, business, education, science, and the arts. AHI s conference on The Future of Hellenism in America, held each year at different locations around the country, is a traveling symposium on the evolving Greek American community. The AHI Business Network unites professionals for networking and educational exchanges. Student Programs Apart from being active in the Universities-the most recent action was that the AHI Executive Director accepted the NHSA invitation and gave a lecture at OSU to the Greek Community of Columbus- within 2009 the American Hellenic Institute Foundation (AHIF) sponsored a group of nine Greek American college students for the inaugural AHIF College Student Foreign Policy Study Trip to Greece and Cyprus. This new program aims to introducing future Greek American leaders to the core foreign policy issues important to the Greek American community and their impact on U.S. interests in the Southeastern Mediterranean region. The trip began with briefings in Washington from June 25 to 26, followed by a series of activities and briefings in Cyprus (June 27 to July 2) and Athens (July 3-9). 12 Our Mission Hellenic Business Network (HBN) is an independent non-profit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization established in 1998 and based in Boston, Massachusetts. Our goal is to mobilize and utilize the expertise and resources available within our community that will influence and advance the long-term professional interests of all Hellenes and Philhellenes. Our approach is to provide a common forum for fostering and promoting the professional interests of all Hellenes through education, networking, industry specific initiatives, continuous professional development and public relations initiatives. Throughout the year, HBN conducts networking symposia, professional development programs, cultural activities and membership development initiatives designed to provide opportunities for sharing information about Hellenic professional and entrepreneurial activities, exchanging ideas and experiences, and learning new methods and approaches from experts and colleagues. Our emphasis is on continuous professional education and advancement, and leadership by example. Ways to get involved HBN seeks to expand the services it offers in order to reach more Hellenes. The first way to become involved with HBN is by becoming a member. In addition to the benefits of membership, you will have numerous opportunities to volunteer on our member committees and other initiatives. Through these groups, members help HBN shape issues and accomplish goals important for the membership and the community at large. Members benefit by expanding their business contacts and forming long-term client relationships. The HBN Big Idea Competition (HBN-BIC) The Hellenic Business Network Big Idea Competition (HBN-BIC) is an entrepreneurship competition where participants translate their business ideas into viable business plans and create enterprises. State St. Ann Arbor, MI phone (734) , fax (734) Our Story MODERN GREEK began at the University of Michigan in the Department of Classical Studies of the College of Literature, Science, and Arts in September The Foundation for Modern Greek Studies, a dynamic, progressive, grass-roots Greek American organization established in Michigan, undertook to raise $750,000.When the Foundation met its first fundraising goal, the University upgraded the existing position to an endowed Professorship as it broadened its commitment to modern Greek. The endowing of the professorship meant that the University committed itself to offering modern Greek for as long as the University survives. Today the endowed Professorship in Modern Greek, named after world famous poet C. P. Cavafy, and the interdisciplinary program in Modern Greek Studies offers courses for undergraduate and graduate students, and regular events for students, faculty, and the broader community. Our Mission TEACHING is the first, essential component of our mission. Our courses explore the Greek world from late antiquity to the present, with special emphasis on Greek society of the past 200 years. We offer classes in Greek on language, literature, and culture; classes in English introducing students to Greek culture, travel literature about Greece, Greek literature in translation, and diaspora experiences including the Greek American. RESEARCH is the second component. When it comes to the comprehensive study of Hellenism in all its length and variety, the University of Michigan faculty excel above others. We pursue our own scholarly research, actively participate in conferences, serve as editors and on editorial boards of journals, and regularly publish our work. EVENTS are the third component. Each year we organize lectures, roundtable discussions, film screenings, and readings of Greek literature in a variety of venues, including amphitheaters, libraries, museums, and bookstores. Our audiences includes not just students and faculty, but people of all ages from the surrounding community. COLLECTIONS are the fourth component. What is a research institution without documents, newspapers, films, archives? The University Library has budgeted a significant amount of money annually for purchasing books and other materials to develop a collection of modern Greek sources and add to an already rich collection of English language 12 books on Greek society, history, and the arts.

14 The Olympic Society is a philanthropic and cultural society open to all who embody the Hellenic Ideals and is based in Columbus, Ohio. The Society has launched scholarship programs and has aided many organizations and individuals in the greater Columbus area and follows a full schedule of activities per year, with theatrical productions, lectures and symposia. The Olympic Society has showed remarkable sensitivity to the students efforts and it has supported and co-organized several events and activities with the Hellenic Student Association at OSU. The NHSA recognizes that the Society pays a lot of attention to the continuity of their efforts. Following this mentality they only support projects that have the potential to last in time and it makes us proud having cooperated with them several times. 13

15 A Culture, Trade, Communication, and Networking forum for Greek American, American and Southeastern European businesses 14

16 the U-M International Center (IC) at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor Welcome to the U-M International Center (IC), the University of Michigan, and Ann Arbor. It is our hope that you will achieve both your academic and personal goals through the guidance and assistance provided by the IC for international students and scholars, and domestic students. The IC provides advice, information and referrals on matters such as immigration regulations, cultural adjustment, employment, overseas travel and study, volunteer work, and international careers. The IC staff cares deeply about those who come to campus from other countries, and we are equally invested in those who wish to study and work abroad. As part of our overall mission, the IC advocates for international education as a campus-wide and national priority. Our staff communicates with elected and appointed officials, public and private organizations, and colleagues at other institutions to promote and facilitate international exchange. We provide a voice on proposed federal legislation affecting international educational exchange, and we support and advocate for students and scholars in the U.S. and abroad. The culture of the IC is shaped by a sincere desire to work as partners with all members of the U-M community to help those we are charged to serve. The Hellenic Society Paideia, an Organization that was established in 1974 at the University of Connecticut, as a student organization, initiated this program. In 1977 Paideia was incorporated in Connecticut as an educational non-profit organization open to all. "Paideia" started to address Study Abroad Program with an Interdisciplinary Programs for Hellenic Studies. 20 Last but not least We owe special thanks to the Hellenic Student Association of the University of Michigan that took the great responsibility to host the Convention and take care of the logistics. We thank the members of our Advisory Board that is still growing with faculty and people from the academia from different Universities And of course the Hellenic Associations that apart from their organizational efforts, contributed financially to the Convention. Lastly, there have been a lot of people since our beginning that have contributed in many ways to make this organization strong enough to make an impact on our communities.
