Message from Father George SAINT PAUL WAS TRANSFIGURED THROUGH THE CRUCIFIXION I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. (Galatians 2:20 - RSV) This morning s Epistle lesson from Saint Paul addresses a crucifixion of our sinful passions and desires. What he is teaching here is that through prayer and confession we recognize the sins in our lives and the passions that have been corrupted by the sinful world. By saying I have been crucified with Christ, Saint Paul does not mean that he has physically shared the same sentence on the Cross. It means that because of the example of Christ dying on the Cross for the sins of humanity, he has recognized the sins in his life that were contrary to the teachings of our Lord Jesus. When baptized in the Orthodox Church and emerging from the baptismal font water, we are symbolically a new creature in Christ. As we are Chrismated or Confirmed we have been given the Gift of the Seal of the Holy Spirit. At our Baptism we have been blessed by God, blessed to be a new creature in Christ. As we become aware of this awesome gift, we recognize as did Saint Paul that Christ lives in me. For some this is described as the born again experience. It means that even though most of us have been an Orthodox Christian since infancy there comes a time when each of us must recognize this incredible gift that we received and allow it to guide our lives, words, deeds, and thoughts. As a Christian our prayers should include an earnest attempt of recognizing that Christ is in us and determine what God wants us to do for Him with this great gift. We must ascertain what God s Will is and how we must follow that Will of God. As Saint Paul concludes this thought: the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me, he understands what a sacrifice our Lord Jesus made for us on the Cross through His crucifixion. As a follower of Christ, the sacrifice we make is turning away from our sinful desires and passions and walk in Faith, doing those things that God expects of us. Change is not easy, as Saint Paul is well aware. But for the Christian, it is necessary to give up the old nature of our sinful self and our old ways and live a new life in Christ. + + + + + + + + ANNOUNCEMENT: Altar Boy Meeting Serving the Lord with gladness! THE EPISTLE Galatians 2:16-20 O Lord, how manifold are your works. You have made all things in wisdom. Bless the Lord, O my soul. BRETHREN, you know that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. THE GOSPEL Mark 8:34-38; 9:1 The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power."
