1 Scholarships Academic year The Jeanne Rosemary Georgiles Foundation Scholarship - Academic year The foundation provides two scholarships of $1,000 each to students who have graduated from High School (Grade 12) in 2015 and entered University as full time students. The application deadline for this scholarships is February 1 st, All recipients must be members of the Hellenic Community of Ottawa. Detailed information and application forms are available at the narthex of the church, from our website and from the HCO office at ext AHEPA Family Annual Scholarship: Application available on the HCO website. Two scholarships are awarded. Applicants must be of Greek descent, one scholarship to a student who graduated high school in June 2015 and is attending an accredited college or university. The other to a student who is in their 2nd year or beyond in a post secondary/ graduate program at an accredited college or university. Pajama Drive - ΕΥΧΑΡΙΣΤΟΥΜΕ H Φιλόπτωχος Αδελφότητα ευχαριστεί όλους όσοι έδωσαν δωρεά στην φετινή προσπάθειά της «Pajama Drive». Για να ευχαριστήσουν, και από κοντά, τους δωρητές, ο ραδιοφωνικός σταθμός CHRI, η Ελληνική Κοινότητα Οττάβας και η Φιλόπτωχος Αδελφότης σας προσκαλούν όλους, μικρούς και μεγάλους, σε μια εκδήλωση, με αποκριάτικο θέμα, που θα πραγματοποιηθεί την Κυριακή, 7 Φεβρουαρίου, στις 2 το απόγευμα στο Κοινοτικό μας Κέντρο. Απόκριες Χορός Μεταμφιεσμένων 20 Φεβρουαρίου Ο Ελληνικός Αθλητικός Σύλλογος Οττάβας, σε συνεργασία με το Σχολείο Ελληνικών Παραδοσιακών χορών και την ομάδα «Οδύσσεια» διοργανώνουν αποκριάτικο χορό μετά δείπνου, που θα πραγματοποιηθεί το Σάββατο, 20 Φεβρουαρίου, στο Κοινοτικό Κέντρο και σας καλούν να παρευρεθείτε και να ντυθείτε με αποκριάτικες στολές. 3 Ανακοινώσεις Μνήμη Τριών Ιεραρχών Αρτοκλασία και Γεύμα - ΣΗΜΕΡΑ Σήμερα, το Ελληνικό Σχολείο θα τιμήσει τους Τρεις Ιεράρχες με αρτοκλασία και, εν συνεχεία, με γιορτή στο Κοινοτικό Κέντρο. 4 Announcements The Three Hierarchs Artoclasia and Luncheon - TODAY Today, the Hellenic School will honour the Three Hierarchs with Artoclasia and a Luncheon hosted by the Parents & Guardians Association (PGA) at the Banquet Centre. This is the main fundraising event for the PGA and the Hellenic School. Tickets are $25/adults and $12/children aged 6-12 years (all children under 6 are free). 5 Να είμαι σε θέση «Να δεχθώ» O Φούλτον Ούρσλερ (Αμερικανός δημοσιογράφος, συγγραφέας και εκδότης) αναφέρει ένα περιστατικό που συνέβη στην παιδική του ηλικία. Μια Κυριακή, η μητέρα του τον έντυσε με τα καλά του ρούχα και του είπε να καθήσει στα σκαλοπάτια τού σπιτιού τους και να προσέχει μη λερωθεί. «Θα πάμε να δούμε τη θεία σου και θέλω να είσαι καθαρός» του είπε. Ο Φούλτον υπάκουσε μέχρι που ο γιος του φούρναρη πρόβαλε στο δρόμο κι άρχισε να τον κοροϊδεύει. Τα δυο παιδιά, πολύ γρήγορα, πιάστηκαν στα χέρια και, σε μια στιγμή, χωρίς να το καταλάβει ο μικρός Φούλτον βρέθηκε καθισμένος στη μέση μιας λακούβας με λάσπες. Αμέσως μετά σηκώθηκε και γύρισε στα σκαλοπάτια εκεί όπου τον είχε αφήσει η μητέρα του. Σε λίγο, πέρα μακριά από το δρόμο, φάνηκε ο παγωτατζής με το καροτσάκι του. Ξεχνώντας και πάλι τις οδηγίες τής μητέρας του, ο Φούλτον έτρεξε μέσα στο σπίτι και την παρακάλεσε να του δώσει χρήματα για να αγοράσει παγωτό. «Κοίτα πώς έγινες» του φώναξε εκείνη «Έτσι όπως έγινες, δε θα πρέπει να ζητάς τίποτα». Υπάρχουν πολλοί άνθρωποι που αισθάνονται ανάλογα όταν είναι να λάβουν τη Θεία Κοινωνία. Πόσο συχνά δεν ακούμε κάποιους να λένε «Δεν είμαι σε θέση να κοινωνήσω». Αλήθεια, πότε είναι κάποιος «σε θέση» για να λάβει τη Θεία Κοινωνία; Νιώσατε ποτέ ότι δεν θα πρέπει να κοινωνήσετε; Κάποιες φορές, πολλοί από εμάς αισθανόμαστε ανάξιοι και νιώθουμε ότι θα είναι υποκρισία να κοινωνήσουμε. Νομίζω ότι είναι καλό να αισθανόμαστε κατ αυτό τον τρόπο, πριν από την Θεία Κοινωνία. Κανένας Χριστιανός δεν θα πρέπει να προσέρχεται για να κοινωνήσει θεωρώντας ότι το αξίζει. Όποιος νιώθει έτσι δεν πρέπει να κοινωνά γιατί δείχνει ότι η ψυχή του έχει δηλητηριαστεί από την αμαρτία του εγωισμού και ως εκ τούτου δεν είναι αρκετά καλός για να δεχθεί την Αγία Κοινωνία. Υπάρχει ένα πράγμα που πρέπει να θυμόμαστε πάντα όταν είναι να προσέλθουμε για Αγία Κοινωνία. Όταν ο Ιησούς μας καλεί να κοινωνήσουμε, μας καλεί όχι για για να είμαστε τέλειοι αλλά για να εξομολογηθούμε. Εάν δεν είμαστε «αρκετά καλοί» όπως και κανένας από εμάς δεν είναι- ας μετανοήσουμε και ας εξομολογηθούμε. Έτσι ο Κύριός μας θα μας συγχωρέσει, θα μας εξαγνίσει και θα μας δώσει την αξία που χρειάζεται. «Και τον ερχόμενον προς με ου μη εκβάλω έξω». We will be walking over to see your aunt, she promised, and I want you to be neat. He waited obediently until the baker s son came along and called him a sissy. Soon they got into a fight and the next thing Fulton knew he was sitting in the middle of a mud puddle. With a twinge of conscience he returned to the steps. Presently, down the street came the ice-cream peddler, pushing his cart. Forgetting his disobedience, Fulton ran indoors and begged his mother for money. Just look at yourself! she exclaimed. You re in no condition to ask for anything. There are many persons who feel the same way about receiving Communion. How often we hear people say, I m in no condition to receive Communion. When is a person in condition to receive Communion? Have you ever had the feeling on a particular occasion that you shouldn t take Communion? Many of us have that feeling occasionally. We feel unworthy; we feel that it would be hypocritical to take Communion at that time; we feel that we aren t good enough to participate. I think this is a good feeling to have before Communion. No Christian should ever come to Communion with the feeling that he deserves to come because he is good enough to participate. If anyone has this feeling, he should not come. For this is a good sign that he is not good enough; that his soul has been poisoned by the sin of pride. There is one thing we should always remember about Communion. And that is this: when the Lord Jesus invites us to Communion, He is calling us not to perfection but to confession. If we are not good enough as none of us is then let us repent and come to confession to receive the Lord s forgiveness, to let Him cleanse us, to let Him make us worthy. 6 Reverend Fathers, Honourable Presidents and Esteemed Members of the Boards of Directors, Members of the Philoptochos Societies, Teachers, Students, Youth of the Communities and to the Entire Plenitude of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Toronto (Canada) Greek Education in Canada By Metropolitan Sotirios JANUARY 2016 The Greek language was universal in ancient times. It was and still is the language of science, technology and culture. In all languages, many words used in science and technology are Greek. The root of many words in various languages spoken in the world is of Greek origin. The New Testament the Bible announcing the good news of our salvation in Jesus Christ was written in the Greek language. The Eastern Church Fathers all wrote their theological treatises in Greek. Considering these facts, one can understand the importance of the Greek language and how much it has influenced the world. It should also be clear that we should not spare any effort, time and resources to not only preserve, but to also transmit and spread the use of the Greek language in the world. The Greek language is taught at several Canadian universities, but also in several high schools. Our Holy Metropolis and some Greek Communities have wonderful Greek Orthodox Schools that operate on a daily basis. All our Communities across Canada have Greek schools that operate either on weekday afternoons or on Saturday mornings. Do all the children of Greek origin study Greek in these schools? Unfortunately, the answer is no. Is the Greek language spoken in all homes where the parents are of Greek origin? Again the answer is no. What is the reason? What needs to be corrected? What needs to be done? The Greek Orthodox Communities in Canada, as well as Greek associations across the country, must make an even greater effort to teach and to transmit the Greek language and the Greek Orthodox faith to our children and youth. It is important to note that these efforts must begin at home. Parents need to understand that their children will identify as Greeks and Greek-Canadians only when they know the Greek language and live their Orthodox faith. Making this determination, parents should make every effort to do the following. They should speak the Greek language with each other and with their children at home. They should live and apply the teachings and traditions of our Greek Orthodox faith at home, at church, and outside the home in society. They should enroll their children in the Greek schools that operate either daily, in the afternoons or on Saturdays. They should also enroll their children in the Orthodox Religious Education programs of our Communities that operate on Sundays or on weekdays in our Communities. They should not only enroll them, but they should also monitor and ensure that their children attend and are applying themselves to learning the lessons taught in these schools. They should properly evaluate whether to give priority to signing up their children in sports and other programs that may consume their spare time, or to their education and training in the Greek language, culture and Greek Orthodox faith. There is no doubt that we must make an even greater effort to ensure the success of our Greek Schools and our Sunday Schools in our Communities across Canada. Our Community leaders and our Teachers must make an even greater effort to establish more Greek schools that operate daily, in the afternoons and on Saturday mornings. Most importantly, they must ensure that the schools that are now operating are doing so in the best possible manner that they can, in order to achieve the desired results. I express to all our Communities, and to all who operate and who teach in our Greek and Sunday schools, my immense gratitude. I especially thank the founders and the benefactors of our Greek and Sunday schools. I also thank the Community Councils and our Clergy who take the time to organize and to promote our Greek and Sunday schools. I thank the teachers who teach in our Greek and our Sunday schools, often times facing many challenges and problems. I thank the parents of our children for their interest in our Greek Orthodox education and for their passion in wishing to transmit our Greek language, culture and Orthodox Christian faith to their children. I praise and glorify the thrice- Holy, Triune God, for He has blessed us to live in this blessed country of Canada, where we have the freedom and the many benefits and resources both spiritual and material to succeed and make progress continuously. I convey to all the Grace and the Blessings of God and urge everyone to make even greater efforts towards the implementation and success of our Greek language and our Greek Orthodox religious education programs in all our Communities across Canada for the benefit of our children and our youth.
