Ressurectional Apolytikion 4th Tone Having learned the joyful proclamation of the Resurrection from the Angel, and having cast off the ancestral condemnation, the women disciples of the Lord spake to the Apostles exultantly: Death is despoiled and Christ God is risen, granting great mercy to the world. Apolytikion for the Saint As a sharer of the ways and a successor to the throne of the Apostles, O inspired of God, thou foundest discipline to be a means of ascent to divine vision. Wherefore, having rightly divided the word of truth, thou didst also contest for the Faith even unto blood, O Hieromartyr Phocas. Intercede with Christ our God that our souls be saved. Apolytikion of Sts. Constantine and Helen Having seen the image of Thy Cross in Heaven, and like Paul, having received the call not from men, Thine apostle among kings entrusted the commonwealth to Thy hand, O Lord. Keep us always in peace, by the intercessions of the Theotokos, O only Friend of man. Apolytikion of St. Nicholas, The truth of things hath revealed thee to thy flock as a rule of faith, an icon of meekness, and a teacher of temperance; for this cause, thou hast achieved the heights by humility, riches by poverty. O Father and Hierarch Nicholas, intercede with Christ God that our souls be saved. Seasonal Kontakion in the Second Tone O Protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the creator most constant: O despise not the voices of those who have sinned; but be quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee: Hasten to intercession and speed thou to make supplication, O thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee.

St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 16:13-24 BRETHREN, be watchful, stand firm in your faith, be courageous, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love. Now, brethren, you know that the household of Stephanas were the first converts in Achaia, and they have devoted themselves to the service of the saints; I urge you to be subject to such men and to every fellow worker and laborer. I rejoice at the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicos, because they have made up for your absence; for they refreshed my spirit as well as yours. Give recognition to such men. The churches of Asia send greetings. Aquila and Prisca, together with the church in their house, send you hearty greetings in the Lord. All the brethren send greetings. Greet one another with a holy kiss. I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. If any one has no love for the Lord, let him be accursed. Our Lord, come! The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you. And he saw two boats by the lake; but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. And when he had ceased speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch." And Simon answered, "Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets." And when they had done this, they enclosed a great shoal of fish; and as their nets were breaking, they beckoned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord." For he was astonished, and all who were with him, at the catch of fish which they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid; henceforth you will be catching men." And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.

5 Ἡ Κλίμακα τοῦ Παραδείσου Ἡ Κλίμακα τοῦ Παραδείσου! Τί εἶναι αὐτή; Εἶναι οἱ ἅγιες ἀρετές, οἱ ἅγιες εὐαγγελικές ἀρετές: ἡ ταπείνωσις, ἡ πίστις, ἡ νηστεία, ἡ πραότης, ἡ ὑπομονή, ἡ ἀγαθότης, ἡ καλωσύνη, ἡ εὐσπλαχνία, ἡ φιλαλήθεια, ἡ ἀγάπη στόν Χριστό, ἡ ὁμολογία τοῦ Χριστοῦ, τά παθήματα χάριν τοῦ Χριστοῦ. Αὐτές καί ἄλλες πολλές ἅγιες καινοδιαθηκικές ἀρετές. Κάθε ἐντολή τοῦ Χριστοῦ, ἀδελφοί μου αὐτό εἶναι ἀρετή. Τήν τηρεῖς; Τήν ἐφαρμόζεις; Π.χ. τήν ἐντολή του περί νηστείας τήν τηρεῖς, τήν ἐφαρμόζεις; Ἡ νηστεία εἶναι ἁγία ἀρετή, εἶναι σκαλοπάτι τῆς κλίμακος ἀπό τήν γῆ στόν Οὐρανό. Ἡ νηστεία, ἡ εὐλογημένη νηστεία, ὅπως καί ὅλη ἡ κλίμακα ἀπό τήν γῆ στόν Οὐρανό. Κάθε ἀρετή εἶναι ἕνας μικρός παράδεισος. Κάθε ἀρετή τρέφει τήν ψυχή σου, τήν κάνει μακαρία, κατεβάζει στήν ψυχή σου θεία, οὐράνια ἀνάπαυσι. Κάθε ἀρετή εἶναι ἕνα χρυσό καί διαμαντένιο σκαλοπάτι στήν κλίμακα τῆς σωτηρίας σου, στήν κλίμακα πού ἑνώνει τήν γῆ μέ τόν Οὐρανό, πού ἐκτείνεται ἀπό τήν δική σου κόλασι μέχρι τόν δικό σου παράδεισο. Γι αὐτό καμμία ἀπό αὐτές δέν εἶναι ποτέ μόνη της. Ἡ πίστις στόν Κύριό μας Ἰησοῦ Χριστό δέν εἶναι ποτέ μόνη της. Ἐκδηλώνεται μέ τήν προσευχή, μέ τήν νηστεία, μέ τήν ἐλεημοσύνη, μέ τήν ταπείνωσι, μέ τά παθήματα χάριν τοῦ πλησίον. Ὅχι μόνο ἐκδηλώνεται ἀλλά καί ζῆ κάθε ἀρετή, ἐπειδή ὑπάρχει ἡ ἄλλη ἀρετή. Ἡ πίστις ζῆ μέ τήν προσευχή, ἡ προσευχή ζῆ μέ τήν νηστεία, ἡ νηστεία τρέφεται μέ τήν προσευχή, ἡ νηστεία τρέφεται μέ τήν ἀγάπη, ἡ ἀγάπη τρέφεται μέ τήν εὐσπλαχνία. Ἔτσι κάθε ἀρετή ζῆ διά τῆς ἄλλης. Καί ὅταν μία ἀρετή κατοικήσῃ στήν ψυχή σου, ὅλες οἱ ἄλλες θά ἀκολουθήσουν, ὅλες σιγά-σιγά ἀπό αὐτήν θά προέλθουν καί θά ἀναπτυχθοῦν δι αὐτῆς καί μαζί μέ αὐτήν. Ναί, ἡ κλίμακα τοῦ Παραδείσου ἐξαρτᾶται ἀπό σένα. Πές ὅτι νηστεύω μέ φόβο Θεοῦ, μέ εὐλάβεια, μέ πένθος, μέ δάκρυα. Μετά ὅμως τά παρατάω. Νά, ἄρχισα νά κτίζω τήν κλίμακα καί ἐγώ ὁ ἴδιος τήν γκρέμισα, τήν ἔσπασα. Ἐσύ πάλι, ἐσύ, νηστεύεις συχνά, ἐγκρατεύεσαι ἀπό κάθε σωματική τροφή. Ἀλλά νά, τόν καιρό τῆς νηστείας ἀφήνεις νά κατοικήσῃ στήν ψυχή σου ἡ ἁμαρτία, νά σπείρωνται στήν ψυχή σου διάφοροι ἀκάθαρτοι λογισμοί, ἐπιθυμίες. Σέ σένα ἀνήκει νά τούς διώχνῃς ἀμέσως μακρυά σου μέ τήν προσευχή, τό πένθος, τήν ἀνάγνωσι ἤ μέ ὁποιαδήποτε ἄλλη ἄσκησι. Ἀλλά, ἄν ἐσύ, ἐνῶ νηστεύῃς σωματικῶς, τρέφῃς τήν ψυχή σου μέ κάποια ἁμαρτία ἤ μέ κάποιο κρυφό πάθος, νά! ἐσύ, ἐνῶ ἀρχίζῃς νά χτίζῃς ἕνα-ἕνα τά σκαλοπάτια τῆς νηστείας ἀπό τήν γῆ πρός τόν Οὐρανό, ἐσύ ὁ ἴδιος πάλι τά γκρεμίζεις, τά καταστρέφεις. Ἡ νηστεία ἀπαιτεῖ εὐσπλαχνία, ταπείνωσι, πραότητα. Ὅλα αὐτά πᾶνε μαζί. Εἶναι σάν ἕνα συνεργεῖο οἰκοδόμων, τῶν ὁποίων ἀρχηγός εἶναι ἡ προσευχή. Αὐτή εἶναι ὁ ἀρχιμάστορας, ὁ ἀρχιτέκτονας, ὁ ἀρχιμηχανικός τῆς πνευματικῆς μας ζωῆς, τῶν πνευματικῶν μας ἐφέσεων, τῆς κλίμακος πού θά στήσουμε μεταξύ γῆς καί Οὐρανοῦ. Ἡ προσευχή κατέχει τήν πρώτη θέσι. Ὅταν ἡ προσευχή ἐγκατασταθῇ στήν καρδιά σου καί αὐτή φλέγεται ἀπό ἀδιάλειπτη δίψα γιά τόν Κύριο, ὅταν Αὐτόν συνέχεια βλέπει, Αὐτόν συνέχεια αἰσθάνεται, τότε μέ τήν προσευχή εἰσάγεις στήν ψυχή σου ὅλες τίς ἄλλες ἀρετές. Τότε ὁ μηχανικός (ἡ προσευχή) ἔχει ἄριστους τεχνίτες, κτίζει γρήγορα-γρήγορα θαυμάσιες κλίμακες ἀπό τήν γῆ μέχρι τόν Οὐρανό, τίς κλίμακες τῶν σταδιακῶν σου ἀναβάσεων πρός τόν Θεό, πρός τήν τελειότητά Του. Ὅταν ἔχῃς δύναμι, δυνατή προσευχή, τότε καμμία νηστεία δέν θά σοῦ εἶναι δύσκολη, τότε καμμία ἀγάπη δέν θά σοῦ εἶναι ἀδύνατη. Ἁγία εὐαγγελική ἀγάπη! Όσιος Ιουστίνος Πόποβιτς ************************************************************************************************ What is the Iconostasis? Every Orthodox church will have an iconostasis before its altar. "Iconostasis" means "icon-stand", and it can be as simple as a large image of Christ on the right and a corresponding image of the Virgin and Child on the left. In a more established church, the iconostasis may be a literal wall, adorned with icons. Some of versions shield the altar from view, except when the central doors stand open. The basic set-up of two large icons creates, if you use your imagination, three doors. The central one, in front of the altar itself, is called the "Holy Doors" or "Royal Doors," because there the King of Glory comes out to the congregation in the Eucharist. Only the priest and deacons, who bear the Eucharist, use the Holy Doors. The openings on the other sides of the icons, if there is a complete iconostasis, have doors with icons of angels; they are termed the "Deacon's Doors." Altar boys and others with business behind the altar use these, although no one is to go through any of the doors without an appropriate reason. Altar service--priests, deacons, altar boys--is restricted to males. Females are invited to participate in every other area of church life. Their contribution has been honored equally with men's since the days of the martyrs; you can't look at an Orthodox altar without seeing Mary and other holy women. In most Orthodox churches, women do everything else men do: lead congregational singing, paint icons, teach classes, read the epistle, and serve on the parish council.

6 We Welcome His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios to our Cathedral Καλωσορίζουμε τον Σεβασμιώτατο Μητροπολίτη Αλέξιο στον Καθεδρικό ναό μας On December 20, 2002, the Holy Synod of the Holy Patriarchate of Constantinople elevated our Holy Diocese to become the Holy Metropolis of Atlanta and His Grace, Bishop Alexios of Atlanta, to His Eminence, Metropolitan Alexios of Atlanta. This is his story: He was born Anthimos Panagiotopoulos, on Christmas Day, Dececember 25, 1943, in Patras, Greece, to Spyridon and Angeliki Panagiotopoulos. He is the oldest of five brothers and two sisters. He was tonsured a monk at Vatopedion Monastery in 1963 and graduated from the Athonias Ecclesiastical Academy in In November 1965, he was ordained to the diaconate and served as archdeacon of the Metropolis of Patras until he entered the National Kapodistrian University School of Theology in Athens. While in Athens, he served as deacon at the churches of St. Panteleimon and St. Spyridon. He was ordained to the priesthood on August 27, 1972, and assigned to St. Sophia Church in Patras, while living as a brother of the Gerokomion Monastery of the Virgin Mary. Following his graduation from the University of Athens School of Theology in 1973, he enrolled in the Boston University School of Theology and received his Doctor of Ministry degree in While at BU, he served as pastor of Dormition Church in Burlington, Vermont. He returned to Patras upon completion of his studies and served as Abbot of the Gerokomion Monastery. A year later, he was summoned back to the United States to serve as dean of Sts. Constantine and Helen Church in Brooklyn, New York, then was transferred to the Hellenic Orthodox Community in The Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate elevated the Very Rev. Anthimos to the episcopacy as Bishop of Troas on April 7, He assumed the name Alexios upon his consecration by Archbishop Iakovos on May 17, He was enthroned a month later at St. Demetrios Cathedral as the first Choroepiscopos for the Hellenic Community of Astoria. He was assigned the parishes in Queens, Long Island, southern Connecticut, and Upstate New York on January 1, 1989, and also was named director of the Hellenic Cultural Center in Astoria, NY. Bishop Alexios served the Atlanta Diocese as Archepiscopal Vicar of the Atlanta Diocese from January 1, 1997, until his election and enthronement as Bishop of Atlanta on May 22,
