THE SOURCE February 2014 Issue # 2-14 HOLY TRINITY GREEK ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL CAMP HILL, PA Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, A little about the heavenly bodiless powers, the Angels As I m writing this, I m still basking in the glow of Christmas and Epiphany, a time during which we hear a lot of references to the angels in the Scripture readings in Church. And, I recognize we will see a lot of cherubs (short for Cherubim, a category of angels) on cards, packaging for candy, and advertisements as we slide into the holiday of (saint) Valentine s day. Plus, I ve recently gotten some questions about angels, so it seemed like as good a time as any to write something about angels. Other than seminary courses, my main source is a 10 page article found at: http://orthodoxinfo.com/death/angels2.aspx There are numerous scriptural, iconographic, hymnographic references to angels as well as patristic writings on angels. One of the most famous patristic sources is the writings of St. Dionysius the Aeropagite, particularly his Mystical Theology and Celestial Hierarchies. This text is available free numerous places on the internet including: http://www.esoteric.msu.edu/volumeii/celestialhierarchy.html Angels are neither God nor human, they are a separate category. Angels were created by God before the rest of creation. They are immortal, bodiless, heavenly powers. Humans do NOT become angels despite what you may have seen in popular movies. Humans stay human after death. Our bodies decompose (except some saints) but our souls are immortal and the body will be resurrected and reunited with the soul at the second coming. Angels don t have bodies, though they sometimes appear to have them for our convenience. I suspect this is because it is hard enough to accept that God wants our attention badly enough to send you an angel with a message. Imagine if the voice seemed to come from empty space! Like humans, Angels seem to exist in definite places in time and space; God alone being everywhere present and filling all things. It may be true that angels move infinitely quickly (or close enough to it we couldn t tell the difference). Angels are described as having nine ranks or categories. According to St. Dionysius they are 1. Thrones, 2. Cherubim, 3. Seraphim, 4. Authorities, 5. Dominions, 6. Powers, 7. Principalities, 8. Archangels, 9. Angels. However, other authors contend that there are other categories or ranks of angels as yet undisclosed to us. Most saintly authors agree that the number of angels of all kinds is beyond human comprehension if not infinite.

THE SOURCE FEBRUARY 2014 Page 2 We know the names of a few angels: Michael (transl. Who is like God? ) is mentioned in the books of Daniel, Jude, and Revelation. Gabriel ( Man of God ) appears in the books of Daniel and Luke. Raphael ( Help of God ) and Uriel ( Fire of God ) appear in the book of Tobit (you will need an Orthodox Study bible to find Tobit---they are for sale at an excellent price at our parish bookstore). Three more names deemed reliable show up in various saintly writings outside of scripture: Salathiel (prayer of God), Jehudiel (Praise of God), and Barachiel (blessing of God). Then there s Lucifer or Satan or the Devil and his minions. They are fallen angels. Another of the distinctions between angels and men is in the realm of sin. We humans are allowed to commit sin and repent multiple times. Obviously, the fewer sins we commit the better! Angels were allowed that choice once, only, and it took place before the creation of the rest of creation. The devil, Lucifer (bearer of light) was, apparently, the most perfect and beautiful of the angels, the closest to God. He became so enamored of his own beauty that he fell into the sin of pride and arrogance believing he could surpass or take the place of God. Sadly, many angels followed him. To an extent the fallen angels have some power in the world. They have power over us if we abandon God s love and protection by falling into sin and especially if we fall for the lie that our sins can t be forgiven. God can and will forgive all the sins we commit if we humbly ask for forgiveness. Perhaps the reason the fallen angels work so hard for our destruction is that we humans with all our current imperfections due to sin, have been promised a place at the right hand of God which is similar to what the fallen angels presumed to try to grab for themselves. Some of the saints have seen demons and been tormented by them to try to get them to stop praying. If you read some of these stories (The Life of St. Anthony by St. Athanasius for example) you will see that the demons/devil can be overcome by the power of the name of Jesus. Numerous gospel stories also attest to Christ s complete power over the devil and his minions. What do angels do? Some angels primarily worship, praise God and sing of His Glory. See Isaiah chapter six. Others serve as messengers (the meaning of their name angel in Greek). Read the early part of the Gospel of Luke and see Gabriel giving messages. Others are appointed to protect us from sin and death, the Guardian Angels. Everyone gets one. Some have suggested that we can offend or drive away our guardian angel with our sins. I hope we don t do this. Others may have charge over nations or even certain aspects of creation! In Matthew s gospel chapter 4 verse 11 (Matt. 4:11) it is said that angels came and ministered to Him (Jesus). In this passage, I think that the angels are also setting an example of service to Christ for us to follow. How can we follow their example since we are so different from them? Part of the answer may be found later in the Gospel of Matthew 25:31-46 which describes the last judgement and which we read right before Lent starts (Sunday of Judgement, this year on February 23). We are told in this story that whatever we do for the least of the brethren, those in prison or sick or hungry, etc. we do for Jesus Christ. I hope this information about angels will clear up some confusions, give you hope and comfort, and inspire you to minister unto the least of the brethren. God bless! +Fr. Mark

THE SOURCE FEBRUARY 2014 Page 5 PARISH COUNCIL Dear Parishioners, We are grateful for His Eminence Metropolitan Savas's visit to our parish January 6th for Epiphany. Unfortunately not many of us were able to attend on a weekday but it was a happy occasion for those there. After liturgy there was a light luncheon served in the Philoptochos Room and Metropolitan Savas greeted everyone individually. I hope all of you are well despite the snow and cold temperatures. Sunday February 9 will be Godparents Sunday followed by a luncheon sponsored by the Philoptochos. Sunday February 16 in the evening will be the Valentine's Dance sponsored by the local chapter of the Evrytanian Association. Please plan to participate in both events. The commemorative book album is back on track after experiencing some delays. PLEASE bring to the church office your family pictures with a little historical write-up to be included in the book. We will conclude our 75th anniversary album project with a dinner dance on Pentecost, June 8, which we hope will become a yearly event celebrating our church's Name Day. Our AHEPA chapter has been revived in the past few months and is making plans to become a major scholarship donor for our community's youth. Under the leadership of Dimitri Zozos we hope to see changes that will benefit our community. I encourage the Neohoritons and Evrytanians to also contribute to the wellbeing of our Cathedral in new ways. I want to thank the Lloyds again for operating the Holy Trinity Bookstore. Please note their new weekday hours and plan to visit the store on Sunday, Tuesday or Wednesday. We want to show our appreciation to Jane Aftosmes for her many years of making sure we had a bookstore. We also want to recognize Daphne Kontanis for being one of the founders of the bookstore. I want to thank out-going council members John Doulgeris and Constantine Pappas for their time serving on the Parish Council. Please attend our church services. THE SOURCE FEBRUARY 2014 Page 18 HOLY TRINITY GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH 1000 Yverdon Drive Camp Hill, PA 17011 NON PROFIT ORG. U.S. POSTAGE PAID Harrisburg, PA Permit No. 112 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ADVERTISING IN THE SOURCE In an effort to contain printing costs for monthly newsletters, many churches have turned to paid advertisements in their publications. Parish Council has agreed to adopt this funding source for our monthly publication. Doing this would help lessen and possibly erase the expense of publishing the Source. We now have availability for two pages of paid ads in our monthly Source. The ad price will represent a year of advertising or 11 issues as we combine the June and July Source into one issue. Ads are sold by the block. There will be room for 24 ads or blocks per page. You may purchase more than one block for increased space and presentation. The cost of one ad block is $125 per year, and subsequent blocks would be an additional $100 per block. For example, a business card ad would equal two blocks and would cost $225. Camera ready ads are appreciated but not required. Please help us promote this program. If you own or work for a business that may be interested in advertising in our Source which is sent out to over 600 families, please contact Mary in the church office. If you know of a business that may be a potential advertiser, please pass on a contact and phone number. Examples of businesses that may be interested in advertising could be Greek bands, importers, baptismal supplies/clothing stores, and jewelers specializing in crosses. Other possibilities could be lawyers, accountants, real estate agents, etc. The only ads we cannot accept are ones pertaining to credit cards, travel, or insurance. Please contact the church office as soon as possible if interested in this program.
