Message from Father George LIVING OUR ORTHODOXY Our Greek Orthodox Faith is a way of life that leads to Salvation! During this season of Great Lent, our Holy Church reminds us that we must educate ourselves and strive to live this unique and blessed way of life that includes many spiritual disciplines, which, in turn, allow us to grow in our Faith and in this life. In recent years, a great wealth of very fine material has become available online through many of our sister Church websites. The list below comes from Saint George Cathedral in Greenville, South Carolina, and offers a quick guide to an Orthodox Way of Life. It is a starting point and links to further reading about the many topics intended for our personal spiritual growth. Great Lent is quickly coming to a close as we celebrate Palm Sunday next Sunday, April 5. I highly encourage that you review the Ten Points and incorporate these important tenants in your lives! TEN POINT PROGRAM FOR ORTHODOX LIFE 1. Praying Daily - Have a regular prayer rule that includes morning and evening prayer. 2. Worshiping and Participating in Sacraments - Attend and participate in the Divine Liturgy, receiving Holy Communion regularly, as well as regular participation in Confession. 3. Honoring the Liturgical Cycle of the Church - Follow the seasons of the Church and participate in the fasts and feasts of the Church. 4. Using the Jesus Prayer - Repeat the holy name whenever possible throughout the day or night. 5. Slowing Down and Ordering Your Life - Set priorities and reduce the stress and friction caused by a hurried life. 6. Being Watchful - Give full attention to what you are doing at the moment. 7. Taming the Passions - Overcome your habits, attachment to your likes and dislikes, and learn to practice the virtues. 8. Putting Others First - Free yourself from your selfishness and find joy in helping others. 9. Spiritual Fellowship - Spend time regularly with other Orthodox Christians for support and inspiration. 10. Reading the Scriptures and Holy Fathers - Be inspired by the lessons of the Holy Scriptures, the wisdom of the Holy Fathers, and the lives of the Saints of the Church. There is a free 32 page booklet available by download from Saint George Cathedral at their website: http://www.stgeorgegreenville.org/tenpointprogram/tenpointprogram.html or you may inquire at Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 406 North Academy Street, Greenville, South Carolina 29601

Resurrection Apolytikion Tone 1 The stone had been sealed by the Jews, and soldiers were guarding your pure Body; but on the third day, Saviour, you arose and gave life to the world. Wherefore the heavenly Powers cried out to you, Giver of life: Glory to your resurrection, Christ, glory to your kingdom, glory to your divine plan, you who alone love human kind. Apolytikion of St. Mary Plagal Tone 4 In you the image was preserved with exactness, O Mother; for taking up your cross, you followed Christ, and by your deeds you taught us to overlook the flesh, for it passes away, but to attend to the soul since it is immortal. Wherefore, O righteous Mary, your spirit rejoices with the Angels. Apolytikion of the Holy Trinity Plagal Tone 4 Blessed are You, O Christ our God, who made fishermen all-wise, sending upon them the Holy Spirit and, through them, netting the world. O Loving One, glory to You. Kontakion Tone 2 A protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, Intercessor to our Holy Maker, unwavering, reject not, the prayerful cries of those who are in sin. Instead, come to us, for you are good; Your loving help bring unto us, Who are crying in faith to you: Hasten to intercede and speed now to supplicate, as a protection for all time, Theotokos, for those who honor you.

THE EPISTLE St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 9:11 14 BRETHREN, when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the Holy Place, taking not the blood of goats and calves but his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. For if the sprinkling of defiled persons with the blood of goats and bulls and with the ashes of a heifer sanctifies for the purification of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? THE GOSPEL Mark 10:32 45 At that time, Jesus taking the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to happen to him, saying, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death, and deliver him to the Gentiles; and they will mock him, and spit upon him, and scourge him, and kill him; and after three days he will rise." And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him, and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." And he said to them, "What do you want me to do for you?" And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory." But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?" And they said to him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared." And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant of James and John. And Jesus called them to him and said to them, "You know that those who are supposed to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
