Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church Sunday, September 9, 2018 Sunday before Holy Cross A Thought by St. Silouan the Athonite If you upbraided, or passed judgment on, or vexed your brother, your peace is lost. If you have been boastful, or have exalted yourself about your fellow, you have lost grace. If you did not drive away forthwith that wanton thought that came to you, your soul will lose love for God and boldness in prayer. If you are fond of power, or money, you will never know the love of God. If you have followed your own will, then you are vanquished by the enemy and despondency will come upon your soul. If you detest your brother, it means that you have fallen away from God, and an evil spirit has taken possession of you. But if you will do good onto your brother, you will gain quiet for your conscience. If you subdue your own will, your enemies will be driven off and you will receive peace in your soul. If you forgive your brother the affronts he puts upon you, and love your enemies, then you will receive forgiveness for your sins, and the Lord will give you to know the love of the Holy Spirit. And when you have entirely humbled yourself, you will find perfect rest in God. Prayer by St. John Chrysostom Let us not then make our prayer by the gesture of our body, nor by the loudness of our voice, but by the earnestness of our mind: neither with noise and clamor and for display, so as even to disturb those that are near us, but with modesty, and with contrition in the mind, and with inward tears. From beneath, out of the heart, draw forth a voice, make your prayer a mystery...for you are joined to the choirs of angels, and are in communion with archangels, and you are singing with the seraphim.with these then mingle yourself, when you are praying and emulate their mystical order. For you are not praying to men, but to God, who is everywhere present, who hears even before the voice, who knows the secrets of the mind. If you so pray, great is the reward you will receive. Ὅσοι θέλουσιν εὐπροσωπῆσαι ἐν σαρκί, οὗτοι ἀναγκάζουσιν ὑμᾶς περιτέμνεσθαι, μόνον ἵνα μὴ τῷ σταυρῷ τοῦ Χριστοῦ διώκωνται. Οὐδὲ γὰρ οἱ περιτετμημένοι αὐτοὶ νόμον φυλάσσουσιν, ἀλλὰ θέλουσιν ὑμᾶς περιτέμνεσθαι, ἵνα ἐν τῇ ὑμετέρᾳ σαρκὶ καυχήσωνται. Ἐμοὶ δὲ μὴ γένοιτο καυχᾶσθαι εἰ μὴ ἐν τῷ σταυρῷ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ διʼ οὗ ἐμοὶ κόσμος ἐσταύρωται, κἀγὼ τῷ κόσμῳ. Ἐν γὰρ Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ οὔτε περιτομή τι ἰσχύει, οὔτε ἀκροβυστία, ἀλλὰ καινὴ κτίσις. Καὶ ὅσοι τῷ κανόνι τούτῳ στοιχήσουσιν, εἰρήνη ἐπʼ αὐτούς, καὶ ἔλεος, καὶ ἐπὶ τὸν Ἰσραὴλ τοῦ θεοῦ. Τοῦ λοιποῦ, κόπους μοι μηδεὶς παρεχέτω ἐγὼ γὰρ τὰ στίγματα τοῦ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ ἐν τῷ σώματί μου βαστάζω. Ἡ χάρις τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ μετὰ τοῦ πνεύματος ὑμῶν, ἀδελφοί. Ἀμήν. Brethren, see with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that would compel you to be circumcised, and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. For even those who receive circumcision do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may glory in your flesh. But far be it from me to glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. Peace and mercy be upon all who walk by this rule, upon the Israel of God. Henceforth let no man trouble me; for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brethren. Amen. Οὕτω γὰρ ἠγάπησεν ὁ Θεὸς τὸν κόσμον, ὥστε τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ τὸν μονογενῆ ἔδωκεν, ἵνα πᾶς ὁ πιστεύων εἰς αὐτὸν μὴ ἀπόληται ἀλλ' ἔχῃ ζωὴν αἰώνιον. οὐ γὰρ ἀπέστειλεν ὁ Θεὸς τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ εἰς τὸν κόσμον ἵνα κρίνῃ τὸν κόσμον, ἀλλ' ἵνα σωθῇ ὁ κόσμος δι' αὐτοῦ. The Lord said, "No one has ascended into heaven but he who descended from heaven, the Son of man who is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him."
Ο Σταυρός του Χριστού είναι το πιο γλυκό φορτίο που βάσταξα. Είναι ένα βάρος, σαν τα φτερά στο πουλί η τα πανιά στο πλοίο, που με φέρνει όλο και πιο κοντά στο λιμάνι του προορισμού μου. ********************************** Τα όπλα του αγώνα μας Τα όπλα με τα οποία μας όπλισε ο Χριστός είναι λαμπρότερα από κάθε χρυσάφι, ισχυρότερα από κάθε διαμάντι, θερμότερα από κάθε φωτιά, ελαφρότερα από τον αέρα Νέα είναι η ουσία τους, επειδή νέο είναι και το είδος της μάχης αυτής. Ε- νώ είμαι άνθρωπος, υποχρεούμαι να αγωνίζομαι εναντίον των δαιμόνων. Ενώ φέρνω σώμα παλεύω με ασώματες δυνάμεις. Γι αυτό τον θώρακα μου τον κατασκεύασε ο Θεός όχι από σίδερο, αλλά από δικαιοσύνη. Την περικεφαλαία δεν μου την έκανε από χαλκό, αλλά από πίστι. Έχω και μαχαίρι ακονισμένο, το λόγο του Πνεύματος Άραγε όμως μόνο όπλα κατασκεύασε ο Θεός; Όχι. Αλλά και Τράπεζα ετοίμασε, ισχυρότερη από κάθε όπλο, για να μην εξαντλείσαι στον πόλεμο, για να νικήσεις τον πονηρό Γιατί και μόνο να σε δει να γυρίζεις από δεσποτικά δείπνα, φεύγει γρηγορότερα από τον αέρα, όπως εκείνος που είδε λιοντάρι να βγάζει φωτιά από το στόμα του. Κι αν δείξεις σ αυτόν τη γλώσσα σου βαμμένη απ το τίμιο Αίμα, δεν θα μπορέσει να σταθεί. Κι αν του δείξεις το στόμα σου κοκκινισμένο, σαν αδύνατο θηρίο θα υποχωρήσει - Αγ. Ιωάννου του Χρυσοστόμου The Power of the Cross "Unspeakable is the power of the Cross. For that being actually in the midst of horrors, He should have shown Himself above all horrors; and being in the enemy's hold should have overcome; this comes of Infinite Power. For as in the case of the Three Children, their not entering the furnace would not have been so astonishing, as that having entered in they trampled upon the fire and in the case of Jonah, it was a greater thing by far, after he had been swallowed by the fish, to suffer no harm from the monster, than if he had not been swallowed at all so also in regard of Christ; His not dying would not have been so inconceivable, as that having died He should loose the bands of death. Say not then, why did He not help Himself on the Cross? for He was hastening on to close conflict with death himself. (See Hooker, E. P. v. 48. 9.) He descended not from the Cross, not because He could not, but because He would not. For Him Whom the tyranny of death restrained not, how could the nails of the Cross restrain?" -St. John Chrysostom, Commentary on the Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians **************************************** One of the reasons we light candles in church according to Saint Nikolai Velimirovich: In order to remind us that before anything else the Creator of the world created light, and after that everything else in order: And God said let there be light: and there was light (Genesis 1:3). And it must be so also at the beginning of our spiritual life, so that before anything else the light of Christ s truth would shine within us. From this light of Christ s truth subsequently every good is created, springs up and grows in us.
Οι εορτές των Αγίων Πολλά ωφελείται κανείς από τις μνήμες των μαρτύρων. Ωφελείται τα μέγιστα στον αγώνα του για την κατάκτηση της αρετής. Για την περιφρόνηση των παρόντων πραγμάτων. Ακόμη και αν είσαι ο πιο αναίσθητος άνθρωπος, ο πιο νωθρός σε θέματα πνευματικά και ο πιο αδιάφορος, δεν μπορεί η θυσία των μαρτύρων να με σου εμπνεύσει άλλο, υψηλότερο φρόνημα. Δεν μπορεί η μνήμη των μαρτύρων να μη σε κάνει να περιφρονήσεις τις απολαύσεις, τα χρήματα, τις ηδονές, και να μην ανάψει μέσα σου την επιθυμία για την άλλη ζωή, εκεί όπου αγάλλονται τα πνεύματά τους. Ακόμη και αν τύχει να είσαι άρρωστος, η θύμηση των μαρτυρικών παθημάτων θα σου γίνει αφορμή για να κάνεις υπομονή. Αν είσαι πάλι γερός, αλλά σε πιέζει η φτώχεια, η ανέχεια, έχεις οικονομικά προβλήματα η έστω σε ταλαιπωρεί κάποια δυσκολία, πόσο αλήθεια θα παρηγορηθής, θα ανακουφισθής από τα δεινά σου σαν φέρεις στο νου σου το τι φοβερά, ανυπόφορα βασανιστήρια υπέφεραν εκείνοι οι μάρτυρες της πίστεώς μας! Να γιατί αγαπώ τις μνήμες των μαρτύρων! Δεν ξέρετε πόσο τις αγαπώ και τις ευλαβούμαι. Όλες τις μνήμες! Όλους τους Αγίους! Ανεξαιρέτως! Ιδιαίτερα όμως τις μνήμες των μαρτύρων γυναικών! Γιατί εδώ, στην περίπτωση των μαρτύρων γυναικών, βλέπουμε να α- γωνίζονται τα ασθενέστερα σκεύη, το αδύνατο φύλο, να αγωνίζεται και να νικά. Εδώ η χάρη είναι μεγαλύτερη, το τρόπαιο λαμπρότερο, η νίκη πιο περιφανής. Να γιατί αγαπώ πιο πολύ τις γιορτές των αγίων γυναικών! -Αγ.
