wip3
There are two new sections in this issue: The section 7 Israeli Photographers and the section Texts. In the first section Yanniv Waissa, who participated in wip2, suggested compiling a section of Israeli photographers. He selected seven photographers and he sent their work to me. I then did the final selection and presentation of the photographs. This work was done in November and December and is not meant to be a statement about, or to relate to, recent events in the Middle East. In the second section, two texts are featured. They are not explanatory texts of a photo project - they are texts on photography. The writers are using small photos to illustrate their text but the text is the protagonist. I hope to have more text submissions in the future. Some statistics: wip1 came out in July 2008 as an e-mail attachment. Wip2 was uploaded in September at www.wip.gr. Until December, 3.800 unique users from 99 countries have visited the website, with an average of 35 viewers per day. Work by 71 photographers from 12 countries (Greece, Germany, France, Spain, Russia, England, Italy, Belgium, Israel, China, U.S.A., Canada) has been presented in the first 3 issues. Next issue will be curated by photographer and curator Kostis Antoniadis. Have a good year.

Indigo Night (The Hotel) Seven keys in hand for seven different doors; three staircases and two long corridors where it s always late: we shall name this place the Hotel. Over there, the tenants shouts and whispers are absorbed in a felted silence. Wallpapers see everything. Nostrils get used to the Hotel s particular atmosphere, but strange events occur ceaselessly under the tired customers noses. The Hotel lives its own life in the empty rooms. In such places, a common vacuum cleaner recreates the misleading sound of storm in an open sea, capable of freezing the blood of any sleepwalker. Travelers arrive at night with a suitcase full of light as sole luggage. In room 43, I myself, was able to cut a wooden ladder with a kitchen knife; in room 23 it s not necessary to knock, there s no one inside but the victim; and in room 16 there is another exit - but this should remain secret. My night at the Hotel left me with memories I still don t dare to narrate, out of fear of being misunderstood. My photos reproduce some of these visions. But those of you who smile in secret while reading those lines, should experience the same. A single night at the Hotel is enough.

White Swan White Swan White Swan is a prison in the middle of Russia, in the town of Solikamsk. It is situated in the Perm region of Russia. Solikamsk means salt on a river Kama. Some centuries ago there was a big salt industry. For many many years it was a town of prisons. There were a lot of prisons in soviet times. The record number of the prisoners of that time were about 30.000 people. Now the population of this town is about 100.000 people. And the atmosphere in this town is very special, cause it is like a town of prisons. And the population is the children of the prisoners and the children of children of prisoners. White Swan is a very special one for all this reasons. My friend called me and asked, if I want to go to the prison with a documentary film to take photos there. I agreed at once. It is a prison for the most cruel criminals, who will stay there for their whole life. Terrorists, serial killers, rapers... each of them killed at least 1 person. Some of them killed more then a 100. Young and old, different nationalities, several hundreds of men, who took others lives. But the most important thing I learnt is, that even after all that happened in their life they are still men. Not like a Man with a big letter, but man with all his fears and problems. They are still ordinary people, not mosters. Serezha Komarov Serezha Komarov
This man was robbing a flat with another man. And in this very moment, a girl, who was living in this flat came home. They decided to kill her. She asked them not to shoot her. So they hang her.
Η ζωή είναι Θεός, ο θάνατος είναι απόκτηση Life - is God, Death - is acquisition «Ο Θεός να σ ευλογεί» God bless you Βιασμός και φόνος 2 ανθρώπων Rape and murder of 2 people «Το χειρότερο δεν είναι ότι διαλύθηκε η ζωή μου, το χειρότερο είναι ότι διαλύθηκαν οι ζωές των άλλων» The worst is not that my life is broken, the worst is that lifes of others are broken 4 φόνοι με κίνητρο το κέρδος 4 kills for profit

7 israeli photographers compiled by Yaniv Waissa
The first photograph taken in Palestine was of the Western Wall in 1844. The destinations for pilgrims such as Jerusalem, Tiberias, Bethlehem and Nazareth, attracted a lot of photographers with their oriental and romantic charm. Ouria Tadmor The first Jewish photographers immigrated to Palestine after 1882 and used their photographs to spread the Zionist idea and to raise donations. Their images were inspired by religious motifs. With the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, photography had an important mission in documenting the evolution of the new-born country. The breakthrough of photography in the public and the recognition of photography as a tool of artistic expression occurred in the late 1950 s, following the exhibitions The Dying Nature by Peter Merom and The Family of Man, curated by Edward Steichen. Η αναγνώριση της φωτογραφίας ως μέσο καλλιτεχνικής έκφρασης έγινε στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του 50, μετά τις εκθέσεις The Dying Nature του Peter Merom και The Family of Man, που επιμελήθηκε ο Edward Steichen.
Yaakov Israel has been documenting, for years, public housing (and its residents) in different neighborhoods in Jerusalem, where he grew up, and where he still resides. Public housing is a form of housing that occurs prominently in the Israeli urban landscape from the late 1950 s till the mid 1970 s, in order to provide housing for the masses during the years of large scale immigration. Hamutal Davidi displays monumental building structures growing out of the ground, suppressing nature, but at the same time they contain a sort of a new poetics, sending long proud fingers into the clear blue skies. Empty from human presence, Davidi s photographs are featured with a stable symmetry, with a cool and distant beauty. Tomer Appelbaum is a press photographer whose work is generally conceived along with his journalistic work. Most of his works deal with current events, conflict-ridden realities, the club culture, and social as well as religious rituals. Ouria Tadmor creates with his street photography short stories about life. His works deals with the relationships between strangers in the street; relationships that last for a very short time and are usually saturated with loneliness and sexual tension. Tziki Eizenberg deals with the relationship between nature, culture, and death. The photographed subjects are taken from the margins of our life: a hedge in the process of dying, the remains of a bonfire Ο Yaakov Israel Zuzana Janku observed the Palestinian city of Ramallah as an outside wanderer, seeking to capture its disappearing greenery and quiet corners, as well as its proud new constructions, especially in areas where the two worlds overlap. Regular visits to the West Bank village of Kobar and the subsequent documentation of its homes gave rise to questions about roots, cultural and historic alienation from one s environment, and various forms of re-possession. Yaniv Waissa goes on a journey towards a personal and a collective experience and activates a new system of morbid, apocalyptic and holocaust inspired associations.

Βarcelona2, papelito We are that little piece of paper in the middle of the street Has anyone never been there? This is the name of the game. These are the rules of an omnipresent post modern condition that will allow only so much leeway. Torn pieces of paper that strangely enough emit a peculiar glow in the darkness only when they happen to lie on clear ground. Only then can we make out the outline of a flower, or understand the original reason that spurted them into existence. They simply lie in front of us, unkempt, not at all pretentious. In truth, somewhat forlorn, these paper snippets often carry stories that need only a hint of attention to bud with admirable colour and detail. They constitute unique stories of ordinary life placed side by side with our official, documented history. Without them we would be lost. They are deserving guides in the unforgiving route of daily survival. Adding colour and breath as they are moulded and transformed; they take shape in our pocket as they adapt to conditions. They keep us company. They serve us. This is also the case with loose photographs. Equally forlorn like little pieces of paper blown about in the middle of the street. Without purpose or defining reason, scattered pieces of paper on the path of life; they lie forgotten in drawers, hidden between the pages of books, under things in cupboards; lost files stored on the hard disc and in unnamed cds. Lost and almost forgotten, they suddenly surface at the most awkward times. Photographs that we had judged unsuitable to include in a presentation or which we neglected because of a sudden turn in our life. Nevertheless, here they stand, demanding now to be treated fairly, for all the precious memories they have preserved in a tangled ball. Is it worthy the time and attention to unravel... In fact, it is precisely those odd pieces that deserve our gratitude for giving us grounds to reconsider our certainties about what did matter in life and what not.
