ITALY, GREECE AND CYPRUS CULTURAL TOUR On 26 June 2011, fifteen students from St. Euphemia College gathered at Sydney International Airport, awaiting a once in a lifetime opportunity. The Italy, Greece and Cyprus Tour! Our anticipation and excitement overshadowed the few tears we shed when we farewelled our families. For many students this was the first time they were going overseas and a first true experience of independence. After stopping at Bangkok and Dubai, everyone was relieved to have finally reached our destination, Italy. From the moment we sat on the tour bus, we were mesmerised by what we saw. Countless Smart cars and Vespas roamed the streets of Italy. We also enjoyed our first samples of authentic Italian pizza, pasta and gelato. After seeing so many sites in Rome, Vatican City, Sorrento, Pompeii and Herculaneum, Italy definitely did not disappoint. I must say, postcards truly don t do justice to the Fontana Di Trevi or the Colosseum. By the time we left, I think we all had a pretty good idea of who the famous Michelangelo was and why. Italy truly was a magnificent start to our trip. We even picked up the language quickly, learning words such as ciao, mi skouzi, grazie, prego and arrivederchi. Upon departing from Italy, our excitement for Greece didn t leave any room for sadness. I m not sure whether it was the beaches, the ancient sites, the amazing ocean views, the homely feeling or the food at Thanasi s Taverna, but everybody seemed to really enjoy and appreciate Greece. Once again, we saw so many beautiful sites such as the Parthenon. We witnessed the changing of the guards in Athens, the dazzling blue of the Corinth Canal, we ate baklava and loukoumades in Nafplio, enjoyed the captivating views at Delphi and we ran on the ancient Olympic track. Boarding Olympic Airways we headed for Cyprus! It might have been the fact that we would be staying at the Hilton Park Hotel for 6 nights, compliments of the Cypriot Government, but Cyprus was a great end to our school trip. The touring was sad as we learnt of the pain felt by many civilians due to the Turkish invasion and the British occupation of Cyprus. However, going to the beautiful beach of Agia Napa and socialising with students our age from America, definitely lightened the mood and gave Cyprus swag points as our U.S. friends liked to say. Overall, the trip was absolutely amazing! The ten days we spent with our families topped it all off! We thank our teachers, Mrs. Papastimatis and Mr. Theodoulou, who advised us and looked after us like our parents for the duration of the trip. We did however learn to rely on ourselves a lot more, not having our parents there to wash our clothes or to tell us what or what not to buy. I speak on behalf of all who attended when I say that the Italy, Greece and Cyprus Tour of 2011, provided us with wonderful memories and hundreds of photographs! Georgia Pupulas
TENNIS TACTICS During the July school break, Year 11 student, Miljan Ruzic, travelled to Europe to play tennis at the ATP Future Events. Miljan trained with Coach Dejan Petrovic, the former coach of Novak Djokovic and Jelena Jankovic. The gruelling training sessions involved endurance and fitness training as well as learning skilful tactics. Miljan played four tournaments in Belgrade and Australia. He is currently ranked 206 in Australia. The trip to Europe was a rewarding experience as he gained an understanding of professional tennis at an international level and learned many new skills.
WOLF EXCURSION! Some stories scare us, but some make us brave. On 28 July, Year 9 Drama and Year 11 English Extension 1 students attended a theatrical performance at the majestical Opera House. During the performance we all found out how truly brave we are! The Physical Theatre production Wolf by Sligsby Theatre Company explored the idea of why parents read fairytales to their children and how we allow fear to dictate our lives. The use of Physical Theatre, dance and music resulted in a clever and original production that was entertaining, thought provoking and educational. The performance was followed by discussions of valued texts and their appropriations in popular culture. Lunch at Pancakes at the Rocks was truly delicious! Angelique Souris and Stephanie Papaioannou
