NICHOLAS CHURCH OF THE WTC ΝΑΟΣ ΑΓΙΟΥ ΝΙΚΟΛΑΟΥ ΤΟΥ WTC Third Tone-3rd Morning Gospel /Ήχος Γ Εωθινόν Γ *********************************************************************************** The Sunday of Forgiveness, the last of the preparatory Sundays before Great Lent, has two themes: it commemorates Adam s expulsion from Paradise, and it accentuates our need for forgiveness. There are obvious reasons why these two things should be brought to our attention as we stand on the threshold of Great Lent. One of the primary images in the Triodion is that of the return to Paradise. Lent is a time when we weep with Adam and Eve before the closed gate of Eden, repenting with them for the sins that have deprived us of our free communion with God. But Lent is also a time when we are preparing to celebrate the saving event of Christ s death and rising, which has reopened Paradise to us once more (Luke 23:43). So sorrow for our exile in sin is tempered by hope of our re-entry into Paradise.The second theme, that of forgiveness, is emphasized in the Gospel reading for this Sunday (Matthew 6:14-21) and in the special ceremony of mutual forgiveness at the end of the Vespers on Sunday evening. Before we enter the Lenten fast, we are reminded that there can be no true fast, no genuine repentance, no reconciliation with God, unless we are at the same time reconciled with one another. A fast without mutual love is the fast of demons. We do not travel the road of Lent as isolated individuals but as members of a family. Our asceticism and fasting should not separate us from others, but should link us to them with ever-stronger bonds.the Sunday of Forgiveness also directs us to see that Great Lent is a journey of liberation from our enslavement to sin. The Gospel lesson sets the conditions for this liberation. The first one is fasting the refusal to accept the desires and urges of our fallen nature as normal, the effort to free ourselves from the dictatorship of the flesh and matter over the spirit. To be effective, however, our fast must not be hypocritical, a showing off. We must appear not unto men to fast but to our Father who is in secret (vv ).The second condition is forgiveness If you forgive men their trespasses, your Heavenly Father will also forgive you (vv ). The triumph of sin, the main sign of its rule over the world, is division, opposition, separation, hatred. Therefore, the first break through this fortress of sin is forgiveness the return to unity, solidarity, love. To forgive is to put between me and my enemy the radiant forgiveness of God Himself. To forgive is to reject the hopeless dead-ends of human relations and to refer them to Christ. Forgiveness is truly a breakthrough of the Kingdom into this sinful and fallen world. The icon of the Sunday of the Last Judgment incorporates all of the elements of the parable from Matthew 25: Christ sits on the throne and before him the Last Judgment takes place. He is extending his hands in blessing upon the Theotokos on his right, and John the Baptist on his left. Seated on smaller thrones are the Apostles, represented by Peter and Paul, a depiction of the words of Christ in Matthew 19:28. (1.) The icon shows Adam and Eve standing before Jesus Christ [1.]. Prior to their descent into sin through disobedience, Adam and Eve were blessed with a beautiful relationship of communion and fellowship with God. However, they were tempted by the devil appearing in the form of a serpent [2.] to disobey God and eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:15-17). When they took of the fruit and sinned, they realized that they were naked. Further, when they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden they hid themselves from the presence of the Lord (3:8). The icon shows Adam and Eve attempting to cover themselves with fig leaves as they try to hide, and yet they stand ashamed before the Lord. Because of their disobedience the Lord expelled them from the garden. The icon shows the Archangel of the Lord directing them out of Paradise, through the gate of Eden where God placed the cherubim and a sword flaming and guarding the way to the tree of life (3:23-24) [3.]. Adam and Eve are dressed in the garments of skins made for them by God (3:20) [4.].

Μάθε να συγχωρείς Μια συμφωνία κάνει στο σημερινό ιερό Ευαγγέλιο ο Κύριος με όλους τους πιστούς. Εάν συγχωρούμε τους ανθρώπους για τα αμαρτήματα που μας έχουν κάνει, μας λέει, και ο ουράνιος Πατέρας μας θα συγχωρήσει και τα δικά μας αμαρτήματα. Εάν όμως δεν τους συγχωρούμε, τότε ούτε ο Πατέρας μας θα συγχωρήσει τις αμαρτίες μας.γιατί όμως ο Κύριος κάνει αυτήν την απαράβατη συνθήκη; Γιατί θέτει τη δική μας συγχωρητικότητα ως προϋπόθεση της δικής μας συγχωρήσεως και σωτηρίας; Γιατί αρνείται να μας βάλει στον Παράδεισο, εάν εμείς δεν συγχωρούμε όσους μας αδίκησαν;διότι θέλει να μας δείξει πόσο μεγάλη αρετή είναι η συγχωρητικότητα αρετή η οποία μας εξομοιώνει με τον Θεό, ο Οποίος είναι πολυέλεος, συγχωρεί καθημερινά τα αμέτρητα αμαρτήματά μας. Ζητά λοιπόν από εμάς να Του μοιάσουμε, να κάνουμε ό,τι κάνει διαρκώς Εκείνος. Όπως Εκείνος συγχωρεί καθημερινά όλους μας και συγχώρησε επάνω στο Σταυρό του ακόμη και τους σταυρωτές του, ζητεί να ακολουθήσουμε κι εμείς το δικό του παράδειγμα. Να συγχωρούμε τα αμαρτήματα των άλλων. Όσο μεγάλα κι αν μας φαίνονται, όσο κι αν μας έχουν πικράνει. Κατανοώντας μάλιστα ότι αυτά στην πραγματικότητα είναι πολύ μικρά και ασήμαντα, αν συγκριθούν με τις τόσο πολλές δικές μας αμαρτίες προς τον Θεό.Ο Κύριος ζητεί επιπλέον ως όρο της σωτηρίας μας τη συγχωρητικότητα, διότι χωρίς αυτήν δεν μπορούμε να ζήσουμε ούτε σ αυτή τη ζωή. Χωρίς συγχωρητικότητα η ζωή μας γίνεται κόλαση, αφαιρεί την ειρήνη από μέσα μας, κάνει τη ζωή μας ένα δράμα.τέλος ο Κύριος μας ζητεί να συγχωρούμε, διότι εάν εδώ στη γη δεν μπορούμε να συγχωρέσουμε τους αδελφούς μας, δηλαδή να τους χωρέσουμε στην καρδιά μας, τι θα κάνουμε στην άλλη ζωή; Πώς θα αντέχουμε εκεί ο ένας τον άλλον; Θα έχουμε κακία και μνησικακία και μέσα στον Παράδεισο; Αλλά τότε θα γίνει ο Παράδεισος κόλαση! Μας λέει λοιπόν ο Θεός: Εάν θέλετε να χωρέσετε στον Παράδεισο, πρέπει να χωρέσετε τους αδελφούς σας και στην καρδιά σας. Να τους συγχωρείτε και να τους αγαπάτε.

The Gospel of Matthew 6:14-21 The Lord said, "If you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. "And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also."

4 ΚΥΡΙΕ ΙΗΣΟΥ ΧΡΙΣΤΕ ΕΛΕΗΣΟΝ ΜΕ Όλη η τέχνη είναι αυτή ακριβώς. Είτε περπατάς είτε κάθεσαι, είτε στέκεσαι, είτε εργάζεσαι, είτε βρίσκεσαι στην εκκλησία, άσε τη προσευχή αυτή να γλιστρήσει από τα χείλη σου Κύριε Ιησού Χριστέ, ελέησον με με τη προσευχή αυτή στην καρδιά σου θα βρεις εσωτερική ειρήνη και γαλήνη σώματος και ψυχής ( Άγιος Σεραφείμ του Σάρωφ) Η ευχή του Ιησού είναι εργασία κοινή των αγγέλων και των ανθρώπων. Με την προσευχή αυτή οι άνθρωποι πλησιάζουν σύντομα την ζωή των αγγέλων. Η ευχή είναι η πηγή όλων των καλών έργων και αρετών και εξορίζει μακριά από τον άνθρωπο τα σκοτεινά πάθη. Σε σύντομο χρόνο κάνει τον άνθρωπο ικανό να αποκτήσει τη χάρη του Αγίου Πνεύματος. Απόκτησε την, και πριν πεθάνεις θα αποκτήσεις ψυχή Αγγελική. Η ευχή είναι θεϊκή αγαλλίαση. Κανένα άλλο πνευματικό όπλο δε μπορεί να αναχαιτίσει τόσο αποτελεσματικά τους δαίμονες. Τους κατακαίει όπως η φωτιά τα βάτα. (Οσίου Παϊσίου Βελιτσκόφσκυ) Λέγε ακατάπαυστα την ευχή Κύριε Ιησού Χριστέ, ελέησόν με με τη γλώσσα και με τον νου. Όταν η γλώσσα κουράζεται ας αρχίζει ο νους. Και πάλιν όταν ο νους βαρύνεται, η γλώσσα. Μόνον να μην παύεις. Λοιπόν όταν ευχόμενος κρατάει τον νου του να μην φαντάζεται τίποτα, αλλά προσέχει μόνον στα λόγια της ευχής. (Γέρων Ιωσήφ) Δια της ευχής Κύριε Ιησού Χριστέ, ελέησόν με θα κερδίσεις το παν. Δια της ευχής καθαρίζεται ο άνθρωπος, λαμπρύνεται, αγιάζεται. Η ευχή είναι το σωσίβιο της ψυχής και του σώματος. Η ευχή είναι η βάση της τελειότητας. Θα λεπτυνθείτε και θα πετάτε με την ευχή. Δεν υπάρχει άλλος τρόπος σωτηρίας, καθαρισμού και αγιασμού από την νοερά προσευχή. Αυτή γέμισε τον παράδεισο από άγιους ανθρώπους (Γέροντας Αμφιλόχιος) Να λέγεις παιδί μου την ευχή. Κύριε Ιησού Χριστέ, ελέησόν με, ημέρα και νύχτα συνέχεια. Η ευχή θα τα φέρει όλα, η ευχή περιέχει τα πάντα: αίτηση, παράκληση, πίστη, ομολογία, θεολογία κλπ. Η ευχή να λέγεται χωρίς διακοπή. Η ευχή θα φέρει ολίγον κατ ολίγον ειρήνη, γλυκύτητα, χαρά, δάκρυα. Η ειρήνη και η γλυκύτης θα φέρουν περισσότερον ευχή, και η ευχή κατόπιν, περισσοτέραν ειρήνη και γλυκύτητα κ.ο.κ.θα έρθει στιγμή που αν θα σταματάς την ευχή, θα αισθάνεσαι άσχημα. (Γέροντας Εφραίμ Κατουνακιώτης) Να λέτε την ευχή. Κύριε Ιησού Χριστέ, ελέησόν με. Να τη λέτε μια-μια λέξη κατανοητά, καταληπτά. Να μην προχωρείτε στη δεύτερη λέξη, αν δεν καταλάβετε την πρώτη. Να τονίζεται περισσότερο το τελευταίο, δηλ ελέησόν με. Θα σας έρθει τώρα στην αρχή ραθυμία και και ύπνος και μετεωρισμός και αμέλεια αλλά εσείς γρήγορα να συνέρχεστε. Όταν λέτε την ευχή, να θεωρείτε τον εαυτό σας τώρα στην αρχή, ότι είσθε στη κόλαση και να φωνάζετε κλαίοντας, ζητώντας το έλεος του Θεού. Μακριά από την απόγνωση, από την απελπισία και τα όμοια ταύτα. Κατά την ώρα της προσευχής να μην δέχεστε ούτε φαντασία, ούτε μορφή, ούτε εικόνα της Παναγίας και του Χριστού ή άλλου τινός Αγίου, ούτε και τις λέξεις της ευχής να βλέπετε νοερώς (Γέροντας Εφραίμ Κατουνακιώτης) THE JESUS PRAYER In the First Epistle to the Thessalonians the Apostle Paul says: Pray without ceasing. How, then, is one to pray unceasingly? By often repeating the Jesus Prayer: "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me." If one becomes accustomed to this appeal, great consolation and the need to continually make this petition will be felt within, and it will be carried on, as if of itself, within one. Although in the beginning the enemy of the human race will offer hindrances to this, by causing great weariness, indolence, boredom, and over-powering sleep, having withstood all these with the help of God, one will receive peace of soul, spiritual joy, a benevolent disposition towards people, tranquility of thought, and gratitude toward God. In the very name of Jesus Christ a great and graceful power is inherent. Many holy and righteous people advise how one can often, almost without interruption, perform the Jesus Prayer. Saint John Chrysostom says: "It is necessary for everyone, whether eating, drinking, sitting, serving, traveling, or doing anything, to unceasingly cry: 'Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me,' that the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, descending into the depths of the heart, may subdue the pernicious serpent, and save and quicken the soul. Saint Seraphim of Sarov: "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner": let all thine attention and training be in this. Walking, sitting, doing, and standing in church before the divine service, coming in and going out, keep this unceasingly on thy lips and in thy heart. In calling in this manner on the name of God thou wilt find peace, thou wilt attain to purity of spirit and body, and the Holy Spirit, the Origin of all good things, will dwell in thee, and He will guide thee unto holiness, unto all piety and purity." Bishop Theophanes the Recluse: "In order to more conveniently become accustomed to the remembrance of God, for this the fervent Christian has a special means, namely, to repeat unceasingly a brief prayer of two or three words. Most often this is: 'Lord, have mercy!' or 'Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.' If you have not yet heard of this, then hear it now, and if you have not done it, then begin to do it from this time. "Those who have truly decided to serve the Lord God must train themselves in the remembrance of God and in unceasing prayer to Jesus Christ, saying mentally: 'Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner.' "Through such practice, by guarding oneself from distraction and by the preservation of the peace of one's conscience, it is possible to draw near to God and to be united with Him. (718) Confession is a very important sacrament of our church that was given to us by our Lord. Lets make the time this Lenten season to confess and cleanse our soul. In the same way that our body needs to be taken care of, so does our soul. One might say, I confess to God himself, I don't need to go to a priest. If we are sick in body, we will rush to the doctor of the body to get a prescription or get the doctor s advice on how to treat our illness. In the same way, when we do not confess to a priest when our soul needs to be treated and cleansed, how will we get the advice and treatment needed to get over our bad habits that is the cause to distance ourselves from God.
