THE SOURCE February 2015 Issue # 2-15 HOLY TRINIT RINITY GREE REEK ORTHODO RTHODOX CATHEDRA THEDRAL CAMP HILL ILL,, PA In honor of the recent Canonization of the Holy Elder Paisios as an official saint of the church by Ecumenical Patriarch in January, I thought I d give you some of this thoughts this month. - Fr. Mark THE PURIFICATION OF THE SOUL For we are the temple of the living God; as God said, I will live in them and move among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Therefore touching nothing unclean; then I will welcome you, and I will be a father to you, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty. Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, and make holiness perfect in the fear of God. (2Cor 6:16-18, 7:1) You must look after the purification of your soul on a daily basis. Do your spiritual work and say the Jesus prayer. Your thoughts, will and desires are where your mind is. The submission of our spirit is the most important thing. In order to acquire a virtue, we must be humble and careful, so we can detect its opposite evil, and then pray to Christ to help us get rid of it. We don t need to try too hard or be concerned how, when and in what way our heart will be able to acquire this virtue. - Father, when we read the writings of the Fathers of the Church, we notice the following phenomenon: some saints say that praying is of utmost importance and others talk about obedience or voluntary poverty. It is hard for someone to understand exactly what Christ is asking from us. When we think we must apply all these virtues at the same time, then we despair, as it is impossible to struggle for all of them at once. Our endeavor becomes a lot easier, when we realise that the acquisition of these virtues is the result of a single struggle. Could you please help me understand what exactly I should do in order to find the way leading to Christ? The Elder told me the following: - Purification, divine justice, humility, love, obedience, voluntary poverty, and all virtues are one and the same. Christ wants us to eliminate our will to zero. If you obtain a single one of these virtues, bear in mind, that the rest are found in the one you just acquired; the same thing applies to our passions; one passion includes all others. Purification requires the soul to be pure and clean from our own will; divine justice is the abandonment of our own will to the will of God; humility is to humble our will and elevate God s will; obedience means not to have a will and thus obey other people; prayer means to take our mind off our wishes and desires and concentrate on God. So, you see whichever virtue you apply, you are led to the same result, that is, to the elimination and purification of your own will. Man will spiritually progress and be benefited only when he manages to eliminate his will to zero. When the Americans want to send a missile to

THE SOURCE FEBRUARY 2015 Page 2 space, they do the same thing; they count from ten to zero. When they reach zero, then the missile is fired. The same applies to our soul; when our wills are eliminated to zero and our soul is cleansed, then it is elevated towards God! The grace of God entered our soul through the Holy Baptism; it is a gift granted to all of us. Sometimes, we think that God gave to a saint more gifts than others; this is wrong. Christ loves all of His children the same; it is we, however, who do not value and appreciate God s gift to the same degree. When someone is grateful and believes that the grace of Christ, which he received through Holy Baptism, is inside his soul, he humbles his own will and purifies himself in order to allow divine grace to function. When divine grace functions inside a soul, it makes us think that God favored this person with more gifts. However, the truth is that this person loves Christ more, and through his humility, permits God to act on his behalf. We are in no way inferior to the Apostles. The Apostles were physically close to Christ, who helped them; however, we, too, have Him inside our soul since a very young age, through the grace of Holy Baptism. We should unload our soul from our passions and let divine grace dwell inside us. The more we purify ourselves, the more we allow for divine grace to function. When a soul is completely clean from its will and is totally humbled, then it can experience the grace of Christ and the fulfillment of all His promises. Since the term purification of the soul was in a way unknown to me, I frequently asked the Elder to analyse it in detail. He suggested reading some sections of the Holy Bible, which would make it possible for me to turn inwards and face the ugliness of my soul, and thus gradually begin its purification. Following are some of these texts: 2Tim 2:20-21. In a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver but also of wood and earthenware, and some for noble use, some for ignoble. If anyone purifies himself from what is ignoble, then he will be a vessel for noble use, consecrated and useful to the master of the house, ready for any good work. 2Cor 7:1. Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, and make holiness perfect in the fear of God. 2Cor 10:3-5. For though we live in the world we are not carrying on a worldly war, for the weapons of our warfare are not worldly but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every proud obstacle to the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ. Phil 2:5-9. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name. Mt 5:8. Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God. Mt 23:26. You blind Pharisee! First cleanse the inside of the cup and of the plate, and then the outside also will be clean. Lk 11:39. Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of extortion and wickedness. Priestmonk Christodoulos (1998) Elder Paisios of the Holy Mountain Holy Mountain.

THE SOURCE FEBRUARY 2015 Page 5 Dear Parishioners A NOTE FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL Although many of you may not realize it, the New Year marks the kickoff of our Annual Festival. Kind of like running a Marathon (ask our very own Dan Shay), our Festival can be grueling, exhaustive and push you to the point of breaking both physically and emotionally. But talk to any marathon runner and they ll tell you the feeling of pride and accomplishment they have when they finish is unlike any other feeling they ve experienced. Your church needs you! The Festival is not just 3 busy days in May. It starts now, and continues for 2 weeks AFTER Festival weekend. For months leading up to Festival week, there are many preparations that need to take place: Pastries have to be baked and put away Full weekends are devoted to making and putting away Pastitsio and Mousaka Hundreds of supplies and ingredients need to be ordered, received and put away Tents and rental equipment needs to be ordered Advertising is sold, menus and flyers are printed and handed out to parishioners and businesses, signs placed along nearby highways, and news and radio stations are contacted The week before the Festival itself is very busy. Each individual booth needs to be constructed and prepared for guest arrival on Friday. Food needs to be prepared. There are THOUSANDS of tasks that need to be done. The week after the Festival in some ways can be the most difficult of all. At this point, everyone wants to rest and get back to their normal routine. However, there is leftover food to be thrown away, put away, or donated to shelters. Everything must be cleaned up and put away. Rented equipment must be returned, and the grounds need to be cleaned up. Every year, for over 40 years, it feels like it s not going to happen, but somehow, it always does. It s a big job, and it needs each and every one of us. All of us have a talent that can help. The biggest thing you can do differently this year than in past years is to commit, to specific jobs, at specific times. Let a chairperson know how you are willing to help and when you ll be able to help. Better yet, volunteer to take responsibility for one of the subcommittees. It s great to have help but it s even better to have leadership. Above all, remember to do your work willingly, as though you were serving the Lord himself, and not just your earthly master. In fact, the Lord Christ is the one you are really serving, and you know he will reward you. - Colossians 3:23-24 George J. Spanos

Kosta *6:30PM Great Compline, a wonderful service to mark the first day of Lent! This is a penitential office that lasts approximately one hour. The dominating them is repentance, as we entreat the Lord to forgive us of our numerous sins during the course of the day and to protect us from the evil fantasies of the night and the darts of the evil one which are insidiously thrown against us. It includes the hymn, God is With Us, and the Prayer of Saint Ephraim. The service is customary for the end of the day (after Vespers and before the Midnight Office) and is celebrated regularly in the monasteries. There are reader versions available which we may also do in our own homes as our evening prayers. Tuesday 24 th 10:00AM-11:00 Abundant Life Bible Study with Fr. THE SOURCE FEBRUARY 2015 Page 10 SATURDAY OF SOULS - February 14, 21, 28 The Orthodox Church has designated certain days of the year for special prayer services for the dead: The Saturday before Meat Fare Week and Cheese Fare Week and the Saturday before the first Sunday in Lent, February 14, 21, 28. The Saturday prior to Pentecost, May 30, is also a Saturday of Souls. On these days, the Church remembers all the saints and our deceased loved ones. Our Church prays for all the dead to express their faith that all who have fallen asleep in the Lord live in the Lord. Whether on earth or in heaven, the Church is a single family, one body in Christ. Death changes the location, but it cannot sever the bond of love. On Memorial Saturdays, the liturgical hymns pray universally for all of the departed. "With the saints, give rest Oh Lord to the souls of your servants, where there is no pain or suffering, but life everlasting." May their memory be eternal! Prepare a tray of koliva and/or complete and cut out the section below and return it to the church office (List first names only) In Memory of Υπέρ αναπαύσεως των δούλων του Θεού)

THE SOURCE FEBRUARY 2015 Page 13 MAY GREEK FESTIVAL HELP May 15-16 16-17, 17, 2015 As all of you know our annual Greek Festival is the largest fundraising activity for our Church and requires a lot of work from many parishioners. Presently, almost 50% of our Church s annual budget income comes from the Festival. The need is clear, everyone who can must get involved and share the burden in order for this annual undertaking of our community to succeed. To ensure we have enough help, we would like to have firm commitments (3, 6 or 12 hours) from as many parishioners as possible for the assignment of various work tasks during the 3 festival days. If you would like to financially support the cost of the festival, please write a check to: Holy Trinity Cathedral and under memo include festival expenses. Please check the stands (work tasks) and circle the times you would like to help during the festival days, include your name/telephone/ email and someone will contact you. Please email your information to secretary@holytrinityhbg.org or drop off this form to the Church office. U.S. POSTAGE PAID Harrisburg, PA Permit No. 112 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ADVERTISING IN THE SOURCE In an effort to contain printing costs for monthly newsletters, many churches have turned to paid advertisements in their publications. Parish Council has agreed to adopt this funding source for our monthly publication. Doing this would help lessen and possibly erase the expense of publishing the Source. We now have availability for two pages of paid ads in our monthly Source. The ad price will represent a year of advertising or 11 issues as we combine the June and July Source into one issue. Ads are sold by the block. There will be room for 24 ads or blocks per page. You may purchase more than one block for increased space and presentation. The cost of one ad block is $125 per year, and subsequent blocks would be an additional $100 per block. For example, a business card ad would equal two blocks and would cost $225. Camera ready ads are appreciated but not required. Please help us promote this program. If you own or work for a business that may be interested in advertising in our Source which is sent out to over 600 families, please contact Mary in the church office. If you know of a business that may be a potential advertiser, please pass on a contact and phone number. Examples of businesses that may be interested in advertising could be Greek bands, importers, baptismal supplies/clothing stores, and jewelers specializing in crosses. Other possibilities could be lawyers, accountants, real estate agents, etc. The only ads we cannot accept are ones pertaining to credit cards, travel, or insurance. Please contact the church office as soon as possible if interested in this program.
