Κύριοι Ποιμαντορικοί Σταθμοί καί Ἐκκλησιαστικές Πρωτοβουλίες τοῦ μακαριστοῦ Ἀρχιεπισκόπου Αὐστραλίας κυροῦ Στυλιανοῦ Ὁ μακαριστός Ἀρχιεπίσκοπος Αὐστραλίας, ὑπέρτιµος καί Ἔξαρχος πάσης Ὠκεανίας, κυρός Στυλιανός (Χαρκιανάκης), γεννήθηκε στό Ρέθυμνο Κρήτης τό 1935. Σπούδασε στήν Ἱ. Θεολογική Σχολή τῆς Χάλκης, ἀποφοιτήσας τό 1958. Ὡς μετέπειτα Ἡγούμενος τῆς Μονῆς Βλατάδων καί Ὑφηγητής τῆς Συστηµατικῆς Θεολογίας στό Πανεπιστήμιο Θεσσαλονίκης, τό 1970 ἐξελέγη παµψηφεί Μητροπολίτης Μιλητουπόλεως καί Ἔξαρχος Ἁγίου Ὂρους. Στίς 3 Φεβρουαρίου 1975, ἡ Ἁγία καί Ἱερά Σύνοδος τοῦ Οἰκουµενικοῦ Πατριαρχείου τον ἐκλέγει παµψηφεί ὡς Ἀρχιεπίσκοπο Αὐστραλίας. Ὁ νέος Ποιµενάρχης ἔφθασε στό Σύδνεϋ στίς 15 Ἀπριλίου 1975 καί ἐνθρονίσθηκε ἐπισήµως τό Σάββατο τοῦ Λαζάρου, στίς 26 τοῦ ἰδίου µηνός καί ἔτους. Ὁ Ἀρχιεπίσκοπος Στυλιανός, ἐκτιµῶντας ἰδιαίτερα τό ἔργο τῶν προκατόχων του σχετικά µέ τήν ἀνέγερση Ἱερῶν Ναῶν, τήν ἵδρυση Εὐαγῶν Ἱδρυµάτων, τήν κοινωνική καί πολιτιστική πρόοδο τοῦ ποιµνίου του, τό συνεχίζει ἐντατικά. Παραλλήλως ἐργάζεται συστηµατικά γιά τήν καλλιέργεια καί προβολή τῶν πνευµατικῶν θησαυρῶν τῆς Ἑλληνορθοδόξου παραδόσεως. Τό 1976 τελεῖται µέ διετῆ καθυστέρηση, ὁ πανηγυρικός ἑορτασµός τῆς Πεντηκονταετηρίδος τῆς Ἱερᾶς Ἀρχιεπισκοπῆς, µέ πλουσιότατο πρόγραµµα, πού εἶχε εὐρύτατη ἀπήχηση ὄχι µόνο ἀνάµεσα στήν Ὁµογένεια, ἀλλά καί γενικά µέσα στόν Αὐστραλιανό χῶρο. Ὁ νέος Ἀρχιεπίσκοπος ἐνεθάρρυνε τήν ραγδαία ἐπέκταση τοῦ ἐκκλησιαστικοῦ συγκροτήματος Γηροκομείων καί Γηριατρείων «Ἡ Βασιλειάς» γιά τήν παροχή ὑπηρεσιῶν πρός τούς ἡλικιωμένους σέ ὅλες τίς Πολιτεῖες. Σταθµό γιά τά ἐκκλησιαστικά πράγµατα τῆς Αὐστραλίας, ἀπετέλεσε ἡ Δ Κληρικολαϊκή Συνέλευση, πού συγκλήθηκε τόν Ἰανουάριο τοῦ 1981 στό Σύδνεϋ. Τήν ἔναρξη τῶν ἐργασιῶν της κήρυξε ὁ Γενικός Κυβερνήτης τῆς χώρας, ἔλαβε δέ µέρος ἐπίσηµη Πατριαρχική Ἀντιπροσωπεία καί ἔκτακτος ἀπεσταλµένος τῆς Ἑλληνικῆς Κυβερνήσεως. Ἀνάλογης σηµασίας καί ἐπιτυχίας ἔτυχον καί αἱ ἑπόµεναι Κληρικολαϊκαί Συνελεύσεις, πού συγκλήθηκαν ἡ Ε στή Βρισβάνη τό 1985, ἡ Στ στή Μελβούρνη τόν Ἰανουάριο τοῦ 1989, ἡ Ζ στό Σύδνεϋ τόν Ἰανουάριο τοῦ 1993, ἡ Η στό Σύδνεϋ τόν Ἰανουάριο τοῦ 1998, καθώς καί ἡ Θ καί Ι ἐπίσης στό Σύδνεϋ τόν Ἰανουάριο τοῦ 2003 καί 2008 ἀντίστοιχα. Μέ καθυστέρηση ἑνός ἔτους τό 2013 συνεκλήθη καί πάλιν ἐν Σύδνεϋ ἡ ΙΑ Κληρικολαϊκή εἰς τήν νεόδµητον αἴθουσα πολλαπλῶν χρήσεων τοῦ Διγλώσσου Κολλεγίου τοῦ Ἁγίου Σπυρίδωνος. Εἰς τήν ἐν λόγῳ Κληρικολαϊκήν διά πρώτην φοράν ἡ Α.Θ. Παναγιότης ἀπηύθυνε ζωντανό µήνυµα πρός τούς συνέδρους µέσω Skype. 3

Κατά τή νέα αὐτή περίοδο, χειροτονήθηκαν πολλοί νέοι Ἱερεῖς, ἐνῶ κάθε χρόνο µετακαλοῦνται Ἐξοµολόγοι ἀπό τό Ἅγιον Ὄρος, οἱ ὁποῖοι περιέρχονται ὅλη τήν Ἤπειρο στηρίζοντας πνευµατικά τούς πιστούς καί δεχόµενοι τίς ἐξοµολογήσεις τους. Κατά καιρούς µετακαλοῦνται ἐπίσης ἄνθρωποι τοῦ πνεύµατος ἀπό τήν Ἑλλάδα, πού ἔρχονται ἀρωγοί στό ἔργο τῆς Ἐκκλησίας µέ διαλέξεις, ὁµιλίες κ.λ.π. καί διοργανώνεται προσκύνηµα ἐνηλίκων στή Γενέτειρα, τούς Ἁγίους Τόπους καί τό Οἰκουµενικό Πατριαρχεῖο. Ἡ ἵδρυση Ἑλληνικοῦ Κέντρου Προνοίας, Παιδικῶν Σταθµῶν καί Γηροκοµείων σέ κάθε Πολιτεία, καθώς ἐπίσης καί ἡ συγκρότηση τοῦ Μονίµου Συµβουλίου Κανονικῶν Ὀρθοδόξων Ἐκκλησιῶν Αὐστραλίας (SCCOCA), ἀποτέλεσαν µερικές ἀπό τίς πρῶτες φροντίδες τοῦ νέου Ἀρχιεπισκόπου. Ἡ κορύφωση ὅµως τῆς ἐκκλησιαστικῆς ἀναπτύξεως τῶν τελευταίων ἐτῶν, εἶναι ἡ ἵδρυση καί λειτουργία τῆς Θεολογικῆς Σχολῆς τοῦ Ἀποστόλου Ἀνδρέου, ἡ ὁποία καί εἶναι ἐπισήµως ἀναγνωρισµένη ὡς ἰσότιµη τῶν ἄλλων Πανεπιστηµιακῶν Σχολῶν τῆς Αὐστραλίας καί τῆς Ἑλλάδος. Πρωτοποριακή ἐνέργεια ἦταν ἡ ἵδρυση τό 1983 τοῦ συστήματος Ἡμερησίων Ἑλληνικῶν Ὀρθοδόξων Κολλεγίων στίς μεγαλύτερες Πολιτεῖες γιά τά παιδιά καί τή νεολαία. Ὁ Ὀγανισμός «Ἑστία», πρωτοβουλία τοῦ Ἀρχιεπισκόπου Στυλιανοῦ, ἱδρύθηκε τό 1994 ὡς ἱεραποστολή τῆς Ἐνορίας Ἁγίου Ἀνδρέου Gladesville γιά ἄτομα μέ ἀναπηρίες καί εἰδικές ἀνάγκες. Ἡ πρωτοβουλία αὐτή ἀναπτύχθηκε ἀργότερα στήν Ἐνορία Ἁγίου Ἰωάννου στὀ Cairns τῆς Κουηνσλάνδης μέ τήν ἵδρυση τοῦ St John s Community Care Ltd γιά ἡλικιωμένους καί νέους μέ ἀναπηρίες. Ἄξια πολλοῦ λόγου ὑπῆρξαν καί τά δέκα Παναυστραλιανά Συνέδρια Νεολαίας, πού πραγµατοποιήθηκαν ἀπό τό 1982, σέ Μελβούρνη, Σύδνεϋ, Ἀδελαΐδα καί Βρισβάνη καθώς καί τά ἀντίστοιχα σέ κάθε Πολιτεία Τοπικά. Λαµπρό σταθµό γιά τήν ζωή τῆς ἐν Αὐστραλίᾳ Ἐκκλησίας καί Ὁµογενείας ἀπετέλεσεν, ὡς ἦτο φυσικόν, ἡ ἱστορική Ἐπίσκεψις εἰς τούς Ἀντίποδες τῆς Α.Θ. Παναγιότητος τοῦ Οἰκουµενικοῦ Πατριάρχου κ.κ. Βαρθολοµαίου, κατά τόν Νοέµβριον τοῦ 1996. Μέ τούς ἐπετειακούς ἑορτασµούς διά τό 2000, ἡ Ἱερά Ἀρχιεπισκοπή, 4

στήν ὅλη πνευµατική ἀναπτυξιακή της προσπάθεια, προέβη σέ κάποια µείζονα βήµατα καί τήν ἵδρυση ἀναλόγων Θεσµῶν, Συµβουλίων καί Ἐπιτροπῶν. Πρωτίστως συγκροτήθηκε µέ ἐκπροσώπους ἀµφοτέρων τῶν φύλων, ἀπ ὅλες τίς Πολιτεῖες τῆς Αὐστραλίας, τό «Millennium Heritage Council». Ἀπ αὐτό ἐπήγασαν ὀργανικῶς: α) Ἡ 200µελής Μικτή Χορωδία τῆς Ἱερᾶς Ἀρχιεπισκοπῆς (The Millennium Choir), ἡ ὁποία µαζί µέ µαθητικές Χορωδίες τῶν ἐν Σύδνεϋ Κολλεγίων, ἐδόξασαν τήν Ὁµογένεια παγκοσµίως, διά τῆς λαµπρῆς συµµετοχῆς εἰς τούς µνηµειώδεις Ὀλυµπιακούς Ἀγῶνες τοῦ «Σύδνεϋ 2000». β) Ὁ πρωτοποριακός Ὀργανισµός «ProviCare» (ἀπό σύντµηση τοῦ Providence καί Care, τοῦ πρώτου νοουµένου ἐκ τοῦ θείου καί τοῦ δευτέρου ἐκ τοῦ ἀνθρωπίνου παράγοντος, ὥστε νά ἐκτιµᾶται Ὀρθοδόξως ἡ «θεανδρική» σέ ὅλα δράση τῆς Ἐκκλησίας). Μέληµα ἄκρως ἐπώδυνο καί ὑπεύθυνο τοῦ ἐν λόγῳ Ὀργανισµοῦ, εἶναι νά παρασχεθεῖ εἰς τά συνεχῶς αὐξανόµενα θύµατα τοῦ ἀλκοολισµοῦ καί τῶν ναρκωτικῶν, κάθε δυνατή βοήθεια. Στίς φιλοδοξίες τοῦ Ὀργανισµοῦ, εἶναι καί ἡ ἵδρυση στίς µεγαλύτερες πόλεις τῆς Αὐστραλίας, Κέντρων ἀποτοξινώσεως καί ἐπανεντάξεως τῶν ἐν λόγῳ θυµάτων, καθώς καί Ἐπιστηµονικῶν Τµηµάτων Ἐρεύνης εἰς τά σχετικά προβλήµατα. γ) Ἡ Ἐκδοτική ἑταιρία τῆς Ἱερᾶς Ἀρχιεπισκοπῆς «St. Andrew s Orthodox Press», γιά ἐκδόσεις τῆς Θεολογικῆς µας Σχολῆς, καί γιά Ἐκκλησιαστική Ἐφηµερίδα, πού θά ἀποτελεῖ τόν καθρέπτη ὁλοκλήρου τῆς Ὁµογενείας στήν Ε Ἤπειρο, σέ ὅλες τίς δραστηριότητες, τά προβλήµατα καί τούς ἀγῶνες της, γι αὐτό καί διανέµεται εἰς τούς ἀνά τήν Αὐστραλίαν Ἱερούς Ναούς µας. Ἐπί τοῦ παρόντος ἡ ἐν λόγῳ Ἐφηµερίδα θά εἶναι µηνιαία, τήν προσέφερε δέ τελείως δωρεάν ὁ λαµπρός Ὁµογενής καί δραστήριος Ἐπιχειρηµατίας κ. Γρηγόρης Γαβριηλίδης, µέ τό νά δωρήσει εἰς τήν Ἱεράν Ἀρχιεπισκοπήν τήν ἀπό τοῦ 1913 ἐκδιδοµένη στό Σύδνεϋ Ἐφηµερίδα «ΤΟ ΒΗΜΑ», τήν ἀρχαιότερη Ἑλληνική Ἐφηµερίδα τῶν Ἀντιπόδων. Ἕνα ἄλλο καθαρῶς ἐκκλησιολογικό γεγονός, ἦτο ἡ διά πρώτη φορά τόν Ὀκτώβριο τοῦ 2010 σύγκλησις τῆς λεγοµένης «Ἐπισκοπικῆς Συνελεύσεως», δηλαδή τῶν Κανονικῶν Ἀρχιερέων τῆς περιοχῆς Ὠκεανίας, πρός ἐνίσχυσιν τῆς διορθοδόξου συνεργασίας καί µαρτυρίας µεταξύ τῶν διαφόρων Ὀρθοδόξων Δικαιοδοσιῶν. Σταθµό γιά τήν Ἐκκλησία καί τήν Ὁµογένεια, ἀπετέλεσαν οἱ Ἑορτασµοί τόν Φεβρουάριο τοῦ 2011, γιά τά 25 χρόνια ἀπό τήν ἵδρυση καί λειτουργία τῆς Θεολογικῆς Σχολῆς τοῦ Ἀποστόλου Ἀνδρέου, µέ ἐπίσηµο Δεῖπνο καί 5

συνάντηση (reunion) ὅλων τῶν ἀποφοίτων τῆς Σχολῆς, Κληρικῶν καί λαϊκῶν. Ἀποκορύφωµα ὅµως τῶν ἑορτασµῶν, ἦτο ἡ παµψηφεί ἐκλογή, κατόπιν εἰσηγήσεως τοῦ Σεβασµιωτάτου Ἀρχιεπισκόπου κ.κ. Στυλιανοῦ πρός τήν Α.Θ. Παναγιότητα καί τήν Ἱ. Σύνοδον τοῦ Οἰκουµενικοῦ µας Πατριαρχείου, καί χειροτονία τοῦ πρώτου Αὐστραλογεννηµένου καί ἐκ τῶν Ἀποφοίτων αὐτῆς Ἀρχιµ. Ἰακώβου Τσιγκούνη εἰς Ἐπίσκοπον Μιλητουπόλεως. Ἐξ ἴσου σηµαντικό γεγονός ἀπετέλεσε διά τήν Ἀρχιεπισκοπή µας καί τό διοργανωθέν ἐν Σύδνεϋ Παναυστραλιανό Ἐπίσηµο Δεῖπνον, τόν Μάιο τοῦ 2015, διά νά ἑορτασθεῖ ἡ συµπλήρωσις 40 ἐτῶν Ποιµαντορίας ἐν Αὐστραλίᾳ τοῦ Σεβασµιωτάτου Ἀρχιεπισκόπου κ.κ. Στυλιανοῦ. Εἰς τό Δεῖπνον παρεκάθησαν πολλοί ἐπίσηµοι καί ὑπέρ τῶν 850 συνδαιτυµόνων, ἀπεστάλη δέ ὑπό τῆς Α.Θ. Παναγιότητος τοῦ Οἰκουµενικοῦ Πατριάρχου κ.κ. Βαρθολοµαίου, ὡς Ἀντιπρόσωπος Αὐτοῦ, ὁ Μητροπολίτης Κορέας κ. Ἀµβρόσιος ὁ ὁποῖος καί ἀνέγνωσε Μήνυµα τοῦ Πατριάρχου. Ὡς Ἀρχιεπίσκοπος Αὐστραλίας ἐκοιμήθη ἐν Κυρίῳ ἀνήμερα τῆς κοσμοσωτηρίου Ἐορτῆς τοῦ Εὐαγγελισμοῦ τῆς Θεοτόκου, τήν Δευτέρα, 25η Μαρτίου 2019, εἰς ἡλικίαν 83 ἐτῶν. Ἀρχιεπίσκος Αὐστραλίας κυρὸς Στυλιανὸς ὁ Ἀκαδημαϊκὸς κὰι Λογοτέχνης Γεννηθείς εἰς τό Ρέθυμνο Κρήτης (29-12-35), ἐσπούδασε εἰς τήν Θεολογική Σχολή Χάλκης Κωνσταντινουπόλεως. Περί τά τέλη τοῦ 1957 ἐχειροτονήθη εἰς Διάκονον ἐν Χάλκῃ, λαβών τό Πτυχίο τῆς Θεολογίας. Ἐχειροτονήθη εἰς τό Ρέθυμνο τό 1958 εἰς Πρεσβύτερον, καί ἔλαβε ὑποτροφία ἀπό τό Οἰκουμενικό Πατριαρχεῖο γιά νά πραγματοποιήσει Μεταπτυχιακάς σπουδάς Συστηματικῆς Θεολογίας καί Φιλοσοφίας τῆς Θρησκείας ἐν Βόννῃ, τότε Δ. Γερμανίας (1958-1966). Διά νά ἀνακηρυχθεῖ Διδάκτωρ Θεολογίας ἀπό Ὀρθόδοξο Θεολογική Σχολή, καί ὄχι νά λάβει Διδακτορίαν ἀναλόγου ἑτεροδόξου Πανεπιστημιακῆς Σχολῆς τῆς Δύσεως, ὑπέβαλε τό 1965 τήν ἐπί Διδακτορίᾳ Διατριβή του «ΠΕΡΙ ΤΟ ΑΛΑΘΗΤΟΝ ΤΗΣ ΕΚΚΛΗΣΙΑΣ ΕΝ Τῌ ΟΡΘΟΔΟΞῼ ΘΕΟΛΟΓΙᾼ» (ἑλληνιστί), εἰς τήν Θεολογική Σχολή τοῦ Πανεπιστημίου Ἀθηνῶν καί ἀνεκηρύχθη Διδάκτωρ μέ βαθμό ἄριστα. Ἐπιστρέψας ἐκ Γερμανίας τό 1966, διωρίσθηκε Ἡγούμενος τῆς ἐν Θεσσαλονίκῃ Ἱστορικῆς Πατριαρχικῆς Μονῆς τῶν Βλατάδων (14ου αἰ.), λαβών τήν ἐντολήν ἀπό τήν Ἱερά Σύνοδο τοῦ Οἰκ. Πατριαρχείου νά συνεργασθεῖ μέ ἄλλους ἐπιστήμονας τῆς ἐν Θεσσαλονίκῃ Θεολογικῆς Σχολῆς, πρός ἵδρυση ἐντός τῆς Ἱστορικῆς Μονῆς τoῦ γνωστοῦ σήμερα «Πατριαρχικοῦ Ἱδρύματος Πατερικῶν Μελετῶν». Συντόμως, κατέστη Ἀντιπρόεδρος τοῦ ἐρευνητικοῦ τούτου Κέντρου, καί μετά λίγους μῆνας Πρόεδρος αὐτοῦ. Μέ τήν ἀποπεράτωση τῆς ἐπί 6

Ὑφηγεσίᾳ Διατριβῆς του, ὑπό τόν τίτλο «ΤΟ ΠΕΡΙ ΕΚΚΛΗΣΙΑΣ ΣΥΝΤΑΓΜΑ ΤΗΣ Β ΒΑΤΙΚΑΝΗΣ ΣΥΝΟ- ΔΟΥ» (Θεσσαλονίκη, 1969), ἀνεκηρύχθη Ὑφηγητής τῆς Θεολογικῆς Σχολῆς τοῦ Ἀριστοτελείου Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλονίκης. Εἰς τά ἀμέσως ἑπόμενα χρόνια, ἐδίδαξε σέ διάφορες Θεολογικές Σχολές καί Ἀκαδημαϊκά Ἱδρύματα, ἐντός καί ἐκτός Ἑλλάδος, ἰδιαίτερως δέ ἐν τῇ ἐν Regensburg Δ. Γερμανίας Ρωμαιοκαθολικῇ Θεολογικῇ Σχολῇ τοῦ Πανεπιστημίου (1973). Περί τό τέλος τοῦ 1970 εἶχε ἐκλεγεῖ παμψηφεί ἀπό τήν ἐν Κωνσταντινουπόλει Ἁγία καί Ἱερά Σύνοδο, Τιτουλάριος Μητροπολίτης Μιλητουπόλεως καί Ἔξαρχος τοῦ Οἰκ. Πατριαρχείου διά τό Ἅγιον Ὄρος. Πέντε χρόνια ἀργότερα, καί πάλι παμψηφεί, ἐξελέγη Ἀρχιεπίσκοπος Αὐστραλίας, ἀφιχθείς εἰς τό Σύδνεϋ τόν Ἀπρίλιο τοῦ 1975. Ἐδημοσίευσε πλεῖστα ὅσα ἐπί θεμάτων Συστηματικῆς Θεολογίας, ἰδίως δέ Ἐκκλησιολογίας, σέ διεθνῆ θεολογικά περιοδικά, καί ἐξεπροσώπησε τό Οἰκ. Πατριαρχεῖον σέ Συνελεύσεις τοῦ Παγκοσμίου Συμβουλίου Ἐκκλησιῶν καί σέ Διμερεῖς Θεολογικούς Διαλόγους. Ἀπό τό 1975 ἐδίδαξε ἀρκετά χρόνια Ὀρθόδοξη Θεολογία καί Πνευματικότητα εἰς τό Πανεπιστήμιο τοῦ Σύδνεϋ. Ἐξελέγη παμψηφεί ἀπό ὅλους τούς Ἐκπροσώπους τῶν Ὀρθοδόξων Ἐκκλησιῶν, ὡς ὁ μόνιμος Πρόεδρος Αὐτῶν, εἰς τόν Ἐπίσημο Θεολογικό Διάλογο μετά τῆς Ρωμαιοκαθολικῆς Ἐκκλησίας (Πάτμος-Ρόδος, 1980), ἔχων Συμπρόεδρον, ἐκ μέρους τῶν Ρωμαιοκαθολικῶν, τόν ὑπό τοῦ Βατικανοῦ ὁρισθέντα Καρδινάλιο Johannes Willebrands. Ἀφοῦ ὑπηρέτησε εὐόρκως ἐπί δύο καί πλέον δεκαετίας εἰς αὐτήν τήν ἄκρως ὑπεύθυνη καί δυσχερῆ θέση, ὑπέβαλε διά τρίτη φορά (15-4-2003) τήν ἐκ τοῦ Διαλόγου παραίτησή του χωρίς νά ὑποχωρήσει πλέον, ὅπως εἶχε γίνει τίς δύο προηγούμενες φορές, ὅτε δέν εἶχε γίνει δεκτή ἐκ Φαναρίου ἡ ἐν λόγῳ παραίτηση. Συγχρόνως, μέ τήν ὁριστική παραίτησή του, ἐδημοσίευσε ἐκτενῆ Ἔκθεση εἰς τήν Ἐπιστημονικήν Ἐπετηρίδα τῆς Θεολογικῆς Σχολῆς τοῦ Ἀριστοτελείου Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλονίκης, ὑπό τόν τίτλο «ΠΕΡΙ ΤΗΝ ΚΑΚΟΔΑΙΜΟΝΙΑΝ ΤΟΥ ΕΠΙΣΗΜΟΥ ΘΕΟΛΟΓΙΚΟΥ ΔΙΑΛΟΓΟΥ ΟΡΘΟΔΟΞΩΝ ΚΑΙ ΡΩΜΑΙΟΚΑΘΟΛΙΚΩΝ» (τομ. 13, Θεσσαλονίκη 2003). 7

Εἶναι ἐπίσης ἀνεγνωρισμένος Δοκιμιογράφος καί Ποιητής, ἔχων δημοσιεύσει 37 αὐτοτελεῖς Ποιητικές Συλλογές (ὅλες εἰς τά ἑλληνικά, καί μερικές σέ δίγλωσση ἔκδοση μέ ἀγγλική μετάφραση). Διά τήν οὐσιαστική συμβολή του εἰς τόν Εὐρωπαϊκό Πολιτισμό, ἔλαβε ἀπό τήν ἁρμοδία Ἑλλανόδικο Ἐπιτροπή τό ὑψηλοῦ κύρους Βραβεῖο «Gottfried von Herder Prize» ἀπό τό Πανεπιστήμιο τῆς Βιέννης (1973), μέ κύριον εἰσηγητή τόν διεθνῶς διαπρεπῆ Κλασσικό Φιλόλογο Καθηγητή τοῦ Πανεπιστημίου Βιέννης Albin Lesky. Λίγα χρόνια ἀργότερα, μέ κύριον εἰσηγητή τόν διεθνῶς γνωστό Συγγραφέα Παντελῆ Πρεβελάκη, ὁ Ἀρχιεπίσκοπος Στυλιανός ἔλαβε τό Βραβεῖο Ποιήσεως ἀπό τήν Ἀκαδημία Ἀθηνῶν, γιά τό ἔτος 1980. Τό Πανεπιστήμιον Lublin Πολωνίας τόν ἀνεκήρυξε Ἐπίτιμο Διδάκτορα (1985), ἐνῷ τό Συλλογικό Σῶμα τῶν ἐν Σύδνεϋ Θεολογικῶν Σχολῶν (Sydney College of Divinity), ἀνεκήρυξε τοῦτον πρῶτον Ἐπίτιμο Διδάκτορά του (2001). Ἀπό τό ἴδιο Συλλογικό Ἀκαδημαϊκό Σῶμα, καί μέ ἀξιολόγηση ἀπό ἀνεξάρτητη Ἀκαδημαϊκή Ἐπιτροπή διαφόρων Σχολῶν, ἀνεγνωρίσθη ἐπισήμως ὡς Καθηγητής. Τό Πανεπιστήμιον Κρήτης ἐπίσης (Σχολή Ἐπιστημῶν τῆς Ἀγωγῆς) τόν ἀνεκήρυξε Ἐπίτιμο Διδάκτορα (2014). Γνωστός ἀπό τό 1986, ὡς ὁ Ἱδρυτής καί Κοσμήτωρ τῆς Θεολογικῆς Σχολῆς τοῦ Ἀπ. Ἀνδρέου, ἐδίδασκε ἔκτοτε εἰς αὐτήν τά μαθήματα Συστηματικῆς Θεολογίας. 8

Main Pastoral Milestones and Ecclesiastical Achievements of the ever-remembered Archbishop of Australia Stylianos of blessed memory Archbishop Stylianos (Harkianakis) of blessed memory, the ever-remembered Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in Australia, was born in Rethymnon, Crete, Greece, in 1935 and studied theology at the Theological School of Halki, Constantinople. In 1970, as Abbott of the Vlattades Monastery in Thessaloniki and Lecturer at the University of Thessaloniki, he was unanimously elected Metropolitan of Militoupolis and Exarch of Mt. Athos. On the 3rd February 1975 the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate unanimously elected him Archbishop of Australia. He arrived in Sydney on the 15th April 1975 and was officially enthroned on Lazarus Saturday on the 26th April 1975. The new Archbishop, respecting the work of his predecessors in erecting churches and other benevolent institutions, took on as one of his special concerns the social and cultural development of his flock with the systematic cultivation and promotion of the spiritual treasure of the Greek Orthodox Tradition. In order to achieve this, he created closer contact between Orthodox and non-orthodox churches in Australia and with the educational centres of this country. The Archbishop was officially appointed to the University of Sydney to teach Orthodox theology. Apart from this he continued to be a permanent member of various Christian Theological Commissions. The establishment of new churches and other benevolent institutions continued under the inspiration of the new Archbishop. However, priority was given to the promotion of the spiritual and cultural treasures of the Greek Orthodox Tradition. This was the aim also of the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the Archdiocese in 1976, which included an entire range of events with positive repercussions not only within the Greek community but in the Australian society at large. The new Archbishop encouraged the rapid growth of the Archdiocesan organization of St Basil s Hostels and Nursing Homes for the frail elderly in every State. A decisive landmark for ecclesiastical matters occurred with the 4th Clergy-Laity Congress which took place in January 1981. The importance of this historic Congress cannot only be seen in the fact that the Governor-General 9

of Australia opened its proceedings, but also in the presence, for the first time, of official representatives of the Patriarchate, as well as special representatives of the Greek Government and Australia s Greek Ambassador. Of equally great importance and success were the 5th Clergy-Laity Congress in Brisbane in January 1985, the 6th in Melbourne in January 1989, the 7th in Sydney in January 1993, the 8th in Sydney in January 1998, the 9th in Sydney in January 2003, as well as the 10th again in Sydney in January 2008. With a delay of one year in 2013, the 11th Clergy-Laity Congress was held in the new multi-purpose hall of St Spyridon College. For the first time, His All Holiness addressed all the delegates in a live message via Skype. This new and blessed period of our Archdiocese characterized, amongst other things, by the ordination of many new priests, the sponsoring of spiritual fathers from Mt. Athos and other spiritual people from Greece, pilgrimages to the Holy Land and the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the establishment of the Standing Conference of Canonical Orthodox Churches of Australia (SCCOCA) under the permanent presidency of the representative of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the Archbishop of Australia. A pioneering initiative in 1983 was the establishment of the system of Greek Orthodox Day Schools in the major States for the children and youth. The Estia Foundation of Australia, established in 1994 as a mission of St Andrew s Parish at Gladesville in Sydney, was an initiative of Archbishop Stylianos, which provides services to people with severe disabilities. This initiative was later followed by St. John the Baptist Parish in Cairns, Queensland, with the establishment of St John s Community Care Ltd which is committed to caring for both elderly and young people with disabilities. The climax of the work of the Archdiocese by the Archbishop was seen in the completion, after many long efforts, of the establishment of St. Andrew s Theological College. The College curriculum is recognized as equivalent to university courses in Australia and Greece. Important, too, were the National Youth Conferences held since 1982 in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane as well as the alternate State Youth Conferences, all of which were the outcome of the resolution of the 4th Clergy-Laity Congress. A great milestone in the life of our church and people in Australia was of 10

course the historic Official Visit of His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in November 1996. During the anniversary celebrations of the year 2000, the Archbishop took significant steps to establish relevant institutions, councils and committees as part of its ongoing efforts towards spiritual development. First of all, the Millennium Heritage Council was formed, comprising representatives of both genders from various States around Australia. Arising from that Council were the following initiatives: a) The 200 member Millennium Choir of the Archdiocese which, together with the Children s Choir drawn from the Orthodox Day Schools in Sydney, brought worldwide recognition to the Greek Australian community, through their splendid participation in the historic Olympic Games of Sydney 2000. b) The pioneering ProviCare Foundation (whose name derives from the providence of God and human care, so that both the divine and human aspects of the Church could be appreciated in an Orthodox manner). The highly painful and responsible concern of this Foundation continues to be one which offers every possible assistance to the growing number of victims of alcohol and drug abuse. c) The establishment of St Andrew s Orthodox Press, for the publications of our Theological College, as well as of our Church newspaper (VEMA), which is the mirror of our entire community in Australia, covering Greek Australian issues and projects. The oldest Greek newspaper in Australia, having been established in Sydney in 1913, the VEMA was a gift given completely freely to the Church by the prominent and industrious businessman Mr Greg Gavrielides. Another important ecclesial event during the Archbishop s tenure was the convening of the first Episcopal Assembly of all canonical Hierarchs of the Oceania region in October 2010, to strengthen inter-orthodox co-operation and witness among the various Orthodox jurisdictions. A further milestone in the life of our Church and community were the celebrations in February 2011 of the 25th anniversary since the establishment of St Andrew s Theological College, including an official Dinner and a reunion of all the graduates, both Clergy and lay. The climax of these celebrations was the unanimous election of one of the College s graduates, Archimandrite Iakovos Tsigounis, as the first Australian-born Bishop of our Archdiocese, following his nomination by His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos to His All Holiness and the Holy Synod of our Ecumenical Patriarchate. 11

An equally important event for our Archdiocese was also the National Official Dinner, organised in Sydney during the month of May 2015, for His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos in order to celebrate forty years of Episcopal service in Australia. More than 850 attended this milestone function. His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew sent His Eminence Metropolitan Ambrosios of Korea as his representative who also read the Patriarchal Message. As Archbishop of Australia, he slept in the Lord on the Feast of the Annunciation of our Lady Theotokos, Monday 25th March 2019, at 83 years of age. Archbishop Stylianos of Australia - Academic and Distinguished Poet Archbishop Stylianos studied at the Theological School of Halki, Constantinople. In late 1957, he was ordained to the Diaconate. Upon graduating and being ordained to the Priesthood in 1958, he received a scholarship from the Ecumenical Patriarchate to complete postgraduate studies in Systematic Theology and Philosophy of Religion in Bonn, W. Germany (1958-1966). In order to become a Doctor of Divinity from an Orthodox Theological Faculty, rather than from an analogous western Faculty, he submitted in 1965 his doctoral dissertation entitled The Infallibility of the Church in Orthodox Theology [in Greek], to the Theological Faculty of the University of Athens. As Abbot of the historic Patriarchal Monastery of Vlattades, he established, together with other scholars of the local Theological Faculty, what was to be called The Patriarchal Institute of Patristic Studies. He soon became the Vice-President of that research centre, a role had for a few months before be- 12

coming President. Upon completing his post-doctoral dissertation under the title The Dogmatic Constitution De Ecclesia of the Second Vatican Council (Thessaloniki), he became Associate Professor at the University of Thessaloniki in 1969. In the years immediately following, he also lectured at various Faculties and academic institutions, within Greece and Abroad, especially at the University of Regensburg, W. Germany, in 1973. He was unanimously elected by the Holy Synod of Constantinople as Titular Metropolitan of Militoupolis and Exarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate for Mount Athos in 1970 (residing at the Monastery of Vlatades). The Archbishop published widely in Systematic Theology and Ecclesiology in international theological journals, and represented the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Assemblies of the World Council of Churches and in bilateral Dialogues. From 1975 he also taught Orthodox theology and spirituality at the University of Sydney. He was unanimously elected in 1980 by all representatives of Orthodox Churches as their Chairman in the official Theological Dialogue with the Roman Catholic Church, while his Co-Chair, Cardinal Johannes Willebrands, was appointed by the Vatican. After serving faithfully for more than two decades in this highly responsible and difficult position, he tendered his third and final resignation (15th April 2003) having attempted this twice before without acceptance when he published an extensive Report, titled The Misfortune of the Official Theological Dialogue between the Orthodox and the Roman Catholics ([in Greek] Epistimoniki Epetirida of the Theological School, Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki, vol. 13, 2003). He is also a recognized essayist and poet, having published over 40 collections of poetry (all of these in Greek and some translated Bilingual editions). For his outstanding contribution to European culture, and after being nominated by the distinguished Philologist of the University of Vienna, Professor Albin Lesky, he received from the relevant Committee the prestigious international award Gottfried von Herder in Vienna, 1973. Then, in 1980, having been nominated by the renowned writer Pantelis Prevelakis, Archbishop Stylianos received the Award for Poetry from the Academy of Athens. The University of Lublin, Poland, conferred on him an honorary doctorate (1985), while the Sydney College of Divinity awarded him its first ever honorary doctorate (2001). In 13

2005, he was acknowledged as a Professor by an independent academic panel of the Sydney College of Divinity. In 2014, he received Honorary Doctorate from the University of Crete. Archbishop Stylianos was also the Founding Dean (in 1986) of St Andrew s Greek Orthodox Theological College, Sydney, where he lectured in Systematic Theology. 14
