GCF GOLF OUTING 2011

PASTORAL MESSAGE Dear Parishioners of our Beloved Assumption, Many of us have heard this folk wisdom: Everyone wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die, or no pain - no gain. In both instances there is an alluding to a sacrifice that must be made in order to receive a predefined reward. On a theoretical level, without a context, it is simply that comfortable means yield uncomfortable results and vice versa, uncomfortable means yield comfortable results. This is no different with regards to what we have been asked to give to the Lord: let us commit ourselves and one another and our whole life to Christ our God. Given this perspective: How much should we fast? How much should we volunteer our talents? How much time should we give to prayer? How much should we offer in stewardship? The answer to all of these questions is as much as you are able to and then a little more so that it hurts a little and is thus a true sacrifice. If it doesn t hurt a little, then we ve lied to ourselves with regards to our ability. So many of us spend more a month on our television service or on car insurance or payments than we offer in stewardship; and, most of us give much more to the government then we do to His ministries. We offer more time to watching television than we do to the Lord through our participation in worship, prayer and study of the scripture. Isn t it time we look at ourselves and how our allocation of time, talent and treasures exposes what is truly important to us? Should this allocation change? Thanking the Lord for His Blessings on us, I remain in His Service, Rev. Father Jon Boukis PROISTAMENOS

SUNDAY SCHOOL Cereal Club Each month our Sunday School children of the level 2 class will each bring in a box of cereal to aid in the fight against hunger in the Quad Cities. The cereal will be delivered to different food pantries and charities throughout the year. Social Ministry The children will participate in different projects this year that aid those who are less fortunate. It is through helping others who have been marginalized that we realize our own blessings. All children with cumulative attendance of 80% or better have hit the mark and will be listed monthly in the Agape News. ORTHODOX BIBLE STUDY The Orthodox Bible Study will meet on Monday Evenings from 6:00pm- 7:30pm and on Thursday Mornings from 9:30am-11:00am to study the Book of Acts. We will also study the lives of the Apostles. Bible Study is an opportunity for us to apply the Scriptures to our everyday lives. The Bible is the Good News that enriches our faith and deepens our understanding of every issue that we face. This can only be done through obtaining the mind of the Holy Fathers. Let the scripture come alive in your life today!!!

SAINT JAMES, BROTHER OF THE LORD Celebrated October 23 According to some, this Saint was a son of Joseph the Betrothed, born of the wife that the latter had before he was betrothed to the Ever-virgin. Hence he was the brother of the Lord, Who was also thought to be the son of Joseph (Matt. 13: 55). But some say that he was a nephew of Joseph, and the son of his brother Cleopas, who was also called Alphaeus and Mary his wife, who was the first cousin of the Theotokos. But even according to this genealogy, he was still called, according to the idiom of the Scriptures, the Lord's brother because of their kinship. This James is called the Less (Mark 15:4) by the Evangelists to distinguish him from James, the son of Zebedee, who was called the Great. He became the first Bishop of Jerusalem, elevated to this Episcopal rank by the Apostles, according to Eusebius (Eccl. Hist., Book II: 23), and was called Obliah, that is, the Just, because of his great holiness and righteousness. Having ascended the crest of the Temple on the day of the Passover at the prompting of all, he bore testimony from there concerning his belief in Jesus, and he proclaimed with a great voice that Jesus sits at the right hand of the great power of God and shall come again upon the clouds of heaven. On hearing this testimony, many of those present cried, "Hosanna to the Son of David." But the Scribes and Pharisees cried, "So, even the just one hath been led astray," and at the command of Ananias the high priest, the Apostle was cast down headlong from thence, then was stoned, and while he prayed for his slayers, his head was crushed by the wooden club wielded by a certain scribe. The first of the Catholic (General) Epistles written to the Jews in the Diaspora who believed in Christ was written by this James.

SAINT DEMETRIOS THE MYRRHBEARER Celebrated October 26 S a i n t D e m e t r i o s w a s a Thessalonian, a most pious son of pious and noble parents, and a teacher of the Faith of Christ. When Maximian first came to Thessalonica in 290, he raised the Saint to the rank of Duke of Thessaly. But when it was discovered that the Saint was a Christian, he was arrested and kept bound in a bath-house. While the games were under way in the city, Maximian was a spectator there. A certain friend of his, a barbarian who was a notable wrestler, Lyaeus by name, waxing haughty because of the height and strength of his body, boasted in the stadium and challenged the citizens to a contest with him. All that fought with him were defeated. Seeing this, a certain youth named Nestor, acquaintance of Demetriοs', came to the Saint in the bath-house and asked his blessing to fight Lyaeus single-handed. Receiving this blessing and sealing himself with the sign of the precious Cross, he presented himself in the stadium, and said, "O God of Demetriοs, help me!" and straightway he engaged Lyaeus in combat and smote him with a mortal blow to the heart, leaving the former boaster lifeless upon the earth. Maximian was sorely grieved over this, and when he learned who was the cause of this defeat, he commanded straightway and Demetriοs was pierced with lances while he was yet in the bath-house, As for Nestor, Maximian commanded that he be slain with his own sword.

PARAKLESIS The Small Paraklesis to the Theotokos is a service in which we offer our prayers to the Blessed Mother of God in which we ask her to pray on our behalf to the Lord. Our supplications are for health, guidance and deliverance from adversity. It is through her prayers that we are saved, for she is closer to the Lord than you or I, and we know through many miracles that her prayers are heard. Please take a moment and prepare a list of those for whom you would like to have prayers offered - bring the list to the Paraklesis and offer your prayers with the whole community. For those who cannot come, know that the Church is open and that prayers are being offered for all of us. Again we pray for mercy, life, health, peace, safety, salvation, visitation, forgiveness and remission of sins of the servants of God

HOW OLD IS THE ORTHODOX CHURCH? By Rev. Dr. Miltiades Efthimiou If you are a Lutheran, your religion was founded by Martin Luther, an exmonk of the Catholic Church, in the year 1517. If you belong to the church of England, your religion was founded by King Henry VIII in the year 1534 because the Pope would not grant him a divorce with the right to re-marry. If you are Presbyterian, your religion was founded by John Knox in Scotland in the year 1560. If you are a Congregationalist, your religion was originated by Robert Brown in Holland in 1582. If you are a Protestant Episcopalian, your religion was an offshoot of the Church of England, founded by Samuel Senbury in the American Colonies in the 17th century. If you are Baptist, you owe the tenets of your religion to John Smyth, who launched it in Amsterdam in 1606. If you are of the Dutch Reform Church, you recognize Michelis Jones as founder because he originated your religion in New York in 1628. If you are Methodist, your religion was founded by John and Charles Wesley in England in 1774. If you are Mormon (Latter Day Saints), Joseph Smith started your religion in Palmyra, New York in 1829. If you worship with the Salvation Army, your sect began with William Booth in London in 1865. If you are Christian Scientist, you look to 1879 as the year which your religion was born and to Mary Baker Eddy as the founder. If you belong to one of the religious organizations known as Church of the Nazarene, Pentecostal Gospel, Holiness Church or Jehovah s Witnesses, your religion is one of hundreds of new sects founded by men within the past hundred years. If you are Roman Catholic, your church shared the same rich apostolic and doctrinal heritage as the Orthodox Church for the first thousand years of its history since during the first millennium they were one and the same Church. Lamentably, in 1054, the Pope of Rome broke away from the other four Apostolic Patriarchates (which included Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch and Jerusalem), by tampering with the Original Creed of the Church, and considering himself to be infallible. Thus your church is 1,000 years old. If you are Orthodox Christian, your religion was founded in the year 33 by Jesus Christ the Son of God. It has not changed since that time. Our church is now almost 2,000 years old. And it is for this reason, that Orthodoxy, the Church of the Apostles and the Fathers is considered the true one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. This is the greatest legacy that we can pass on to the young people of the new millennium!
