NEWSPAPER EVALUATION SHEET Country: GREECE Newspaper: Eleftheros Typos, Daily and Sunday edition Introduction The newspaper Eleftheros Typos, is a daily national newspaper known for its liberal conservative political orientation. It was selected for the pilot study mainly because of its affiliation to the main right wing party in Greece, New Democracy. The methodology for assessing Eleftheros Typos is based on four Indicators, built in the framework of MEDIVA project (see MEDIVA Diversity Indicators, a Tool Kit), which aimed at monitoring and evaluating the newspaper s capacity to reflect migration related diversity and promote migrant integration. The evaluation of indicators 2-4 and the calculation of relevant scores attributed to them were based on the responses given by the editor-inchief of general reportage s department of Eleftheros Typos, during a person to person interview conducted in February 2012. The calculation of the score for each indicator was organized along the following procedure: we tick answers on the sub-questions and hence give score on the specific questions. Then, we calculated the total score for each indicator which is the average of the sub-indicators score.
INDICATOR 2 Media news making/programme production Total Score: Medium (2.3) 2.1 Existence of specialized sections/programmes on news from migrants countries of origin (never) EXPLANATION of scoring: News from the migrants countries of origin are part of the world news. Οι ειδήσεις που αφορούν τις χώρες καταγωγής των μεταναστών αποτελούν μέρος της διεθνής ειδησιογραφίας και συνεπώς εντάσσονται στο τμήμα διεθνών ειδήσεων. 2.2 If there are such programmes in newspaper, are they at one of the most visible pages of the newspaper EXPLANATION of scoring: no 2.3 Existence of programmes in the languages of the main migrant groups of the country EXPLANATION of scoring: The existence of such programme is not seen as necessary by the respondent, as far as the main readership audience of Eleftheros Typos is Greek. At the same time, in her view, long-term migrants living in Greece are well - integrated and therefore they are treated as Greeks by the newspaper [This is why there are no special programmes for them]. Η ύπαρξη ενός τέτοιου προγράμματος δεν κρίνεται απαραίτητη από τη στιγμή που το βασικό αναγνωστικό κοινό της εφημερίδας είναι Έλληνες. Επιπλέον, οι μετανάστες, που διαμένουν για πολλά χρόνια στην Ελλάδα, σύμφωνα με την εφημερίδα, θεωρούνται ενσωματωμένοι και κατ επέκταση αντιμετωπίζονται ισότιμα με τους Έλληνες. 2.4 Existence of specialized journalists on migrants and diversity issues High: 5 (yes) EXPLANATION of scoring: The respondents confirm the existence of specialized journalist on migration related issues. But, it was admitted, that these journalists have generally been trained on the job rather than receiving any formal guidance or training. Their role is referred to be of the utmost significance when it comes to the communication channels set up with migrant associations and need for their feedback on fact-checking. Στην εφημερίδα υπάρχουν εξειδικευμένοι συντάκτες από το ελεύθερο ρεπορτάζ, οι οποίοι, σύμφωνα με την ερωτώμενη, κατέχουν αρκετά καλά αλλά σε εμπειρικό επίπεδο, το αντικείμενο της μετανάστευσης. Επιπλέον, έχουν καλές πηγές στο μεταναστευτικό χώρο, διατηρούν επαφές με οργανωμένους συλλόγους μεταναστών και έρχονται σε επαφή μαζί τους όποτε χρειαστεί. Αρκετές φορές, όπως παρατηρεί η ερωτώμενη, είναι οι ίδιοι οι μετανάστες ή οι οργανωμένοι σύλλογοί τους που προσεγγίσουν τους συντάκτες ούτως ώστε να καταγγείλουν ρατσιστικά, συνήθως, περιστατικά ή άλλα συναφή μεταναστευτικά θέματα.. 2
2.5 Filtering of migrant-related news 2.5.1 Sources for the news and verifying information (fact-checking) High: 5 EXPLANATION of scoring: The primary news source for Eleftheros Typos, as the respondent put it, are migrants themselves. Moreover, it is believed that the consultation of several sources and the emphasis put on fact-checking guarantee the impartiality of the coverage as regards the ethnic origin of the people involved. They do not consider institutions or state sources as more trustworthy in the migration field than other sources and always double check the information that they receive. Η βασική πηγή για την εφημερίδα, όπως δηλώνει η αρχισυντάκτρια του ελεύθερου ρεπορτάζ, είναι οι ίδιοι οι μετανάστες. Αρκετές φορές είναι και οι οργανωμένοι πολίτες οι οποίοι μπορεί να ανήκουν σε αριστερά κόμματα, ή κάποια ΜΚΟ, ακόμα και αυτόνομοι πολίτες κάποιας γειτονιάς οι οποίοι έχουν συγκροτηθεί για να προστατεύσουν ή φέρουν πιο κοντά τους μετανάστες στην τοπική κοινωνία. Πάντως, η βασική αρχή που η εφημερίδα ακολουθεί, όπως χαρακτηριστικά αναφέρεται, είναι η χρήση τουλάχιστον 2-3 πηγών για τη διασταύρωση των ειδήσεων και εν γένει της πληροφορίας. Ορισμένες φορές, σημειώνει η ερωτώμενη, έχουν φθάσει ειδήσεις ή πληροφορίες στην εφημερίδα, τις οποίες παρά τη σοβαρότητα και την εγκυρότητα της πηγής (ακόμα και από επίσημες πηγές) το ρεπορτάζ δεν τις επιβεβαίωσε ή σε κάθε περίπτωση δεν κρίθηκαν άξια προς κάλυψη. 2.5.2 Who chooses what are the migration related news to be published Medium: 3 EXPLANATION of scoring: As the respondent explains, the publication of any migration related news comes out as a joint decision of both journalist/editor-in-chief and the newsroom director. Βασικά, την είδηση ή το θέμα το φέρνει ο ίδιος ο δημοσιογράφος, ο οποίος από κοινού με την αρχισυντάκτρια αποφασίζουν εάν το θέμα χρίζει κάλυψης. Στη συνέχεια παρουσιάζεται στη ημερήσια σύσκεψη με τη διεύθυνση της εφημερίδας όπου εκεί δίνετε η τελική έγκριση ή απορρίπτεται. Φυσικά, η συγκεκριμένη διαδικασία ισχύει για όλα τα θέματα συμπεριλαμβανομένου και των ειδήσεων από το μεταναστευτικό χώρο. 2.5.3 Does the newspaper have an open comments section (reacting to published articles). If they have it, do they edit it for racist language? High: 5 (yes) EXPLANATION of scoring: The newspaper has a special page for the publication of readers letters. There is also the relevant website and call center where anyone can comments or leave messages. However, as the respondent argues, no racist or discriminatory comment is allowed to be published at all. 3
Η εφημερίδα δεν διαθέτει πλέον ειδική σελίδα για τη δημοσίευση γραμμάτων αναγνωστών. Ωστόσο, κάποιες επιστολές που ξεχωρίζουν δημοσιεύονται. Υπάρχει, επίσης και η σχετική ιστοσελίδα ή το τηλεφωνικό κέντρο όπου μπορεί κάποιος να αφήσει τα σχόλιά. Πάντως, όπως κατηγορηματικά δηλώνει η ερωτώμενη, δεν υπάρχει περίπτωση ρατσιστικό σχόλιο οποιασδήποτε μορφής να δημοσιευθεί. 2.5.4 Adoption of ethical reporting guidelines with regard to vulnerable groups and specifically with regard to immigrants and minorities (informal reporting guidelines but no clear company commitment to them) EXPLANATION of scoring: The informant admitted that no ethical reporting guidelines with regard to vulnerable social groups are adopted by the newspaper. However, as she argues, the overall ethical code of journalism is properly applied. Στην περίπτωση του Ελεύθερου Τύπου ισχύουν οι γενικότερες αρχές που διέπουν το δημοσιογραφικό επάγγελμα. Και φυσικά η πρώτη αρχή, σύμφωνα με την ερωτώμενη, είναι η διασταύρωση της είδησης. 4
INDICATOR 3: MEDIA RECRUITMENT AND EMPLOYMENT PRACTICES Total Score: Low (1) 3.1 Application of measures that are aimed at ensuring that the company s staff reflects the ethnic composition of the migrant population Low: 3 EXPLANATION of scoring: The respondent argues that although the newspaper has no such practice whatsoever, it is believed that there is no need to adopt them since newspaper staff is not racist but rather tolerant toward immigrants. Her argument is reinforced by the fact that a significant number of newspaper technical staff are of migrant background. Σύμφωνα με την αρχισυντάκτρια, η εφημερίδα δεν εφαρμόζει κάποια συγκεκριμένη πολιτική αναφορικά με την πρόσληψη μεταναστών. Ωστόσο, όπως ανέφερε, στο γενικότερο προσωπικό του Ελεύθερου Τύπου υπάρχουν και μετανάστες εργαζόμενοι. Πάντως, όπως η ίδια παραδέχτηκε, η δουλειά τους δεν σχετίζεται με το επάγγελμα του δημοσιογράφου. 3.2 Discrimination in the recruitment of third country nationals as media professionals Existence of anti-discrimination measures aimed at preventing discrimination in the recruitment practices of the specific media (neither awareness nor implementation) EXPLANATION of scoring: Indeed, such measures do not exist at the newspaper. However, as the respondent put it, despite the newspaper s right-wing political orientation, the Eleftheros Typos staffs is not racist but rather tolerant towards migrants. INDICATOR 4 - MEDIA TRAINING PRACTICES Total Score: Low (1) 4.1 Existence of training opportunities tailored to the needs of migrant media professionals Low: 3 EXPLANATION of scoring: There is no provision for diversity training for the newspaper staff and none among them has received such training so far. In the meantime, however, the respondent refers to the participation of specialized journalists to different information meeting on migrants related issues taking place at the European parliament in Brussels. INDICATOR 1 MEDIA CONTENT The evaluation of indicator 1 is qualitative in nature and based on data processing that was obtained by the monitoring of the daily and Sunday editions of Eleftheros Typos newspaper during the sampling period. The period of sampling was organised around three periods. The selected dates for each period are: 1 st Period: 23-29 November 2011 2 nd Period: 25 31 January 2012 3 rd Period: 7-28 February 2012 The assessment of the media content of Elftheros Typos used as unit of analysis the individual articles/reports/news items on full newspaper. Then, we count the total number of items of newspaper for the period coded and find out how many of those items are related to migration or refer to migrants (for more details see the table below). Finally, the total mean score of the indicator 1 is based on the average of the subindicators score 1.1-1.4.
