Under the leadership of our president, Mrs. Helen Salatas, many activities are being planned as in past years. 20 th ANNUAL ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM ORATORICAL FESTIVAL It is time to begin preparation for the Oratorical Festival in our Parish, which is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, March 1, 2009 after Divine Liturgy. Sunday School will be from 10:00 a.m.-11:05 a.m. At 11:10 a.m.-the end of Liturgy, all students are to report to the church. The Oratorical Festival offers our youth the unique opportunity to express their faith, to research Orthodoxy in a meaningful way, and to reinforce and exhort each other to remain faithful to Jesus Christ and His Church. For these reasons, all of our young people will prepare speeches, poems, essays or iconography this year, whether or not they ultimately choose to participate. In this way, we further one of the primary missions of the Festival, which is to help our children learn more about their faith. Therefore, we ask you as parents, to please support the efforts of the church and your child by encouraging them to participate in this year s St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival. Enthusiasm is contagious!! Please do your part to spread it throughout our parish and especially to our young people. We thank you for your cooperation, and doing your part to make this program a huge success. The Oratorical Festival is open for grades 1 st -12 th. Application deadline is Wednesday, February 25, 2009. Refreshments will be provided at the program.

We look forward to your child s presentation at the Oratorical Festival. ELEMENTARY DIVISION Speech must be 3 minutes long. Essay any length. Poetry must be a minimum of 5 lines. Iconography can be any size. **IN ALL DIVISIONS** ALL speeches, poetries, and essays must be typed and turned in by Wednesday, February 25. Topics for JUNIOR DIVISION Grades 7-9 1. In his First Baptismal Instruction (Ch. 44) St. John Chrysostom writes, You must act and deliberate in all things with the knowledge that He is everywhere with you. Discuss how a Christian can remain aware of the Presence of God in his or her life. 2. I grieve and am pained that all people do not know Paul as much as they ought to know him, writes St. John Chrysostom in his commentary on the epistle to the Romans. Discuss aspects of the life and ministry of St. Paul that show the importance and the need for the people of today to know St. Paul. 3. The ancient Greek word, agon or agonas was used to describe athletic activities. It was also employed by early Christians to describe the way a Christian should live. How does the effort to live a Christian life resemble an athletic activity? 4. St. John of Damascus wrote, What the book does for those who understand letters, the image does for the illiterate (Treatise 1, Against the iconoclasts). What is the proper relationship between the images one sees that the lifestyle one leads? 5. In November 1948, Archbishop Athenagoras of America was elected Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople and enthroned in January 1949. Who was Patriarch Athenagoras of Constantinople and what is his legacy to the Orthodox Church and Christianity? Topics for the SENIOR DIVISION (Grades 10-12) 1. All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction and for training in righteousness: (2 Timothy 3:16). Discuss how reading the Bible regularly can benefit a Christian today. 2. Do you know that you are God s temple and that God s Spirit dwells in you? If any one destroys God s temple, God will destroy him. For God s temple is holy and that temple you are: (1 Corinthians 3:16). How do you translate these words of St. Paul into a lifestyle in view of society s obsession with totally different lifestyles? 3. Jesus said, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God (Matthew 19:24). What is the appropriate attitude of a Christian towards money and wealth? 4. Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, in his recent book Encountering the Mystery, writes, [t]he freedom of God determines and defines the freedom of humanity (p.16). In what sense does the freedom of God determine and define the freedom of humanity, and what are the practical consequences of this connection? 5. I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in His word I put my hope (Psalm 130:5, LXX). In light of the entire text of Psalm 130, what is hope and for what do Christians hope? CONTENT FOR JR.
