Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church Sunday, March 3, 2019 Judgment Sunday - Meatfare SAINTS OF THE WEEK Alexandra of Alexandria, March 3rd Alexandra was from a wealthy home with a good father and an evil mother. Alexandra s mother had an easy life, and upon her death, she was buried with honor. On the other hand, her father suffered greatly and had a difficult death. There was so much rain on the day of his burial that it was difficult to bury him. Alexandra was uncertain whose example she should follow until she had a vision of both parents in their afterlife. She visited her father in the kingdom of God and witnessed her mother s darkness and torments in hell. Alexandra devoted the rest of her life to God, without regard to misfortune or opposition. Following God s commandments to the end of her life, she was made worthy of the kingdom and rejoiced with her father. The Holy Forty Martyrs of Sebaste - March 9 Symbolic crowns are placed on the heads of the bride and groom during the Orthodox wedding ceremony in remembrance of the Forty Martyrs. The priest reads, Remember them, O Lord our God, as You remembered Your holy Forty Martyrs, sending down upon them the crowns from the heavens. In the year 320, there was a garrison of forty brave Cappadocian soldiers in the Armenian city of Sebaste. They were all Christians. When they refused to offer sacrifice to the pagan gods, they were imprisoned. The military commander at the time was Agricolaus, a pagan. He tried flattery and praise, urging them to disavow Christ, but they would not. They were shackled and returned to prison. A commander ordered them stoned, but the stones turned back in midair on the throwers, one breaking the commander s teeth. In the bitter cold, the soldiers were forced into a frozen lake. Fires and warm baths were built to lure the soldiers into renouncing Christ. One of the soldiers could not hold out, and as soon as he left the lake, he fell dead. During the night as all the guards were asleep, except one by the name of Aglaios who was keeping watch, thirtynine radiant crowns descended from heaven and were placed on the heads of the soldiers. Aglaios removed his uniform and entering the lake, said, I too - am a Christian. The next morning, the guards were surprised to find everyone alive and Aglaios in the lake. They then broke their legs and committed them to fire. Their bones were thrown into the water so the Christians could not find them. Three days later, the martyrs appeared in a dream to Peter, bishop of Sebaste, telling him where to find their bodies for burial. 7560 South Archer Road, Justice, Illinois 60458 (708) 594-2040, fax (708) 594-8362 Web: www.holycrossil.org; Email: office@holycrossil.org Rev. ΑΠΟΣΤΟΛΟΣ ΤΗΣ ΗΜΕΡΑΣ EPISTLE READING FOR THE DAY ΕΥΑΓΓΕΛΙΟΝ ΤΗΣ ΗΜΕΡΑΣ GOSPEL READING FOR THE DAY Ἀδελφοί, βρῶμα ἡμᾶς οὐ παρίστησιν τῷ θεῷ οὔτε γὰρ ἐὰν φάγωμεν περισσεύομεν, οὔτε ἐὰν μὴ φάγωμεν ὑστερούμεθα. Brethren, food will not commend us to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. Only take care lest this liberty of yours somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. For if any one sees you, a man of knowledge, at table in an idol's temple, might he not be encouraged, if his conscience is weak, to eat food offered to idols? And so by your knowledge this weak man is destroyed, the brother for whom Christ died. Thus, sinning against your brethren and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food is a cause of my brother's falling, I will never eat meat, lest I cause my brother to fall. Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are not you my workmanship in the Lord? If to others I am not an apostle, at least I am to you; for you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. The Lord said, "When the Son of man comes in his glory and all the holy angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, and he will place the sheep at his right hand, but the goats at the left. Then the king will say to those at his right hand, 'Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?' And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.' Then he will say to those at his left hand, 'Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.' Then they also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?' Then he will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.' And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

We ask that you prayerfully consider what you will offer to our beloved parish of Holy Cross in 2019. Our beloved parish requires approximately $915 per day to operate or an annual pledge average of $1670 per family. As always, we remain appreciative for all that you lovingly give.

Judgment Sunday The foregoing two parables -- especially that of the Prodigal Son -- have presented to us God's extreme goodness and love for man. But lest certain persons, putting their confidence in this alone, live carelessly, squandering upon sin the time given them to work out their salvation, and death suddenly snatch them away, the most divine Fathers have appointed this day's feast commemorating Christ's impartial Second Coming, through which we bring to mind that God is not only the Friend of man, but also the most righteous Judge, Who recompenses to each according to his deeds. It is the aim of the holy Fathers, through bringing to mind that fearful day, to rouse us from the slumber of carelessness unto the work of virtue, and to move us to love and compassion for our brethren. Besides this, even as on the coming Sunday of Cheese-fare we commemorate Adam's exile from the Paradise of delight -- which exile is the beginning of life as we know it now -- it is clear that today's is reckoned the last of all feasts, because on the last day of judgment, truly, everything of this world will come to an end. All foods, except meat and meat products, are allowed during the week that follows this Sunday. *************************** St. Gregory the Great says There is nothing we can offer to God more precious than good will. But what is good will? To have good will is to experience concern for someone else s adversities as if they were our own, to give thanks for our neighbor s prosperity as for our own; to believe that another person s loss is our own, and also that another s gain is ours; to love a friend in God, and bear with an enemy out of love, to do to no one what we do not want to suffer ourselves, and to refuse to no one what we rightly want for ourselves; to choose to help a neighbor who is in need not only to the whole extent of our ability, but even beyond our means. What offering is richer, what offering is more substantial than this one? What we are offering to God on the altar of our hearts is the sacrifice of ourselves. Three Births We are born three times during the period of our lives: One time only from our mother, in which instance we come forth from the earthly and proceed into the earthly. In the other two births we move from the earthly to the heavenly. Of these two births, one is that of Grace, which is realized in Holy Baptism, and we rightly call this rebirth. And the other birth is occasioned by repentance and the labors of good and virtuous deeds, in which we are now being proved. - From the Life of St. Synkletike A Thought Rejoice at every opportunity of showing kindness to your neighbor as a true Christian who strives to store up as many good works as possible, especially the treasures of love. Do not rejoice when others show you kindness and love - consider yourself unworthy of it; but rejoice when an occasion presents itself for you to show love. Show love simply, without any deviation into cunning thoughts, without any trivial, worldly, covetous calculations, remembering that love is God Himself. Remember that He sees all your ways, sees all the thoughts and movements of your heart. Do not let pass any opportunity for praying for any man, either at his request or at the request of his relatives, friends, of those who esteem him, or his acquaintances. The Lord looks favorably upon the prayer of our love, and upon our boldness before Him. Besides this, prayers for others is very beneficial to the man himself who prays for others; it purifies the heart, strengthens faith and hope in God, and enkindles our love for God and our neighbor. When praying, say thus: Lord, it is possible for Thee to do this or that to this servant of Thine; do this for him, for Thy name is the Merciful Lover of Men and the Almighty. -St. John of Kronstadt
