Του Τελώνου και του Φαρισαίου Εισερχόµαστε µε τη δύναµη του Πανάγαθου Θεού στο ευλογηµένο στάδιο του Τριωδίου, το οποίο αποτελεί ευκαιρία για να εγκολπωθούµε στη ζωή µας βασικές πνευµατικές αρετές και να αποκοµίσουµε πλούσια εν Χριστώ καρποφορία. Ειδικότερα, τη σηµαντική αυτή περίοδο του Τριωδίου ανοίγει η Εκκλησία µας µε λατρευτικές ευκαιρίες που εκτοξεύουν τον άνθρωπο σε αναβάσεις πνευµατικής ωφέλειας και καλλιέργειας. Άξονας βασικότατος γύρω από τον οποίο περιστρέφεται η πνευµατική ζωή είναι η µετάνοια του ανθρώπου, η οποία περνά µέσα από την αρετή της ταπεινοφροσύνης και την απόταξη της κακίας του εγωισµού. Η εµβέλεια της παραβολής Η σηµερινή πρώτη Κυριακή του Τριωδίου ονοµάζεται του Τελώνου και του Φαρισαίου από την οµώνυµη παραβολή. Θέλει ακριβώς να στείλει ξεκάθαρο το µήνυµα ότι η πνευµατική πορεία που διακλαδώνεται µέσα από τη µετάνοια περνά από το κανάλι της συναίσθησης της αµαρτωλότητάς µας. Ο Φαρισαίος της παραβολής ήταν, ο κατά τα άλλα, «θρησκευτικός» και «ενάρετος» άνθρωπος της εποχής του. Εφάρµοζε τις εντολές του Θεού, αλλά µόνο εξωτερικά, τυπικά και επιφανειακά. Η θρησκευτικότητά του ήταν µια αποθέωση της τυπολατρίας. Η προσευχή του δεν ήταν τίποτε άλλο παρά µια στείρα επίδειξη ικανοτήτων και κατορθωµάτων, για τα οποία και καµάρωνε τον εαυτό του. Και ακριβώς, αυτός ο εγκλωβισµός στον εαυτό του δεν του επέτρεπε να κοιτάξει καθαρά κανένα άλλο. Η υπερηφάνεια του τόν µετέβαλε σε µια εσωτερικά διχασµένη και δυστυχισµένη ύπαρξη. Δυστυχώς και ο κόσµος σήµερα αντανακλά εν πολλοίς την παθογένεια του Φαρισαίου, µε όλες τις παρενέργειες του που βιώνουµε µε τόσο οδυνηρό τρόπο. Έξοδος από αδιέξοδα Πώς µπορεί όµως ο άνθρωπος να αποφύγει τις πιο πάνω παγίδες; Ακριβώς, µε τη στάση του Τελώνη η Εκκλησία µάς βοηθά να εξέλθουµε από αυτό τον φαύλο κύκλο και τα φοβερά αδιέξοδα της ζωής. Ο Τελώνης συναισθανόταν την αµαρτωλότητά του. Για την κατάντια του όµως αυτή µεµφόταν µόνο τον εαυτό του. Παρά την αµαρτωλότητά του όµως αναγνώριζε την παρουσία του Θεού µέσα από τους άλλους ανθρώπους. Η σωτήρια ελπίδα που εµφιλοχωρούσε στην καρδιά του ήταν η συµπάθεια, το έλεος, η αγάπη και η συγχώρηση του Θεού. Γι αυτό, εκείνο που έβγαινε µέσα από το στόµα του δεν ήταν λόγος εγωιστικός, αλλά λόγος ταπείνωσης: «ο Θεός ιλάσθητί µοι τω αµαρτωλώ». Βλέπουµε ακριβώς µέσα από το πρόσωπο του Τελώνη ν αποκαλύπτεται ένα µεγάλο θαύµα που είχε συντελεσθεί στο βάθος της ψυχής του. Είχε εγκολπωθεί την υψοποιό αρετή της ταπεινοφροσύνης. «Στολή της θεότητος εστίν η ταπεινοφροσύνη», τονίζουν οι Πατέρες της Εκκλησίας µας. Η ταπείνωση είναι τελικά το θεµέλιο της µετάνοιας που προβάλλει σαν κύριο στοιχείο της πνευµατικής ζωής που ξανοίγεται µπροστά µας την περίοδο του Τριωδίου. Αγαπητοί αδελφοί, ο υπερήφανος Φαρισαίος, που η περίπτωσή του αποτυπώνεται µε διάφορες µορφές σε όλες τις εποχές, αναγκάζεται να προσγειωθεί οδυνηρά γιατί εξαρτά την ύπαρξή του µόνο από τις επιδοκιµασίες, τα χειροκροτήµατα και τις επευφηµίες των άλλων ανθρώπων. Η Εκκλησία πολύ σοφά µάς προτρέπει ν ακολουθήσουµε το παράδειγµα του Τελώνη: «Φαρισαίου φύγωµεν υψηγορίαν και τελώνου µάθωµεν το ταπεινόν εν στεναγµοίς, προς τον Σωτήρα κραυγάζοντες «ίλαθι µόνε ηµίν ευδιάλλακτε»

Dearest Friends and Holy Cross Family, Ralph Waldo Emerson once said To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded. It is with overwhelming joy that we write to convey, we ve done exactly that - Together, we have succeeded! The residents of St. Mary s Children s Hospital will breathe easier this holiday season because of the generosity of hundreds of friends and families, various non-profit organizations, church community leaders and businesses. On December 14th volunteers of all ages gathered at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church in Whitestone, NY to sort the hundreds of donations that were collected. The spirit of Christmas was truly in the air that evening and the message of St. Nicholas (of giving and helping the poor and sick) couldn t have been more evident through the tremendous response in this effort. On December 15th at 3:00pm, we arrived at St. Mary s with a van full of items from their wish list. We successfully collected well over $10,000.00 in monetary donations and items from their wish list! Hello, Happy New Year! Here is an update on our Girl Scout latest activities: For our on going Shoe Drive our Girl Scouts have already packaged 9 boxes of shoes weighing at a total of 500.47 pounds! That's amazing! If the shoe doesn t fit donate it!! Our goal is to reach 1,000 pounds by May. Taking over the Used Eyeglasses Collection project that was initiated by Holy Cross, the Girl Scouts packaged 30 eyeglass cases, 105 women s frames, 8 children s (girls) frames, 19 men s frames, and 12 broken/ missing parts frames. They were shipped to Lions Eyeglass Recy- cling Center, Inc., in West Trenton, NJ where they will be re-distributed to the poor.
