2 CYRUS & JOHN THE UNMERCENARIES These Saints lived during the years of Diocletian. Saint Cyrus was from Alexandria, and Saint John was from Edessa of Mesopotamia. Because of the persecution of that time, Cyrus fled to the Gulf of Arabia, where there was a small community of monks. John, who was a soldier, heard of Cyrus' fame and came to join him. Henceforth, they passed their life working every virtue, and healing every illness and disease freely by the grace of Christ; hence their title of "Unmercenaries." They heard that a certain woman, named Athanasia, had been apprehended together with her three daughters, Theodora, Theoctiste, and Eudoxia, and taken to the tribunal for their confession of the Faith. Fearing lest the tender young maidens be terrified by the torments and renounce Christ, they went to strengthen them in their contest in martyrdom; therefore they too were seized. After Cyrus and John and those sacred women had been greatly tormented, all were beheaded in the year 292. Their tomb became a renowned shrine in Egypt, and a place of universal pilgrimage. Entrance with Gospel (This act of worship symbolizes the coming of Christ, who is God s wisdom on earth. The Choir sings one of the dismissal hymns of the Resurrection - The Priest comes forth from the Sanctuary, bearing the Gospel. He is preceded by the Altar boys holding candlesticks. Facing the Royal gate of the Iconostasion, he elevates the Gospel and chants:) Wisdom! Let us rise! Come, let us worship and bow unto Christ. Save us, O Son of God, Who didst rise from the dead; sace us who sing unto Thee: Alleluia. Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophetic utterance when the council of elders laid their hands upon you. Practice these duties, devote yourself to them, so that all may see your progress. The Gospel of Luke 19,1-10 At that time, Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. And there was a man named Zacchaios; he was a chief collector, and rich. And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not, on account of the crowd, because he was small of stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaios, make haste and come down; for I must stay at your

6 house today." So he made haste and came down, and received him joyfully. And when they saw it they all murmured, "He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner." And Zacchaios stood and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded any one of anything, I restore it fourfold." And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of man came to seek and to save the lost.". PRIEST MESSAGE FATHER NICHOLAS MESSAGE Dear faithful, Let us cleanse our houses of anything which does not belong to us, and all things that are unchristian. Let us not keep things in our homes that do not belong to us. And then, let us give from our own to others who do not have, as did Zacchaeus. I will give from mine more if I have wronged anyone. These are the virtues which we take from today s gospel: Repentance, righteousness, and charity, almsgiving. And if we just practice these, then we do not have to call Christ to our home; He will come without invitation, and He will say to us as He did to Zacchaeus, Today salvation has come unto this house. STEWARDSHIP There is a legend about Zacchaeus, the dishonest tax collector, whom Jesus called down from the sycamore tree one day to have dinner with him. As a result of his personal encounter with Jesus Christ, his life was transformed and he gave half of his wealth to the poor, and repaying everyone he cheated in later years, the legend says, Zacchaeus would rise early every morning, carry a bucket of water to this same sycamore tree and carefully water its roots. One day his wife followed him and asked the reason for his strange concern over an old sycamore tree. Zacchaeus replied, This is where I found Christ! This is where my life changed! This is where I discovered the deepest meaning of life, and I am forever grateful! How grateful are we, after numerous blessings, that we have received from our Lord? It only took one visit from the Lord for Zacchaeus to give half of his wealth away. How many blessings do we need to receive before we give back to Him our small portion. ΜΗΝΥΜΑ ΠΑΤΕΡΑ ΝΙΚΟΛΑΟΥ Αγαπητοί, ας καθαρίσουμε τα σπίτια μας από ότι δεν ανήκει σε μας και από κάθε τι μη χριστιανικό. Ας δώσουμε δε από τα δικά μας σ εκείνους που δεν έχουν, όπως ακριβώς έπραξε ο Ζακχαίος, «Θα δώσω από τα υπάρχοντα μου περισσότερα, αν έχω αδικήσει κάποιον.» Αυτές είναι οι αρετές που μας δίδασκε το σημερινό ευαγγέλιο. Μετάνοια, δικαιοσύνη και αγαθοεργία (ελεημοσύνη). Και αν εκτελούμε αυτές τις αρετές, δεν χρειάζεται να καλέσουμε τον Χριστό στο σπίτι μας. Ο Χριστός θα μας επισκεφθεί χωρίς πρόσκληση και θα μας πει ότι είχε πει στον Ζακχαίο. «Σήμερον ήλθε η σωτηρία σ αυτόν τον οίκον.» Υπάρχει κάποια αφήγηση για τον Ζακχαίο, τον αρχιτελώνη, τον οποίο κάλεσε ο Ιησούς κάτω από τη συκομουριά μια μέρα να δειπνήσει μαζί του. Ως αποτέλεσμα της προσωπικής αυτής συνάντησης του Ζακχαίου με τον Ιησού Χριστό, η ζωή του μετατράπηκε και έδωσε το ήμισυ των υπαρχόντων του εις τους φτωχούς, και αποπλήρωσε τους πάντες που εξαπάτησε. Η αφήγηση αυτή λέει, ότι ο Ζακχαίος μετά από μερικά χρόνια, νωρίς κάθε πρωί πήγαινε, με ένα κουβά νερό σε αυτή την ίδια τη συκομουριά που γνώρισε τον Χριστό και πότιζε τις ρίζες της. Μία ημέρα τον ακολούθησε η σύζυγός του και τον ρώτησε για αυτό το περίεργο του ενδιαφέρον για την γέρικη συκομουριά. Ο Ζακχαίος της απάντησε "Αυτό είναι το σημείο όπου γνώρισα τον Χριστό! Εδώ είναι το σημείο όπου άλλαξε η ζωή μου! Σε αυτό το δένδρο ανακάλυψα το βαθύτερο νόημα της ζωής, και είμαι για πάντα ευγνώμων! ". Πόσο ευγνώμονες είμαστε εμείς από τις τόσες ευλογίες που μας έχει χαρίσει ο Κύριος; Για τον Ζακχαίο πήρε μόνο μία επίσκεψη από τον Χριστό για να δώσει μισά από τα υπάρχοντα του. Πόσες ευλογίες χρειαζόμαστε εμείς να λάβουμε πριν δώσουμε πίσω εις Αυτόν ένα μικρό μέρος των υπαρχόντων μας.
