1 Ευαγγελισμός της Θεοτόκου Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church Reverend Father Dean J. Dimon Proistamenos 2187 West 14th Street, Cleveland, OH March 11, 2018 Sunday of the Holy Cross On the Third Sunday of Great and Holy Lent, the Orthodox Church commemorates the Precious and Life-Giving Cross of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Services include a special veneration of the Cross, which prepares the faithful for the commemoration of the Crucifixion during Holy Week. The commemoration and ceremonies of the Third Sunday of Lent are closely parallel to the feasts of the Veneration of the Cross (September 14) and the Procession of the Cross (August 1). Not only does the Sunday of the Holy Cross prepare us for commemoration of the Crucifixion, but it also reminds us that the whole of Lent is a period when we are crucified with Christ. As we have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires (Galatians 5:24), and will have mortified ourselves during these forty days of the Fast, the precious and life-giving Cross is now placed before us to refresh our souls and encourage us who may be filled with a sense of bitterness, resentment, and depression. The Cross reminds us of the Passion of our Lord, and by presenting to us His example, it encourages us to follow Him in struggle and sacrifice, being refreshed, assured, and comforted. In other words, we must experience what the Lord experienced during His Passion - being humiliated in a shameful manner. The Cross teaches us that through pain and suffering we shall see the fulfillment of our hopes: the heavenly inheritance and eternal glory. As they who walk on a long and hard way and are bowed down by fatigue find great relief and strengthening under the cool shade of a leafy tree, so do we find comfort, refreshment, and rejuvenation under the Life-giving Cross, which our Fathers planted on this Sunday. Thus, we are fortified and enabled to continue our Lenten journey with a light step, rested and encouraged. Or, as before the arrival of the king, his royal standards, trophies, and emblems of victory come in procession and then the king himself appears in a triumphant parade, jubilant and rejoicing in his victory and filling those under him with joy, so does the Feast of the Cross precede the coming of our King, Jesus Christ. It warns us that He is about to proclaim His victory over death and appear to us in the glory of the Resurrection. His Life-Giving Cross is His royal scepter, and by venerating it we are filled with joy, rendering Him glory. Therefore, we become ready to welcome our King, who shall manifestly triumph over the powers of darkness. The present feast has been placed in the middle of Great Lent for another reason. 2 The Fast can be likened to the spring of Marah whose waters the children of Israel encountered in the wilderness. Continued on page 2 This water was undrinkable due to its bitterness but became sweet when the Holy Prophet Moses dipped the wood into its depth. Likewise, the wood of the Cross sweetens the days of the Fast, which are bitter and often grievous because of our tears. Yet Christ comforts us during our course through the desert of the Fast, guiding and leading us by His hand to the spiritual Jerusalem on high by the power of His Resurrection. Moreover, as the Holy Cross is called the Tree of Life, it is placed in the middle of the Fast, as the ancient tree of life was placed in the middle of the garden of Eden. By this, our Holy Fathers wished to remind us of Adam s gluttony as well as the fact that through this Tree has condemnation been abolished. Therefore, if we bind ourselves to the Holy Cross, we shall never encounter death but shall inherit life eternal. The most common icon associated with the Veneration of the Cross is the same icon used on the Feast of the Veneration of the Cross on September 14. In the icon, Patriarch Macarius is standing in the pulpit elevating the Cross for all to see and venerate. On each side of the Patriarch are deacons holding candles. The elevated Cross is surrounded and venerated by many clergy and lay people, including Saint Helen, the mother of Emperor Constantine. In the background of the icon is a domed structure that represents the Church of the Resurrection in Jerusalem. This church was one of the churches constructed and dedicated by Emperor Constantine on the holy sites of Jerusalem. Another icon related to this feast depicts the actual service of veneration that is conducted in the churches on the Third Sunday of Lent. In the center of the icon is the Cross (1). It is on a table surrounded by flowers (2). Above the Cross is the image of Christ in a partial mandorla representing His glory (3). He is blessing those who have gathered to venerate the Cross, the rulers, clergy, monastics, and laity. The priest stands amongst the people At the foot of the cross are flowers. holding the Cross. As in the service of veneration, the icon shows the priest venerating the Cross as the people chant the hymn We venerate Your Cross, O Christ, and Your holy Resurrection we glorify, which is inscribed on the table holding he Cross. The Sunday of the Holy Cross is commemorated with the Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great, which is preceded by the Matins service. A Great Vespers is conducted on Saturday evening. The hymns of the Triodion for this day are added to the usual prayers and hymns of the weekly commemoration of the Resurrection of Christ. Scripture readings for the Sunday of Orthodoxy are: At the Orthros (Matins): The prescribed weekly Gospel reading. At the Divine Liturgy: Hebrews 4:14-5:6; Mark 8:34-9:1. At the conclusion of the Matins (the traditional practice in association with a vigil) or of the Divine Liturgy, a special service is held. The Cross is placed on a tray surrounded by basil or daffodils and is taken in solemn procession through the church to the chanting of the Thrice Holy Hymn. The tray is placed on a table before the people, and the hymn of the Feast of the Cross is chanted. As the priest venerates the Cross, the priest then the people chant, We venerate Your Cross, O Christ, and Your holy Resurrection we glorify. At the conclusion of the service, the people come and venerate the cross and receive the flowers or basil from the priest. 2
3 Epistle St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 4:14-16; 5:1-6 Prokeimenon. Mode Plagal 2. Psalm 27.9,1 O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance. Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God. The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 4:14-16; 5:1-6 BRETHREN, since we have a high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is bound to offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not take the honor upon himself, but he is called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, "Thou art my Son, today I have begotten thee"; as he says also in another place, "Thou art a priest for ever, after the order of Melchizedek." Gospel Sunday of the Holy Cross The Gospel According to Mark 8:34-38; 9:1 The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power." 3

Save, O save, O Lord your people, and bless your inheritance, granting victory to their rulers, over the enemy; and guarding your commonwealth by the might of you cross. You vanguished death by your cross; you opened to the thief the gates of Paradise; you reversed the lament of the Myrrh-beareres; and your Apostles, to preach you commended them; because you rose, O Christ our God, thus granting your great mercy to all the world. To-day is the crown of our Salvation and the manifestation of the Eternal Mystery. The Son of God becometh the son of the Virgin, and Gabriel announceth the good tidings of grace. Wherefore let us also with him cry to the Mother of God: Hail! Thou that art full of grace; the Lord is with thee. Your city sings to you a song of victory, and offers thanks to its defender and deliverer, for having spear it from trials, O Theotokos. But because you have the power invincible, from a multitude of dangers liberate us; that we may cry to you: Hail bride who knew no bridegroom. 5

A primary goal of Stewardship is to promote spiritual growth and strengthen faith. Becoming a Steward begins when we believe in God, to whom we give our love, loyalty and trust and act on those beliefs. As Stewards, we affirm that every aspect of our lives comes as a gift from Him. Stewardship calls on the faithful to cheerfully offer back to God a portion of the gifts with which they have been blessed. You can pay your stewardship contributions with a credit card payment. 7 RESPONSIBLE STEWARDSHIP WHATEVER YOU DO, WORK AT IT WITH ALL YOUR HEART AS WORKING FOR THE LORD, NOT MEN. (COLOSSIANS 3:23) STEWARDS IN ACTION! The most sacred part of the Divine Liturgy is called The Holy Anaphora. The name, Anaphora is given because it refers to the prepared Gifts offered by the celebrant for consecration. During the Anaphora the Holy Spirit is invoked to change the elements of bread and wine into the precious and holy Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. In addition to the invocation of the Holy Spirit, the Anaphora includes the Consecration of the Holy Gifts, the thanksgiving prayers, the Lord s Prayer, and the distribution of the Holy Eucharist to the faithful. During the Divine Liturgy there is active interaction that is offered between the Priest and the congregation. The words offered by the Priest are completed by the faithful who offer their response. While the chanters/choir has accepted the sacred responsibility to offer the appropriate responses, the entire congregation is encouraged to sing along with them. Our Christian Stewardship finds its meaning during the Holy Anaphora. Christian Orthodox Stewardship is the means by which we receive and glorify our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ. We receive Him in the Gift that He offers us, the Holy Eucharist and we glorify Him through the gift that He gives us, our Life! In Christian Orthodox Stewardship we offer daily thanks to the Lord for all that He gives us: our health, families, jobs, education, etc. We can thank our Lord when we attentively and actively participate in the Stewardship of the Church. We should always be developing our understanding so as to become better stewards of our Time, Talents and Treasures. What is needed for us to understand the sacred word that Christian Orthodox Stewardship expects? The answer is found in one of the verses offered by the Priest for the People of God who attend the Divine Liturgy. The Priest exclaims: Let us lift up our hearts! And the People respond: We lift them up to the Lord! 7
8 Lifting our hearts to the Lord requires more than just believing: it requires conviction! We must consider that a Christian may not have let Christ truly reign in his heart. To have life in Christ involves growth. Various persons are at various stages in their life. People are different, with different experiences and different experiences and different spiritual struggles. But the same Spirit is given to all. The same Lords is Lord of all. Christian love does not permit comparisons, self-righteousness, and elitism. What is important is to hold on to the Orthodox Christian Faith, to share fully in the life of the Church, and to continue to grow in the new life granted to us by God, each according one s gifts and capacities. Christian Orthodox Stewardship is all about spiritual renewal in Christ. He must be the Center of the Church and the believer. As we prayer the Liturgy, we must commit ourselves and each other and our whole life to Christ our God, entrusting ourselves to Him and placing our lives in His hands. It is within one s heart, at the core of our being, where thoughts and feelings are born, where motivations and decisions have their root, we must trust Christ. In this trust, we must let Him rule so that all we think, say, and do is according to His Love, not according to our self-will. When we ask Him to come into our hearts, a personal relationship develops between Christ and the believer, as real as that between two good friends or a husband and wife. Stewardship is the deeper experience and knowledge of Christ Himself. As the Fathers of the Church teach: For the believer Christ is all So for the Steward, Christ is all! God bestows each moment of our lives with so many good things. He is the One blessing us with everything we enjoy in this life and they have been given by Him so that we might fulfill our obligations of praise and glory to Him with all out heart. In whatever work we do, we are called to give glory to God for the abilities and opportunities he provides. Wee do this by caring for the work we do, applying our God-given abilities to our work, and by respecting the responsibilities with which we have been entrusted. We do our best and give the glory to God. LETS MAKE 2018 THE YEAR WE MEET ALL OF OUR STEWARDSHIP GOALS 8

11 It is the practice of our Church to give the name of a Saint to the new born child. By assuming the name of a Saint, we not only honor and express our gratitude to a Holy Person for his exceptional contribution to the Orthodox Faith, but provide the new Christian with an example worthy of emulation. The Saint then becomes the Patron of the child protecting it from all danger. Through his prayers, God will grant the child the necessary illumination to become a zealous member of the Church and an ardent follower of Christ. If by chance we accidentally miss someone's nameday, we ask that you please contact the Church Office so that we may correct our records. 14 THE SECOND SUNDAY OF GREAT LENT ST. GEREGORY PALAMAS MEDITATION FOR THE WEEK In this time of fasting and prayer, brethren, let us with all our hearts forgive anything real or imaginary we have with anyone. May we all devote ourselves to love, and let us consider one another as an incentive to love and good works, speaking in defense of one another, having good thoughts and dispositions within us before God and men. In this way our fasting will be laudable and blameless, and our requests to God while we fast will be readily received. St. Gregory Palamas, excerpt from Homily seven: On Fasting On this Second Sunday of Great Lent, the Orthodox Church commemorates St. Gregory Palamas, Archbishop of Thessaloniki in the 14th century. He is considered one of the greatest Fathers of the Orthodox Church and was a staunch defender of the faith and a man of prayer who was given a special grace to be able to describe his mystical experience in a way that others could understand. St. Gregory said that we as human beings could know God, not only through the intellect alone, but also and more importantly through our hearts, and thus could experience God, as He reveals Himself to us. St. Gregory was talking about some abstract theological concept, but about the reality of God s grace which he had experienced himself. This is why our Church gives us the tools of prayer, fasting, charity and repentance especially prayer, because we can experience God through prayer. We are encouraged to pray without ceasing. And St. Gregory tells us, Do you see, my brethren, that it is the duty of all Christians, small and great, always to practice the mental prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me! So that their mind and heart my acquire the habit of always uttering those holy words. Now as we begin the third week of Great Lent, may we see that we are going to have to work a little harder to overcome our laziness and selfishness. I urge you to not be discouraged, but to renew your dedication of prayer because through prayer and fasting, repentance and forgiveness we can indeed know God and love Him. 14

All are invited to join in prayer as we continue our journey of Great and Holy Lent. For You are blessed unto the ages of ages. Amen.
