Γ:3) A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRIEST In This Issue Priest s Message Stewardship 100th Anniversary Gala Philoptochos News GOYA News PTO News Greek School News Sunday School News Our Faith Announcements Have a Great New Ecclesiastical Year IS CHURCH IN THE SCHEDULE? Fathers and Mothers go and lead your children by the hand into the church - St. John Chrysostom We are all busy with school, work, extra curricular activities and social events which fill our over worked and overloaded weekly schedules. Even if done in haste, these activities are attended because they have been deemed important. They are a priority either because they benefit our careers, social lives or our overall happiness. As each family has their particular routine or schedule, we must reflect if the church has also been deemed important. Have we considered how critical the Church is for our spiritual well being? Do we realize how our schedules impact the spiritual development of our children? With the consistency of these weekly routines children are conditioned with the understanding that these events are important and a priority for the family. They are part of the schedule and therefore not negotiable. If our children missed half of their soccer practices and did not complete their schoolwork, our children would know that soccer and school are not important. Similarly, if praying as a family, reading the Bible and attending services are not done consistently, our children will be conditioned with the understanding that there is no benefit in living a life as a faithful Orthodox Christian. These faith-based activities should be deemed as the highest priority but are commonly the first negotiable activity on most family schedules. The reality is our chaotic weekly routines are desperate for tranquility, reflection and prayer. We go to such efforts to complete assignments and attend social gatherings, but do we make the same effort to nourish our soul through prayer and consistently going to church? So much of our week is dedicated to our lives but how much of our lives is dedicated to God? The bottom line is: we don t go to church for what we get out of it. We go to church to be a part of a community. And when we decide not to go, it s not just us that suffers the whole community suffers. My brothers and sisters, as we begin the New Ecclesiastical year of 2016, let us as a family and community in Christ yearn for our children and grandchildren to continue to realize the importance of our precious faith in Jesus Christ. Praying in the home, reading the Bible and attending services as a family must not be negotiable. Our precious Orthodox Faith must be permanently in the schedule of our daily lives. Wherever you are, I hope you will take some time to think about making a little bit more effort in being a more integral part of our community. You will be welcomed with open arms. That s the reason I love our church because we have done everything we can up to this point to be a place where people can come and find connection. Rev. Fr. Nicholas Pastrikos

Father Nicholas would like to welcome back all of the St. George Altar Boys for another fruitful and very important year. I hope that everyone has had plenty of time over the summer to rest and rejuvenate. Now it is time to re-energize ourselves in Christ. Father Nicholas is again extending an invitation to all our young boys in the parish who are about to or have reached the age of 10, to come and serve God by serving in the altar as an Altar Boy. There is a saying, "once you've tried it, you would like it". This is very true, just ask any current altar boy who has experienced the feeling of serving God in the Altar. The memories will always be remembered and cherished. ALTAR BOY MEETING SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1st AT 10:30 a.m. PLEASE COME AND JOIN!!! OUR LORD NEEDS YOU!!! September/October 2016 Page 5 ΜΗΝΥΜΑ ΤΟΥ ΠΡΟΕΔΡΟΥ - PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Dear Parishioners, I would like to wish everyone a great New Ecclesiastical Year! It s that time of the year now where summer is coming to an end, and we are all making preparations for the new season upon us. Our 100th year anniversary celebrations are in the works with the Highland Park celebration and the Gala on October 22nd. I hope that all of our community can participate in these wonderful events. With the start of the new Ecclesiastical year we have good news: As you may have seen, the new construction parking lot/retaining wall project is well underway. I need for all of us to partake in these new developments in Saint George. Expected completion will be by the end of this year, so it will be a nice development for the betterment for our community. It would be my pleasure to see the whole community involved in the new era. With the 100th anniversary of our beloved community, everyone s participation is necessary and I hope you can make St. George even bigger and greater! Welcome back and I hope we have a great new season! George Zalokostas President, Board of Trustees WE ASK THAT EVERYONE ATTENDS THIS VERY IMPORTANT MEETING. MANY IMPORTANT ISSUES WILL BE DISCUSSED CONCERNING THE PROGRESS OF OUR COMMUNITY. IN ADDITION, NOMINATIONS FOR THE NEW PARISH COUNCIL WILL BE TAKEN. The Rutgers football season will begin shortly and the first game of the season will be on Saturday, September 10th, 2016, and again we will be parking cars in our lot. We need everyone to volunteer to help us park cars. Even if you come and help for an hour, this will help our mission and Church very much. Please call the Church Office at 732-463-1642 to register.

Page 6 September/October 2016 I wish to take this opportunity and provide the St. George community an update on the progress and programs the 100 th Anniversary Committee has secured during the second quarter of this year. The committee continues to meet on a weekly basis organizing the events, which will be highlighted with our Anniversary Celebration Week, from October 15-22, 2016. In April the community participated in the NYC Greek Independence Day Parade, with a successful turnout. We had a redesigned float commemorating our 100 th Anniversary, including entertainment and our very own St. George riding the horse during our march on 5 th Avenue. In May we celebrated Easter, the feast day of St. George and our annual Greek Festival. We were graced by his Eminence, Metropolitan Evangelos during the feast day of St. George, we witnessed President Obama s motorcade and our parishioners posing for a 100 th Anniversary picture during the festival. In June we had Greek and Sunday school graduations, followed by celebrations commemorating our high school graduates. We also hosted a Sunday-Photo Day, taking photographs of the various organizations and societies. As we move into the summer months, I wish to provide a few important updates pertaining to the Anniversary Celebration Week in October: The deadline for the 100 th Anniversary Commemorative Album has been extended to September 16. We have made arrangements with the printer to allow for additional ads. Please provide the ads As Soon As Possible. Ads received on September 16, will be returned, no exceptions. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of a historic commemorative album, which will be seen by future generations. We are requesting photographs from the church organizations and societies to be incorporated into the documentary. We need a few photographs from events over the past 25 years.

Page 14 September/October 2016 STEWARDSHIP Beloved in the Lord, At this point I have no humorous anecdotes for you in this Stewardship appeal letter; no cute or inspiring stories - just the simple message of the everlasting gospel: God so loved the world that He gave His only-begotten Son, so that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Down through the centuries, people have taken this simple message of divine grace and turned it into all sorts of systems and laws. We have institutionalized the church and sometimes transformed it beyond recognition form those early groups of believers who gathered together sharing all their goods and money so that they might share life together and be a blessing to their community and world around them. We, as a Church today, do not share everything like the early Christians did, and there is perhaps no need for us to do so. Nevertheless, we as a community do own and maintain a building which serves our spiritual and community needs, and the community supports a priest, a secretary and a custodian full time, and Greek School Director and teachers on a part-time basis, which allocates funds for the various needs and expenses of our Church community all year round. In order to provide for this building, salaries and other expenses, our Church and community needs to derive income. Our primary source of income is from the good-will offerings of our members. If you are currently a Stewardship member, I thank you personally for your continued support of our St. George, and may our Lord bless you and yours with prosperity and many spiritual blessings and ask you personally to never cease supporting our Church and community. If you are not a Stewardship member of St. George, I invite you to consider joining our spiritual family. If you and or your family have benefited from the worship services or the teachings, or our Sunday School program and Greek school program, from our varied organizations, for young and old, if you enjoy the fellowships that you find on Sunday mornings and other special occasions, please consider how much you or your family would be missing if our church and its facilities, its priest, its secretary, its custodian, choir, GOYA, Philoptochos and other services were not here. As you consider becoming a Steward of St. George, please remember that our annual Stewardship campaign is responsible for about 40% of our total income. I ask you fervently to please respond with your love to this appeal. Thanking you in advance for your gift of generosity, Rev. Fr.

September/October 2016 Page 17 OUR FAITH Η ΘΡΗΣΚΕΙΑ ΜΑΣ Exaltation of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross September 14 Every September 14, Orthodoxy celebrates two events concerning the cross on which Christ was crucified: The Finding of the Cross in 325 AD by St. Helen, the mother of the Emperor Constantine, and the recapture of the Cross in 628 AD from the Persians who had stolen it. This celebration is named The Elevation of the Holy Cross due to the fact that after its recovery and return to Jerusalem, the Cross had to be lifted high by Patriarch Makarios, so that the throngs of people might see it and worship it. A special service is performed by the priest on this feast day; the Cross of Blessing is placed in a tray filled with flowers and basil and three candles. The flowers remind us of the beauty of our Lord and the grace of the Cross and the tradition tells that basil was growing on the ground which covered the buried Cross. The tree candles symbolize the Divine Light of the Holy Trinity. Hymns and petitions for the grace and health are offered by the priest who imitates the first elevation of the cross by slowly descending movements. At the conclusion, the blessed flowers along with the basil are distributed to the faithful. SCARS There was once a little boy who had a bad temper. His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that, every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence. The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence. Finally, the day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper. The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father then took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won t matter how many times you say I m sorry, the wound is still there.
