2 WEEKLY MESSAGE It happens all the time. You realize that you need God for something so you call out to Him in your prayers for that one moment of mercy. You pray that He would look at you and cause your trouble to fade into the distance, and for a brief moment you forget your struggle. For that brief moment, your life is totally in focus and all you realize God has never forgotten you. You smile to yourself knowing how much God loves you, and you have two choices. At that moment, when everything is perfectly clear, you feel empowered by God s blessing and you charge full-steam ahead with your plans for the future. You forget that just moments ago you were calling out to God for mercy. You forget that just moments ago you weren t sure where your life would end up. You forget that moments ago all you could think about was the struggle that consumed you. You forget that it was God that blessed you. or... At that moment when everything is perfectly clear, you suddenly realize that it wasn t an accident that you can see clearly. You suddenly realize that just moments ago you didn t know how you would solve the problems that consume you. You suddenly realize that just moment ago you were calling on God. You suddenly realize that God has blessed you. There isn t much difference between forgetting that God blessed you, and realizing just how much He has blessed you because He blesses you whether or not you remember Him. He blesses you whether or not you give Him credit. He blesses you whether or not you return to thank Him. But when you thank Him, you get an additional blessing. When you thank Him you are made well; you are healed from what really affects you. When you thank God, rather than just receiving His blessing and going about your day, you are raised up to heaven to participate in His great joy. When you thank God, you are able to continue on your journey to heaven free from the burden and temptations of the world; you are no longer a foreigner, but a member of God s family, His chosen people. Today I want you to know that God has reached out and healed you just because you asked. You now have two choices. When you go home, will you forget that it was God had made everything clear, or will you realize how much God loves you? Will you charge ahead or thank God? It is your choice to make, but you should remember that it is only those who remember to thank Him who are made well. It is only those who return to God after He blesses who hear the word, Your faith has made you well.

Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience. In these you once walked, when you lived in them. But now put them all away; anger, wrath, malice, slander, and foul talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old nature with its practices and have put on the new nature, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. GOSPEL Luke 17:12-19 A t that time, as Jesus entered a village, He was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance and lifted up their voices and said: "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us." When He saw them He said to them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." And as they went they were cleansed. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus's feet, giving Him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. Then said Jesus: "Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?" And He said to him: "Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well." HOLY EUCHARIST (HOLY COMMUNION) Holy Communion is a Sacrament within the Orthodox Church and is only offered to Baptized and/or Chrismated Orthodox Christians who have prepared themselves to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As you come to receive, please follow the direction of the Parish Council Members, Ushers, and Acolytes. We remind everyone that the Blessed Bread (Antidoron) offered at the end of the Divine Liturgy may be received by all.

7 Saints and Feasts of the Week SAINT ANTHONY THE GREAT Saint Anthony, the Father of monks, was born in Egypt in 251 of pious parents who departed this life while he was yet young. On hearing the words of the Gospel: "If you would be perfect, go and sell what you have, and give to the poor" (Matt. 19:21), he immediately put it into action. Distributing to the poor all he had, he departed to the desert. His ascetic struggles by day and by night surpass the bounds of nature; and the report of his deeds of virtue drew such a multitude to follow him that the desert was transformed into a city, while he became, so to speak, the governor, lawgiver, and master-trainer of all the citizens of this newly formed city. The cities of the world also enjoyed the fruit of his virtue. When the Christians were being persecuted and put to death under Maximinus in 312, he hastened to their aid and consolation. When the Church was troubled by the Arians, he went to Alexandria and struggled against them on behalf of Orthodoxy. During this time, he also turned many unbelievers to Christ. He began his ascetic life outside a village in Upper Egypt, studying the ways of the ascetics and holy men there, and perfecting himself in the virtues of each. Desiring to increase his labors, he departed into the desert, and finding an abandoned fortress in the mountain, he made his dwelling in it, training himself in extreme fasting, unceasing prayer, and fierce conflicts with the demons. Here he remained, about 20 years. Saint Athanasios the Great, who knew him personally, says that he came forth from that fortress "initiated in the mysteries and filled with the Spirit of God." Afterwards, because of the press of the faithful, who deprived him of his solitude, he was enlightened by God to journey with certain Bedouins, until he came to a mountain near the Red Sea, where he passed the remaining part of his life. He fell asleep in the Lord on January 17, 356, having lived some 105 years. ΑΓΙΟΣ ΑΝΤΩΝΙΟΣ Ο ΜΕΓΑΣ Ο Μέγας Αντώνιος γεννήθηκε το 251 στην Άνω Αίγυπτο από πλούσιους και ενάρετους γονείς, τους οποίους έχασε σε νεαρή ηλικία. Συγκεντρώνει όμως την προσοχή του στην μυστική θεωρία των μοναχών της ερήμου και στην φροντίδα της μικρής αδελφής του. Γρήγορα αποφασίζει να εγκαταλείψει τα εγκόσμια και αναχωρεί για την έρημο. Εκεί παίδευσε την ψυχή του και τιθάσευσε τα πάθη του φθάνοντας στα ανώτατα όρια της άσκησης ώστε η ψυχή του μπορούσε να εξέρχεται του σώματός του ενώ βρισκόταν ακόμη εν ζωή. Γίνεται το πρότυπο των ασκητών. Πολλοί εξ αυτών έφθαναν στην έρημο για να τον ακούσουν και να τον συμβουλευθούν. Παρέδωσε την μακάρια ψυχή του στο Θεό σε ηλικία 105 ετών. Αν και, όπως λέγει ο Μέγας Αθανάσιος, μία από τις τελευταίες επιθυμίες του Οσίου Αντωνίου ήταν να μείνει κρυφός ο τόπος της ταφής του, οι μοναχοί που μόναζαν κοντά του έλεγαν ότι κατείχαν το ιερό λείψανό του, το οποίο επί Ιουστινιανού (561 μ.χ.), κατατέθηκε στην Εκκλησία του Αγίου Ιωάννου του Προδρόμου στην Αλεξάνδρεια και από εκεί αργότερα, το 635, μεταφέρθηκε στην Κωνσταντινούπολη. Η Σύναξή του ετελείτο στη Μεγάλη Εκκλησία. MAXIMOS THE CONFESSOR The divine Maximus, who was from Constantinople, sprang from an illustrious family. He was a lover of wisdom and an eminent theologian. At first, he was the chief private secretary of the Emperor Heraclius and his grandson Constans. When the Monothelite heresy became predominant in the royal court, out of hatred for this error the Saint departed for the Monastery at Chrysopolis (Scutari), of which he later became the abbot. When Constans tried to constrain him either to accept the Monothelite teaching, or to stop speaking and writing against it - neither of which the Saint accepted to do - his tongue was uprooted and his right hand was cut off, and he was sent into exile where he reposed in 662. At the time only he and his few disciples were Orthodox in the East.

17 VOLUNTEER AT THE COLD NIGHT SHELTER The First United Methodist Church (FUMC) in Tarpon Springs has graciously opened its doors to families without heat, and to the homeless, during the cold winter months when the temperatures fall below 40 degrees. They will provide a warm overnight facility for those in need, along with some food and hot beverages. This occurs approximately 4 to 5 nights each winter, and some 30 to 40 people come to the shelter. Teams of volunteers from various churches and local organizations set up the facility for the night, serve food and otherwise ensure a safe and warm overnight experience. All participants are asked to leave the facility no later than 7 am the flowing morning. The volunteers then clean-up the facility and prepare it for the day s regular activities. The church is recruiting teams of volunteers to help with this effort and will be seeking donations of food and beverages on the nights when the shelter is open.
