PHILOPTOCHOS MILITARY PROJECT Viki Moustoukas, Carol Venturatos, Christina Pappas, Gail Psilos, Donna Venturatos, and Cornelia Koniditsiotis coordinated a program to support our community's six active duty servicemen and collected donations for the Wounded Warrior Project. This charity is a resiliency program, which supports the dedicated personnel who care for wounded service members and their families in the initial days and weeks following an injury. Sunday School students prepared note cards with short sentiments for the active duty military in our community. These will be sent along with a small wooden cross and prayer card. Children of active duty servicemen will receive a religious book. Last Sunday, January 18, Elias Koniditsiotis spoke to 7-12 grade Sunday School students regarding faith in the lives of the military. Today, Sunday, January 25, a basket will be placed in the Coffee Room to collect donations for the Wounded Warrior Project, and note cards will be available for anyone who wishes to write a service person. Thank you in advance for your generosity. POINSETTIAS Although the holidays are well behind us, a few poinsettias remain in the Coffee Room. They are remarkably still in good shape. St. Gregory the Theologian, a great father and teacher of the Church, was born in 329 in a district of Cappadocia. He studied in Palestine, Alexandria, and finally in Athens, where he was joined by Saint Basil the Great, whom he already knew and whose acquaintanceship grew into a lifelong brotherly love. His parents and two siblings were also saints. St. Gregory was ordained a presbyter of the Church of Nazianzus and later was consecrated Bishop of Sasima (or Zansima). About 379, he freed the Church from the corruption of heresy and was elected Archbishop of Constantinople by the Second Ecumenical Council, which assembled there in 381. When Saint Gregory came to Constantinople, he began to preach his famous five sermons on the Trinity, called the Triadica. Saint Meletius of Antioch, who was presiding over the Second Ecumenical Council, died in the course of it, and Saint Gregory was chosen in his stead; there he distinguished himself in his expositions of dogmatic theology. Having governed the Church until 382, he delivered his farewell speech, the Syntacterion, in which he demonstrated the Divinity of the Son before 150 bishops and the Emperor Theodosius the Great. He reposed in the Lord in 391, having lived some sixty-two years. His extant writings, both prose and poems in every type of meter, demonstrate his lofty eloquence and his wondrous breadth of learning. In the beauty of his writings, he is considered to have surpassed the Greek writers of antiquity, and because of his God - inspired theological thought, he received the surname "Theologian." He is especially called "Trinitarian Theologian" since in virtually every homily he refers to the Trinity and the one essence and nature of the Godhead. Message from Father George Saint John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival The Saint John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival, introduced by the Archdiocese in 1983, provides our Greek Orthodox teenagers the opportunity to write and talk about their faith. The Oratorical Festival Program begins at the parish level and is divided into three divisions: Elementary Division (local festival only) for students in grades 4 6; Junior Division for students in grades 7 9; and Senior Division for student in grades 10 12. The top speakers in the Junior and Senior Divisions advance to the district level. Two finalists in each district division represent the district at the Metropolis Oratorical Festival. The top speaker in each metropolis division is then selected to participate in the Archdiocese Finals, which is hosted by a different metropolis each year. I have had the pleasure of working with a number of students, who have gone on to the metropolis and even national level. The preparation and presentation of the orations offer our students a valuable experience that will help them in their high school, college, and life experiences. Of course, it is a lot of work for the students as they are busy with their school academics and other activities; but, I know that if our students have the opportunity to research the various topics and prepare an oration in their own words, it will help to make the Orthodox Faith their Faith. Sunday School, or Church School, is an important and necessary component of our children s lives. But, as adults know, it merely exposes the tip of the iceberg of the understanding of the practice of our Orthodox Faith. Parents, ask your child what topics were discussed in Sunday School and continue the conversation on your drive home and perhaps also at the table as you meet for family meals, and please encourage your students to participate in the Oratorical Festival next year! ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM ORATORICAL FESTIVAL RECEPTION The Holy Trinity PTA is hosting a reception in the Coffee Room today, January 25, after Divine Liturgy to honor the participants in the local St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival held yesterday in the Cathedral. Congratulations to the Junior and Senior winners, who will advance to the District level competition.

Apolytikion of the Hierarch Tone 1 The shepherd's pipe of thy theology conquered the trumpets of the philosophers; for since thou didst search out the depths of the Spirit, beauty of speech was added to thee. But intercede with Christ God, O Father Gregory, that our souls be saved. Apolytikion of the Holy Trinity Plagal Tone 4 Blessed are You, O Christ our God, who made fishermen all-wise, sending upon them the Holy Spirit and, through them, netting the world. O Loving One, glory to You. Kontakion Tone 1 Your birth sanctified a Virgin's womb and properly blessed the hands of Symeon. Having now come and saved us O Christ our God, give peace to Your commonwealth in troubled times and strengthen those in authority, whom You love, as only the loving One.

Κεφάλαιον δὲ ἐπὶ τοῖς λεγομένοις τοιοῦτον ἔχομεν ἀρχιερέα, ὃς ἐκάθισεν ἐν δεξιᾷ τοῦ θρόνου τῆς μεγαλωσύνης ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς, τῶν ἁγίων λειτουργός, καὶ τῆς σκηνῆς τῆς ἀληθινῆς, ἣν ἔπηξεν ὁ κύριος, καὶ οὐκ ἄνθρωπος THE EPISTLE Hebrews 7:26-28; 8:1-2 My mouth shall speak wisdom and the meditation of my heart shall bring forth understanding. Hear this all you nations. Brethren, it was fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, blameless, unstained, separated from sinners, exalted above the heavens. He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people; he did this once for all when he offered up himself. Indeed, the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect for ever. Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, a minister in the sanctuary and the true tent which is set up not by man but by the Lord. THE GOSPEL Luke 19:1-10 At that time, Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. And there was a man named Zacchaios; he was a chief collector, and rich. And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not, on account of the crowd, because he was small of stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaios, make haste and come down; for I must stay at your house today." So he made haste and came down, and received him joyfully. And when they saw it they all murmured, "He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner." And Zacchaios stood and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded any one of anything, I restore it fourfold." And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of man came to seek and to save the lost."
