2 Beloved Parishioners, O Fashioner of all creation, who made seasons and years by Your own authority, bless the crown of the year with Your goodness, O Lord, and preserve our rulers and Your city in peace, at the intercession of the Theotokos, and save us. Apolytikion of Indiction As we prepare to celebrate the beginning of a new ecclesiastical year with Divine Liturgy and Blessing of the Waters this Friday, September 1, our thoughts turn to the many activities our parish offers. Of course, the foundation of them all is prayer. That is why you will find many services throughout this new ecclesiastical year. We are endeavoring to make it as easy as possible for you to quickly find all the services being offered on a weekly basis, including our website. Please also see the weekly bulletin and our Facebook page. The second pillar is religious education, and it is not just for the children. Besides Sunday School, we have also have three Bible studies for adults: a Greek-language study, a study for young mothers, and a general Bible study on Wednesday nights from 7:00-8:30, immediately after a Paraklesis service to the Mother Holy Mother of God from 6:00-7:00 (our first pillar, prayer). We are also organizing roundtable discussions on current topics of interest for various Sundays throughout the year, hoping to answer your questions about how to apply our faith to the practicalities of everyday life. The third pillar in our holistic Orthodox view of faith is Christian fellowship, which we enjoy in various ways throughout our community. In addition to the many activities and programs we already have, we hope to add more community or family nights. As this new ecclesiastical year begins, I would encourage you to see how your particular talents can be offered to extend Christ s ministry to today s world, and to strengthen your own spiritual formation. Please do not hesitate to speak with me, our new Youth Director Alex Limberatos, or anyone in the office to learn more about the many things our parish offers for our development as Orthodox Christians. In closing, let me take this opportunity to thank the entire Parish Council, Alex, the office staff, and the many volunteers of the parish ministries here at St. George s for their tireless efforts in making our church not just a facility for events but a home for our families. And, finally, let me thank all of you for your support of our St. George Community through your annual Stewardship, which allows all these ministries to become a reality. Come to The Little Church! Christ tells us to make Disciples of All Nations, but did you know that many of you have Disciples waiting in your own home?! Parenting is a sacred vocation and the family exists as its own kind of parish that requires work. Along the way we ll face obstacles that need to be navigated through and we ll have questions that need answers. But in the face of the challenges we see in the home we need not be alone or without help: we have the Church. I ve taken amazing classes related to family life, met some amazing families and parents, and I m constantly reading and learning about faith and family life. Together we can learn, help each other out, and discuss both the blessings and difficulties at home with the new Family & Parenting Ministry which I d like to call: The Little Church. Please sign-up and join us for this brand-new informal seminar as we discuss topics and challenges related to parenting, marriage, and growing together in our Orthodox Faith as a household. Project Mexico! Project Mexico is an Orthodox Christian home building ministry stationed in Tijuana, Mexico. Since 1988, Project Mexico & St. Innocent Orphanage has been building secure, safe and weathertight homes for some of the most impoverished families in northern Mexico. Built strictly by volunteer labor, these homes provide families economic security and hope for a brighter future. While serving these families, the volunteers discover that they have been transformed. Through their service to others, they realize that they have received much more than they had given. While serving a family through the homebuilding program, volunteers also have the opportunity to witness and connect with the orphan ministry as they live on St. Innocent s Ranch with the youthand full-time volunteers. Project Mexico is a week long commitment and requires a $540 participation donation. Liturgy on the Streets When the priest dismisses the people after Liturgy and says Let us go forth in peace... he is not telling the people that the worship is almost over and that they are free to do as they please. He is telling the people to go forward and continue the work they have begun! Although we understand liturgy to mean our primary form of worship, liturgy literally means work of the people and this work takes many forms. 4

5 Liturgy on the Streets is a program wherein we go out to where the homeless are, interact with them, and invite them to eat with us or give them something to eat. During this meal we get to know them, listen to their story, and offer our Christian hospitality to them. This amazing ministry of feeding the poor and being a witness to those who have been marginalized takes a great deal of humility and maturity to do, but through the participation of our parish we can fulfill Christ s commandment to feed the poor. 6 ΑΠΟΣΤΟΛΟΣ Κυριακή ΙΒ Επιστολών, Αποστ. Ανάγνωσμα: Κορ. ιε 1-11 Αδελφοί, σας θυμίζω το χαρμόσυνο μήνυμα που σας έφερα με το κήρυγμά μου. Αυτό το μήνυμα το δεχτήκατε, σ αυτό παραμείνατε σταθεροί, μ αυτό και σώζεστε, αν βέβαια μένετε προσκολλημένοι σ αυτό, όπως ακριβώς σας το κήρυξα, εκτός εάν μάταια πιστέψατε. Σας παρέδωσα τη διδασκαλία που είχα κι εγώ παραλάβει και που έχει πρωταρχική σημασία: ότι δηλαδή ο Χριστός πέθανε, σύμφωνα με τις Γραφές, για τις αμαρτίες μας, ότι ενταφιάστηκε και ότι, σύμφωνα με τις Γραφές αναστήθηκε την τρίτη ημέρα και ότι εμφανίστηκε στον Κηφά, έπειτα στους Δώδεκα. Έπειτα εμφανίστηκε σε περισσότερους από πεντακόσιους αδελφούς συγχρόνως, από τους οποίους μερικοί πέθαναν, οι περισσότεροι όμως είναι ακόμα στη ζωή. Έπειτα εμφανίστηκε στον Ιάκωβο, έπειτα σε όλους τους αποστόλους. Τελευταία από όλους, εμφανίστηκε και σ εμένα σαν σε έκτρωμα. Γιατί εγώ πραγματικά είμαι ο τελευταίος ανάμεσα σε όλους τους αποστόλους, εγώ δεν είμαι άξιος ούτε να ονομάζομαι απόστολος, γιατί καταδίωξα την εκκλησία του Θεού. Με τη χάρη όμως του Θεού έγινα αυτό που έγινα, κι αυτή η χάρη προς εμένα δεν υπήρξε άκαρπη: εργάστηκα περισσότερο απ όλους τους αποστόλους, όχι βέβαια εγώ, αλλά η χάρη του Θεού που με συνοδεύει. Είτε εγώ, λοιπόν, είτε εκείνοι, αυτά κηρύττουμε και αυτά πιστέψατε. EPISTLE: St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 15:1-11 Brethren, I would remind you in what terms I preached to you the gospel, which you received, in which you stand, by which you are saved, if you hold it fast -- unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. For I am the least of the apostles, unfit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God which is with me. Του λέει ο νεαρός: «Όλα αυτά τα τηρώ από πολύ μικρός σε τι υστερώ ακόμα»; Του είπε ο Ιησούς: «Αν θέλεις να γίνεις τέλειος, πήγαινε πούλησε τα υπάρχοντά σου και δώσε τα χρήματα στους φτωχούς, και θα έχεις θησαυρό κοντά στο Θεό, κι έλα να με ακολουθήσεις». Μόλις άκουσε την απάντηση ο νεαρός, έφυγε λυπημένος, γιατί είχε μεγάλη περιουσία. Κι ο Ιησούς είπε στους μαθητές του: «Σας βεβαιώνω πως δύσκολα θα μπει πλούσιος στη βασιλεία του Θεού. Και σας το επαναλαμβάνω: Είναι ευκολότερο να περάσει καμήλα από βελονότρυπα, παρά να μπει πλούσιος στη βασιλεία του Θεού».Όταν το άκουσαν οι μαθητές του, ένιωσαν μεγάλη κατάπληξη κι έλεγαν: «Τότε ποιος μπορεί να σωθεί;» Ο Ιησούς τους κοίταξε και είπε: «Αυτό είναι αδύνατο για τους ανθρώπους για το Θεό όμως όλα είναι δυνατά». 6

And he said to him, "Why do you call me good? One there is who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments." He said to him, "Which?" And Jesus said, "You shall not kill, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother, and You shall love your neighbor as yourself." The young man said to him, "All these I have observed; what do I still lack?" Jesus said to him, "If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me." When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful; for he had great possessions. And Jesus said to his disciples, "Truly, I say to you, it will be hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." But Jesus looked at them and said to them, "With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." Αιωνία η μνήμη αυτών! Did you know this about Memorial Services and Kolyva : Memorial services may not be chanted from the Saturday of Lazarus through the Sunday of Thomas on any Feast days of the Lord or any Feast days of the Theotokos. Koliva is boiled wheat with a combination of some or all of the following ingredients: powdered sugar, almonds, ground walnuts, sesame seeds, cinnamon, pomegranate seeds, raisins, anise, parsley and more. Koliva is made for memorials, typically on Saturdays of the Souls, and according to different traditions, the day of a Funeral, the 40 th day after death, 3 rd month, 6 th month, 9 th month, annually, and even sometimes just on big anniversaries only, such as 5 years, 10 years, etc. You may also have Kolyva on the funeral day but ONLY boiled wheat no sweetness is added. Sweetness is added on the 40day memorial and thereafter. In John s Gospel we find this quote, Christ said, Unless a wheat grain falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. (John 12:24) As Orthodox Christians we are awaiting the 2 nd Coming and the General Resurrection of the dead, through Christ we have Life! But, remembering the memory of our deceased beloved ones is an opportunity to pray for the souls of the departed as well as a way to help us heal from the death. Memorials when planning your memorial service please make sure that you contact the office and give the names of the reposed so that Father Gregory has them in advance. Beginning with the new ecclesiastic year, we will have an improved system to greet visitors to the office and church and accommodate them. We will have a reception area in the Kontos Event Center lobby to help people schedule events, appointments, fill out forms, get information about the church and ministries, and we will also provide access to the church upon request for prayer, tours, or bookstore shopping. Please volunteer for an area which interests you and in which you are skilled. The schedule will be flexible. We will have 2 hour and 4 hour shifts available. Please contact Tina Wilson at to choose your preferred time. The goal is to have volunteer training in mid August and have volunteers in place shortly after that. Your church really needs you to contribute your talent. Whenever, you give time and talent, the church saves money and makes you a valued steward of St. George. 13 Tickets available on Sunday s after Church Service during coffee fellowship hour in the Kontos Community Hall PRAYER PRAY EVERY Morning and Evening at a Minimum Remember to make your prayer life one that is a firm rule and not something that is done occasionally or sporadically. It must be done each day morning and evening at a minimum. You need to commit to follow your rule each and every day. Think about certain personal hygiene tasks such as brushing your teeth that you do each day out of habit. You don t forget to do them each day. Your prayer needs to become a habit as strong as these. Prayer must become a daily habit that you never forget. Prayer is essential for the health of our soul Just like the hygiene activities that we do for the health of our body. 13

14 Ο ευαγγελιστής Ματθαίος στη συγκεκριμένη ευαγγελική περικοπή μας μεταφέρει το διάλογο του Ιησού Χριστού με ένα πλούσιο νεαρό ο οποίος ρωτά τον Ιησού Χριστό τι πρέπει να κάνει για να κερδίσει την αιώνια ζωή. Ο Κύριος λοιπόν απαντά στο νεαρό αυτό άντρα λέγοντάς του ότι για να κερδίσει στην αιώνια ζωή πρέπει να ακολουθεί κάποιες εντολές όπως το μη σκοτώσεις, μη μοιχεύσεις, μην κλέψεις, μην ψευδομαρτυρήσεις, τίμα τον πατέρα και τη μητέρα σου και αγάπα τον πλησίον σου όπως τον εαυτό σου. Ο νεαρός χωρίς να χάσει χρόνο λέει στον Ιησού ότι αυτά τα τηρεί και τα τηρούσε από την παιδική του ηλικία. Τότε ο Κύριος δε μένει εκεί ζητά κάτι άλλο από τον πλούσιο άντρα. Του ζητά να πουλήσει όλη την περιουσία του και να τον ακολουθήσει, τότε ο νεαρός φεύγει γιατί αυτό που του ζητούσε ο Κύριος δεν μπορούσε να το κάνει πράξη γιατί η περιουσία του ήταν πολύ μεγάλη. Τότε ο Κύριος απευθύνεται στους μαθητές του και τους λεει ότι πολύ δύσκολα θα κερδίσει κάποιος πλούσιος τη βασιλεία των ουρανών και συγκεκριμένα λεει ότι πιο εύκολα περνά καμήλα από την βελονότρυπα παρά να κερδίσει πλούσιος τη βασιλεία του Θεού. Όταν αντέδρασαν οι μαθητές τους εξήγησε ο Ιησούς ότι μπορεί κάποια πράγματα να είναι αδύνατα για τους ανθρώπους για το Θεό όμως είναι όλα δυνατά. Ο Ιησούς Χριστός στην ερώτηση του νεαρού τι να κάνει για να κερδίσει τη βασιλεία των ουρανών απάντησε αρχικά με κάποιες εντολές από το Δεκάλογο που δόθηκε από το Θεό στο Μωϋσή στο Όρος Σινά. Πρόκειται για το γραπτό νόμο του Θεού ο οποίος ρύθμιζε τη θρησκευτική, την κοινωνική, την οικογενειακή και την ηθική ζωή των ανθρώπων ώστε να εκπληρώνεται η αρετή και να αποφεύγεται η αμαρτία. Οι Δέκα Εντολές, ήταν γραμμένες πάνω σε δύο λίθινες πλάκες, χαραγμένες από τον ίδιο το Θεό αλλά τις άκουσε και ο ίδιος ο Μωυσής ως αυτήκοος μάρτυρας πάνω στο όρος Σινά. Οι τέσσερις πρώτες εντολές αφορούν τα καθήκοντα των ανθρώπων απέναντι στο Θεό. «1.Εγώ ειμί Κύριος ο Θεός σου. Ουκ έσονταί σοι θεοί έτεροι πλήν εμού, ου ποιήσεις σεαυτώ είδωλον, ουδέ παντός ομοίωμα. Ου προσκυνήσεις αυτοίς, ουδέ μη λατρεύσεις αυτοίς. 2.Ου λήψει το όνομα Κυρίου του Θεού σου επί ματαίω ου γαρ μη καθαρίση Κύριος ο Θεός σου τον λαμβάνοντα το όνομα αυτού επί ματαίω. 3.Μνήσθητι την ημέραν των σαββάτων αγιάζειν αυτήν. Εξ ημέρας εργά και ποιήσεις πάντα τα έργα σου. Τη δε ημέρα τη εβδόμη σάββατα Κυρίω τω Θεώ σου, ου ποιήσεις εν αυτή παν έργον». (Εξ. 20, 2-11). Οι τέσσερις αυτές εντολές αφορούν τη σχέση των ανθρώπων με το Θεό, είναι το θεολογικό μέρος του Δεκαλόγου. Οι υπόλοιπες έξι αφορούν στην κοινωνική και στη γενικότερη ηθική μας συμπεριφορά, τη συμπεριφορά μας απέναντι στους συνανθρώπους μας. «5.Τίμα τον πατέρα σου και τη μητέρα σου, ίνα εύ σοι γένηται, και ίνα μακροχρόνιος γένη επί της γής της αγαθής, ης Κύριος ο Θεός σου δίδωσί σοι. 6.Ου μοιχεύσεις. 7.Ου κλέψεις. 8.Ου φονεύσεις. 9.Ου ψευδομαρτυρήσεις κατά του πλησίον σου μαρτυρίαν ψευδή. 10.Ουκ επιθυμήσεις όσα τω πλησίον σου εστί». (Εξ. 20:12-17) Οι δέκα εντολές μας δείχνουν τα όρια μέσα στα οποία μπορούν να αναπτυχθούν οι ορθές σχέσεις με το Θεό και τους συνανθρώπους μας. Ο Ιησούς Χριστός τόνισε το πόσο σημαντική είναι η αγάπη προς το Θεό και η αγάπη προς τον πλησίον με μια διπλή κατεύθυνση που θυμίζει το Δεκάλογο όπου όπως αναφέραμε οι τέσσερις πρώτες εντολές αφορούν καθήκοντα απέναντι στο Θεό ενώ οι υπόλοιπες έξι αναφέρονται στη συμπεριφορά μας προς τους συνανθρώπους μας. «Διδάσκαλε, ποια εντολή μεγάλη εν τω νόμω; Ο δε Ιησούς έφη αυτώ αγαπήσεις Κύριον τον Θεόν σου εν όλη τη καρδία σου και εν όλη τη ψυχή σου και εν όλη τη διανοία σου. Αύτη εστί πρώτη και μεγάλη εντολή. Δευτέρα δε ομοία αυτή αγαπήσεις τον πλησίον σου ως σεαυτόν. Εν ταύταις ταις δυσίν εντολαίς όλος ο νόμος και οι προφήται κρέμανται».(μτθ. 22: 34-40). Ο Ιησούς Χριστός στην ερώτηση του νέου τι πρέπει να κάνει για να κερδίσει την αιώνια ζωή απαντά, «μη σκοτώσεις, μη μοιχεύσεις, μην κλέψεις, μην ψευδομαρτυρήσεις, τίμα τον πατέρα και τη μητέρα σου και αγάπα τον πλησίον σου όπως τον εαυτό σου», αυτές είναι κάποιες από τις εντολές του Δεκαλόγου και με αυτό τον τρόπο τονίζει τη σημαντικότητα της τηρήσεως του Νόμου, πολύ σημαντικό για να κερδίσει ο πλούσιος νέος τη Βασιλεία 14

15 των Ουρανών είναι η τήρηση των Νόμων, όμως ο Ιησούς δε μένει μόνο εκεί όταν ο νέος απάντά ότι αυτά που του ζήτησε ο Κύριος τα τηρεί από νεαρή ηλικία. Ζητά από το νέο και κάτι άλλο το οποίο δεν αποδέχεται, του ζητά να πωλήσει τα υπάρχοντά του και να ακολουθήσει τον Ιησού. Δε μένει μόνο στο λόγο του Νόμου ο Ιησούς Χριστός αλλά ζητά από το νέο να θυσιάσει τον πλούτο του το οποίο όμως δεν αποδέχεται. Γνώριζε ο Κύριος ότι ο νέος ήταν πολύ προσεχτικός στη ζωή του όσο αφορούσε τους Νόμους και αγωνιζόταν να τηρεί τις εντολές του Θεού, του πρόσθεσε λοιπόν την τελευταία αυτή εντολή, διότι ήθελε να τον οδηγήσει στο δρόμο της τέλειας αγάπης και να τον ελευθερώσει από την προσκόλληση που είχε στον πλούτο. Έχουμε εδώ, με την εντολή του Κυρίου προς το νέο, το πέρασμα από το Νόμο στη Χριστολογία, από την Παλαιά στην Καινή Διαθήκη. Με την εντολή του Κυρίου τα επιφανειακά και σκιώδη παραγγέλματα του Νόμου προσλαμβάνουν το βάθος της ευαγγελικής πνευματικής νομοθεσίας, είναι η διαδοχή του ατελούς Νόμου από το τέλειο Ευαγγέλιο. Με την έλευση του Κυρίου στον κόσμο πέρασε η περίοδος του νόμου και των νομικών διατάξεων και πλέον οι άνθρωποι καλούμαστε να ζήσουμε την καινή εν Χριστώ ζωή όπως και ο νέος της περικοπής. Ο ευαγγελιστής Ιωάννης μας λέει «ο νόμος δια Μωυσέως εδόθη, η χάρις και η αλήθεια δια Ιησού Χριστού εγένετο». (Ιω. 1:17). Δεν πρέπει να μένουμε στη νομολογία αλλά πρέπει να πετύχουμε την ένωσή μας με το Χριστό, αυτό εννοεί όταν καλεί το νέο να τον ακολουθήσει, «ζω δε ουκέτι εγώ, ζη δε εν εμοί Χριστός». (Γαλ. 2: 20). Ο νέος είχε την ψευδή ελπίδα ότι ο Κύριος θα του έλεγε ότι τηρώντας τους νόμους του Δεκαλόγου θα μπορούσε εύκολα να κερδίσει τη Βασιλεία των Ουρανών. Έτσι έχουμε την αποχώρηση του νέου όταν ο Ιησούς του ζητά να πωλήσει όλη την περιουσία του για να τον ακολουθήσει. Χρειάζεται να θυσιάσει ο νέος κάτι που γι αυτόν είναι πολύ σημαντικό και δεν το κάνει. Νόμιζε ο νέος ότι τηρούσε όλες τις εντολές που του ανέφερε ο Ιησούς, και μια εντολή που σίγουρα δεν τηρούσε ήταν η αγάπη προς τον πλησίον γιατί πως μπορούσε να αγαπάει τον πλησίον του, τον κάθε φτωχό και άρρωστο, όταν κρατούσε τα πλούτη του αποκλειστικά για τον εαυτό του; Γιατί δε μπορούσε να θυσιάσει από τα πολλά που είχε για αυτούς που δεν είχαν καθόλου; Ζητούσε θυσιαστική αγάπη ο Κύριος από το νέο, την ίδια θυσιαστική αγάπη που ο ίδιος έκανε πράξη με τη σταυρική του θυσία. Αγαπούσε τον πλησίον του μέχρι το σημείο εκείνο που η αγάπη αυτή δεν του ζητούσε θυσίες. Δε μένει στη νομολογία ο Κύριος αλλά τονίζει τη θυσία που πρέπει ο καθένας μας να κάνει. Ο Ιησούς απευθύνεται στους μαθητές του και τους λέει ότι πιο εύκολο είναι να περάσει καμήλα από τη βελονότρυπα παρά πλούσιος στη Βασιλεία των Ουρανών. Στην αντίδραση των μαθητών για το ποιος τελικά θα μπορέσει να κερδίσει την Βασιλεία των Ουρανών ο Κύριος τους ξεκαθαρίζει ότι τίποτα δεν αποκλείεται αφού όλα όσα δεν είναι δυνατά για τους ανθρώπους είναι δυνατά για το Θεό. Δε σημαίνει ότι όλοι οι άνθρωποι οι οποίοι μπορεί να έχουν περιουσία πρέπει να την πωλήσουν για να ακολουθήσουν τον Ιησού. Δεν είναι ο πλούτος εμπόδιο για όλους τους ανθρώπους αλλά η εντολή για πώληση των υπαρχόντων του δόθηκε μόνο στο συγκεκριμένο πλούσιο γιατί ήθελε να τον βοηθήσει να απεξαρτηθεί από τη φιλαργυρία. Το πάθος του συγκεκριμένου ανθρώπου ήταν η φιλαργυρία και ακριβώς αυτό το πάθος ζήτησε ο Ιησούς να αρνηθεί, κάθε άνθρωπος έχει διαφορετικό πάθος που τον δένει στη γη και δεν τον αφήνει να αγαπήσει ελεύθερα και δυνατά το Θεό και τη Βασιλεία του, αυτά λοιπόν πρέπει να αρνηθούμε για να κερδίσουμε τη Βασιλεία των Ουρανών. Ας προσέξουμε λοιπόν μήπως κι εμείς σήμερα γινόμαστε πολλές φορές όπως τον πλούσιο νέο της συγκεκριμένης ευαγγελικής περικοπής. Τηρούμε το θέλημα του Θεού αλλά μέχρι εκεί που δεν έρχεται σε αντίθεση με το προσωπικό μας συμφέρον, τηρούμε το «Νόμο» όπως το νέο της περικοπής φτάνει να μην μας ζητηθεί να αρνηθούμε τα πάθη και τις αδυναμίες μας για να ακολουθήσουμε τον Κύριο. 16 St. Phanourius Commemorated on August 27 We know nothing for certain about the background of Saint Phanourius, nor exactly when he lived. Tradition says that when the island of Rhodes had been conquered by Moslems, the new ruler of the island wished to rebuild the walls of the city, which had been damaged in previous wars. Several ruined buildings were near the fortress, and stone from these buildings was used to repair the walls at the end of the fifteenth century, or the beginning of the sixteenth.while working on the fortress, the Moslems uncovered the ruins of a beautiful church. Several icons, most of them badly damaged, were found on the floor. One icon, of Saint Phanourius, looked as if it had been painted that very day. The local bishop, whose name was Nilus, was called to see the icon. It said, Saint Phanourius. The saint is depicted as a young soldier holding a cross in his right hand. On the upper part of the cross is a lighted taper. Twelve scenes from his life are shown around the border of the icon. These scenes show him being questioned by an official, being beaten with stones by soldiers, stretched out on the ground while soldiers whip him, then having his sides raked with iron hooks. He is also shown locked up in prison, standing before the official again, being burned with candles, tied to a rack, thrown to the wild animals, and being crushed by a large rock. The remaining scenes depict him standing before idols holding burning coals in his hands, while a demon stands by lamenting his defeat by the saint, and finally, the saint stands in the midst of a fire with his arms raised in prayer. These scenes clearly revealed that the saint was a martyr. Bishop Nilus sent representatives to the Moslem ruler, asking that he be permitted to restore the church. Permission was denied, so the bishop went to Constantinople and there he obtained a decree allowing him to rebuild the church. At that time, there was no Orthodox bishop on the island of Crete. Since Crete was under the control of Venice, there was a Latin bishop. The Venetians refused to allow a successor to be consecrated when an Orthodox bishop died, or for new priests to be ordained, hoping that in time they would be able to convert the Orthodox population to Catholicism. Those seeking ordination were obliged to go to the island of Kythera. It so happened that three young deacons had traveled from Crete to Kythera to be ordained to the holy priesthood. On their way back, they were captured at sea by Moslems who brought them to Rhodes to be sold as slaves. Lamenting their fate, the three new priests wept day and night. While in Rhodes the priests heard of the miracles performed by the holy Great Martyr Phanourius. They began to pray to him with tears, asking to be freed from their captivity. Each of the three had been sold to a different master, and so remained unaware of what the others were doing. By the mercy of God, each of the priests was allowed by his master to pray at the restored church of Saint Phanourius. All three arrived at the same time and prostrated themselves before the icon of the saint, asking to be delivered from the hands of the Hagarenes (Moslems, descendents of Hagar). Somewhat consoled, the priests left the church and returned to their masters. That night Saint Phanourius appeared to the three masters and ordered them to set the priests free so that they could serve the Church, or he would punish them. The Moslems ignored the saint s warning, believing the vision to be the result of sorcery. The cruel masters bound the priests with chains and treated them even worse than before. Then Saint Phanourius went to the priests and freed them from their shackles, promising that they would be freed the next day. Appearing once more to the Moslems, the holy martyr told them severely, If you do not release your slaves by tomorrow, you shall witness the power of God! The next morning, all the inhabitants of the homes where the priests were held awoke to find themselves blind, paralyzed, and in great pain. They considered what they were to do, and so decided to send for the priests. When the three priests arrived, they asked them whether they could heal them. The priests replied, We will pray to God. May His will be done! 16

17 Once more Saint Phanourius appeared to the Hagarenes, ordering them to send to the church a document granting the priests their freedom. He told them that if they refused to do this, they would never recover their sight or health. All three masters wrote letters releasing the priests, and sent the documents to the church, where they were placed before the icon of Saint Phanourius. Before the messengers returned from the church, all those who had been blind and paralyzed were healed. The priests joyfully returned to Crete, carrying with them a copy of the icon of Saint Phanourius. Every year they celebrated the Feast of Saint Phanourius with deep gratitude for their miraculous deliverance. The saint s name sounds similar to the Greek verb phanerono, which means to reveal or to disclose. For this reason, people pray to Saint Phanourius to help them find lost objects. When the object is recovered, they bake a sweet bread and share it with the poor, offering prayers for the salvation of saint s mother. Her name is not known, but according to tradition, she was a sinful woman during her life. Saint Phanourius has promised to help those who pray for his mother in this way.
