Dimon Proistamenos 2187 West 14th Street, Cleveland, OH March 19, 2017 Sunday of the Holy Cross Come, all faithful, let us venerate the holy resurrection of Christ. For behold, through the cross joy has come to all the world. Blessing the Lord always, let us praise His resurrection. For enduring the cross for us, He destroyed death by death. On Sunday, halfway through Great Lent, the Precious and Life-giving Cross of Christ is brought to the center of our churches for special veneration, reminding us that the Cross is at the center of our faith and our lives. This day our Church tells us that...since the Holy Cross is also called the tree of life, and this tree has been planted in the center of Paradise, in the same way the Holy fathers have planted the tree of the Cross in the center of the Great Lent so we can eat from it and live forever. In the Gospel, our Lord says, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow me. Of course, this cross is different for each person, but we must carry it as best we can. Taking up is a voluntary action so we must willingly take up our crosses, whatever they might be, patiently and without complaint, in order to be His disciples: Whoever does not take up his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. (Luke 14:27) The Cross shows us God s mercy and great love for us, so if we focus our minds and hearts on the Precious, Life-giving Cross, we will be encouraged and strengthened for the journey ahead. As we venerate the Cross and worship Christ, let us renew our resolve to take up our own cross, and follow Him. Seeing the Precious Cross of Christ place this day before us, let us venerate it and rejoice in faith; with love let us greet the Lord who by His own free choice was crucified upon it, asking Him to grant us all uncondemned to adore His holy Passion and to attain the Resurrection. The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 4:14-16; 5:1-6 BRETHREN, since we have a high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is bound to offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not take the honor upon himself, but he is called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, "Thou art my Son, today I have begotten thee"; as he says also in another place, "Thou art a priest for ever, after the order of Melchizedek." Epistle Apolytikion Plagal Second Tone A host of Angels descended upon your tomb, and those guarding it fell down mortified; and in the tomb stood Mary, bewildered and searching for your undefiled Body. You bounded up Hades, never been hurt by him; you met with the Virgin, and granted life to her. O Lord who rose from the dead, glory to you. Gospel 3rd Monday Of Lent The Gospel According To Mark 8:34-38; 9:1 The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power." Apolytikion of the Church To-day is the crown of our Salvation and the manifestation of the Eternal Mystery. The Son of God becometh the son of the Virgin, and Gabriel announceth the good tidings of grace. Wherefore let us also with him cry to the Mother of God: Hail! Thou that art full of grace; the Lord is with thee. Kontakion Your city sings to you a song of victory, and offers thanks to ite defender and deliverer, for having spear it from trials, O Theotokos. But because you have the power invincible, from a multitude of dangers liberate us; that we may cry to you: Hail bride who knew no bridegroom. 2

Καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι εἰσί τινες τῶν ὧδε ἑστηκότων, οἵτινες οὐ μὴ γεύσωνται θανάτου ἕως ἂν ἴδωσι τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐληλυθυῖαν ἐν δυνάμει. Ἀλλ' ὡς ἔχουσα τό κράτος ἀπροσμάχητον, ἐκ παντοίων με κινδύνων ἐλευθέρωσον, ἵνα κράζω Σοί Χαῖρε Νύμφη ἀνύμφευτε. 3

4 Today, Students remain in church following Holy Communion. Following the Divine Liturgy, the Festival Committee invites everyone to join us for a free will brunch in our church banquet hall. All proceeds will go towards the operating expenses for the 2017 festival. If you have had even a little choral experience, we d love to have you with us. And, if you simply love to sing the beautiful hymns of our church, then you are already one of us! If you are thinking of joining the choir, then this is the best time to do so in time to sing the beautiful hymns of Lent, Holy Week and Pascha. To a new singer though, the thought of singing with us may seem like a daunting task, particularly if you are unable to read music. Learning to sing with others is a skill that makes the experience all the more rewarding. While the ability to read music is helpful, it is not required we will teach you everything you need to know. And you will learn more about your faith through the hymns that we chant. Some Things to Remember: Choir contributes to the understanding of God and the experience of our faith Choir gives us the opportunity to be worship leaders Choir fulfills the Biblical admonishment to sing to our God. Choir focuses on DOING rather than OBSERVING Choir allows praise with body, mind, spirit, and voice Choir is a gift that will last a lifetime. * Following the Divine Liturgy in our church Father Dean will be teaching our young children the Engomia for Holy Friday. * 4

The gracious women of wisdom as we call them, will be glad to show the younger generation how to prepare these foods. Men and women are welcomed.
