EPISTLE: ST. PAUL'S LETTER TO THE HEBREWS 9:11-14 BRETHREN, when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the Holy Place, taking not the blood of goats and calves but his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. For if the sprinkling of defiled persons with the blood of goats and bulls and with the ashes of a heifer sanctifies for the purification of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify your conscience from dead works to serve the living God.
5 GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MARK 10, At that time, Jesus taking the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to happen to him, saying, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death, and deliver him to the Gentiles; and they will mock him, and spit upon him, and scourge him, and kill him; and after three days he will rise." And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him, and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." And he said to them, "What do you want me to do for you?" And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory." But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?" And they said to him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared." And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant of James and John. And Jesus called them to him and said to them, "You know that those who are supposed to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." +MEMORIAL SERVICE - +ΙΕΡΟ ΜΝΗΜΟΣΥΝΟ+ 40 day memorial for + Eftixia Effie Sakellariadis given by her daughters and grandchildren 40 day memorial for +Stylianos Karagiannis given by his son Nicholas 1 year memorial for + Michalis Mandilis given by his family 1 year memorial for + Kalliope Morikis given by her family 5 year memorial for +Stayko Staykov given his daughter and family 6 year memorial for + Eirini Skreke given by her family Trisagion +Tassia Tessie Avdoulos + Athena Mandilis May her Memory be Eternal! 6 GREAT LENT AND HOLY WEEK 2017 (February 27 April 15) The Lenten fasting discipline commences after Forgiveness Vespers on February 26 and concludes with the breaking of the fast at Pascha on April 16. In general, the fasting rules during Great Lent and Holy Week are as follows: WEEKDAYS (Monday Friday) are observed as Strict Fast Days. On these days we abstain from meat, dairy, fish with backbones, fowl, alcoholic beverages, and olive oil. WEEKENDS (Saturday and Sunday) are observed as Wine and Oil Days. On these days the fast is relaxed to permit alcoholic beverages and olive oil. In addition, two special feastdays that fall during this period Annunciation (March 25) and Palm Sunday (April 9, this year) are kept as Fish, Wine, and Oil Days. On these days the fast is relaxed to permit fish with backbones, in addition to alcoholic beverages and olive oil. There are certain days of the Holy Week cycle that have special fasting rules. Great and Holy Thursday (April 13, this year) is observed as a Wine and Oil Day due to the commemoration of the institution of the Eucharist. Great and Holy Saturday (April 15, this year) is observed as a Strict Fast Day the only Saturday of the year kept as a strict fast; however, wine (but not oil) is permitted. Additional Notes: 1. Meals for the fast should follow the dietary restrictions and be cooked simply. Portions should be smaller than usual. 2. Fasting on the weekdays of the first week of Great Lent is especially severe. The strictest observance would be to take only two meals during this week one on Wednesday evening and one on Friday evening after the services scheduled for those nights keeping Pure Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday as absolute fasts (i.e., no food whatsoever). For many this is impracticable. A good starting place to work towards the strict observance is to keep the first day of Great Lent, Pure Monday, as an absolute fast and to limit meals on the other days. 3. It is a pious practice to observe Great and Holy Friday as an absolute fast. If one does not have the strength to do this, it is good to abstain from food until after venerating the epitaphios during Vespers on this day. 4. If you have a medical condition that requires you to relax the fasting guidelines, then do so. 5. Before you attempt to strictly follow the fasting guidelines, consult with Fr. Gregory. It is very easy to lose sight of the fact that fasting is merely a means to an end (that is, our salvation) and not an end in itself. 6. Generally speaking, children and elderly people are allowed to relax the fast under the guidance of their spiritual father. 6

8 Lazarus Saturday and Palm Sunday The week following the Sunday of Saint Mary of Egypt is called Palm or Branch Week. At the Tuesday services of this week the Church recalls that Jesus friend Lazarus has died and that the Lord is going to raise him from the dead (Jn 11). As the days continue toward Saturday, the Church, in its hymns and verses, continues to follow Christ towards Bethany to the tomb of Lazarus. On Friday evening, the eve of the celebration of the Resurrection of Lazarus, the great and saving forty days of Great Lent are formally brought to an end: Having accomplished the forty days for the benefit of our souls, we pray to Thee, O Lover of Man, that we may see the holy week of Thy passion, that in it we may glorify Thy greatness and Thine unspeakable plan of salvation for our sake... (Vespers Hymn). Lazarus Saturday is a paschal celebration. It is the only time in the entire Church Year that the resurrectional service of Sunday is celebrated on another day. At the liturgy of Lazarus Saturday, the Church glorifies Christ as the Resurrection and the Life who, by raising Lazarus, has confirmed the universal resurrection of mankind even before His own suffering and death. By raising Lazarus from the dead before Thy passion, Thou didst confirm the universal resurrection, O Christ God! Like the children with the branches of victory, we cry out to Thee, O Vanquisher of Death: Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord! (Troparion). Christ the Joy, the Truth and the Light of All, the Life of the world and its Resurrection has appeared in his goodness to those on earth. He has become the Image of our Resurrection, granting divine forgiveness to all (Kontakion). At the Divine Liturgy of Lazarus Saturday the baptismal verse from Galatians: As many as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ (Gal 3.27) replaces the Thrice-holy Hymn thus indicating the resurrectional character of the celebration, and the fact that Lazarus Saturday was once among the few great baptismal days in the Orthodox Church Year. Because of the resurrection of Lazarus from the dead, Christ was hailed by the masses as the long-expected Messiah-King of Israel. Thus, in fulfillment of the prophecies of the Old Testament, He entered Jerusalem, the City of the King, riding on the colt of an ass (Zech 9.9; Jn 12.12). The crowds greeted Him with branches in their hands and called out to Him with shouts of praise: Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! The Son of David! The King of Israel! Because of this glorification by the people, the priests and scribes were finally driven to destroy Him, to put Him to death (Lk 19.47; Jn 11.53, 12.10). The feast of Christ s triumphal Entry into Jerusalem, Palm Sunday, is one of the twelve major feasts of the Church. The services of this Sunday follow directly from those of Lazarus Saturday. The church building continues to be vested in resurrectional splendor, filled with hymns which continually repeat the Hosanna offered to Christ as the Messiah-King who comes in the name of God the Father for the salvation of the world. The main troparion of Palm Sunday is the same one sung on Lazarus Saturday. It is sung at all of the services, and is used at the Divine Liturgy as the third antiphon which follows the other special psalm verses which are sung as the liturgical antiphons in the place of those normally used. The second troparion of the feast, as well as the kontakion and the other verses and hymns, 8
9 all continue to glorify Christ s triumphal manifestation six days before the Passover when he will give himself at the Supper and on the Cross for the life of the world. Today the grace of the Holy Spirit has gathered us together. Let us all take up Thy cross and say: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest! (First Verse of Vespers). When we were buried with Thee in baptism, O Christ God, we were made worthy of eternal life by Thy resurrection. Now we praise Thee and sing: Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord! (Second Troparion). Sitting on Thy throne in heaven, and carried on a foal on earth, O Christ God, accept the praise of angels and the songs of children who sing: BIessed is he who comes to recall Adam!(Kontakion). At the vigil of the feast of Palm Sunday the prophecies of the Old Testament about the Messiah-King are read together with the Gospel accounts of the entry of Christ into Jerusalem. At Matins branches are blessed which the people carry throughout the celebration as the sign of their own glorification of Jesus as Saviour and King. These branches are usually palms, or, in the Slavic churches, pussy willows which came to be customary because of their availability and their early blossoming in the springtime. As the people carry their branches and sing their songs to the Lord on Palm Sunday, they are judged together with the Jerusalem crowd. For it was the very same voices which cried Hosanna to Christ, which, a few days later, cried Crucify Him! Thus in the liturgy of the Church the lives of men continue to be judged as they hail Christ with the branches of victory and enter together with Him into the days of His voluntary passion. 14 Coffee Sponsorship It is amazing how a modest offering of pastries and coffee after Liturgy on Sundays can provide the spark for so much fellowship and community feeling! Our Sunday coffee hours not only give us a chance to visit with friends, but also to exercise our philoxenia or hospitality, towards our guest and newcomers to the parish, who have just participated in the Divine Liturgy with us. Typically, our coffee hours are hosted by Philoptochos and various ministries. But families or groups of friends may consider hosting one as well. Consider hosting a coffee hour to commemorate an anniversary, memorial, birthday, name day etc. Philoptochos will continue to prepare coffee, guide host and supply paper products. Suggestions for refreshments are fruit, veggies, cookies, pastries, croissants and bagels. Fruit juices are great for children and non-coffee drinkers. Fasting Day suggestions are nuts, hummus, veggies, halva, jello, dried or fresh fruit, chips and salsa and salads. It is recommended to have at least 4 people to help set up, serve and cleanup. If anyone would like to just sponsor items Philoptochos will serve. Please consider hosting. It is a small investment to bring a great deal of joy to our Church Family! Please Contact Philoptochos President Eleni White to schedule your date to host coffee hour! THE KNITTING ANGELS will meet Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at 10AM - Kontos Hall Please feel free to join us. Donations of yarn of any color, are greatly appreciated. A big THANK YOU to all our Volunteers! 18 The Inner meaning of Palm Sunday Philippians 4:4 9 John 12:1 18 In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. My beloved Brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ, whenever you see a big event, there's something, an inner meaning to it that is not immediately obvious. Big things are understood by little things. Tangible things are understood by intangible things. The visible is apprehended by the invisible. So this great event that occurred, our Lord entering Jerusalem, fulfilling so many prophecies, showing us His demeanor, His beauty, how we should live, telling us of the coming of the Gentiles. All of these things can only be understood if we have an inner life. Most of the people who saw Him in the crowd only saw what was visible. They were excited because He had raised Lazarus. That was quite an event. Perhaps some had heard that He had made other people rise from the dead but not after four days. In that climate after four days the body would stink and would already be decomposing. So this was truly a marvelous thing. So, many came, as the Scripture says, just to see this. They didn't understand. That was not the meaning of this day. Then they saw Him, what an incredible sight, a person seated on the colt, the foal of an ass walking in to Jerusalem, people throwing palm leaves down and their garments down and crying out, Hosanna in the highest. This is not the meaning of the day. Certainly, there are things, great deep theological things from our Lord's actions that can be understood but only if we understand the meaning of this day. The epistle tells us the meaning of this day, right at the very beginning. Paul says, "Rejoice in the Lord always and again I say rejoice." Then he defines what "rejoice" means. It doesn't mean crying "Hosanna in the highest" and throwing garments in the way and cutting down palm trees or palms. No. It has to do with being careful for nothing; in other words, don't care about things of the world. Care only about God. "In everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God." And then what happens? "The peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." And this is also rejoicing in the Lord. He says, "Brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report, if there be any virtue, if there be any praise, think on these things." This is the meaning of this day. Our Lord came to Jerusalem to fulfill a mission. And He fulfilled this mission. But it is not accomplished in every man, because not every man pays attention to the mission. Some see the spectacle of a Man on the colt, the foal of an ass. Some see the spectacle of someone who could raise a man four days dead. Others see the way to peace, the Way to purity, the only way to hope. The only way to understand this day is to live in the spirit of it. Our Lord, the King of the ages, came to Jerusalem to be executed as a criminal, in order that He could teach us humility and the right way to live. He taught us and He accomplished for us the right way to live. As God, He showed us all things. As Man, He accomplished what He taught us so that we, as human beings, can accomplish what we have been taught. But we can only understand it if we apply ourselves to struggle to become good. It really is all about that. It's always about that. I have a little saying you guys have heard, I think; I've written it down before: It's always about morality, always. Our Lord coming into Jerusalem, it's about morality, not about the event, but about the inner meaning, showing us how meek He was, how holy, how ready to die for us He was, how much He loved us and how much we 18
19 should love Him in return. Christianity is morality. It's becoming better. I've told you many times, there's darkness in us, a lot of darkness. If you don't feel this darkness, then you are lost, because it's there. Jesus Christ came to bring light. Remember at the very beginning of His mission, it's said that He went into the land of Zebulun and Naphtali and went, a light to shine forth among the Gentiles. He came to bring light to us. He came to Jerusalem to bring light to us. He allowed Himself to be executed to bring light to us. He taught us those sublime words, the true meaning of the Ten Commandments in the Beatitudes, to bring light to us. We cannot see this light unless we live in it. It's not about throwing palm leaves down on the ground. It's about giving Him our heart. Every time I read these Scriptures for this day, I see this great contrast. So much of what the Lord did was not understood. Holiness was among them, and they were excited, and yet only a few days later they would say: Crucify Him, crucify Him, we have no king but Cesar. Why did they do such a foolish thing? How could they change so quickly? It wasn't that they changed quickly. It was that they never changed. They saw Christ as an event, as something interesting, something that could perhaps make them victorious over the Romans or heal their mother or their sister or their brother of some disease. But they didn't see what He taught them. And to this day, we who bear the name Christian often do not see; let's be honest now. We don't rejoice in the Lord always. I'm not talking about the emotional feeling of happiness. A lot of times in the Christian life, there's a lot of sadness inside. Let's rejoice because we're changing. Do you feel a change going on in you? I hope so. Because if you don't, this day means nothing, the Resurrection means nothing. It's nothing unless we change. It means nothing unless we become what we're not now. I hope none of you are satisfied with the kind of person you are now; you shouldn't be; it's not what you were born for. You were born for holiness, perfection, beauty. The only way to holiness, perfection, beauty is Jesus Christ. Not just to praise Him with branches, but to live as He lived in our life. That is the meaning of this day. May God help us to live according to it. Amen. From Fr. 21 Preparation For Holy Confession Department of Religious Education The gift of God's forgiveness is received through private prayer, corporate worship, the disciplines of prayer and fasting, penitential services and above all through the sacrament of Holy Confession. The value of Holy Confession is twofold. First, through this sacramental act of the ordained priest and the Christian believer we have the assurance of divine forgiveness, according to the words of Christ (Jn 20:23). Secondly, Holy Confession provides the opportunity to talk about one's deep concerns, to receive counsel and to be encouraged toward spiritual growth, all of which are universally recognized as extremely beneficial to personal life. Holy Confession is appropriate whenever an Orthodox Christian feels the need for it. It is also a part of our total spiritual preparation during the fast periods leading up to the great feasts of Easter, Christmas, the Falling Asleep of the Theotokos and the Feast of Twelve Apostles. However, Holy Confession is especially necessary: when a serious sin has been committed; when a habitual sin has overwhelmed a Christian, or when a Christian has stopped growing spiritually and needs a reexamination of priorities. We confess our sins to God and the power of forgiveness is God's. However, the gift of God's forgiveness, although assured, is not magical. It does not automatically spare us from spiritual struggle - the continual vigilance against evil and the unceasing warfare against sin. Holy Confession will bear fruits in the Spirit only when the believer hates evil, utterly rejects sin and patiently cultivates positive habits of the life in Christ. "So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to Christ Jesus. Do not yield your members to sin as instruments of wicked ness, but yield yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life" (Rm 6:11, 13) How can one prepare for Holy Confession? Preparation for Holy Confession is a prayerful examination of feelings, thoughts, words, acts, attitudes, habits, values, priorities, goals, direction and way of life. This prayerful selfexamination includes not only the personal religious life, but also family relationships, social activities, job conduct, business dealings, political commitments and even recreational pursuits, because our entire existence should be lived in under the light of the Holy Spirit is not to condemn ourselves, but to affirm our true selves in Christ who has given us access to God's mercy and forgiveness and who has taught us to live for God's glory. Pray and think and your confession over several days. Ask God to help you perceive your sins and to make a thorough confession of them. Sometime before the sacrament of Holy Confession, offer selected prayers from the following Confessional Prayers, Psalm 51 or the following prayer of repentance: Prayer of Repentance O Lord my God, I confess that I have sinned against You in thought, word and deed. I have also omitted to do what Your holy law requires of me. But now with repentance and contrition I turn again to Your love and mercy. I entreat You to forgive me all my transgression and to cleanse me from all my sins. Lord, fill my heart with the light of Your truth. Strengthen my will by Your grace. Teach me both to desire and to do only what pleases You. Amen.
Save the Date!
