MEMORIAL SERVICES 40 days - John Korovilas Memorial services are offered for the eternal rest of persons who have fallen asleep in the Lord. There are some days when Memorials are not permitted please call the church office before planning. Memorials take place at 40 days, at 6 months, at 1 year and at 3 years. After three years have passed, the departed are more properly remembered on the Saturdays of the Souls. Please also remember that we have discontinued the custom of placing candles in the kolyva. HOW TO RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION Orthodox Christians in good standing are encouraged to receive Holy Communion frequently, provided they have prepared themselves spiritually, mentally and physically. They must be on time for the Divine Liturgy, and be in a Christ-like, calm state of mind. They should be in a confession relationship with their priest or spiritual father, and they should have selfexamined their conscience. On the day of receiving Holy Communion, it is not proper to eat or drink anything before coming to church. When you approach to receive Holy Communion, state your Christian (baptismal) name clearly, and hold the red communion cloth to your chin. After receiving, wipe your lips on the cloth, step back carefully, hand the cloth to the next person and make the sign of the Cross as you step away. Please take special care not to bump the Holy Chalice. A STEWARDSHIP REMINDER We are grateful to the 489 families who have committed $ 271, so far this year! How about you? Jesus told us YOU are the light of the World; let your light shine before others. Stewardship is discovering our light by using the talents and gifts God has given us. True stewardship means that our offering to God is a reflection of the Light in us, and of our appreciation for the blessings and benefits we derive from our Church! If you have not yet made your 2017 commitment, please do so. THANK YOU TO OUR ANONYMOUS DONOR! We are very happy to announce that our church received an anonymous donation of $25,000 last week! We are most grateful to our unnamed benefactor and pray that our Lord reward his/her generosity with abundant blessings! IT IS PROPER AND RIGHT... Please understand that chewing gum in church is considered to be very discourteous and even vulgar. Your attention to this is greatly appreciated. Be considerate! Please remove lipstick when reverencing the holy icons or receiving Holy Communion. Please teach your children that it is not proper to play video games, eat snacks, chew gum or cross their legs in church. Please be careful when you receive Holy Communion that you do not bump the Holy Chalice and cause it to spill! Please teach your children to dress modestly. Shoulders and midriffs should be covered, and discretion used concerning skirt lengths and excessive makeup and jewelry.

A saliva swab can determine if you are a potential match. A donor of Greek descent has a much greater chance of being a successful transplant candidate due to DNA makeup. A table has been set up at our Big Greek Food Fest for anyone interested in becoming a donor. Saliva swabs will be performed on site. As for a man who is factious, after admonishing him once or twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is perverted and sinful; he is self-condemned. When I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing. And let your people learn to apply themselves to good deeds, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not to be unfruitful. All who are with me send greetings to you. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. GOSPEL READING Matthew 5: You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. 6 A NEW AMERICAN SAINT THE GLORIFICATION OF ST MARDARIJE, JULY 14-16, 2017 This weekend, July 14-16, 2017, the Patriarch of Serbia and many hierarchs, priests and faithful have gathered in Libertyville, Illinois for the Glorification, or Proclamation of St. Mardarije. Archimandrite Mardarije Uskoković was Administrator of the Serbian Orthodox Church presence in North America, , initially under the omoforion of the Russian Orthodox Church. As of 1922, the Serbian Orthodox Church established a diocese of the U.S.A and Canada, with St. Nikolaj Velimirović as first Bishop. Archimandrite Mardarije resumed his role as administrator in 1923, and became Bishop in He led the Serbian Orthodox Church in Canada and the USA and founded the historic Monastery of St. Sava in Libertyville, which he initially purchased with his own savings. He later bequeathed it to the Serbian Diocese and people. The monastery was consecrated in He guided the Church with piety and dignity, through difficult times, until his death at the age of 46 in 1935, and he was buried at St. Sava Monastery, which he built with his own hands and prayers. For his exemplary life, leadership and spiritual gifts left to us in North America, Bishop Mardarije was added to the calendar of saints of the Orthodox Church by the Holy Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church on May 29, The official glorification of his sainthood will take place on July 15-16, In preparation for the Glorification, the relics of St. Mardarije were exhumed on May 5, No one knew if his body would be whole and incorrupt. The people who were present were deeply awed by what they discovered upon opening the grave! Upon opening his tomb, his relics, which have laid in his tomb since his burial in 1935, were found to be incorrupt from the knees upward! His skin was intact and the hair of his beard and head looked as if he had just reposed; it was very soft. We Orthodox Christians of the Chicago area have something very special: a new saint, witnessing the glory and the presence of God among us, and inspiring us to live in faith and purity.
